favorable.The resutls of their study are as follows: A - Sanitary Landfill - Hemmingford As pointed out by the consultant, the soil in the the area consists of a silty till, which is highly Perilous.Because of this a double base liner with leak detectors between liners will be required.This adds about $4 million to the cost of the site development.To make an environmentally acceptable dump site in this area a sum of $5,144,000 will be required just for the setting up of the dump facility.This will result in an annual cost of $819,260 or about $133/a year per household, excluding pickup charges from residences.B- Private Disposal Site A private site at an average distance of about 22 miles from our M.R.C.center of population will accept our garbage for a tipping fee of $12 per ton.This would incur an average cost of about $48.95 a year per household, excluding pickup charges from residences.C.- Hemmingford Incinerator A complete incinerator package installed in Hemmingford would require an initial investment of $1,814,500.This, with operational costs and environmental monitoring, would result in an average cost of $65.04 a year per household, excluding pickup charges from residences.Further cost savings can be achieved for all of the above alternatives by implementing a recycling program; that is paper, glass, metals and plastics.In conclusion, it is imperative that whichever alternative is ultimately selected, no adverse environmental impact should be tolerated in our M.R.C.or at any external site.This committee, therefore, believes that the sanitary landfill alternative presently being studied by the M.R.C.must be abandoned solely on cost considerations.These figures were derived from suppliers of different materials etc.and the cost estimation from Guides for 1985.Arena Committee pays tribute to Mrs.Lefebvre At the annual meeting of the Huntingdon Regional Arena Committee on Tuesday, June 17, a cial tribute was paid to Mrs.Palmyre Lefebvre who is resigning from the job as Arena Manager after eight years of faithful service.The honor of thanking Mrs.Lefebvre was left to Lucie Loyer.a councillor representing the municipality of Ste-Barbe.Mrs.Loyer spoke of the great availability of Mrs.Lefebvre, the endless hours she spent at the arena, her presence for young people at all hours of the day.Mrs.Loyer also mentioned the work done by Mrs.Lefebvre in starting the broomball league for wbmen, in having the players\u2019 dressing rooms and the upstairs hall built.Another important task carried by Mrs.Lefebvre was preparing the schedule for ice time, which required a lot of time and care.Mrs.Loyer closed her remards by saying that everyone will keep a very fond memory of Mrs.Lefebvre.The president of the Arena Committee, known in the Town of Huntingdon and surrounding area, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 1986 at the Hun- tingdon County Hospital.He was 77 years old.Cappiello served as mayor of Huntingdon, from 1949 to 1959, and then again from 1965 to 1971.Even though he wasn't on the Town council in his last years, he was always interested in municipal affairs and sometimes took pen in hand to express his views through local newspapers.Through his 16 years at the helm of Huntingdon's municipal council, he is said to have run a tight ship and many admired his skilful management of the Town's has been bothered by what he believes are wolves for the past two or three years.Clifford says it all started with the wolves howling around 11 o'clock at night, in the wooded area just across the road from his property.He claims the noise was so loud that it seemed \u2018\u2018there must have been at least 50 wolves out there\u201d.But, according to Williams, this year is the first time that he has lost any cattle.He states that he and his children have seen only one wolf at a time in the pasture with the cattle, which are kept in an open field in front of the house.A fence has been put up to keep the cattle in a three acre field so that the family can maintain a close watch on them.The Williams family says that the wolves show up at any time of the day, and they seem to seek only the baby calves, about a day old.The last carcass found was that of a calf they know was killed during the night, because they say they saw it still alive before dark.Clifford says he first noticed that wolves (or what he thinks are wolves) v were after his cattle in March, when he noted one of his cows was ruined due to too Much milk mn the udder, and the calf was gone.Now Clifford 1s forced to keep the cattle in the barnyard at night.The yard has a regular fence around it, and an electric one inside.The besieged farmer hax installed an electric fence approximately one foot from the ground and save a little money in your gardening budget.For exmple, earwigs and slugs, which often cause serious losses in home gardens, can be lured to their doom with a simple trap made from two grooved wooden boards.The grooves should be about 4 millimetres wide and 4 millimetres deep and should match up exactly.Then prop the boards up in the garden.At night, the earwigs crawl in.In the morning, shake them out into a pail of soapy water.Slugs will also crawl under boards placed on the ground beside your plants.You can scoop them up easily each morning and destroy them.In addition, these soft, slimy creatures can't stand rough surfaces.Often you can stop them in their tracks by sprinkling stone dust or sand around the plants.You can even wage \u2018germ warfare\u201d on insects.Dr.Pucat says.Some gardening centres now carry an insecticide called Bacillus thuringiensis.It's sold under the trade names Dipel and Thuricide.While harmless to people, pets, birds, and fish, this bacterial spray attacks caterpillars and other moth and butterfly larvae, including cabbage worms.Plain soap and water Plain soap and water can also be a good control for small, fragile insects, such as aphids and mites.Dishwashing liquid can be mixed with water and sprayed directly on infested plants.Several insecticidal soaps are also available.Aphids, along with small flies, such as chrysanthemum leaf miners, are attracted to the color yellow.Many garden supply shops carry yellow sticky tape which can be placed throughout the garden, since aphids attack nearly all vegetables and many flowers.Cans of soapy water set around the garden also make a cheap trap for earwigs, which love to crawl up surfaces.If you do use chemical controls, here are some guidelines recommended by Agriculture Canada: - JUST LIKE OURS.