of hard work" by PHIL NORTON A lot of hard work on the part of the Fair Board” is what Ellen Bulow attributes to the fine turnout at this year’s Huntingdon Fair.As person in charge of admissions she estimates over 10,000 people came to the 1984 exhibition almost double last year’s figures. The 1983 Fair experienced a disappointing drop in attendance and created concern for the future of one of the province's oldest fairs. The Board responded by shortening the event from four days to three giving organizers a full Thursday to set up before the crowds arrived.‘Last year we realized we were down but.not out”, recalls Ms.Bulow.“We knew we'd have to spend this year fighting to bring it back”.She says the Board tried to get the country back into the Fair while remaining considerate -to city people who don’t know Parc Safari entertaining record crowds Publicity over financial difficulties helped New owners: by Shirley Seller Parc Safari is having its best season in eight years. The last two weeks in July were the best ever with an average of 1300 to 1400 cars per day and more on weekends.More than 180,000 people have visited the game farm since it opened for the season; and, although attendance can be expected to drop to between 500 and 900 cars per day in August, figures are expected to top 230,000.“We have almost met our 1986 projections ‘this’ year”, Danny Kyle told The Gleaner last week.School tours got the season off to a good start with some 14,000 children enjoying a day at the park. For the first time American schools accounted for half of that number, an encouraging sign that the park is beginning to attract some of the large market in the northeastern United States. At present, 80 to 8 percent of the visitors are Canadians, most of them trom the Montreal area.Kyle sees the takeover of ownership by himself and his two partners, Dave Jackson and John Moran, r and poultry.Column.councils.Fair the focus of their advertising campaign, and they have played a large part in helping to create the excellent ads which we have been hearing and seeing.According to Kyle he and his partners knew where the problems were and they are now able to apply their practical solutions without meeting resistance at a higher level. They have moved away from the gimicks which the former owners thought would attract people, he said. They want prospective ticket buyers to know that a visit to the park is ‘a day well spent”, an interesting, funfilled and economical family outing. The new owners therefore restricted their advertising to radio and T.V.stations which cater primarily to family- oriented audiences. They also stress the fact that the monkeys now present in park do not cause damage to cars, and that people can drive through the wildlife area with their windows down.‘Everything fell into place”, Kyle said as he looked around the smoothly running operation which came within four days of closing. He readily admits that the large amount of free publicity which their difficulties engendered played a part in bringing in recordbreaking crowds.“The press has been super.and the weather incredible”, he said.He also gives credit to a good group of managers, most of whom have been working there at least five years and some of them since the opening. They work at the park six or seven months each year.hire their own staff, and run their departments as separate entities. Most of the staff, which expanded to 135 this year from around 90 last year, is made up of students who live in the area between Havelock and Noyan. In the pet corner, Colette Lussier acts as mother hen and keeps a watchful eye out for the welfare of a brood which includes free roaming goats, lambs and waterfowl; as well as llamas, kangaroos, emu, a cougar and two baby jaguars, to mention just a few of those which are behind fences.Under her special care these days are two silky black kids, only one week old.One of these twins is stronger and friskier than the other, and he is already scampering over the rocks with great agility.“A day well-spent " A visit to Safari begins with a drive through the wildlife area where some of the species can be seen nose to nose.It is not unusual to see a dromedary standing sentry at the entrance, bending his neck to peer into each car which passes by.When these animals have all been observed at leisure.and those in the children’s zoo have been petted, there is still plenty of fun ahead in the amusement area.Tiny jockeys can enjoy a pony ride, and the more adventuresome can climb aboard a circus elephant.Seven new mechanical rides have been leased from the former Belmont Park for the season lo supplement the five rides which were already on site. Most of them would appeal primarily to the pre-teen group, and they are moderately priced, most of them ranging between 40 and 80 cents. An all-day ride pass can be purchased for $5.00.In the grandstand