commercial block in the centre of Ormstown early Sunday evening, local firemen called in colleagues from four other departments and prepared for the worst.In the event, it was all over in an hour or so, as the fire was contained to a second- storey office in the 150 year-old Walsh Building, which now houses a video-rental store, a dépanneur and an upstairs flat.Hundreds of spectators gathered along Lambton St.at the corner of Bridge following the outbreak of the 6 p.m.blaze, which police say began in a defective electric paper shredder in the office of building owners Jim and Pat Centraide hoping to collect $400,000 to aid 50 community groups in region Centraide Sud-ouest has launched its 2001 fund-raising campaign, with the goal of $400,000 to help finance the work of over 50 non-profit groups in the Suroît region of Southwest Quebec.With the theme \u201cPeople who help people to help people\u201d (Des gens qui aident des gens qui aident des gens), the campaign opened in the Haut-St-Laurent area last Wednesday Sept.26, at Un Coin de Chez Nous in St-Chrysostome, after a gathering in Valleyfield the previous evening.Steve Hickey, director-general of the umbrella group, along with Centraide board chairman Mireille Boyer-Barrette and Claire Deschamps, co-ordinator of volunteer services, announced the objective, which is up from last year\u2019s amount of $350,000.Last year saw the campaign exceed that goal by a significant amount, bringing in a total of $386,000, over half of it from the public sector.\u201cThat money was distributed to some 53 groups offering a wide gamut of essential services to needy people in our area,\u201d said Mireille Boyer-Barrette.Local groups benefit In the Haut-St-Laurent, local agencies benefitting from Centraide funding include the Huntingdon-based community kitchen La Bouffe Additionnelle ($6,000); Une Affaire de Famille ($2,000), the Haut-St-Lau- rent Family Resource Centre ($3,000) ; and St-Chrysostome\u2019s Un Coin de Chez Nous drop-in centre ($7,200).\u201cThis year, the need for assistance is even greater, so we're hoping that with everyone's help, we can reach the $300,000 goal,\u201d said Claire Deschamps.The the blaze from spreading throughout the brick structure, which is attached to a day-care facility just around the corner on Bridge St.Quickly under control \u201cConsidering the way it looked when we contents, but the video store counter area and the adjoining dépanneur were damaged by water and smoke.The collection of video tapes was not damaged, but the stock in the dépanneur was lost.The upstairs living area also received some smoke damage, but the building remains structurally sound; some bricks from the top of the facade fell and the wooden window frames were completely burned out, changes to the shoreline of Lake St- François, Quebec has decided to clear the way to a clear title for nearly 50 property-owners in Dundee, St-Anicet, Ste-Barbe and St-Stanislas-de-Kostka.The problem arose from the fact that the dam, built in 1850 to facilitate navigation by maintaining the water level in the lake at 152 feet above sea level, may have caused fluctuations in the high-water line, which according to law marks the boundary between private and public land.If the level has risen, flooding some sections of lake shore, the line would have moved inland, but, Quebec now says, there is no way to establish this.After several years of discussions between the land-Owners and Quebec\u2019s Environment ministry, it was finally decided earlier this summer that the government would cede clear title to 48 lakeside proprietors for the nominal sum of $1.Notarized agreements will formalize the transactions and confirm the prop- erty-owners\u2019 rights.Franklin apple-processing firm spends $3 million on expansion Franklin's Leahy Orchards is currently undergoing $3 million worth of expansion, including more land, new construction and more equipment.This summer\u2019s work, scheduled to be finished by Christmas, marks the latest stage in a seven-year program which has seen the apple-processing firm, along with its financial partners, invest a total of $18 million in the operation, said president Michael Leahy.While no new jobs are being created, the current project is expected to improve plant efficiency and working conditions for employees.Located on Route 209, Leahy Orchards currently consists of four 2 buildings, totalling 300,000 square feet.As well as the processing a plant itself, there are two controlled-atmosphere storage warehouses and another the train ,got into his buggy .when another borse, standing near, look fright at the engine, backing its vebi- cle against Mr Cleland's and throwing bim beavily upon the ground.Mr Cleland\u2019s horse then took fright and ran away.be soon freed bimself from the wagon and dashed up thru (sic) the crowd, scattering it in all directions, toward the village.Unfortunately, Mr Finlay McFee did not bear in time to get out of bis way and was knocked into the ditch, striking bis forebead against something sharp, which made an ugly gash.He was picked up in an insensible state and was considered very seriously burt, but is at present recovering.So long as the railway station remains where it is, these 60 years ago accidents will continue.The present station is altogether unit for use, and it is to be hoped the Company will build a new one, nearer the main road, when these constantly recurring accidents will cease.SUSPECT FIRE On Friday night at balf-past 11, the Kelso cheese factory was observed to be in flames, and which (sic) got in such complete possession that it was impossible to enter, so that the building and contents were a total loss.There were 190 cheese, the September make, weighing fully 12,000 Ibs, and worth in Montreal $1,500 at least.The factory was one of the best known in the Dominion, and Kelso cheese is an established brand in Liverpool.It was started in 1873, and bad a most successful career.The value of the building and fittings was over $600.Appearances point to incendiarism.October 1, 1941 TEA FIELD FIRE lea Fields of Huntingdon County in the crept near bouses and barns.The high wind that is believed to be the tail end of a tropical hurricane that swept the coast of Texas drove the smouldering waste into da terrifying mass of flames.Damage was slight because so much of the land was covered with dense undergrowth of little value.Soldiers from the Huntingdon Training Centre prevented the fire from reaching bay stacks and farm homes.The Vous avez sûrement déjà entendu cette expression.Dans nos conversations courantes, nous attribuons trop souvent, et à tort, la mauvaise qualité de l\u2019air intérieur d\u2019une maison au fait qu\u2019elle soit trop \u201cisolée\u201d.Cette terminologie est fausse.Une maison n\u2019est jamais trop isolée, mais peut par contre être très étanche à l\u2019air et mal ventilée.Laissez moi vous imager la situation.Prenez votre plus chaude et épaisse couverture de laine et placez la sur votre tête.Vous ressentirez aussitôt beaucoup de chaleur, tout en continuant de respirer normalement.Votre couverture agit ainsi comme un bon isolant tout en laissant passer lair.Imaginez maintenant vous couvrir la tête d\u2019un sac de plastique en prenant soin de bien le serrer autour de votre cou.Que vous arriverait-il?Le sac, qui n\u2019a pourtant aucune valeur isolante, se couvrirait rapidement de buée, puis vous deviendriez étourdi a cause du manque d'oxygène.Et bien le même phénomène peut se produire dans une maison étanche à l\u2019air qui ne possède pas de système de ventilation permettant d\u2019y changer l\u2019air (échangeur d\u2019air, VRC, ventilateur d\u2019extraction, etc).- Un faible taux de renouvellement d'air peut occasionner de sérieux problèmes d\u2019excès d'humidité responsables de la buée dans les fenêtres et de prolifération de moisissures dommageables pour la maison et pour la santé des occupants.Une maison bien isolée, c\u2019est à dire avec beaucoup d'isolant dans ces murs et son grenier, n\u2019est donc pas nécessairement étanche à l'air.Ce qui nous amène à une autre question: Iriez-vous dehors par une froide journée d'hiver portant votre manteau le plus chaud, mais dont la fermeture éclaire n\u2019est pas attachée?À quoi bon avoir un manteau aussi chaud s'il n\u2019est pas bien fermé!
