Minister Camille Laurin gets to implementing his reorganization of Quebec schools, the clearer become its devastating effects on school boards, the keystone of the present system. The proposal to eliminate elected boards and reduce their toothless successors to a standard size would remove the only element - other than the government itself - with the expert resources and mandate to direct a progressive, responsive school system. That, along with doubts that the local school can really become the “pivot” of education Dr.Laurin foresees, warrants stubborn opposition to changes that are not only unnecessary, but undesirable. The provision for linguistic boards on Montreal Island and perhaps in Laval and on the South Shore is certainly welcome as a means of guaranteeing anglophones primary control of their own school system. But these boards would suffer from the same weakness as all the other new boards. They would not be elected; and would not be strong enough to perform as dynamic, independent forces. The Laurin plan for- example, calls for five English boards on Montreal Island to serve students now in Protestant and Catholic schools. These five boards would be roughly equal in size, with about 30 schools and 15,000 pupils each, “ the ‘‘norms’’ the minister sees for all boards in the province. But instead of directly elected commissioners, the boards would be composed primarily of representatives of the school councils, elected by parents at each school.Instead of a Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal or a Montreal Catholic School Commission with a full range of research and other resources, the boards would be little more than warehouses for books and garages for buses, ‘‘service co-operatives for the schools’’ as the minister says.Other boards would also lose much of their capacity to remain in the forefront of education and influence policy. It was the South Shore Protestant Regional Board, for example, that initiated French immersion in St.Lambert schools, pioneering that method of second language teaching in North America.True, the board only acted after a long, determined campaign by parents. But it did act.Could Dr.Laurin’s service co-ops do as much. The government could surely reform the school system without turning it upside down. There is a need for linguistic boards and for directly elected boards large enough to do their jobs. There is absolutely no need for changes that would neutralize the leadership forces in the front line of education. This editorial first appeared in the Montreal Gazette.@From Gleaner files @D 100 years ago.(from The Canadian Gleaner of Thursday, Sept.21, 1882) THE QUEEN vs, SELLAR Tuesday last, at Montreal, the grand jury brought in a ‘“true bill’ for libel against Mr.Robt.Sellar, editor and proprietor of the Canadian Gleaner, a journal widely circulated in this District, and which leads public opinion in the County of Huntingdon, where it is published. It will not yet be forgotten that during the last election the Gleaner gave a strong support to Mr.Scriver, who was elected over Mr.Davidson by a majority of 618.Mr.Davidson, who had been sent to the slaughter, put forth all his energies in the contest, and called to his assistance the Star, a weather-cock sort of journal published in Montreal, and which only circulates among that class of readers who prefer sensational news. The Star was sent into the County of Huntingdon by the bagful.but the Gleaner and its candidate overcame these obstacles and won an easy victory.Mr.Graham, editor of the Star, who is moreover not over-scrupulous in the editing of his paper, took offense at a certain article published by the Gleaner during the electoral campaign, and has just laid a complaint against Mr.Sellar, who will have to stand his trial at Montreal.FARMING OF THE FUTURE?Ostrich rearing is the coming new industry in the States. The opinion is expressed by the American consular representative at Buenos Ayres that the business could be made profitable, especially in the Southern and South-western States, and California. It is very probable that before long ostrich culture will positive business in the United States and so we may expect very shortly to have ostrich shows, and to find the Struthio camelus make his appearance at agricultural fairs among the prize poultry.50 years ago.(from The Huntingdon Gleaner of Wednesday, Sept.21, 1932) NEW POST OFFICE .For a long time Huntingdon has lacked transportation in the Chateauguay Valley, ! offer some of my personal sentiments on the matter.During the past few decades, we have become accustomed to having a wide range of public services provided for us by the ‘‘Great Provider’, the federal, provincial and local governments.Unfortunately, it seems that we have reached the point where the “Great Provider” has run out of money.| tend to believe that in fact, the money was never available, so it was borrowed and hence the rather substantial national and provincial debts.Yet many of us continue to seek suhsidized services. The time has come to offer public services to the public at cost price. If a fare from Huntingdon to Montreal costs $10 or $15 to break even, then that is what the fare should be.If there are no patrons of the service at the break-even price, then the service should be discontinued Why should I be forced to subsidize bus service in Montreal, and why should Montrealers besubjected to subsidize the bus service here or anywhere else for that matter?Let's all pull our own weight and pay our own way.The sooner that we do just that, the easier it’s going to be.The era of the “free ride” is over.Gerald Beaudoin St-Chrysostome Reasoning inconsistent behind street re-naming I refer to the report of the September meeting of the Huntingdon Town Council, at which meeting it was mentioned that corrections will be made to names of several streets. We realize, with the language laws enforced in the province that we must accept French translations. However, it is also reported that the names of Lorne and Somerville Sts.