and near, Jimmy Williams passed away at his home on Williams Road, Hemmingford, on May 20th.He had suffered a slight stroke just after Christmas but had made a good recovery under the wateh- ful care of his daughter, Miss Ethel Williams. However in the past few weeks his strength was seen to ebb slowly away, although, to the end, his mind remained keen and active.Mr.Williams was born on May 2nd, 1876, in the little log house, built by his grandfather.one of the earliest settlers in the district, situated further east along the Williams Road.(It was this same log house which was the subject of enquiry at a recent meeting of the Township Council.Mr.William's father gave or sold it to Mr.Gload who moved it to the southern tip of what was known until recently as the Paré Farm). He was the son of William Williams and Eliza Orr, and he had one brother and three sisters. In 1896 he married Alice Wood and settled on his own farm, on the Williams Road. Here were born two sons, Percy and Russell and three daughters, Gladys, Mrs.Conger, now residing in Connecticut, Evelyn, Mrs.Dougall of Ottawa and Ethel, who re sided at home.In addition to being a fine farmer, Mr.Williams was a good horseman and a member of the 6th Hussars Cavalry Regiment.Holding the rank of Sergeant- Major, in 1911 he was chosen to represent his Regiment in London, England, at the coronation of King George 5th and returned, proudly wearing the Coronation Medal with which he had been presented by the King.Again, when the R.101.Airship was moored at St.Hubert, Mr.Williams formed one of the guard.Relatives and friends from far and near attended his funeral which was held in St.Andrew's United Church, Hem- mingford on May 23rd.The’ Reverend Gordon Ficko offi-| ciated. The Choir sang his favourite hymns, have changed and we have to revise our thinking to meet with the change, Canada is an independent country with its own form of government and it can well do its own thinking.Thera are sentimental ties of earlier years and many do not want to break away from them.Whether a break is good or bad, won’t matter much for there are definite signs of baing entirely independent. These new thoughts are just as deep dyed as the old ones and thers could be great bitterness if certain avenues are pursued. The id2a of a flag is not to cause dissention, but to act as a bond in bringing all Canadians together under one banner. The Royal Canadian Legion has a great sentimentality for the Red Ensign. The members fought under this flag in two of the bloodiest wars we have ever known. It is only natural then that this flag means something to them. This is not a distinctive Canadian Flag however and what is now desired is a flag with true Canadian flavour. We feel that unless the flag that is chosen is onz of univensal favour, that their will still be bitterness in some ranks. Some Societies would have to change their rituals somawhat if a new flag is chosen. The flag is a hot issue in more ways than one and will have te be handled very carefully. The proposed new design is quite emblematic of Canada. The blue bars on either side, representing the oceans which bound our country on two sides, with the Maple Leaves in the centre, Certainly the Maple Leaf is emblematic of Canada. In early days when patriotic days were held in England, the song — “The Maple Leaf Forever” was always sung to designate Canada.lt was a very stirring song and talked of Canada from shore to shore. It is hard to say just what is the fairest way of settling the question.Per haps it would be well for the government just to say — this is what we are going to have and that is that.It is rather dictatorial, but sometimes questions of this naure are better settled that way.It is most probable that if a vote was taken that there would be many disturbances throughout the campaign and at the time of voting. Not So Dear Old Dad N international expert on dadhood has the temerity to question the quality of Canadian fathars almost on the eve of Father's Day, a grand old institution developed by the greeting card companies and encouraged by the haberdasher.Canadian dads, says Professor Tadeusz Grygier of the University of Toronto, rate not so well in the masculinity stakes against their English counterparts. The Canadian father — and the American, too — is befuddled about his role as the masculine parent, Dr.Grygier concludes from @ series of personality studies on both sides of the Atlantic during the last decade :or so.ON he The Englishman is generally more masculine by Western standards and as a father figure he is superior to the North American vension, the professor says.