has been given about the possibilities of Victorian Order of Nurses serving the Huntingdon County area.We want you to know that a continuing committee has not been inactive. The following persons have been ad meeting systematically ever since that announced public meeting at C.V.R.last winter: Mlle E.de Maisonneuve, Rev.P.Brown, Mme A.Mallette, Rev.G.Quenneville, Mme C.Seguin, Rev.A.Reid, Rev.H.Goold.Surveys have been made in the Valleyfield - Hun- tingdon area as to: interest ur.A Mr.DE.Black presented this communion table in loving memory of his late wives on Sunday to Riverfield Presbyterian Church.Rev.Alex MacDonald is at right.A complete account of the occasion appears elsewhere in this issue.Hinchinbrooke Fire Brigade preparing for Havelock Fair Innumerable details covering the procurement and serving of food at the Havelock Fair were gone over point by point until a satisfactory answer was found in each case. The occasion was a special point meeting of the Hin- chinbrooke Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Ladies Auxiliary.Presided over by Beryl Myatt and Liz McNaughton, the meeting got underway promptly at the Athelstan Fire Hall and lasted well into the late hours of the evening. At one time it seemed impossible that everything would eventually get straightened out, but due to the guiding hand of the ladies and the entnusiasm of everybody present all obstacles were finally overcome. The Bridage has already commenced active canvassing for annual donations of foodstuffs and money, and recently were successful in raising $182.50 in one area alone. This is most helpful as many supplies have now been ordered and will have to be paid for prior to any returns being received at the Fair. Now and Then To the inexperienced, the number of items that have to be considered is formidable. However the Brigade has had several years ex- periehce in this operation.and takes everything in its stride.Everything in this case not only includes hundreds of pounds of beef and ham.but such items as tents.trucks, tables, chairs.benches, dishes, napkins.lable cloths and advertising. And how about getting the right number of garbage pails in the right locations at the right time?On top of this all the cleaning up has to be done afterward.Visitors to the Fair will be pleased to know that with the exception of hamburgers (up Scents from 35 last year) the price of soft drinks, hot dogs, coffee and doughnuts will remain unchanged.A larger crowd is expected and preparations have been made for more and faster supplies of everything. An innovation at the Fair this anniversary year will be, the Holding of a dance in the evening at the agricultural building. The Hinchinbrooke Brigade will serve refreshments at the dance.Five of the seven young men that comprised the Hun- of the doctors of the area in visiting nursing services and the possibility of a municipality making a small.special tax to make such a service possible. While there was a variety of responses from the community doctors as to the value of this service, and a fairly general feeling from the municipalities contacted that an additional tax would not be desirable at this time.the Visiting Nurse Pilot Committee wishes to report that there will be a home care service instituted in the Valleyfield-Huntingdon area commencing in September.However.the above mentioned Committee can take no credit for this fact, although efforts of some members of the group discovered this exciting news before it was being presented to the public. As a result of the Castonguay Commission's Report.there have been set up within the past year coordinated home care services in almost all regions of Quebec.provided for from Government funds. The only area remaining is the Valleyfield district.ircluding Huntingdon- Ormstown-Hemmingford area.An office is to be set up in Valleyfield in September.under the supervision of the Director for Greater Montreal.Dr.Charlebois.Further details will be forthcoming soon from official sources.telling you what vou can do to receive home care service. In the meantime.the members of the committee above mentioned are seeking to co-ordinate with a weakly existing Committee in Huntingdon for senior citizens’ facilities.Watch for further news of this urgent need in the near future.Federal grant for Vallevfield Mill Mr.Gerald Lamel, M.P.Beauharnois-Salaberry.has advised The Gleaner that The Honorable Jean Marchand, Minister of Regional Economie Expansion.announced this week that u Valleyfield firm, Springdale Mills Ltd, is to receive a total of $218,000 under the Regional Development Incentives Act.The sum is for Springdale’s $316,000.expansion to its production line which will create four new positions and for an expansion programme costing $1,662,000 to a new knitting division which will create 44 new jobs. The government grant represents 8% of the total expenditure. As the knitting division is new.Springdale Mills Ltd.will also qualify for a grant of arrived at the Gill home in about 15 minutes and after preliminary examination stated that Don would have to be taken to hospital in Montreal. An ambulance was summoned from Labelle, some 45 miles distant, and contact was made with the Montreal General Hospital The ambulance arrived at 6:30 and at 8:45 the unfortunate victim was admitted. The fact that both Mr.and Mrs.Gill recognized the strong second half. They talk of a real GNP growth of 5- 114%-6% for the year, says Clive Baxter, chief of The Financial Post’s Ottawa bureau. These same officials are confident that this will produce a gradual, steady reduction in unemployment levels, despite the large numbers of young people entering the work force. In the face of a sluggish recovery so far, on what do the mandarins