development of vision can Le done fur better ut for avorse, The visual experiences of ~hild are acquired but confusedly, The learn to distinguish them, clas- Sifÿ them, order them.apprehend heir significations. It is through practice and exercises that visual knowledge will become gradually more distinet, In this process of development, the sense of touch the spontancously child must and the local movements of the child play a very important purt, The child learns to see equally at the level of his nerves and muxsdles, He must develop the motility of his eyes, their convergence at near point, their :uda- puttion at different distances, their brain coordination, their ability of fixation, All these things require many vents of exercices.Although the child is born with visual mechanisms and u natural iptitude tv see, these visual me- ‘hanisms and this natural aptitude develop under the interior drive of the organism and along the visual requirements of the environment. But if the visual tasks p£ the child are too hard for his degree maturitv.his visual mechanisms tend to deteriorate, So visual problems appear, as the binoecular disorgaunizution and myopia, The science of optometry reveals to us that when the child begins tr go to school at the age of à or 6.he has not yet reached the visual maturity to cope with the aclhiool task.Therefrom the frailty of his visual mechanisms which can suffer easily from tensions and degeneration, The optometrist can alone save the situation, In regard to the first symptoms, he will iprescribe at near point glasses that will reduce the tensions and facilitate the comprehension.More than that he will prescribe visual training to strengthen the child's visual system and make it very easily operating.(Published with the approval of the Visual Welfare League, Incorporated of the Province of Que- hee.) ‘facts.Milk PASTEURIZATION The pasteurization of milk should be one of Canada's Tine VEEL thing Facts l OP i A pra ik Ce PET SAT gE = EE i 1) 5 1 Editorial Notes To Be Or Not To Be A T the present time another petition is being circulated protesting the use of two piers in the Chateauguay River to support the proposed new bridge that will replace the present Henderson St.or “Lower” bridge.Whether the petitions will be recognized and acted upon, or not, is a moot question. The town fathers seem to believe that the engineers know what they are doing and have adopted a “time will tell” attitude. There is no doubt that a new bridge is needed, it has been needed for a long time.It is outmoded, unsafe and a hazard. The proposed bridge will be wide (not high) but handsome enough. But why build it on the site of the present bridge?Aren't there enough bottlenecks at “McCoy's Corner” without adding more problems.jsn’t there little enough parking space on Chateauguay Street without lessening what we now have.isn't this corner dangerous enough now for pedestrians and motorist alike without adding to the confusion?Certainly, build a new bridge, but let's live in 1962, not forty or fifty years ago.Build it on a new site, one of many suggested, It seems that at some time the Town Council agreed that the proposed new bridge be built on the site of the present bridge so that's where it is going to be built, with or without piers in the river that could possibly cause flooding conditions, How many of the aldermen voted on the present site is not known, nor is it known if those who did, would vote the same way right now.The general concensus of opinion is that some of the town's old-timers just may be right and that the engineers just possibly be erring. One thing is certain, if it came to a vote, the group wanting the bridge outside of town would win just as quickly as the group supporting the proposed piers in the river.About the only redeeming aspect of the whole situation is the fact that Ken Fraser has promised “if the new bridge is a hazard or if it is going to cause expropriation of existing property later on” then we'll build another new bridge out of town." There Should Be Some Straight Thinking Done N irate parent called up the Gleaner Office on Thursday afternoon, asking that something be printed about the safety of children at the McCoy Corner. This party has two children going to school and one of them narrowly escaped being run over.It is natural that such a parent would be upset, ’ The Gleaner has repeatedly brought up the matter of this corner and the need for close supervision during the times when children are going to and from the school. It must be remembered that the children converge from all directions at this point. Some of the crossings that have to be made are quite long, depending upon the direction taken. The traffic does not slow up and turns the corner at the O'Connor Building quite fast and continues on down Prince Street. In order to relieve congestion on Chateauguay Street, all trucks are supposed to travel in a westerly direction along Prince Street.Probably due to the fact that the signboard stating this is not seen by all truckers, some of them still continue down Chateauguay Street. However, the fact that trucks are required to travel down Prince Street has created another hazard at McCoy's Corner and at a busy crossing to the school. There is nothing to compel traffic to slow down at ‘this point, except when it is blocked by other traffic, so it just right on