area one can watch Rix's twelve superbly trained bears - a daring combination of black, brown, polar and grizzly dancing, somersaulting and following each other down a slide, some forwards and some backwards.Even the polar bears, the largest of which weighs 1500 Ibs., are nimble on their feet. The bears are part of the 45 minute Safari Circus which takes place daily at 2 p.m.and 5 pm.The M.C,, Pierre Jean, is a well known francophone entertainer who has also acted as ringmaster at the Forum for the Shriners’ Circus.Geegee Engesser presents an act featuring six beautiful white ponies, and of course what would be a circus be without the elephants. The antics of the star of Pamela Rosaire’s Chimpanzee act, a somewhat hairy ballerina brings peels of laughter from the audience; and there is plenty of excitement to be found in Roger Zoppe's Indian and bareback riding show. There are two other shows wihch are performed twice daily during the week but three times a day on weekends.Professor Stu Miller and his Wonderful World of Magic leaves the audience mystified. His act features several animals and an escape routine reminiscent of Houdini.A very unusual attraction at Safari this summer is the Birds of Prey Show which gives the audience a rare opportunity to see a falcon catch a lure, and to witness free-flight demonstrations featuring a voung bald eagle, an owl See PARC Page?Getting into the fair spirit last Saturday were Lila Deschambeault and Shirley Halley both of ‘ Chateauguay.Shirley found that she had to carry her hat after the country air made her sprout flowers on her head.country living. Many visitors came from Montreal.Fair President Stanley Myatt says he prefers the complaints he’s been getting this year to those of last year.‘People say there was TOO MUCH going on; they couldn't see it all”, he said.Due to the success this year, Myatt says the Huntingdon Fair will remain a three-day event, with no going back to the four-day schedule Planning for the summer fair began last October.Myatt says the board was busy right through the year with two or three meetings a month during the fall.Although midway rides were not scheduled or advertised they became available at the last minute and created a bonus attraction.Bulow says it will be easier to schedule a midway next year.since this year's attendance was so high.Next year’s Fair will likely also see the return of Wayne Rostad whose music performances packed the tent on Saturday.Aside from the outside entertainers there was a great deal of local talent on exhibit and a true spirit of community togetherness throughout the weekend.Serving down-home meals were the Dewittville Women's Institute and a Chicken Barbecue by the Anglican Church. The opening day parade last Friday drew hundreds to line the streets of Huntingdon and witness the passing of bands, floats, antique cars, horses and this being an election year, political candidates.Other personalities in the parade included Miss Dominion of Canada, Terry Bailey; Fair President Stanley Myatt; and several local mayors, Gerald Brisebois, provided us a glimmer of hope for cleaning up the region's watercourses when farmers and villagers met at the August Council Meeting. The discussions were friendly and positive - no fighting, no hard words, no stomping off in anger.Farmers admitted their practices were responsible for a share of the lake pollution and shoreline owners agreed that closing the pumping * station was not a realistic solution as agricultural lands would be flooded. In this country where water cleanup has become a government priority and a much talked about subject in the press, the St.Anicet ¢ ase has set the ball rolling.Although other sources contribute to the lake pollution, some much more serious than the pumping station, the municipality has decided to set an example by dealing with its part of the problem. The environment has frequently been the concern of this column and is becoming more and more a concern of local government. The MRC Haut-St-Laurent is currently working toward the creation of a regional land use plan with such far- mer-villager, industry-resident, progress-tradition conflicts in mind. That plan is to be completed by April 1986 and will require input from anyone affected by land use - and that means everyone. The Gleaner will keep you informed as the mayors' environmental discussions continue. The Town of Huntingdon is also taking action.Council decided to take advantage of a Quebec offer to study waste water treatment and the mayor and councillors will attend a two-day seminar on watercourse clean-up.Citizen cooperation, regional planning, and municipal action - these are positive steps toward achieving a healthy and desirable place to live. Its good to see villagers, farmers, and government officials working together for compromise rather than raising fists and voices to