“In pactically all groups of Nerth American males the tendency was to be less definitely masculine than a typical Englishman’s behavior, attitude to objects, activities, leisure and occupations.” The personality yardstick involved assessment of such things as strenuous phy.ical exercis2, introducing new ideas, examining tools and gadgets in shops and sailing in rough weather. In North America, demarcation of interests between men and women are not as well defined as in England and still less than in continental Europe.“Perhaps there is a general tendency for the North American male not to be such a clear model for a boy on how to be a man as they are in England or en the continent,” Dr.Grygier says.Reversing Freud somewhat, the pro- “ “Fossor finds also that siipshod fathers have more to do with shaping juvenile delinquents than do careless mothers.Canadads, unite, don some English tweeds, assume that English stiff upper lip and go sailing in rough weather. You have nothing to lose but your apron strings — or perhaps an ear from a flying rolling pin.D-Day Twenty Years Ago NCE again another twenty years have O passed since the world was at war in one of the bloodiest battles ever imaginable. At that time we were on the unpredictable course of bringing about the end of World War Il, or losing everything in the attempt.Extreme detail had been studied in order to make this D-Day landing on the shores of Normandy. It ‘was a colossal and daring undertaking, but it worked. When one stops to think the tremendous amount of equipment it takes to make an invasion and then the immediate followup of more and more of the same equipment in order to keep up tha attack, it will then be seen what a herculean task this D-Day attempt was.All of this equipment had to be kept from the prying of enemy planes, which had they spotted, would have started bombing at.Stealthily at the appointed time this equipment with ships and planes and men began to move out from the English side of the Channel toward the coast of France. They arrived for the landing and were able to establish a beachhead, even though the attempt had then become known. From this slim foothold and with tremendous fighting, they managed to get more of the equipment and men ashore and to gradually force the Germans to relinquish ground. It was only a few days until the Germans were on the run and the allied forces were on their way to Germany and the end of this second war.It was actually a marvelous piece of work — “The Gleaner” «ised ® The Huntingdon Gleaner Inc.KEITH HOWDEN, President and Publisher Entered as second class manpower and equipment, but it accomplished its purpose, the breakdown of the German Stronghold in Europe and the eventual end of the Hitler regime. The area was highly fortified and these fortifications had to be broken through. The Navy and the Air Force played a great part in the pre-shelling and pre-bombing of this shore before the men and equipment were sent in to establish the landing. It was all part of a well con ceived plan and timed to the second. There were some doubts as the zero hour arrived, but everything went well and the results required were attained.Invasions in this age are rarely attempted from the sea.In the days of long ago, this was the only means, by storming the beaches and engaging in hand to hand battle until a mastery could be won.Today the airplane goes in to soften up and then parachutists are landed immediately after, followed by equip: ment and key positions are taken and held and further advances made. There is no doubt but what D-Day shortened the war. With the Germans just getting into stride with the V-bombs, had they been left alone a little longer, might have again changed the tide of the war.The severe bombing given Berlin and othar parts of Germany itself were also other reasons why Germany was showing signs of war weariness.D.Day will live in our memories for a very long time to come.Ottawa, and for with such error and ordinances through which; man receives the grace of God.The young people were told that the first step towards Church Membership brought them as far as the Font, which is usually found just inside the church door. There they were presented for Holy! Baptism by their parents and godparents who made M.Ball about to be taken by the candidates, having received instructions and now fully understanding the promises they were about to make.with the laying on of hands. The Bishop continued thus, “There is still a third step to be taken which will bring you to the Communion Table, symbolic of the Upper Room where Jesus met with His disciples and there they gathered strength with which to meet life's demands. The Bishop emphasized the necessity of partaking regularly of food to nourish the body which would surely die if one was foolish enough to think that a meal at Christmas and Easter and maybe one other meal a year