base this optimism? Why are they apparently so confident as they pack up to leave on their summer holidays?Baxter says it is partly on data that everyone has.Officials in Ottawa point, for instance, to the trends in the indexes of real domestic product.Released by DBS last week, these show a 0.5% in- ~~ increase in May is about in line with the 5.9% annual rate of rise since January. And partly it is the flow of early inside information available to government departments. As one top official put it to The Financial Post: ‘Look at it this way.Between April and June, there were 571,000 new jobs created. Those people have money in their pockets. What do they do with it?Believe me, they spend it.This is going to start showing up.And then there are all those new homes going up.People aren't going to leave them empty.” THAT HEMMINGFORD APPLE FESTIVAL - was one ot the best organized major events we've seen in a long time. Those tolks in the east end of the County certainly know how to do things right.Perhaps this will hecome an annual event?FLASH - maybe, just maybe Grade XI June examination results from CVRHS will be available for next week's Gleaner.Due to computer problems, marks were four weeks late in arriving. The problem is general throughout the province but Mr.E.Y.Templeton, Principal of CVRHS, and his staff are making every effort to compile the results. No blame for the tardiness is at the local level.SIGN NOW - OR PAY MORE SOON” - If you're considering buying a house.either sign up right away or reconcile yourself to a higher interest rate for your mortgage, at least over the next couple of months. The Financial Post's Frédéric Wagniere says that may sound like a high- pressure pitch from your real estate agent.but in fact it's based on current consensus among Canada's leading money men. They expect to see an increase soon of one quarter of one percentage point in interest on National Housing Act mortgages, which now range 9%-912% on single-family dwelling.Conventional mortgage rates may edge up a notch too.If you plan to shop for a bank loan, on the other hand, the news is better: rates for these are likely to remain steady.Wagnière says in The Financial Post. The expected increase in mortgage rates could disappear during the fourth quartera time when life insurance companies tradionally allocate new funds to the market.Howick Curling weeks we were saying have elapsed since “School's out”.We believe it was a good summer for most, at least we hope so.Weatherwise, we'd say few should complain.students who wanted summer work found but that's not unusual. We think most who earnestly wanted to work.found something. If not, they'll be able to end the summer well because apple pickers will be needed soon. One thing we'd appreciate both parents and students understanding, however: this newspaper hasn't received any pass lists jobs and some didn't, to print. We're informed that the practice of publishing pass lists in district schools is over and done with.It appears that this is one more change in a changing world which people will have to accept. It hardly seems fair lo students or teachers. We know of a Huntingdon youth who obtained one of the highest marks in the subject he Regional and his teacher deserve credit but it doesn’t look as if lad concerned doesn't want his name used unless the news comes from the school. Is that fair to him.to his teacher?Several phone calls have been received by The Gleaner over recent weeks asking when results of June examinations would appear.Sorry.there won't he any - the schools aren't supplying them. This new practice isn't unique with the Regional School. We doubt if the principal there or any of the educators like the new method any more than students or parents.Or province in a Chateauguay Valley School. We think he either will get it.The Chateauguay Valley ourselves.Reasons that the pass lists aren't being published is not because marks given in June examinations are much lower than marks attained during the sch:ol year or because there were an abnormally high number of failures.Rather, it appears that computers still make mistakes.disappointing We've been told that some students with marks have been advised that in order to have their percentages checked, they must apply to their local schools.Cost for this service is two dollars. This probably sounds unreasonable but Some primary to him.again it is general practice throughout the province. One reason for the charge is because if the service was free il is believed almost every student would ask for a re-evaluation.The educational system and teaching practices have changed so greatly in recent years that few parents understand much about any of the procedure. We consider (hat progress.Graduates of ten years ago would probably be lost today even in the grades because of methods of teaching.Mathematics and basic reading techniques, for instance.Yet both are spectacularly successful. For instance, an average child in grade three today can read almost anything presented unfortunate.but it’s the new It seems easy to criticize teachers for took at High this or that and to claim that schools today lack discipline. In a few cases possibly some of the complaints against certain teachers might be justified to a degree: certainly the records of a few students become known and their actions probably give the entire school a black mark; admittedly.it’s easier to skip classes in a huge school - but, we disagree with people who say children aren't learning anything at school today.Graduates today have a better education than those of yesteryears and that surely must reflect back to school and’ teachers.Even procedure such as not publishing High students examinations pass lists may