was sanding Highway 203 up to the Covey Hill Customs in a Regional Construction truck. When he began to descend the grade in the northward direction he realized that the brakes were not slowing him.He attempted to downshift but the weight of the load had the truck already at too high a speed and it became stuck in neutral with nothing to hold it back.Residents at the crossroads of Route 203 and Covey Hill Road saw the truck zoom through the intersection without stopping but figured it was simply a ‘‘crary driver.” “T was coming too fast to do anvthine ’’ bottom of the hill so he watched for a safe place to crash.“T knew something was going to happen,” he said “I might be killed.” In a patch of the woods where there is only small 60 hours, one-half of which (.88 inch) came as freezing rain.He then tallied the precipitation from earlier in the month (12mm of rain) plus 21 mm of snow (equivalent to 32mm of rain) bringing an the origin of the material used for the invention - if an employee has worked on it at home, it's worth more.Management also looks at what an idea can do for production, for quality and for safety.Ideas to increase safety for example can bring up to $400 to their authors. The management of Zephyr Inc.hopes that the example of Richer, Deschambault and Pelchat will be followed by many more employees. No specific date has been set yet for the next awarding of prizes to the best ideas but this is something the company wants very much to continue, said Jean- Pierre Tremblay.THE GLEANER — DECEMBER 21 1983 — 3 BAMBOO BAR HUNTINGDON .COMING EVENTS THURSDAY, FRIDAY, DEC.22, 23 ROCK ‘N ROLL WITH “ONE WAY” L new YEARS EVE PARTY SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31 OPEN BAR - COLD BUFFET $ 5 PARTY FAVORS ETC.2 © EACH FOR JANUARY COUNTRY MUSIC AT IT'S BEST “THE COUNTRY FOUR” FEATURING TINA WEST FROM ALL OF US AT THE BAMBOO BAR M PIONEER Lest Wishes or a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year FURNITURE — ELECTRONICS TEL: 264-3028 24 MGR.DAVID RS) is Pr HUNTINGDON M) PIONEER UALITY rs ea dE La 4 — THE GLEANER — DECEMBER 21 1983 ( Editorial HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE Christmas, ‘‘that wonderful time of the year” as the song goes, is upon us once more with its array of bright lights, warm greetings, happy sounds and friendly feelings.Probably most everyone would agree that Christmas couldn't come at a better time.We feel that we need a holiday right now, as dreary December days get shorter and shorter, until we reach the shortest day of the year, December 22.This will be the winter solstice, the time when the sun is at its greatest southern declination. That's the day our part of the planet will get the least sunshine. These long hours of darkness seem to have an effect on people.History reveals that even before the birth of Jesus, the period of the year coinciding with the winter solstice was already a time for feasting and rejoicing. As if afraid of the unusally long nights, men at that time celebrated with huge bonfires and wild bacchanalia. It is generally admitted today that the actual date of the birth of Jesus may not have been December 25 but that the first @ From Gleaner UT @ Christians chose that date because it coincided with pagan feasts related to the winter solstice. In that way, they transformed a pagan celebration into a Christian one.Today, we don’t have bonfires and bacchanalia like our pagan ancestors did but our Christmas decorations lighting up the night may well be a throw-back to ancient times while some office Christmas parties leave nothing to be envied by the Roman times bacchanalia. It can be seen then that the desire to celebrate at this time of year goes back a long way and is influenced by the celestial body which is the source of all life on this earth - the sun.The religious feast of Christmas reminding us of the birth of Jesus is no.doubt an improvement and an enrichment over the pagan celebration of the winter solstice but it nevertheless appeals to very ancient customs embedded into our collective subconscience. On this profound note, let us leave you with a heartfelt wish: Have a happy winter solstice, everyone! CANARD CONFUSES COURT A quacking good time was had in Valleyfield Court last week when a prime witness committed a social indiscretion in the courtroom then followed up by chasing the court stenographer. The witness was a duck involved in the case of a Montreal man charged with a game law violation. The R.C.M.P.claimed the duck - apparently a domesticated fowl was being used as a decoy on the Beauharnois Canal by the defen- dent. The defence lawyer, referring to the bird as a ‘canard sauvage’ tried to make Game Warden Guy Stowell of Dundee admit tame ducks can be found flying in wild flocks.“Domesticated ducks can’t fly,” Stowell informed the lawyer, ‘their wings are clipped." Probably found its way into the flock from a nearby farm, said the lawyer in an attempt to recover lost ground.“What farms?’ queried the game warden.- “Well”, said the lawyer, maybe it swam up the Beauharnois Canal. It was a laughter-spotted trial. The heat and excitement adversely affected Mr.Duck, who took the occasion to display his lack of toilet training in a court room faux pas.A stenographer who ventured too close to the clipped wing oiseau fled shreiking when she thought she was being attacked. The duck’s role in the trial remained a mystery to some of his fellow witnesses.Dr.J.S.Gaw of Huntingdon had been called in to give a veterinary's opinion on the bird's state of health: “One man swore he shot it in the air.His friend swore it was shot on the water.I swore it wasn’t shot at all.” The accused had already pleaded guilty to a charge of shooting a Great Blue Heron when the duck was carted into the room via a box.By the time the trial ended, the bird had not only left its box, but taken over the court. The judge ordered the bird removed from the box to determine if it was still alive. The box was upended and out hopped the duck.Definitely alive.Startled by the sudden appearance of an angry duck, the court stenogrpaher backed away. The duck followed, Rattled, the stenographer broke for the door, screaming. Before his courtroom collapsed in hysteria, the judge ordered the game law violator to return in January for sentencing.Valley churches to hold Christmas services The Churches of the Valley will be holding special Christmas and New Year's services at the following times, and urge all Valley residents to participate in these.ANGLICAN Dec.24- 2:30 p.m.Trinity Havelock Holy Communion; 8:00 p.m.St.James' Ormstown Holy Communion; 9:00 p.m.St.Thomas Noyan Holy Communion; 11:00 p.m.St.John's Huntingdon Holy Communion; 11:30 p.m.St.Luke's Hemmingford Holy Communion.Dec.25 -