defend their sides as has been the case in the past over land issues, As long as this continues, our MRC will set an important example for similar situations in Quebec and across Canada.P.N.100 years ago ST.LOUIS FACTORY BURNS The butter factory was burned on Monday morning, about 1 o'clock.Mr.Vachon’s son, being unwell, was awake, and heard a buggy drive to his father’s store. On looking out, he saw 2 men in a buckboard buggy nearly opposite the factory. One of the men jumped out, and the wagon drove a short distance and returned, when the man who had got out asked the other if he had seen anything, he answered no.The man who was standing, thereupon reached under the seat of the wagon and took out something, which he concealed under his coat, and went towards the factory. He came back in a few minutes and resumed his seat beside his companion in the buggy, which passed on, at a furious rate, towards Allan's Corners, Shortly after, young Vachon saw flames proceeding from the factory 350 years HOUSE BOUGHT FOR $75 It’s all right to complain about the depression when you really have been affected by it, but, even in these times, some people get an occasional break. Were we to start building a house we would at least require a few thousand dollars a hand to finance the construction.A man at Ormstown made rather a good deal on Saturday when he bought a house for $75.The building was complete and has been occupied for some years.Another house sold for $55, a barn for $18.It seems almost impossible that such ridiculous prices prevailed but these buildings were sold for cash by the municipality to make way for the new bridge, and, of course, must be moved.HOWICK FIRE A barn and contents to the value of and gave the alarm.Nothing could be done to save it, but part of the contents were got out, among them being 11 tubs of butter, being all that was on hand.CORN CROP A good deal of apprehension is beginning to be felt regarding the corn crop.Tho its growth has been luxuriant, it is backward for the season, and owing to the cool days and cooler nights of the past fortnight, the ears are forming very slowly. The general opinion is that, should we not have warm and sunshiny weather during the remainder of this month and an exemption from frost till the middle of next month, the corn crop will be this season, as it was last, substantially a failure. From the Canadian - Gleaner, Thursday, August 14, 1884 about $3000 suffered destruction in a fire a few miles below Howick early yesterday forenoon.Neighbors were.helping with threshing operations on the farm of Arthur Hebert, near the English River, Tuesday morning about 9 o'colck when fire broke out in the straw mow.Despite all the help at hand volunteer fighters were unable to gain control of the_ flames and the barn, stables, and any crop were entirely destroyed.Due to the proximity of the buildings to the road all traffic was held up for about three-quarters of an hour.Motorists rushed to the scene and removed all the furniture from the house to safety. From The Huntingdon Gleaner, Wednesday, August 14, 1934 SMILE MerukEs | reok LAST TANUARY JT Ryan ON A HOT Fire Protection Agreement between the Village and the Township Councils, In another related matter, the two Councils recently received letters from the Volunteer Firemen, assuring them that, in spite of some suggestions which had been made to the contrary, they are willing to continue -operating the ambulance service. There is, however, some discussion under way about forming a new Ambulance Committee, separate from the Fire Department. This would allow qualified people to volunteer for the Ambulance Service even though they may not necessarily be part of the Volunteer Fire Department.Tenders requested have been from three different companies for street repairs, and the village will soon be calling for tenders on snow removal. Please note that the Village Office will be closed on August 17, and that the next regular Council meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 5 at 7 p.m, because of the Federal Election which will take place on the Tuesday.Expenses approved for payment amounted to $9,800.A special meeting took place on August 9 between the Fire Committees of the Township and the Village, Mayors Fortin and Patenaude, and the members of the St.Bernard Council.Under discussion was the continuing fire protection offered to St.Bernard by the Hemmingford Fire Department.Although St.Bernard is presently building up its own fire department, it is still in the preliminary stages, and its volunteers are hoping to reach an agreement whereby they can work in co-operation with Hem- mingford, under the direction of Chief Gaetan Fortin, in order to gain the experience which they need Howick joins watercourse cleaning program Howick Village will ask the Quebec Environment Department to join the 1984 Program to clean