of the United Textile Workers of America, want a two year agreement rather than the three year contract offered by the company.Total number of employees involved is about 185.The conciliator\u2019s Chateauguay - Valley with meetings in Huntingdon, Ormstown Howick, and Ste-Martine.Stik another was scheduled fur Tuesday night in #em- mingford, as the counrgown to referendum day éntered its last week.Most of these assemblies followed the same format, with locaï vrganizers sharing the platform with invited guests from provincial and federal politics, all of whom listed the advantages of federalism and the possible pitfalls of separation.The Ste.Martine gathering, which attracted a packed house of some 350 people to the Sacré-Coeur School on Sunday afternoon, also offered a symbolic ceremony on behalf of the No group of Huntingdon Riding - the \u201cpassing of the flags\u201d from the older to the younger generation under the theme \u2018\u201cLes Bâtisseurs\u201d (the Gleaner editorial ON FUTURE AT STAKE The future of Québec - and perhaps all of Canada - will be at stake next week.We are being called upon in the May 20 referendum to vote on whether we want to undo all the great work of the Fathers of Confederation.For despite the confusion of the hallot question and the millions of words spoken or written on both sides, the decision we must make is a very simple one.Do we want to destroy Canada and all that it stands for?The answer for all of us who are so proud to be both Quebecers and Canadians is of course No.The debate will go on for a few days yet, with both sides hashing over the arguments and repeating the claims and counterclaims.But we firmly believe most people have decided to vote against separation.The polls, for what they are worth, reinforce this belief.There is no doubt that here in the Valley the No forces will sweep to a resounding victory.But we can't afford to be complacent; every single vote will count in the overall tally.To stay at home on election day would be a slap in the face for Canada and for Québec.It is important to keep in mind, also, that a big No majority in this region could well counteract a close Yes vote in other districts and thus ensure the unit forces sweep to victory.For Valley observers two facets stand out amid the campaign turmoil.The first is the outstanding support for the No side in this region.The object of some grumbling earlier, the No committee finally caught fire.It now has the \u2018active backing of almost every mayor in the county, of many municipal councillors, of professional people, farmers, housewives, businessmen and _ many others, and of Francophones \u2014\u2014 and Anglophones in large numbers.The other outstanding feature of the campiagn has been the growth and effectiveness of Claude Ryan as No committee leader.In the beginning that astute politician, René Lévesque, ran awqy from him, making Ryan at times look awkard and unprofessional.Lévesque played to the media, while Ryan plugged away at what he called his grass roots campaign.It turned out that Ryan was right, and the person-to-persqn appeal paid off.He has worked tirelessly, and as we can now see, effectively.He has enhanced his position as Liberal Leader, and enhanced his chances of defeating the Parti Québecois in the provincial election which must come not long after the referendum.It\u2019s getting rather late in the day to go into detail about the merits of the Yes or No appeals.One point does bear repeating, though.If we opt for sovereignty association, we are voting for separation.Even if we give the PQ a mandate to negotiate, they have nobody to negotiate association with.The federal and provincial governments have all said they would not parley with a separated Québec.On the other hand, if we vote No all of Canada has expressed willingness to discuss renewed federalism with a better deal and an even brighter future for our province.Canada is a great nation with a proud heritage and immense possibilities for every one of its citizens.Québec and her people have contributed much to that heritage.The day the nation was broken up would be a sad one for all of us, and a disastrous one for Québec.Let's make sure that day never comes.\u2014\u2014\u2014 builders).Guest speaker at this meeting was former Quebec Liberal Premier Robert Bourassa, who gave a 20 minute speech informing his audience of the financial impact of separation.He referred to the James Bay hydro-electric project, now being highly touted by the PQ government, reminding listeners that the project had been conceived and begun under the Liberals.At its inception, he said, the PQ had referred to it as \u201ca white elephant\u201d but now they were only too happy to take only was it difficult for the visitor to choose from among the multiplicity of attractions at last Thursday's CVR Open House, it was also hard to work one\u2019s way through the crowds to get there once the choice was made, The school parking lot was jammed to capacity with cars and halls were clogged with parents, friends, and pupils ¢ome to view a distillation of the year\u2019s activities.They were not disappointed.For CVR students in particular, the evening also marked the culmination of the year-long competition among four intramural \u2018houses\u2019.Academics, in fact, it was nothing more than an idea three people shared.We contacted the Huntingdon