The preliminaries were pulled on Thursday and Friday nights with Thursday winners being Town of Huntingdon over Schenleys and St.Anicet over Hemmingford.Friday night, the Dow team from Valleyfield defeated St.Barbe and Hinchin- brooke defeated Dundee.On Saturday night, Town of Hun- tingdon defeated Dow and Hin- chinbrooke won over St.Anicet.The winning team was composed of Sergeant Provost, (captain), John Kkema, Henry Honsinger, J.P.Mourise, E.M.Perriot, G.Murphy, L.Murphy, E.Duheme, J.Barrington, R.Bertrand.Tax Rate For School ‘Set At 30 Mills For A regular meeting of the Hun- tingdon Protestant School Board was held at the office of the Prin- vipal at the High School on Thursday evening, with all members present and Principal Melnyk.After reading the minutes some correspondence was discussed and in il was an litem regarding the fire insurance, At present there are several policies carried, so it was decided to consolidate them into one en the building for $375,000 and one on the contents for $25,000.Today, (Wednesday) opening day of school for the new term, the children will attend until noon ulily.The teachers will put in a full day, but will devote the afternoon to arranging their program, ete.The financlal statement was presented and read and after a discussion, was passed and approved.This will be published in this newspaper.Discussion then ensued on the budget for the present school year and what rate to set the taxes to be paid, The secretary reported that he had made up several budgets with the idea of keeping the tax rate as low as possible and consistent with the need for school financing.He had finally arrived al one which called for a rate of 30 mills.The Board studied this from all angles and some thought that it should be lower.It was pointed out that if it were, there would be a large deficit and probably the Department of Education would not accept it.It was thus decided that the rate for this year would be 30 mills on the dollar.Fees will remain the same as last vear with the privilege of paying in advance and receiving a discount.The janitor brought forward the question of an increase in salary, due to the school being so much larger and it being necessary for him to hire help.He said he could hot possibly carry on the job alone anymore.The Board agreed that it Was now a two person job and asked how much increase he would require.He asked for $1,500.The Board was in agreement that the bresent janitor is doing a good job, but some felt the increase was perhaps a little high.The matter was lefl for awhile and then taken up again just before the close of the meeting, It was then agreed that in view of extra amount of work that is required to be done with the New addition and in view that the Previous work had been satisfactory, that the increase would be frome as and from September While the grounds have been levelled off, there is still much that has to be done to put them into suitable condition, This was discussed and it was decided to do fume work along this line and to have some gravelling and grading done.It was further decided to ap- broach Mr.Somerville, M.P.P.with further regard to blacktopping a certain area ‘ around the school building.An estimate had been re- telved on this earler.A committee will meet with Mr.Somerville with This’ ‘Year an idea of getting this work done before the pits close for the season.Marsh Land Sales Skyrocket Marsh lands of which there are several thousand acres in the Township of Dundee in the Broken Front Range have just lately taken on an added significance and recent sales of same are making owners along the waterfront considerably richer.Omega Realties of Laval des Rapides have during the past few weeks purchased about 2000 acres of low lying land along the St.Lawrence from several farmers who wished to dispose of same at the offered price of approximately $30.00 per acre.The largest block to change hands was at Dundee Lines where Mr.Ernest Therrien sold 615 acres of swamp marsh and some high land.Dupuis, Joseph Lalumiere.Optons have been taken on other ots.Purchasing agents for the Realty Co.have not as far as could be learned given any definite indication as to the ultimate purpose for which the land would be used.At any rate the owners consider themselves fortunate to obtain a good price for land which on the Town Valuation Roll is only assessed at a meagre three to five dollars an acre, Mr.Simeon Chabot, mayor of Dundee, has been active in arranging interviews with the owners which led to the completion of the recent sales.events going on during the af- jHinchinbrooke: judged in two entlosures near |Barrington.inight, Mr.J.M.Smellie.‘the Industria! dam system in operation at Val- made sales were Messrs.J.R.Pi- |leyfield, lon, Antoine Dupuis and Donald !levels have kept all the marsh the fluctuating river lands so boggy as to be absolutely useiess to their owners for pasture.These sales will relieve the interested ratepayers of the necessity of making yearly tax payments on useless land.Just how and to what an extent their new owners will benefit from the recent purchases remains to be seen.CELEBRATE MASS YELLOWKNIFE, N.W.T.(CP) — Hundreds of Indians and Whites gathered at tiny Fort Rae on Great Slave” Lake recently for centennial celebration of the first mass at the Roman Catholic mission of St.Michel.Center is George W.Thompson.BANK OF MONTREAL TROPHY PRESENTATION Tr ” es to Mr.and Mrë.Grant Whyte" for ANETY .SIXTH YEAR HUNTINGDON, ——— Vo semen eee Upper picture shows à class of 11 head of Ayrshires being judged before a sizeable number of interested “Bigger and better than ever”, is an oftgn used.therefore hackneyed expression in connection with livestock shows.However.we may pardonably, we hope, use that expression in connection with the Holstein and Ayrshire Shows held in conjunction with the 1959 Hun- tingdon Fair.In that connection we might emphasize that the “renaissance”, so to speak.of Huntingdon’s livestock show, including last year's show.has been mostly due to the Special Herd competitions.Instigated by The Gleaner, the following firms made the generous donations which enabled thz organization of these competitions: Shawinigan Water & Power Company: Chateau Huntingdon: Ltd.;
