the most impressive sights ever seen in Huntingdon took place on Sunday evening, December 21, at a community gathering in the United Church when the Cantata- Pageant, “Come Ye to Bethlehem" was dramatized by members of the Anglican, United and Presbyterian Churches and children of the Sunday Schools.Rev.W.R.Conrad conducted the first portion of the service and regretted that Rev.Thomas Knowles, Pastor of the United Church, was unable to be present through iliness. The front of the church was beautifully decorated with a background of evergreens, before which each scene was enacted. These scenes portrayed the people of Eastern lands waiting for the coming of Christ, who would take away their troubles and bring Peace to the world. The beautiful Eastern costumes of the three Wise Men bearing gifts, Shepherds watching their flocks, the Angel, and others were enhanced by the coloured lights which shone around them making them look v realistic. The final scene was where the children marched in and came to watch around Mary and the Baby Jesus, with the Angel near-by and the star shining high above them. The united choirs burst forth with “Joy to the World, the Lord is Come”, the whole making a lasting impression on the audience.Musio The music in connection with the pageant was sung by choir members of the three churches. The solo part of the Mother was sweetly sung by Miss Minnie Allen, and the women's volces in “Christmas Night”, sung during the Manger scene, were worthy of note.Special mention is due the male quartette comprised of Measrs.Grant, J.B.MacMillan, 8.Liversidge and I, Mc- Whinnie, in their rendering of “Where is He?" and “We Three Men of Orient Are”.During the offering, Mrs.K.Ross gave a fine rendition of “O celebrate that great day of ah day: s in the Christian world. It would seem that only in remote parts does the spirit of goodwill and peace on earth evail In our own Can and on the American continent is perhaps the only place in the world today where real Christmas fare will be enjoyed in peaceful surroundings. Many countries while not actually ering from warfare, are in such a turmoil that such might truly be going on.In some countries the people are living on such low means of existence that their Christmas will not amount to any more than a passing significance. The people of England are to be allowed small increases in their rations, but such will not make for a merry Christmas as was known in that country before the war.France and Italy are torn by strife of one kind and another, and China is still in the throes of a civil war.The trouble caused by the proposed rtitioning of Palestine, has left the land of Christ in a turmoil that far from resembles the joyous occasion of His birth at an inn at Bethlehem. However, history records that when Jesus first entered his lifework at the age of 30 years, there were troublous times in Palestine and the Jews were irked by the oppressions of Roman rule. They then yearned for the promised Messiah to free them from this oppression.Today their pe t is much the same and they are seekin tine as their own country, from whic they were driven. In that country today warlike fighting is going on between the few e Romans have left.try which might be called the oth pince of the Christian belief is a cour strife and hatred. It may hap that many places where Christ preached and which have been kept in preservation, profess faith in God or in some other form of elief, there are still some who do not follow the Christian religion in true form.Christmas is a time of gifts, not giving and receiving to outdo the other fellow, but giving in order that all people may receive the blessings that the birth of Christ was supposed to bring about — Peace, Love and Goodwill on earth. Not just in Canada, or the United States, but all over the earth to all men.Until such time as the peoples of the earth are again living in harmony Christmas cannot be merry in the true sense. The opportunity being afforded ta send foodstuffs to Britain, could constitute a Christmas offering to the unfortunate people of that country and be a token of our goodwill toward the peace and hopes of their future. This may present some sacrifice on our part, but such is the real spirit of a gift — not that for which is received in return — but for the sake of the good of others and being able to share our more fortunate conditions.Goods this year are in more abundance insofar as this country is concerned, yet there is a care being exercised in buying that betokens a fear that shortages may prevail and our own living standards be curtailed. We can only do our best and make Christmas as joyful as possible by entertaining our families and friends and living through the prevailing spirit of the season with the hope that Peace on Earth will come once again to all men in true force and meaning.Business People Greet You I" will be noticed from this issue of The Gleaner, that the business people of the large area served by this newspaper, are very anxious to send their greetings to the customers of the various districts which they serve. Most of these business people carry their regular advertisements throughout the year and they are most grateful for the patronage extended to their services. They therefore use this medium for expressing their Christmas wishes as being the best means of reaching the greatest number of their patrons and customers. In the past year The Gleaner has increased its coverage of the district it serves and thereby has added greatly to its circulation. This increase in circulation gives the business people of the district greater opportunity to send their messages to those who will be patronizing their places of business. At the same time it provides subscribers with a greater coverage of news from the district in which they are interested. The Gleaner by studying these interests is therefore providing a better newspaper for all. While every opportunity has been given for all to make of ho s to Sond messages and good wishes at this Christmas season, it is quite possible that some may have been missed tor reasons beyond our control or because of circumstances which contacts could not be made. However, there was no intention to pass any by who would have wished to fo included eauguay, Que., (Contributed "by Katherine Lang) as far as can be learned.Rev.Alexander Gale, a Presbyterian minister of Lachine, Que.in connection with the Church of Scotland, paid occasional pastoral visits during the year 1832.In the following year Rev.Walter Roach, who came on July 2nd, 1833, was inducted pastor of the united congregation of Beauharnois and Chat- eauguay at the former place on December 1st and the latter on November 24th.For the next seven years services continued to