Ys Fther - Flash Athelstan Grist And Saw Mill | Gutted In Early Morning Fire | Athelstan suffered a tremendous loss early Thursday morning, when news went abroad that the Racine mill was on fire.This is the last but one, of several industries that were located in this small village and it will be a distinct loss not only to this com, munity but for many miles\u2019 around.) AND AROUND ORMSTOWN An accident which sent a bride and groom of mere hours to their deaths occurred on highway 4 near Ormstown at 6:30 Saturday afternoon, September 23rd.Charles Allen Abare of R.R.No.2 Malone and his bride Gail, nee Gordon of North Bangor, were on their honeymoon trip to Montreal.When they reached Ormstown, they found themselves following a local wedding procession.Mr.Abare attempted to pass the line of cars, as he did so a car driven by Johnnie Brown of Howick, son of Edwin Brown, pulled out of line.thus forcing the American car, a 1962 Chevrolet off the road.The driver lost control and careened into a tree, near the Nicolas Gut in the 21 year home.resulting instant death of the old man.Mrs.A- bare was taken to Barrie Memorial Hospital, where she died within the hour.A Miss Mathieu of Ste.Martine was instantly killed when her car hit a tree near her home.Miss Betty Snow of Montreal suffered severe head injuries when her car went out of control on the bush road near Clear Brook Game farm.She was rushed to Barrie Memorial Hospital where her injuries were found to be of such a nature she was sent to the Neurological Hospital in \"Montreal.1966 complete Miss Snow's Plymouth was a wreck, Romeo Guerin met with an 14 on September 17th, as he was driving along the highway a car backed out of a driveway causing an oncoming convertible to veer to the middle of the road, hiting the Guerin car broadside.Mrs.Guerin suffered injuries.A Rambler rolled over on No.4 highway on Sunday, when police arrived on the scene, no One was around, A tow truck from Huntingdon later removed the vehicle.Robidoux Meat Market Broken Into Mr.Roméo Robidoux, owner Robidoux Meat Market, Chateauguay St., Huntingdon ad an unpleasant surprise when he entered his store stopped over at Melville Brown\u2019s Farm near Howick, days before proceeding on to Expo.MOTHERS\u2019 MARCH OF DIMES Malone and other nearby on its way to Huntingdon.yesteryear.The train came through Huntingdon about noon on Sunday and it was quite a sight to behold The {wenty mules pulling a chuck wagon and a covered wagon, lead by a front rider with out riders and man at the rear holding a red flag, The covered wagon was painted with the words \u201cExpo \u201867 or Bust\u201d \u201cFrom Death Valley to Montreal Canada\u201d, and other such epitaphs.This train started oul from Death Valley, California In April.1966, and is expected to arrive at Expo about Octo hey 2nd.In the afternoon of Sunday the train arrived in Dewitt.ville and camped at the site of the skating rink in that village until Monday morning, Apparently il was time for a shocing of the mules, for while here this job was done, The rink shack was used and while doing so.some excite ment was caused by the stove pipes hecoming overheated.A little water soon had this un der control and little damage was done.The people with train did a good business with all the sightseers selling postcards and souvenirs, The Mule Train passed through Huntingdon and other towns enroute to Expo.Gene and his vonng twelve vear-old son and five other top professional cowboys moved twenty two mules, six horses and two wagons, (one wo covered wagon) lo Death Valley California, to begin a trip to Expo, whieh would be.As near as possible in this mechanical age.an approx mation of the overland trip taken hy his ancestors a hundred or more years ago.In addition to the 22 mules amd 6 horses, Gene has a eat which he picked up en route \u201cThis is no gimmick,\u201d said Gene, \u201cWe ae good people with a purpose, we transport.He saw the fire as he was making his rounds and gave the alarm.It ig not known if he was the person who knocked on Mr.Racine\u2019s door and gave the alarm there.- The Creamery at Athelstan is now the only remaining industry in this village, which at one time only a few years ago boasted several, One by one they are disappearing for various reasons.but this latter is the most disastrous so far.Since the foregoing was written it has been as certained that Mr, Racine is carrying on with his grist business with the help of a couple of other mill owners who have placed their facilities at his disposal.He has also retained his employtes änd is cIBariîng of Athelstan with the idea of using this for his grist business.He is going to rebuild on his own property in the near future.Twenty