be better for reasons which we don’t recognize at present. We've been told that in the local area who wrote their final in June have been contacting one another to determine how others fared. This seems a round-about way to compare one's own marks, but at the moment that seems the only way. Finally, while we can't identify successful students, we say congratulations to each.We wish we could say it more personally, though.Letters to The Editor The Editor, Humtingdon Gleaner.Huntingdon, Que.Dear Sir: I feel that 1 express in some manner the various degrees of embarrassment and humiliation that progressive thinking Canadians must feel at the thoughts of our fleet footed Mr.Sharpe genuflecting the image of Canadians in Washington over the ‘Nixon dollar affair’.He is evidently to be followed by Luc Pepin and Benson, ministers of trade and finance also noted for flexibility of the knees. One can image the kow towing and general debasement these glib tongued professionals are pantomining in the name of Canadians to alleviate any pressure that may be exerted on Canadian business due to the shaky American dollar. It would not necessitate a financial expert to foresee months and even years ago that sooner or later the American dollar would fall flat on its nose through the media of inflation at home due to too many spenders and not enough earners and the honourable Viet Nam war.Our own economy is thusly affected by the decades of improper administration on the part of successive incompetent governments that have sold Canadian heritage down the river for generations.Outside of the ignominious position of being ‘beggars’ to American business influence and being exploited by having to pay to give away our natural resources.Canada and particularly Quebec should have learned to stand on its own two feet long ago.Not because of any benefit derived from Communism or its effects, but because of the determination of a people to be independent from parent ‘leeches,’ China, Russia and other smaller countries have managed to free themselves from governing financial influences and ensuing close poverty from foreign controls. There is less excuse for us because we have the advantage of being in one of the richest geographical locations in the world. This would allow us not only to become independent from foreign and costly influence but to become a world power if we would implement our natural resources instead of paying to give them away.My immediate concern is the banner of prostitution and hypocrisy that will fly over Canada in the eyes of the world, when we have for the past years boasted and touted our national identity as being strictly Canadian and independent and diversified from the significant powers. Now at the slightest sign of any deviation from the paternal hand of plenty - the U.S.dollar - we panic and send delegations to Washington to plead for special exemption based on friendship - being neighbours - cultural affiliations and so sickening on and on.Where, oh where, is our national pride and identity in this case and in other past cases where we see our prime ministers and finance ministers lose their national respect when they have to go to foreign lands to beg for loans. This hat in hand attitude they must assume cannot inspire the people who elected them by an outmoded election system that only requisites a vote, certainly not dollars. What a heartless comedy emanates from the stages of Ottawa and Quebec as the playac- to:s go through their routine of pantomine that was and is supposed to formulate miracles.it seemingly all botls down to this, the elected officials are not really the people's choice and do not necessarily represent the true identity of the Canadian people, but are in reality the choice of the lessor of the many evils that are presented to them.Sometimes the choice is fair, sometimes bad, but never good.Quebec should and could be leader of Canada and eventually one of the greater powers on this earth, but never with the existing systems of election, taxation and cultural priority.Ken Story. One phase of the program of a road bridge complex was opened on Tuesday, August 17 when Mr.Kennedy cut the ribbon opening ‘“Montee Quesnel,” which eventually will become part of the new provincial highway number 30.The road, constructed by Salaberry Asphalt is just under one mile long and will, in time, be re-named “Chateauguay Boulevard" within the limits of the Centre. The provincial grant, expected to be $1,700,000 was described by Mr.Kennedy as one of the most substantial grants ever given.Mr.Kennedy also told The Gleaner that route 30 would eventually connect with a proposed bridge across the St.Lawrence River, through Lachine and directly on to St.Scholastique’s new jetport. This short stretch just opened is the first phase of the program and expected to result in the development of the area between the present route 3 and Haute Riviére Road.Last fall plans were discussed for the construction of a huge shopping complex similar to Fairview (Pointe Claire) in this area, which at the moment comprises of the L.P.Paré Polyvalent School only. The second phase will be the mile stretching from the school through to David Street, the last street in the Centre, just adjacent to Ville de Lery in the West End and of course the third phase will be the bridge which will probably be started in the Spring of 1972.Centre Town Planner, Lucien Colle, one of those present at the ceremony was especially happy to see the outcome of his plans which had been presented a few years ago. Also present from the Centre was Mayor Richard Sutterlin; Jean-Guy Leduc, engineer, his assistant Pierre Daoust; re Jean Chevrefils; ice Trudel; Pierre Monette; Provincial Roads Dept.divisional