our chain of small communities which, like Winnie-the-Pooh, are more or less entirely surrounded by water just now, the topic of swimming seems eminently suitable this week. One of our readers wrote this week to suggest an indoor swimming pool might be a worthwhile project to consider including in the conversion of the Huntingdon Château to a multi-faceted showplace for the Town, the MRC, the CLSC and whoever else ends up there.Wouldn't it be great if this were done?Ever since the powers-that-be decided against including an indoor pool when CVR, the province's first-ever regional high school, was built in the 1960s, the lack of a year-round swimming facility has been a sore point in the Valley. The only place to go is the Cité des WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE .- Jeunes in Valleyfield, where there are quite enough swimmers already. Now that increasing stress is being laid on exercising in the water as both therapeutic and fun for older people, it would be à real asset (and a drawing card) to the CLSC especially to have such a facility. Our outdoor community pools in Hunting- don and Ormstown do a great job with the kids every summer, but there’s not much time for adults to enjoy tranquil swimming periods and gentle exercise. We know a pool for the Château would be expensive, but wouldn't it be refreshing if, just once, some sacrifices of non essential bureaucratic decor upstairs could help provide ing of real community benekt elsewhere in the building.an FROM GLEANER ARCHIVES .120 years ago April 7, 1881 CENSUS TIME The census enumerators got lo work on Monday. When are going on, it wouldn't be possible to put a swimming pool in the basement for the use of people from Huntingdon and the surrounding communities. We are all aware of how beneficial aquatic exercise Community Legion agency helps disabled in Quebec Recent cuts in Quebec government funding for heath care have meant an increase in requests for help sent in to the Legion's RCL (Quebec) for the Disabled Inc.Hemmingford’s Branch 244 of the Royal Canadian Legion is planning to help out, donating the proceeds of a planned April 12 Pot Luck Lunch to the agency, which is sponsored by Quebec Command. One in 10 Quebecers suffers from some kind of physical disability, caused by accidents, illness or birth defects. The most severely handicapped are confined to institutions, but many others cannot find employment. The RCL (Quebec) for the Disabled loans essential items for disabled people — things like canes, crutches, wheelchairs and adaptive equipment of all kinds. It also helps handicapped people financially when they must travel from all parts of the province for rehabilitation therapy, incurring expenses for transportation, lodging and meals. As well, the Legion tries to promote greater public understanding about disabilities and acceptance of disabled people in the community.Hemmingford-area residents are asked to come out on April 12 (starting at 11 a.m.) and help support this worthy cause.(FEJT) Easter decorations A trio of youngsters from Grade 1 at Huntingdon Academy show the Easter Egg window decorations they created last week.(Photo: JT) Huntingdon Scouts/Venturers presents Bowser & Blue Satarday, May 5, spa.Lac des Pins, Rte 201 Tickets $25.each (limited) from Scouts, Venturers or Carrigan’s Garage information 264-4942 QM882M 110401 Answer to today's puzzie Page 12 THE GLEANER — APRIL 11 2001 | Military Whist | Tuesday April 24th at 8:00 p.m.I J OPO 00000000000000G00CARAEAAAARARRAARARLRAVLARBR GURU RN NAP oave, w#cvrerenrbdetbedt RY oo eammeta 1 15 Les équipements] Bonenberg et la Société [ Vite coopérative agricole du ramassez le foin !