would be adequate nourishment.” So must we be nourished spiritually”, said the Bishop, “Don't be like some so-called Christians who think that attending Church a few times a year is sufficient”, If these people were given a mirror which could reveal their inner self, they would realize just how | spiritually impoverished they have become, + At the conclusion of the address the young people were confirmed and afterwards received Holy Communion which was also administered to the church members. An augmented choir [Body Found The body of Roy Kenny, of Ste.Catherine St.He is believed to have drowned on May 24 when he was reported missing.Oldest Veteran Of Branch 103 Passes By M.McCutcheon With the death of Hugh Followes Hanson of Crepin Street, the Station, Branch 108 of the Royal Canadian Legion, lost not only their oldest member but a Char ter Member.Mr.Hanson year Stein his Anne's Military Hospital (where he had just been for a short while) was born in Constantinople in 1868.He served in the First World War and ha lived in Vancouver, England and Montreal prior ing up son Cecil and his daughter inlaw Margaret of Crepin St.Mr.Hanson, an ardent gardener enjoyed his hobby and was in excellent health until the last few years. His wife, the late Enid Mar- 96th |B who passed away at § to tak- : residence with his : ¢ Vol.5, No.14 1 THE LEADING ADVERTISING MEDIUM VALEDICTORIAN MISS ANGELA SHEPPARD | 1964 Valedictorian of the Chateauguay High School Grad.VI take place on June 21st veal sharp shooting 1— LE CHATEAUGUAY, QUE, June 10th, 1964 , About The Chateauguay 1 Shoot Club Inc.2% à A few statisties might be in è i order in connection with the Lo."Chateauguay Shooting Club “Ine.” The 635 member Club - With 2 traps set up on the the Caughnawaga Road came (ito being last year i President RB Duranceau.the Organizer and one of the keenest workers outlined the plans and aims of the Group With enthusiasm Starting with one trap last year.a prive man team won the South Shore Meet and brought home ‘their 1st trophy.Plans were ‘readied for the erection of a Ÿ | 1 t ‘Clubhouse this Summer on the land which they lease, The next Competitive Meet Celebrate Fifth ; ;Ç (By Mrs.The members are anming for the honour of hosting the Five years ago.June 15th.Provincial Tournament in! young country, a self-govern- ing and independent country which, today, can assume its responsibilities in international affairs where its influence is well know. Therefore, Canada can and even must have a flag distinctive from that of any other country, showing that it is not under the dependence of any foreign or friendly nation.1 wish to offend nobody, but the red ensign still remains basically the flag of the British merchant marine, on which the coat of arms of Canada has been added.Only one fifieth of the surface of the red ensign shows a really and purely Canadian identification, that is the three red maple leaves on white background which appear on the bottom part of the coat of arms of Canada. From colonial states, our country achieved the status of a self-governing state. Then, it obtained its sovereignty and finally became one of the recognized nations of the world. This progressive and peaceful evolution took place without disrupting our relations with the motherlands of our founders. As this political evolution is now over, it is our duty to show it to the face of the, world.Your neighbours and friendsiin-law of St.Luc St.a lovely day andjyou a union jack instead of coat of arms of our country be in the foreground of a Canadian flag? Why should we not follow in respect of a national flag the same policy we started to implement, that is to strengthen Canadian thought, create a real Canadian image and, in a common effort towards understanding, unite Canadians from coast to coast.Mr.Speaker, it is mentioned in the resolution introduced by the hon.member for Elgin that the Royal Canadian Legion and the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire are in favour of the adoption of the red ensign as a national flag. So, before concludng my remarks.1 will discuss this point, for I am a veteran who served under this flag, as a member of the Canadian air force during the last world war.I am also a regular member of the Canadian Legion, section 62, in Salaberry de Valleyfield.1 admit that the national directors of the legion want us to maintain the red ensign as the Canadian flag.I did indeed go to Winnipeg for the opening of the convention, not only as a member of parliament, but as the delegate of my section, with a proxy when it came to the vote.I am far rom being convinced that all the members of the legion in this country are in unanimous agreement in this matter, and indeed, we have, lately heard were Saturday visitors to his!