engineer.Roland Pronovost of Orm- stown; asst.div.engineer Raymond Dionne and two officials of Salaberry Asphalt, Messrs.Michel Hubert and Maurice Isabelle.Getting away from the subject of the plans for the Centre.Mr.Kennedy was asked when route 3 would be completed - the same answer was given - that accord must still be reached with Caughnawaga.Whether negotiations were under way, Mr.Kennedy declined to answer. On the pollution of the Chateauguay river: Mr.Kennedy said that Dr.Goldbloom was doing a magnificent job, but it was impossible to do everything at once. The job of cleaning up the river would be a costly one and no doubt in part have to be borne by the people.Valleyfield Mrs.Charles game.On Monday evening August 9, some of the Scouts from the First Ormstown Troop.accoompanied by Scouters Mr.Gordon Furey and Mr.George McKell went to the campsite at Powerscourt to do some work on the roadway.Nine Scouts turned out for the occasion and this is the story of what happened to the brave Scouts of the First Ormstown Troop that evening. The work started early that evening as the district council wants to widen the roadway into the camp in order to make it more navigable. All went well with the Scouters trimming down trees along the roadway and boys piling brush and hauling away logs and tree limbs. The work went on until 8:30 p.m.when it wus decided that enough had been done for one night, and that a tour of the camp should be made to see if anything had changed on their campsite since the last time they were there.Upon entering the main camping area, to everyone's surprise, the place was found to be full of campers with tents everywhere. They continued along the roadway which led to their campsite and found it vacant.but the Scouts of the First Ormstown Troop.being perhaps « little mischievous at times.were talking about how they mi::ht develop a plan to scar trail in iront of one of the Girl's camps and while passing they would happen to notice a shunk close to the trail They would yell “Skunk! Skunk! and then run away thereby scaring the poor little Girl Guides. It seemed like a fairly har- miess plan, so off they went and it wasn't long before we heard the cries of Skunk! Skunk!" All of a sudden the screaming and yelling started and there was a terrible uproar. Then one of the Scouts came running back to the Scouters yelling.“Come quick, come quick.they're all running for the cars.” The leaders quickly left the campsite towards the scene of the crime wondering how anyone, even Girl Guides could be that scared over the threat of a skunk.Upon their arrival on the scene, they were astonished to find a mob of girls chasing after the poor little Boy Scouts, and come to find out, it was not the girls that were running for the cars, but the lads. Two of the Scouts had been captured already and were soaking wet from being throughly dunked under the pump. When everything had finally subsided and leaders from both sides had their groups under control, we found out the real reason for EAST MAIN ST RD.ASW COMPLETE Inside Dining Facilities ALONG WITH Popular Curb Service OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK MALONE N.Y.CAR LIGHTS NEED TIRES WEARING, SEE SHERRY 9 f 264-3090 Î pRSRPURSESDSRSBESSPASENPSSSSSUSsssnasme SEE SHERRY who has an Atlas headlight aligning machine STEERING BAD ?for Bear Wheel Alignment and Balancing service SHERRY FINA STATION Corner CHATEAUGUAY and EAST FOCUSSING ?HUNTINGDON Ë = the outbreak. It seemed that that afternoon the girls of the camp had been bothered by some boys with fire crackers, and they had swiped some of towels while they were swimming. These boys were obviously not Scouts and certainly not the First Ormstown Scouts.SHOP AND After this had been explained to the girls, and that we only arrived at the camp after supper.the girls apologized and found a dry towel for the two soaked heros. The evening ended with joking and laughing on both sides, and most will agree that it was an evening that neither boys nor girls are likely to forget for a long time.ON SALE: AUGUST 25 - + varetine 34 HEIGL COMPANY Limeted Maple Leaf Grange The Grange meeting was held on Tuesday night, Aug.17 with Worthy Master Goodfellow presiding.Service and Hsopitality Chairman, Rita Kerby gave a financial statement of the sale of refreshments at the Hunter sale.and also thanked all who had made doughnuts for same.Anita 26 * 27 - 28 x Smith, another member of the Committee and W.M.Goodfellow also expressed thanks and felt it had been a worthwhile project.Special Com.Cecil O'Connor told of the plans under way for the refreshment booth at Huntingdon Fair and things seemed well organized.A letter was read requesting a donation to the Fund for the new State Grange Building.Under the direction of Janet Levers the display for Malone Fair by Maple Leaf will be made ready this week-end.It will be the maple industry of Chateauguay Valley.New Business - the discussion and purchasing of the usual trophies for 4-H work at the Fair. The Grange members were approached as to whether they would be willing to sell refreshments at an auction on September 25.This they agreed to do., The September meeting will be the election of officers and it is hoped there will be a bwtter attendance at this meeting.GREAT AUGUST Margaret Wilson asked for assistance to prepare the hamburgers for the fair.A float will be made ready also.It was decided to try to hire someone to clean up the refreshment booth at that time.A social hour was spent and Happy Birthday was sung for our Worthy Master.‘Many more birthdays, Art.” oh 4 BATH MAT SET 11.73 Each K mart DISCOUNT PRICE 6.77 .- WED.THURS.FRI.SAT.The luxury of nylon polyester high pile with daisy design for your bathroom at this low price!
