[" dint Aa = obile.it the RCE 1 Rotary Club Hears Salvation Army Speaker Huntingdon Rotary Club met as usual at The Chateau, Hun- tingdon, on Monday, with a very good attendance.Reports were heard of the Car being offered and of the Bingo which is being held tonight at Notre Dame School. While The tickets have heen selling better, the campaign is still not a full success. The committee hopes that by this evening there will be a much better response and thus they will be able to chalk up SUCCESS.According to reports, there should be a very good attendance from Valleyfield and nearby points and free bus transportation is being offered people of that area. This is for the purpose of attending the Bingo Party. The committee in charge, reported that all is in readiness for the big event and all helpers are willing and ready to be on the joh this evening. It was further renorted that an executive meeting of the Club directors had heen held and it had been decided after communication with President Cecil Brown to make a change in the Presidency of the Club.Due to Rotarian Brown being absent from Hun.tingdon in connection with his duties and there is no indication when he may return, he was asked if he would he willing to change his period of office. He was readily willing, thus Rotarian I.Sanderson takes his turn in the Presidency of the Club for the balance of the term.No doubt Rotarian Brown will resume his presidential office next year.Rotarian George Dixon was called to introduce the guest speaker and in turn called upon Brigadier N.B.Bell of the Salavation Army to make the introduction.Brigadier Bell introduced Colonel George Bramwell Smith.who is on special ser vice for the General of the Salvation Army.from the London office of the Salvation Army.He was born at Malvern, Worcester, England and has served with the Salvation Army for 43 years. He was also in the 1914-1918 war.During World War H he was a chaplain and service officer. He is with the public few jokes to tell the audience which hrought some very hearty laughter. The Salvation Army will: soon be observing its centen- i» actually next year, 1965 ary, and then a special celebration! iwill be held throughout the, world. The Salvation Army was started by William Booth in 1865, in London, England.| It was started through social services at first, that is getting people to work, providing them with food and so forth and was brought about by industrial conditions of that time.It was intended to get people to go to the churches of the day, those who did not attend such places that is.The reason they did not attend was due to their cultural standing. However, these people persuaded William Booth to form a society to which they could helong and this he did., It has been so successful that it now embraces the ‘world. The Salvation Army lhas not been accepted in every country, especially those behind the iron curtain, or in communistic countries. In such countries the Army had been working, but the authorities viewed their work with fear that it might influence against Communism and they were asked to leave. In China the work is still being carried on hy people the Army train ed, bul under Government supervision.A similar arrangement exists in Cuba, but with som” Army personne] staying there, Canada is looked upon with great respect hy the Army and it is expected that a large number from Canada will be in attendance in London, in 1965, for the centennial and already a very largé number of rooms have been booked for the visitors. He told how through a series of hardships and narrow escapes he had ceded his life to the service of God in a little chapel in France as he was returning from war service.[Since that time he has devoted his time to that service and had talked to many types of men and succeeded in helping them to mend their ways, He cited several examples of this for the audience._ Col.Smith's address was listened td with rapt attention and at the conculsion he was roundly applauded and thanked. On behalf of the members Rotarian Jon Proudfoot thanked the speaker and repeated the words of the speaker that The Salvation Army Notes.Ship of State By R.T.Reiter ANADIANS are increasingly becoming C aware of the shortcomings of our traditional political parties The fraction- jzation of the two major political parties into the present 5-partv parliament indicates the growing political maturity of Canadians who seem to be no longer satisfied with empty and meaningless election slogans. What, then, caused this transition from a two-party system to our present multiparty parliament? As early as 1899, at the outset of the Boar War, relationships within the two traditional parties had become strained. The consciption crisis of 1917 will forever remind the Liberal Party of the perils of political unity. But it was the period following th2 1921 elections which spelled the end of an era. From that year on until 1945, 1705 seats were contested in faderal elections.Of these the Conservatives won 542 with a popular vote of 32°, — the Liberals won 906 with 53°: of the popular support, while 257 s2ats were won by third parties. We also find that within this period, third-party support fluctuated, from a high of 68 votes in 1921 to a low of 18 seats in 1940.The two old parties seem to have received the best support during time of prosperity and tranquility, when the general electorate is reasonably placid and the least support in times of cricis, when voters ara more discriminating. In 1963 over 25°, of the popular vote went to third parties — more than | in everv 4 Canadians clearly expressed his dissasisfaction with the existing policizs of the two old parties.Politicians of the two traditional parties would do well to review the findings of the Rowell-Sirois Commission on Do- minion-Provincial Relations. While the Commission’s findings were basz:d on a study of socio-economic conditions following World War 1, they are at the same time discerninaly prophetic.