any jobs or directorships which he may hold: and loans over $2,000 which he has taken out with individuals or institutions other than financial institutions. In accordance with the law, Mayor Gerald Brisebois and the six Huntingdon aldermen gave their statements at the September meeting, held one 116th YEAR on municipal, HUNTINGDON, Que.Wednesday, September 10, 1980.18 pages 30 cents day later than usual because of the Labor Day holiday.Mayor Brisebois listed his two jobs, as a local retailer and secretary of provincial elections; and that he owns a share of four properties in Huntingdon and two lots in St-Anicet.Alderman Claude Bourassa declared his only job is that of florist, and that his financial interests include only one company, Huntingdon Florist.See COUNCIL page 2 Police report robbery rash Huntingdon Town Police have been kept busy lately with an out-break of robberies and break-ins.During the night of August 29 Huntingdon police received an anonymous phone call from a woman informing them of a possible break-in in progress at the C & S Auto Store on Bouchette Street.Arriving at the scene, police chased three individuals in a Chevelle Malibu. In front of the residence of Lawrence Brown at 104 Wellington St., the suspected robbers abandoned their vehicle, continuing their escape on foot. The three suspects got away but police recovered the stolen goods, valued at approximately $1,000 in the abandoned car.In addition, damages of $300 were caused to the garage of Lawrence Brown when the car, left in gear, collided with the building. The car, which did not have any registration plates, is now in police custody but the owner of the vehicle has been identified police said.A 17 year-old youth was picked up by Huntingdon police and his file turned over Adult Ed to the director of the Youth Protection Department in Longueuil after he was implicated in a car theft and a property damage offence. With the help of the local detachment of the Provincial Police, Huntingdon police apprehended the youth in the early morning hours of Sept.3.The young man had emptied the contents of a ‘fire extinguisher on the floor of Factory 5 of Cleyn and Tinker on the Athelstan Road.Leaving the building, he took a car belonging to Joseph Brethour of Trout River, the security guard at Cleyn and Tinker. On the same night of Sept.3 police reported damages of -$300 on the premises of Ford dealer Roch Trépanier on the Ridge Road in Huntingdon.A four by seven foot plateglass window was broken when an individual threw a block of cement through it.A ten-speed bicycle belonging to Gaston Bouchard of Parent St.and reported stolen on the night of Sept.1 or Sept.2 was recovered by the municipal police.A minor has been implicated in this incident and was detained by the police.program offers wide choice The lights are on again at night in Valley schools as Adult Education re-opens its doors for another year of continuing education.Next week registration will take place in adult education centres throughout the Valley and already the office in Ormstown has been swamped with calls in response to the brochures which local residents received in the mail.Programs this year offer a great variety in choice of interest; from stovemaking technology to bartending; there is something for everyone, c Adult Education centres are administered by a Centre Assistant in each locale and these women keep the schools at night hopping with groups of adults moving gracefully through a jazz ballet class, or perhaps enjoying an animated exchange in a class studying a second language.Residents throughout the Valley have known for a long time the value of following a course of interest or upgrading; programs have nearly doubled in recent years. With input from local citizens, courses are designed to reflect the needs and interests of that community and teachers are usually drawn from the same community. You might meet your neighbor leading a class in pottery, a skill you didn't even know she held. You can find out more about adult education and its related services by contacting the Centre Assistant in your community, or by phoning the office ‘at 829-3272.For a complete program being offered, look for the full page advertisement in this week's Gleaner. This fall, why not try your hand at a craft or skill, Adult Education is life-long learning, LEANER THE LEADING ADVERTISING MEDIUM IN THE CHATEAUGUAY VALLEY OURTIER MARILYN PARTRIDGE We'll help make it easy A.E.LEPAGE i] EN IMMEUBLE 15 King St., Huntingdon 264-4798 109th Havelock Fair coming up Saturday The biggest little fair in the Valley is all set for Saturday at Havelock, and if traditions hold, it should be a beautiful fall day.The 109th annual Havelock Fair will include all the traditional features which give it its inimitable flavor, even more special because it last just the one day. After that, the grounds beside Rte.202 will return to rustic peace, with another 364 days to wait until they blossom forth again. The theme of mass participation which is so much a part of the fair will be strengthened this year by a new Tug-o-war event for teams and individuals who choose to register with Norval Blair at the show ring following th P.A.announcement.And the log- sawing contest, an innovation last year, will continue for the would-be woodsmen.*‘One remarkable feature is the rapid growth of our goat show from its enthusiastic beginnings last year to an even bigger competition this year,” Fair Secretary Mrs.Ghislaine Slater told The Gleaner this week.Judge will be Martine Gadbois of Vaudreuil, a well-known Quebec goat expert.Another featured attraction at Havelock is always the splendid display of vegetables, handicrafts, and fall flowers, and this year will be no exception according to LC STOP for Terry Fox, says the sign, and Colin Stringer [Centre] of Boyd Settlement did just that on Saturday.Serving lemonade were Crista Brooks [left]; And at C.V.R., four students have set a goal of $1,000 to be raised among students for the Terry Fox fund, an average of about $1 per student.“At the same time, we're issuing a challenge to other schools anywhere to raise as much or more,” said Beth Thouin. While they hope to collect the $1,000 this week, Beth and Sandra and Susan Taunton and Mitzi Monette hope that the school will continue to contribute to the Cancer Society on a monthly basis from funds collected through various school projects.J Mrs.Slater.