\" THERE GOES A TRAILER The CVESPA Column The Chateauguay Valley English Speaking Peoples\u2019 Association Results of CVESPA's Parent Attitude Survey At a meeting on June 10 in Ormstown, the preliminary results of the CVESPA Taking part in the meeting were, L to R: Michael Alston, Brigitte Thomas (McGill consultants), Reva Heft, Donald Ednie and Janet Hicks.Parent Atittude Survey were presented.Attending the meeting were School Board Chairman, Andrew Fawcett and Director General David D'Aoust (PRSBCV), School Principals, Kevin Deegan (St.Joseph's) and Stan Liupec (St.Johns High School); and school committee representative, Brian Mulhearn from St.Willibrords in Chateauguay.Also participating at the meeting were CVESPA Board and Education Committee Members: Leigh Coffin, Don and Jolene Robinson and Board Member, Malcolm Orr.The presentation was introduced by Donald Ednie, Chairman of the CVESPA Education Committee; and Riva Heft, M.A., Consultant from Concordia (Adult Education, Loyola), provided background on the development of the questionnaire used in the survey.The objectives of the survey as Mrs.Heft explained were: 1.To measure the attitudes of parents toward the learning of French by their children: 2.To identify parents\u2019 concerns regarding the learning of French by their children: 3.to evaluate the actual home environment and support available to help children learn French, 4.to assess what parents are prepared to sacrifice, educationally.socially and economically to help their children learn French.The work of designing the questionnaire was undertaken by the Education Committee in consultation with Mrs.Heft and with much community participation coordinated by Leigh Coffin.Background At the meeting.Janet Hicks, CVESPA Executive Director, presented a background paper on the study.describing the population wich was surveyed The parents were associated with 12 elementary schools Huntingdon Academy.Howick Elementary.Franklin Elementary.Hemmungtord Elementary.Ormstown Elementary.Gault It stitute.St Joseph s Elementary, St.John Elementary (St-Jean).and (in Chateauguay), Mary Gardiner Elementary, Centennial Park Elementary, Robert A.Jobber Elementary, St.Willibrord- Elementary; and two regional high schools, CVR and Billings, and one junior high, St John High School (only parents living west of the Richelieu, such as in Lacolle were included from St.John schools).There were 2669 questionnaires mailed out, of which 710 were returned for analysis representing a 27% return.(A 10% return is considered normal for this type of survey).Members of the Education Committee who participated in the development of the survey are: Donald Ednie (Chairman), Don Robinson, Jolene Robinson, Nancy Anderson, David D'Aoust, John Watson, Leigh Coffin, Janet Hicks and Maurice King.Reasons to learn French The computer analysis of the responses was performed by the McGill Business Consulting Group.Michael Alston and Brigitte Thomas presented the results of their analysis to the meeting, using an overhead projector to show various tabulations - 68% of the questionnaires were answered by the mother of the family and 85% by two- parent families.The overall results of the study indicate that 64% of parents feel it is extremely important that their children learn French and another 33% feel it is fairly important, giving a total of 97% who indicate a fairly strong \u2018desire that their children learn French.The reason parents give most often for wanting their children to leam French is, not surprisingly.fot improving employment opportunities.(very important for 78% and \u2018important\u2019 to a total of 98% ).Another significant reason is: stimulating personal growth and development (very important\u201d to 44% but also considered an \u2018important\u2019 factor by a total of 82%.Cola ne LUNCLFHS wentibed by the survey.the greatest worry of parents is the possibility of some English schools closing À tull 90% are actively concerned or unsure about this situation.Also, 73% are either concerned or unsure about the possibility of some teachers being displaced if the schools had more French.There is still 48% of parents who are concerned or unsure as to whether the English language skilis of their children will suffer if they spend more time learning French in school.The psychologists and educators tell us that learning a second or third or fourth language sharpens our minds to the use of words and actually improves our use of our mother tongue, but obviously, many people have yet to be convinced of this.It is interesting to note that 51% of the parents surveyed do not know what programs are currently offered by their school board to nelp their children learn French, however, 70% are concerned that not enough French is being taught at the elementary level - 61% hold the same concern for the high school level.Classroom not enough One of the concepts which became clear during the research for the survey is that a language cannot be learned effectively by classroom study alone.The home (or street) is a very important factor for providing practical use of the language.The survey shows that 62% of parents (often or always) do encourage their children to have French-speaking friends, and 539% encourage them to speak French at home.However, only 36% encourage them to read French and 29% encourage the use of French TV as a learning tool.For bilingual program The survey asked parents which educational options they are willing to consider for their children, Least popular is the idea of a french school: 66% reject this option.58% reject the option of a school outside our regional school board and 49%, reject the option of an immersion program in their local school.The most favored option is that of a bilingual program in the local school (50%, English.50% French» 69%, ol parents agree with this choice and another 13% would consider it \u2018not ~urei.for a total base of poicntial support of 839, Popular options Parents alco diate + & Cards of Thanks, In Memoriams, Marriage Notices, Engagements, Announcements BARRETTE -