“A society which prides itself on equality of opportunity found itself being divided into classes .The denial that the national policies of the two old parties furthered common national interests was a new political doctrina.“” These conclusions are as valid today as they were in the 1930s only more acutely so.Equal opportunities are today besing demanded bv those Canadians who, in the past, had been overlooked bv the controllers of Bay and St.James Street.I am not only referring to certain ethnic minorities in Quebec, but, to an even greater extent, to Western Canadians, who, in the words of the eminent Prof.F.Underhill, “form in effect Her Majesty's Loyal Canadian Opposition.” He referred of course, to the Socred governments Alberta and B.C.as well as to the late N.D.P.government of Saskatchewan.Up until 1920 both old parties had been engaged in the pursuit of national expansionist policiss, which served the needs of the times. The completion of the C.P.R.gram, followed bv th2 economic exploitation of the West, enabled the old parties to focus national attention on these achievements. However, as stated in the Rowell: Sirois Report, “by the 1920's these historic nztional policies had been accomplished. The balance at which Mr.King aimed was purely a static one.” Naither party has been able to cope successfully wth the changing social, economic and political conditions. The Conservative Party is aradually passing out of existence and the Liberal Party has not yet discovered its nzw course. It is this uncertainty which provides the cause for our concern. Is our parliament a floundering, rudderless ship?Recent Hansard racords seem to indicate this.Is the ra2cent critical by-election at Waterloo an indication of a further move toward third parties? The answer lies in our next gzneral election.| think it does.Your Support For Nurses’ Fund Urged TE Huntingdon Rotary Club is asking for everyone to support its Nurses’ Training Fund and for which this appeal is a last call.Tonight, there will be a bingo held at the Notre Dame School Hall and also the drawing for the car which has been on display at many points around Huntingdon for the past few months.Everyon> must have seen it and knows what it is for.A number have purchased tickets in connection with it, but still the fund is short and in need of more support. For the past number of years, The Huntingdon Rotary Club has sponsored this Nurse Training Fund and it has been quite successful over the years. However, this year, for some reason it has been going much slower and the drawing for the car had to be postponed in order for sales to be extended. It is hoped that tonight, many more people will subscribe to the cause and so once more the Club will be able to write success te the undertaking. It takes at least one thousand dollars for each girl to start off on her nursing course and it is necessary for this much at least to be raised each year.If more than one girl is eligible to take the course, then double the amount is needed. It is thus easy to be seen that considerable funds must be on hand to meet the demand that may be made.Whils perhaps this call may be a little belated, it is hoped that it will have a last minute effect on the people of the community to subscribe a few more dollars for the fund. Each girl that is successful in taking the course, means that our local hospital will be assured of nursing staff on the completion of the course three years hence.W2 cannot stress too strongly that your support of the very worth-while project is really needed at this time.We therefore urge everyone to make a point of attending the bingo tonight. In this way they will have an evening’s pleasure, have a chance of winning a very nice car and helping the Club to meet its aim to keep uo the Nurse Training plan. This in turn helps the Huntingdon County Hospital and the entire community. The Huntingdon Rotary Club is made up of local men trying to give service to the community and the Club has a very long record of service that it has rendered in many different ways.It will continue to give this service, but it does need your help — How About 1t?Recent Rainfall Should Help very bleak picture was painted in a A recent feature articla published in a Montreal Daily Newspaper as to the drought being experienced in Huntingdon by farmers of the community.Last summer was very dry and in consequence wells have run dry on a number of farms and also small streams and ponds have dried un.This is serious for this area, being in the dairy farming business, for water is quite necessary to keep the animals healthy, keep pastures rich and producing and to keep up a good hay crop. The rain which came over the week-end, while perhaps a bit late, may have a beneficial effect however. If we could have more of it before the weather gets too cold, it could be a help in re plenishing the dry wells.Once the ground becomes really frozen, there will not be much help until spring and a thaw. Then we shall nzed a good many spring rains to help the parched earth and a whole lot of snow during the winter months as well.Meantime the cattle will have to be watared and the farm home will also need a supply of water. It could mean a lot of water hauling this winter for a number of farmers in the area.Fortunately this can be done, although it means more work for those who have a shortag2 of water, or none at all.lt may mean that there will be a lot of ice cutting done this winter and using this to keep up the watzr supply. It should be a lesson in water conservation however and something should be done to see that more water is available for the futura.“The Gleaner” Although every precaution will be Yaken to avoid error, The Gleaner ac.septs advertising in ite columns on the understanding that it will not