through.Coming; off the bridge from Henderson Street and crossing either to Prince or Dalhousie Streets is a hazardous undertaking for the most experienced drivers as the driver is forced to keep his eyes in each direction of Chateauguay Street as well as keep his eyes ahead to ensure a safe crossing and dodge traffic from three or four directions. This being the case, it is hard also to watch for the pedestrians who are also attempting the same crossings.goes At rush hours like noon and 1 p.m.the traffie at this point seems to be in a desperate rush to come off the bridge, go onto the bridge, proceed in both directions along Chateauguay Street and cross from all directions from Prince and Dalhousie. One has only to stand a few minutes at this corner during a rush period to witness the mad melee that goes on.Naturally then the children, who either are leaving the school or returning to it are caught in all this mad rush. They have to get home too and they are walking, but the cars do not wait for them, they toot their horns to add to the confusion and to startle the children.Yes, there are stop signs, but half the time no one pays any attention to them. This ir ‘particularly ‘true as to one at the end of Dalhousie Street. Many times we have seen cars which have turned in from the east part of Chateauguay Street, almost collide with a car that has failed to stop at Dalhousie Street as roquired. These stop signs are placed there for safety sake, but they only work if car drivers obey them and stop. One cannot tell just when a car will come whizzing round the O'Connor Building, or from the other direction around by MeCoy's Store. We have often wondered who has the right of way at this point. To our mind the cars moving into Prince Street should have throughway.Cars coming off the bridge in any direction should proceed cautiously.Cars along Chateauguay Street should have right of way, but they should be willing to yield when cars have to make the bridge in either direction. If this method was followed we believe there would be far less confusion and less worried moments for everyone, It is definite that control methods should be used at this part especially during the rush periods. It may even take more than one person. From further enquiry it has been found that one of the town policemen is on duty at this corner at the noon hour, with the exception of Thursdays. This is due to each man having a day off each week and thus it works out that way. However, it is necessary that Thursday be taken care of the same as any other day, with the exception of Saturdays and Sundays. It is apparent that it is necessary for it was on that day that the parent called the Gleaner. Now we suggest that if the police force is not sufficiently manned, that the Town or the School Board hire someone, a retired person, for a few hours each Thursday to fill in this period. It seems that it is needed. On Courtesy To Others E have received a letter from a lady, who has connections in Huntingdon, but presently resides in New York. This lady was quite perturbed by the lack of courtesy of some people in Huntingdon. It appears that the lady had planned on doing in Huntingdon and drove down Chateauguay Street — Front Street, as the lady calls it, going in the direction of Montreal. She saw a parking spot and pulled into it, going a little beyond the area in order to straighten up and come into the curb.It was a one car spot with a driveway in front and at the rear. She was about to back up when a local resident pulled in behind her.The lady asked the driver to move as she was already in the area. The driver also a “lady” refused to budge and told the visitor so.She also suggested that the car be left in the driveway, or move it to another parking spot, after all she said, we live here you don't.As the first lady did not want to park against the law, she pulled out and went to another spot, Before leaving she gave these local people a piece of her mind on the subject of common courtesy to everyone. After re-parking, she decided to go back to these people and talk to them some more, but when she arrived they had gone. This lady said she spoke to a nearby storekeeper, a friend of hers and he suggested she report the matter to the police. At the time the police were quite busy trying to get trucks out of the area and other traffic regulation, that she decided not to.She makes the point however, that if visitors are so poorly treated by residents, shoppers to Huntingdon will by-pass the area.Such treatment will not be tolerated by anyone.Well lady, you have our trying to park in a small space, and in order to do so decided to back into it.We went a little ahead of the space and showed what our intentions were.On preparing to back up we found that a smaller car had slipped into the space and blocked us.There were words, but we had to move on or get ticketed for double parking. On another occasion we needed to make a rush to get over a snow bank and course needed space for the purpose. It was easy for any driver to see what had to be done. But no driver would give way and when we saw an opportunity to make our rush, we did so only to be blocked and have to stop in the middle of the snow bank, by an oncoming car.Consequently we were stuck there and had to be moved out.A few seconds stop by the other car would have avoided this.Yes, you are right lady,