be held in Mr.James Lang's house, who had recently come from Greenock, Scotland, for the settlers were too few at that time to build a church. In February 1836 land, a short distance above the bridge, was secured for a church and cemetery, as at this time this section was the centre of the Protestant commun- was regularly opened for public worship. It was a brick bullding, built on the brow of the hill.Mr.Roach was indefatigable in collecting money towards the erection of the church.Quebec, Montreal and Lachine were visited when £134 were received. As the Protestant people living in the direction of St.Louis and attending the church at Beauharnois, increased in numbers, the preaching services formerly given to Chateau- guay were shared with them. The need of more frequent services than the pastor could possibly give was felt by both pastor and people of Chateauguay, and the Disruption of 1843 made it more-convenient to secure these services from those in connection with the Free Church. In the year 1849 the Rev.Walter Roach entered into his rest.In 1850 the Rev.Thomas Haig was inducted minister of Beauharnois but not of Chateauguay, although here he performed pastor duties. The same year Rev.Donald Fraser of the Free Church Presbytery of Montreal promised supply missionary services of Rev.Messrs.Laing, Scarth, Allen and Patterson and this was followed by the supply of the Rev.David Black continuing from 1858- 1865, After this students from the Presbyterian College, Montreal, under the direction of Principal Mac- Vicar supplied the church until 1 In 1875 when the general union of the Presbyterian Churches in Canada took place, Beauharnois and Chateauguay united and in 1876 a call was extended to the Rev.Thomas Bennett.During the following period members of the “Auld Kirk” and the “Free Scottish Churches” were dwelling together in unity and in Christian work and worship.‘The second church, a stone bulid- ing was erected nearer the road, the cornerstone of which was laid on July 29, 1880.The Rev.Thomas Bennett was called to Carp, Ont, in 1881; he was followed by Rev.James Boyd, who was inducted on January 20th, 1882, and who labored till the time of his death, December 15th, 18986.On March 25th, 1897, Rev.J.D.Anderson was inducted and was pastor of the congregation until February 5th, 1907, when Chateau- guay was separated from Beauhar- nois owing to the rapid growth of the Chateauguay congregation. It was now felt that the stone church in the upper village was too Short History St.Andrew’s Church, Chateaugusy, Que.Committee; Mr.Peter Paving Clerk of the Session and Secretary of Building Committee and the following members: Messrs.Willlam Watt, D.W.Tully, R.A.and Wm.Meldrum.These gentlemen after several conferences } bought a piece of land from the| ail Dupont estate, which enabled the church to be erected on an eminence.Plans were made by the architect, Mr.J.Seath-Smith.In 1809 Rev.J.C.Nicholson accepted a call to Sherbrooke, Que.The Rev.J.D.Anderson of Beau- harnois, Que.was interim moderator, who, laid the corner stone on August 7th, 1909.The congregation extended a call to Rev.George MacLennan of Norwood, Ont., who was inducted September, 1909.The church was opened for services on March 20th and 27th, 1910.Mr.MacLennan remained until January, 1918, when he accepted a position with the Bible Society.Rev.R.W.McVey took up the erected.Rev, J.T.Conn was the next pastor who remained until June, 1925, when St.Andrew's entered the United Church of Canada.Rev.W.T.Prittie was the first minister of the U.C., he being inducted September, 1925.He remained for ten years and was succeeded by Rev.À.M.Rose who remained for twelve years and accepted a call to Stanstead, Que., in September of this year, and has now been succeeded by Rev.Donald R.Morrison, the account of whose induction was given in the last issue of the Gleaner. The three churches were honored with the apostolic name of St.Andrew.It is not to be wondered at that a congregation which has passed its 114th birthday should find it necessary to locate its church in some more central spot than that chosen at the time of its organization and that it should be contemplating further growth, situated as it is, in such close proximity to the ever enlarging city of Montreal.Nitre Village Briefs .NITRO BOWLING LEAGUE Bowling is the major activity in this community.Over 140 of Nitro’s adolescent and adult population triple is a long way from the alley record of 1009 rolled In the season of 1944.The same season à high single of 430 was registered.Myrtle Brason of the Parkers with an average of 182, heads the women bowlers and will be hard to displace from that position. This league operates under the 4/5 handicap system and attracts everyone from our youngest, age 17, to our oldest, age 69.By the time this paper comes off the press six lucky bowlers will have won six chickens in our Christmas drawing.Bowling will be suspended from December 18th to January 6th, with the alleys being open for casual bowling on past week, formed a governing body and picked clubs for the 1947-48 season. The decision to revert to sponsorship of teams in the Senior Section met with general approval, for under this system a more competitive spirit is generated that makes for a more satisfactory situation all around.Naturally, former sponsors will be given priority. However from all reports it appears that there may be one and possibly two openings which will give local merchants the opportunity of backing a team.A strong working sub-executive has been formed to handle the hockey activities with Bill Canvin as president and Albert Prégent as recording secretary.Leo Leduc, popular local sportsman will handle the publicity chores, assisted by Hank Canvin.Pete Gilbert heads the men in white, ably assisted by Bill Yarnell.Mr.George Casavant once again kindly consented to look after the hockey programme as well as accepting the position of chief time-keeper.Norm.Goodale, Sr.will look after First Aid at the rink as he has done so competently for many years.Official goal judges will be Bud Hamilton, Allan Jack, Alex.Laurendeau and Romeo Bris- son.In charge of equipmeht will be Mr.Laliberté.Teams in the Senior Section lineup as follows: Team “A”"—J.P.Sabourin, G.while just behind five teams are closely bunched.Myrtle Brason apd Mib McCuaig head up their respective leagues for high average.During the past week the commit- te held a drawing for six chickens which were won by Mrs, McCuaig, Jim Hillman, Jim Moon, Jack Heinz, Albert Debellefeuille and Frank Coughlin. There is no doubt that the come mittee has done a fine job of handling this league, to date.It has already decided all detail concerning play-offs, prizes and dance to wind up the season in April and there is