CLSC for information.In general the CLSC exists in order to help individuals and projects in the community.After an evaluation by a team of workers they offered resources, such as meeting space, paper, phoiocopying and other material and technical assistance.They ako provided us with advice.Kaleidoscope was fortunate to have the advice and support of CLSC resource person Elizabeth Kater from the beginning.Elizabeth was able to put us in touch with other people, some of whom had previously attempted to start a daycare in Hun- tingdon and others who were then working on a project in Hemmingford.Through the information we received, we were both encouraged and discouraged: encouraged in that there was already an existing interest, along with a real need and discouraged at the difficulties these groups had met, not least of which was figuring out a reasonable budget.Another diff ulty was the attitudes of people towards daycare.Remarks such as \u201cA woman should stay home with her kids, instead of wasting money on some day care\u2019\u2019 were not rare, even in these days of the \u201cliberated woman\u201d.There was also a fear amongst parents that their children will not be well looked after, that among so many other youngsters their needs might be ingored.From the beginning we have viewed daycare as a necessary service to working parents, a right that should be accessible to all women and a very positive alternative to home child care.This view has been formed from personal experience, research and from visiting existing daycares.One of the most impressive experiences we had was a visit to a center in Malgne, N.Y.This daycare showed us that not only were the children safe and sound, but they were obviously loved.&nd well cared for.We could see first-hand what a good daycare could do for children, in terms of aiding their physical and intellectual development, as well as encouraging creativity and social interaction.It was clear to us that daycare centers should be designed with a knowledge of child development, and be child-oriented.Knowing this, our next step was to formulate a questionnaire by which we could ascertain the needs, the interests and the ideas of the community.With the aid of the CLSC and a modified version of a questionnaire which the Hemmingford group had developed, we began a survey in the whole of the Huntingdon region, sending out over 3,0000 questionnaires.Future articles will deal with the continued developnient of the Hun- tingdon project.Swine breeding method explained A group of about 12 swine producers from the Hun- tingdon-Ormstown area attended a one day seminar at Macdonald College Saturday May 3 on the artificial insemination of swine.Jim Mahone, Assistant Professor of Animal Sciences at the College led the course, the main focus being techniques required to collect semen from a boar and artifically inseminate sows.Although artificial insemination of cattle has.been in the area for some time, the same procedure for swine is new to Valley farmers.Peter Finlayson of Orm- stown, who breeds hogs for market and took part in the seminar, felt that the class was very informative but not really applicable to farmers in this area.\u201cFarmers interested in breeding hogs for market would benefit more from an insemination service like the one established for the cattie and dairy industry, rather than carrying out themselves the procedure that was explained to us at the seminar,\u201d said Finlayson.He feels that an insemination center would provide higher quality boars something that the average farmer could not afford himself.However if farmers could subscribe to a center that would ship the semen to them, they could then inseminate their own sows.There is one such center in Ontario but they have yet to figure out all the snags in shipping fresh or frozen semen, Finlayson said.St-Chrysostome auction offers livestock, antiques, and fun by JOHN A.VIAU Something that might be of interest to local farmers is a new livestock auction near the village of St.Chrysostome, called the Encan le flat du St.Chrysostome.Situated about a mile from the village on the road to Havelock, it is in operation every Monday Night starting at 8 p.m.The livestock auction is run in conjunction with a furniture and entique auction in an adjoining building.The livestock are auctioned by Danny Smith of Chateauguay and André Poissant of Ormstown holds forth in the adjoining hall.Here are some of the prices from a recent sale: cows - 62 cents a 1b.; Méme si nous donnons au gouvernement péquiste un mandat pour négocier la souveraineté-association, ce qui est tout ce qu'il a le droit de faire selon le libellé de la question référendaire, il n\u2019y a personne pour négocier cette association.Les gouvernements fédéral et provinciaux ont tous dit qu'ils ne parlementeraient pas avec un Québec séparé.-D'un autre côté, si nous votons NON, tout le Canada a exprimé sa bonne volonté de discuter avec nous d'un fédéralisme renouvelé, avec un meilleur partage et un avenir plus brillant pour notre province.- Le Canada est une grande nation avec un fier héritage et d'immenses possibilités pour tous et chacun de ses citoyens.Le Québec, et son peuple, ont beaucoup contribué à cet héritage.- Le jour qui verrait cette nation se désunir, en serait un triste pour nous tous, et un encore plus désastreux pour le Québec.- Assurons -
