wild winter gales and blowing snow that closed schools, kept people at home and isolated many communities on Mondav.Schools remained closed through Tuesday but as the winds decreased snowplow crews were out in force at dawn.By mid-day most roads and certainly all the main ones were back in use.The trouble was not the amount of snow but the manner in which it drifted in places and packed hard across isolated stretches of roads where the wind had full sweep.Carnival Queen crowned by JUDY TAYLOR of The Gleaner Queen Sylvie Lepage is a busy girl this week, presiding over the activities of the Ormstown Winter Carnival.The Carnival, wind-blown, snowy, but still very much alive, will continue through next Sunday with a series of parties, card games and activities for the youngsters.It all began well on Saturday evening, as some 300 people braved the snow drifts to attend the gala opening dance and coronation at Chez Meo on the Dumas Range.The choice of Queen Sylvie, made through a complicated combination of chance and success at selling raffle tickets, was a popular one, with lots of applause left over for runners-up Lucie Bolduc, Johanne Thomas and Kathleen Boisvert.Bonhomme on hand Also attending all the events is this year\u2019s Bonhomme Carnaval, Bob Greig, cheerfully stuffed into the white suit and giant grinning head.\u201cI think the guys who did this before were a little smaller,\u201d he said before Sunday night's Canadien supper, attended by about 175 people despite the weather.This was a real family event, with tiny tots and grandparents tucking into a substantial meal of meatballs, baked beans, salads and doughnuts at Notre Dame School.The next night, the weather finally caught up with the Carnival, forcing the cancellation of the giant Bingo at the same school.Much to come As of Tuesday, with schools still closed, inhabitants were busy digging themselves out and preparing for Wednesday's scheduled activities at the various schools.The Tuesday night party at the Cheyenne Snowmobile Club was still on too.On Wendesday, the two French and one English elementary schools were to enjoy a free midday meal, sponsored by the Ormstown
