had at the EDITORIA ~ Editorial Notes.Confusing The Issues VERYONE must have heard about the Government's declaration of war on poverty and they must have read about a similar effort in the U.S.At the same time we are told that Canada is doing very well and its people have one of the very best standards of living.Another story tells us we are heading for inflation at a very fast rate, A second report from the Economic Council of Canada says we need much more productivity and this means more education. It says education holds the key to higher incomes. The latter is something which the educational authorities in this Province, at least, are working on and of which Operation 55 is the plan. This newspaper has advocated the best possible education for everyone, over the years. This rags to riches of which we are now hearing so much is something which in a way puzzles us.Perhaps we are not looking for the right kind of poverty as according to present day evaluation.Perhaps we are eyeing the view as the squalid type that was with the yester-years when men were oppressed by those in command. It has seemed to us, that poverty as we knew it, is now belonging only to the past.Everyone is earning and handling more money than they ever did. Some of them do not know how well to handle it and they are living it up to the limit and then some.Credit is a cheaper commodity than it was a few years ago, we do not mean that as the cost of it, but in the ease of obtaining it.It costs plenty — but it is used a lot and by a far greater number than could have obtained it a few years ago.Nevertheless, there is poverty.People earning low wages and with large families. They cannot afford to live in much of the new present day housing. They cannot afford to buy the best kinds of foods and therefore do not live on a balanced diet. This affects their health and they are classed in the malnutrition group.Much of this comes from a poor education in the first place and from the age of automation in the second place. There are very few openings for the unskilled labor classes in today’s world.Greater security is being planned by the government whereby as children are born into the world, the parents are paid a family allowance. Then when people become sick and need hospital care, provision is made for that. Now when a person dies at least a partial cost of the funeral expenses will be available, When people become too old to work, a pension will be paid to them, or to their dependents, should they die.It is therefore not entirely necessary to save for old age or sickness. This means that wages received can be used to a greater intensity and there is less likelihood of becoming involved in debt through such things. With the new educational program be ing unfolded, those who are not able to continue their education academically, should at least be able to learn enough for them to make a better living through the vocational training.By being able to take some trade training many of our boys and girls of the future will be better fitted for this new age.In this way we may be able to combat this poverty phase with which the government is so concerned, Machinery has gradually eased the ordinary laborer out of the unskilled jobs.Such jobs have been taken over by the machine and require that a person must have some degree of skill and intelligence in order to operate the machine. The point has been reached that if a person is not adequately educated in some skill or profession, there is no place left for them in this world. The government has therefore offered ways whereby people can be trained for other useful purposes and enable them to earn a living. If they are unable to continue at what they are, or have been doing, then they will have to be retrained for something else, It will be the only way to avoid poverty that prevails in this age.We also need to guard against inflationary pressures, which if allowed to get out of hand, could bring far more poverty than exists today. It is a far greater threat to our economic system. At the same time it will not do to check this too severely, for it could upset our whole economy too.If the matter is treated with due care and consideration, there is just the chance we could ease out and avoid the crash. So we say it is confusing, for while we are in the midst of apparent plenty, we are also bordering on want.We are on top of the precipice, not quite close enough to the edge to see over, but getting perilously near it.How deep is the abyss, we cannot say, but if we are not too curious, it could be that we shall never learn. We believe it would be better that way.The Late Mrs.Christine Sherrington N the passing of Mrs, Christine Sherring- ton, this area has indeed suffered a loss. However, she will live in memory for many years as the musical record she sought to create is carried on annually in the Chat- eauguay Valley. The people of this Valley were always of the musical type, but they did not do much to make their talents known. From early years, school concerts, amateur concerts and plays, dance bands and such, occasionally brought fourth those who had talent, Then this was put away for another time when entertainment was needed.Mrs.Sherrington, being a person of some talent, both in the musical and in dance routines, sought to bring this out by holding classes for these purposes. She soon found that there was eagerness to learn and progress in these talents.Seeking to further the advance of musical ability in the Chateauguay Valley, she proposed a plan whereby a musical festival should be held where such people could show their ability and in some way be recognized. At the same time it would prove that this Valley does have a large number of people with musical ability. After working away at her idea for a few years, she finally succeeded in getting a sponsor for it when the Ormstown Lions Club was organized. This organization has carried on with the plan and the Chateauguay Valley Music Festival was born.It is fortunate that Mrs, Sherrington was able to see her idea carried out and that it proved a success right from the start. She took deep interest in and did a lot of the work for it even though on a sick bed, right up until the very last. She sacrificed much that the ever increasing number of contestants could be given a chance to publicly display their talents and win useful prizes and trophies.lt is nice to know that so many organizations, business and professional people, municipalities and school boards and others, supported Mrs.Sherrington’s plan.It is to be hoped that even greater support will be accorded this festival in the future for in that way it will become an everlasting memorial to its founder and keep her memory alive in the interests of the art of music. It has been a worthwhile undertaking and it will continue to be, for it is building every year it is held.Perhaps a very special trophy can be presented as a lasting monument to this lady who did so much for the musical talent of Chateauguay Valley.Such a trophy should be awarded for outstanding talent and merit in musical circles. Our Weather Pattern VERYONE has had something to say about the peculiar weather we have experienced.Especially so was that over the New Year holiday when all the snow disappeared and the countryside was bare just like summer. The only difference was, we had our lowest temperatures to that date at that time, A light snowfall has manted the area in white since that time and low temperatures have maintained.A rainfall during this time made driving quite hazardous and the cities reported a large number of minor and major accidents. This area however, was fairly free of bad accidents.À few years ago, this newspaper said it believed that the number of nuclear blasts was having an effect upon the Ww The Gleaner” Published by Although every
