along Route 138 at Ste-Martine on Wednesday Mar.19.Police said the section of the highway where the accident occurred had a narrow shoulder and poor visibility due to high snowbanks along the roadside.The driver of the car involved, a 69-year-old woman, was treated for shock following the accident.Police said the fatality is being treated as an accidental death and no charges are provincial election date now officially set for April 14, voters once again face changes to the configuration of the local constituency, which has lost the urban Beauharnois area and gained nearly 5,000 mostly rural voters from part of the former St-Jean riding on its eastern borders.In all, 40,401 voters will be eligible to cast ballots in what is once again known simply as Huntingdon riding, after spending 13 years under the name of Beauharnois-Huntingdon.Huntingdon riding has undergone half-a-dozen changes since it was first created away back in 1792.The historic Huntingdon County retained its electoral identity for 180 years before it was first altered in 1972.At that time, the riding was enlarged to include part of Chateauguay County to the north and part of Napierville-Laprairie to the east.Eight years later, in 1980, it added a whopping 10 more voters in a viindshueld rep.Mest the candidates Part I: “rue ] i HF Cl Sain ZA A InfArming the munity The local SQ detachment, faced with limited manpower and a large territory to cover, has asked all Haut-St-Laurent municipalities to help cut down on the number of false alarms called in to police.Lt.Pierre Thibault visited the March 12 meeting of the MRC’s Council of Mayors to ask the five municipalities which have not already done so to pass by-laws setting penalties for false alarms.He said that last year, a total of 78 bogus calls originated in those five communities, a sizable proportion of the total of 539 calls, real and false, recorded during 2002.Of the five in question, Havelock was the location of 24 false alarms, while Elgin had four and Tres-St-Sacrement.three.Figures were not given for the other two, St-Chrysostome and God- manchester.but it would seem that between them.they were the origin of 47 false alarm calls.In 10 of the 78 cases.the offenses merited a ticket.Lt.Thibault said.The worst aspect of the false alarms.he stressed.is the diversion of much-needed manpower to check out the call.Top priority “If its at night.we send two police officers: in the davtime.it's two patrol cars.These alarms are given top priority.and then.90 per cent have had to drop their regular traffic or crime-pre- vention duties to answer them,” he added.In the eight municipalities which have passed by-laws on the subject.issuing three false alarms automatically means a ticket and a fine.and this seems to have had a deterrent effect.Thibault said.One mayor, Godmanchester’s Pierre Poirier.said he plans to bring up the issue with his council.“I'm quite sure that we will do something about the situation, similar to what's been done elsewhere, in order to correct the situation.” he said.(PL/JT) Lt.Pierre Thibault of the LAST — some real warm weather began on the weekend, giving us hope that the end of this difficult winter is at least in view.There was some high water during the past few days in the usual low-lying places, although the flooding has not been as bad as in previous years, so far anyway.Last week, a mechanical shovel was breaking up the ice on the Chateauguay at the level of the dam in Huntingdon, so maybe that helped! MEANWNILE — we hear that the unemployment rate in the Haut-St-Laurent MRC has undergone a pretty spectacular drop in the five years between the last two Census counts.Statistics Canada reports that the figure has decreased more than 30 per cent, from 9.4 per cent to six per cent.THE GOOD NEWS — pretty well duplicates the figures from the rest of the Montérégie, Se Teacher of the Week This edition of The Gleaner features the third in our series of five “Teachers of the Week”, Chateauguay Valley teachers nominated by their peers or their principals for an article which appeared in Schoolscapes Magazine recently.Sue Deme of Hunting- don’s St.Joseph’s School is described by principal David Brisebois as “an excellent planner (who is) also very patient”.Sue says, The little kids in grade one with their big smiling faces just steal your heart”.As well as teaching Cycle 1, she also works with the senior students on the Safety Brigade, and is involved with the Second Steps program which helps students deal with their anger in a constructive way.(Photo: courtesy Schoolscapes Magazine) which dropped form 9.3 per cent to 6.1 per cent.This is lower than the provincial average of 8.2 per cent in 2001, which is also down from the 1996 Quebec average of 11.8 per cent.EVEN BETTER — were the Beauhamois- Salaberry MRC figures, which went from 12.7 per cent to 7.1 per cent.In Vaudreuil- Soulanges, there is now only 4.8 per cent unemployment, compared to 7.3 per cent five years ago.TIME I$ SHORT — for those who want to make the most of late-season ice skating.With Minor Hockey and other leagues pretty well done for the year, the Huntingdon Regional Arena is offering pleasure skaters the chance to pay $2 to come and skate at any of the following hours between now and April 2: Today (Wednesday) 7-8:30 p.m.; Friday Mar.28, 6-7:30 p.m.; Saturday Mar.29, 7-8:30 a.m.; Sunday Mar.30, 5-7 p.m.; Tuesday Apr.1, 7-9 p.m.and Wednesday Apr.2, 7-8:30 p.m.THE ANNUAL MEETING — of Les Aventuriers de l’Archéologie dans le Haut-St- Laurent, the group which oversees the Droulers Site, is coming up Tuesday Apr.1 at 7 p.m.at the MRC Building (the former Chateau) on King St.in Huntingdon.INCIDENTALLY — the Droulers Site people provided some information used in a recent article on the internet.Check out orig- inemag.net/reportages01/reportage.2asp#ha ut , an E-zine specializing in Quebec family history, for an article (in French) on the Role of Iroquois Women in the 17th and 18th Centuries.THINGS ARE QUIET — on the election front this week.We're told by Liberal organizer Viki Irving that MNA André Chenail will meet with farmers on Thursday Apr.3 in Ormstown.He wants to hear about farmers’ concems about taxes, subsidies, the family farm and the future in farming generally.Place will be the Presbyterian Church; time is 8 p.m.For more information call Viki at 264-4380.IN CHATEAUGAY N.Y.— the Chateaugay Central School Musical Theatre group is presenting “Once upon a Mattress” at the school auditorium this Friday and Saturday, Mar.28 and 29, starting at 7 p.m.and Sunday at 2 p.m.For information about prices consult last week's ad.(We can tell you they’ll be taking Canadian money at par.and that’s a good deal.) once again, the voters’ list grew, this time to over 38,000.In 2001, the changes were introduced which have left a non-hyphenated Huntingdon riding with over 40,000 voters for the first time.The constituency now includes a total of 30 municipalities bordered by the international boundary on the south, and running from the Akwesasne Mohawk Reserve in the west to Lacolle and St-Paul-Ile-aux-Noix along the Richelieu on the east.The municipalities marking the northern boundary of the riding are (from west to east) Dundee, St-Anicet, Ste-Barbe, Godmanchester, Ormstown, Très- St-Sacrement, Ste-Martine, St-Urbain, St- Rémi, St-Michel, St-Edouard, St-Cyprien-de- Napierville, and St-Valentin.The Glosnor » March 20, 2003 » 3 A WORD — to the wise, about the rules for running community announcements in this column.If you plan to charge admission to your event, then we ask you to place a paid advertisement in the newspaper.If you do that, we will throw in a free mention of the happening in This and That.Any commercial operation is also asked to advertise.The only events we can publicize here without an ad are non-profit community events, for which no admission is charged.Thanks for your understanding;