up watercourses.Such was the decision taken by the Village Council at its regular meeting of Monday, Aug.6.Mayor Roma Myre and the secretary-treasurer were authorized to forward the request and were asked to keep council posted on future developments.Council arrived at its decision in view of the following considerations: Davignon Park by Mable Smith Visitors from Nottingham, England.Alan and Linda Walton and family, Village Council il was rather warm on council meeting night last August 6 as Havelock mayor and councillors had traded jacket and tie for open-necked shirts with short sleeves. The evening in fact was so warm and humid that only two citizens had the stamina to attend this monthly meeting which, in spite of it all, lasted its usual two and a half hours, In spite of the heat then, council discussed fire prevention and the possibility of making smoke detectors mandatory in every Havelock residence, A similar bylaw, already passed in many Quebec municipalities, in Hem- mingford for example, carries fines of from $20 to $200 or a one-month prison term for disobediant citizens. The project was put aside for further study. The councillors however approved the purchase of a smoke detector and safety lights for the town hall itself Citizens' complaints Council heard complaints from two taxpayers.First Stan Morin said he was ready to sue the council for not protecting his rights as a citizen. It seems Morin lives next to a collector of Elgin buys At its regular meeting of Monday, August 6, Elgin council decided to buy 300 yards of sand from Russell Carrigan, to be used on the roads during winter. The council was happy to receive the news that the “Société historique du Québec” has officially declared the Percv Bridee in Powerscourt to be an historical monument.A list of repairs needed to restore the bridge will be sent by council to this society which, it is hoped, will find the necessary funds.Notice of motion Councillor James Gaw presented a notice of motion that, at a future meeting, he will move that an addition be made to the public nuisance by-law, to include offensive noise after 11 p.m.on the basis that this noise prevents people from sleeping and is therefore a health hazard. The council was disappointed to hear that the grant from the Quebec Transport Department will be cut from five to two thousand dollars.‘‘We won't be able to do much these planes on his lot.The plaintiff finds it disagreeable to look at this scrap and wants council to stop his neighbor from putting it there. After a lot of discussion, council decided to authorize permanently the presence of the two planes but will ask that the spare parts be kept a maximum of three weeks only on the collector's land.Besides council doesn’t believe that this situation provides grounds for suing. The second complaint brought to council was about a new resident on Route 202 who has six or seven neglected and agressive dogs who bark constantly. As some of the councillors had noticed the problem themselves, they were quick in agreeing to send the municipal inspector pay a visit on the premises. The mayor took the occasion to note that Havelock has no policy with regards to dogs and that maybe it would be a good idea to restrict the number of animals per household to two. This will be an interesting item to follow up.To convention Council approved delegating their mayor to Quebec City next October for a convention of all Quebec municipalities. It will cost around $400 to cover Mayor Garault's expenses. It would have cost $600 per councillor if any of them had been interested to attend the convention.PROTESTANT REGIONAL SCHOOL BOARD OF CHATEAUGUAY VALLEY NOTICE TO PARENTS SCHOOL OPENING - AUGUST 1984 ELEMENTARY - ORMSTOWN SCHOOL BOARD Jean-Guy Hudon du Parti Progressiste Conservateur et de Jean-Guy Gaudreau du Parti Libéral du Canada. They were participants in the Anglican Summer Day Camp which took place from July 30 to August 3, when members of a travelling team sponsored by the Crosstalk Ministeries of Montreal stopped off in the community to organize and lead a week-long camp. From day one, the children fell in love with “lamb” a charming and very sheepish puppet who is an integral member of the team.Lamb served a very important function at the Vacation Bible School, The children could easily identify with the puppet who enjoyed having a good time as much as they did.The puppet is just one part of a carefully divised programme which incorporates games, songs and crafts with Bible studies and devotions, and encourages the children to think and act upon the moral and religious lessons which they have learned. This year’s theme was entitled ‘‘Luke Street” for several area children over the past few years. It is an interdenominational project which involves members of the various denominations which promote the camp, organize refreshments, billet the