‘are to be changed because they refer to individuals who are still living.” I fail to understand this reasoning. We have streets named Pilon, Brisebois, Lalonde, Poirier, etc.Have I missed some obituary notices or are these persons still living?Come, gentlemen, give us another reason why it is considered necessary to change the names of Lorne and Somerville if you can, but at least be honest about it.Name with-held by request Huntingdon Somerville St.has name by history justified The Gleaner of September 15, 1982 contained an article which states that the Town of Huntingdon should change the names of some streets. One of these, UPA.Newsline Beef farmers should take note that a meeting of English-speaking beef producers will take place on October 4 at the Orm- stown Curling Club at 8:15 p.m.Guests will be on nd to speak on both pro and con points of the proposed joint plan for beef producers. The importance of this meeting and other similar ones cannot be stressed enough. How can any farmer be informed and protect his interests if he does not take the time and effort to find out what is going on” All of us are very good at complaining about laws and policies that we don’t like.after they are in force. These meetings give the men they affect an opportunity to speak before this happens. It isn't enough that the UPA executive know about the proposed plans «though they are doing their best to represent all farmers in the area) - members at large must take an active and vocal part in what is happening.Do it now, it affects vour livelihood and vour future.Delegates to the Fall Congress (October 7 and 19) are reminded that a preparatory meeting for them will be held prior to the congress - directors will be in touch with them Somerville St, does not refer to an individual who is still living. The following should clarify how the street was named and why the name should be retained.Huntingdon County was created a Parliamentary Representative District in 1853.During the period between that date and 1867.Huntingdon was represented in the Assembly by Robert Brown Somerville.Huntingdon Village was incorporated on October 9, 1848, and in November of the same vear, Robert B.Somerville.Robert Cor- bett, William Graham, John Morrison, William Marshall, Archie Patterson, and John Somer- ville were elected to the Village Council.Robert Somerville was chosen Mayor.Years afterwards Somerville Street was named in his memory. It seems only fitting that the first Mayor of the Town of Huntingdon and the first member of Parliament for the District should have a street in the Town named after him.He has long since passed away! -hometown faces week to have with us at the Legion Hall Wendy Kell and her mother Maggie Davis. With the capable assistance of Marjorie Minchinton, they put on a 45 minute program of music and poetry readings. It is obvious that Maggie's talents are not confined to music as she is an excellent and expressive reader of poetry.Thank you all very much for adding so much to the Centre's day. This afternoon Jessie Amy will once again teach a group another of her interesting craft ideas. This time it will be stained glass using a method which is simple and in particular safe for use in large groups or when space is limited. It is not necessary for you to bring any materials with you for the first lesson but the cost will be $1 per class. As the number taking part must be limited, please see me before entering the group. It will begin at 1 p.m.On Sunday, Oct.17 the Centre will be hosting a concert put on the by the Montreal Welsh Choir, exceptional group composed of some 25 male singers. It will be held in the Legion Hall at 2 p.m.and you are invited to come and bring a friend. In early October the Kitchen band will begin its fall season of out-of-town concerts. If you wish to attend any of them or want to learn more about the band’s schedule, please see me.We always like to travel with a full bus to help ease the financial burden, and to have some Rockburn Diane Farquhar Kenny and Carol Erskine have returned home after spending several weeks in Western Canada on their honeymoon. The folks will move into their new home on the First Concession. They bought the home of Mrs.Mabel Mc- Cracken.Good luck and much happiness is extended to them both as they begin married life.Gleaner ads reach people See the John Deere 2800 Plow with exclusive hydraulic steering. We’ve got them ready to deliver by Buff Wilson in our audiences.Birthday people received our best wishes last week. They were: Hazel Bolduc, Betty Couture, Irene Patenaude, Edith Vine and Erma Wallace.Anniversary congratulations went to Ross and Eula Dunn who recently had their 46th anniversary and to Alice and Edmond Leger who have just celebrated their 52nd year of marriage. Our best to each one of you.We are still in need of a driver from the Ormstown area to transport four members on a regular basis from that town. Please do not hesitate to call even if you are able to manage on a part-time basis as these people would appreciate getting to the Centre even occasionally.Remember that our annual fund-raising event, the Bazaar, is coming up in late October and that we will need your crafts, baking, plants, white elephant items and your time as the date approaches.Paper bags and boxes suitable for baked goods will also be required but please, don't bring them to the Legion until the week before the sale Pour la municipalité de St-Anicet, le projet de création du parc historique Jules Léger est devenu une priorité.