“Entries are coming in really well, with a tendency for individuals to enter many different classes, increasing the variety or crops and crafts on view,” she said.Une should always go hungry to Havelock, because there are so many good things to eat, centring around the mid-day meal catered by the Hinchinbrooke Volunteer Fire Department, with assistance from around the community.Dinner organizer Mrs.Stanley Myatt told The Gleaner that the menu of roast beef and ham, with homemade pies and all the trimmings, will be offered unchanged this year, and, (will wonders never cease), at the same prices as last year.Any pies and other goodies left over from the dinner, which runs from 10:45 a.m.well into the afternoon, will be sold off at the canteen. And there's never a shortage of customers.Last year an estimated 1,100 people enjoyed the meal, served by about 60 volunteers. The annual district Red-and- White (Ayrshire) show will highlight the dairy cattle exhibit, and there will be beef cattle, light and heavy horses, swine, poultry divisions to attract the livestock fancier.Judging starts at 11 a.m.Arena Project gets go-ahead The Arena Committee of the Huntingdon Regional Arena will go ahead with its project to build new dressing rooms with showers on the east side of the building. The mayors of Huntingdon, Hinchinbrooke God- manchester, Dundee, Ste- Barbe and St-Anicet, six of the seven municipalities which make use of the arena, met with the Arena Committee last Wed.Sept.3 to give their approval to the project.Elgin is the only member municipality which has not sanctioned it as of this week. The work on the dressing rooms, which was to have begun in August, will commence immediately. The project is expected to cost in the neighbourhood of $40,000, with each municipality paying its share according to population. The contract for the project has been given to the local firm of Jean Latreille Construction with committee members Cyrille Riendeau David Brisebois and Jean- Claude Taillefer supervising the work. The cost of the new dressing rooms and of replacing the floor at the garage entrance will be reflected in the increase of the hourly ice rental br will be $70 instead of The delay in the start of the construction may postpone the opening of the Arena scheduled for Sept.22, although manager, Mrs.Palmyre Lefebvre would like to avoid this.Minor Hockey will also have to face higher costs with an incease of $5 per hour, putting the hourly rate at $45 instead of $40.On the recommendation of Mrs.Lefebvre there will be free skating on two nights this year, Saturdays and Wednesdays. The charge will be $1 for everyone over 16 with the new hours to be announced once the schedule for the 1980- 81 season has been completed.Cyrille Riendeau, alderman in charge of recreation for the town of Huntingdon, has replaced Dundee councillor Justin Nieuwenhof as representative on the Arena Committee.Liberals will name candidate Sunday, Oct.5 is the date on which the Huntingdon County Liberal Association will select the party candidate for the next provincial election. The meeting will be held at Lac des Pins, St-Antoine- Abbé, starting at 2 pm.So far, only MNA Claude Dubois has announced his intention of seeking the nomination.Meanwhile, at a September 5 meeting, the Association named Lionel Demers to chair the party's fund-raising campaign in the riding.Demers, who has held the same position twice before, replaces Mrs.Thérèse Galipeau of Huntingdon who .last week announced she was stepping down from the chairmanship for personal reasons.CVR student drop smaller than expected With enrolment holding at just under 1,100 students, the outlook at Chateauguay Valley Regional High School seems more optimistic than it was in June 1980.According to principal Lloyd Adamson, several teachers declared surplus at the end of last year are now back at CVR.Two teachers have been transferred from Howard S.Billings High School in Chateauguay as well.Elaine Lahache is the new addition to the Phys Ed department.Elaine taught two years at Billings in Chateauguay.Originally from Chateauguay, Elaine now lives in Caughnawaga. She graduated with a degree in Physical Education from McGill University in 1978.This year at CVR, Elaine will be teaching Phys Ed to grades 7 to 11 as well as teaching one grade 7 social studies and 3 remedial classes.“This is my first time teaching something other than phys ed, so it should be an interesting experience ‘for me,” said Elaine.LA New to the Short Voc department is Dave Liebman, also a former teacher at Billings.Dave grew up in Montreal but for the past five years he has lived in Chateauguaym A graduate of McGill, Dave intends to finish his Master s thesis in teaching history this year.Dave, who will be teaching’ Math and English, finds the pace pleasantly slower at CVR.“It's a nice change, more easy-going than at Billings,” said Dave.ELAINE LAHACHE 2 — THE GLEANER — SEPTEMBER 10 1950 heard of include Florent Ricard and Fred Hutchings of Huntingdon, both of whom finished the gruelling course; and CVR students Robbie Tannahill of Ormstown and Darrell Ling of Howick.Congratulations to all, and to any others we may have missed.TODAY - through Saturday farmers and anyone else who is interested can attend the Sol-0-Rama at Mac- .donald College, which features the provincial and national plowing matches. The full schedule of events is given in last week's issue of La Terre de Chez Nous.IN ORMSTOWN - the annual Canadian Red Cross fund- ‘raising campaign will run from September 15 to 30 this year in the Village and parish.Expect a visit from a neighbor collecting for this worthy cause. And a few more canvassers would be welcome, says organizer Doreen Gruer.Anyone Clarenceville Mis.Elsie Derick Douglas Hislop and treated to an exciting demonstration of sky diving.Only minutes into the first class competition, all activity came to a halt due to the formation of an immense cloud of dust. The wind blew the dust towards the spectators making it impossible for them to see the track and impairing the drivers’ vision also. The problem was quickly remedied by the Hun- tingdon Volunteer Fire Department who sprayed the track causing the dust to settle.Three classes were held offering first prize of $125, second prize $75, and third Provost of St-Chrysostome program.Beginning this morning at 10 a.m.with the first Kitchen Band rehearsal of the fall, other activities will start during the day.At 1 p.m.near the stage, we will hold our first rhythmics plusieurs aspects mercredi soir dernier.
