[" Fi 3 2 he hE mite Committee of the City Council holds a mid-holiday meeting this afternoon, at which the principal question to be discussed is the situation in connection with the abattoir matter.This question, which has been gradually developing for a period of years, appears to have reached an acute criss and to be at a point where the Grand Trunk ad Canadian Pacific railways have joined issue in a bitter fight for the control of the big cattle trade and slaughtering business, which for some time, it has been foreseen, would centre in Montreal.It will be remembered that during lest winter ‘the old Union Abattoir Company suddenly developed a desire to come to a satisfactory agreement with” the city.For years things between the city and the company had been muddled.The company had bought both of the pablio abattoirs from the city and eu to have secured, a mon o opol of the slaughtering business for ball consumption within the city.The west end abattoir, or the greater part of it was burned, and difficulties arose about rebuilding.The city held heavy on the property and held the insurance money on the desiroved puildings as security.Affairs had been badly up, and it was hard to bring the company to an agreement.AH at once the company developed 2 ‘everish desire to come an agreemen! ee city, was not a bit backward, conferences were held and ters of a cettle- ment were agreed upon under which the city was to hand over the insurance money on consideratio of the company building a new up-to-date abattoir at Point "St.Charles adjacent to the Mon:- real Stock Yards.A notarial deed was drawn up and signed on behalf of toe city by the Mayor and city.derk.The nt was considered as effected, and about the City Hall 1be Gand Trunk got the credit for it, Shortly after this matter had passed through the various stages in the Gy Hall some surprise was caused by the announcement in the ‘Witnese’ ‘that the Canadian Pacific Railway hed secured + controlling interest in the Union des Im] Jt.was at.once.said that it.hay, | found that the; Mr.Wm.Mann, and Messrs.Hays, McGuigan, Loud, Moise and Pullen, the five last Grand Trunk officials.Mr.ras I Tait, superintendent of the C.P.R., is the ruling epirit on the board of the Union des Abattoirs Company.The city- has notified the Montreal Stock Yards Company that its building juspector’s permits cannot be con- sirued as giving the company right to operate abattoirs in violation of the agreement between the Sa Abattoir Company, but the Stock Yards Company .is proceeding with its work of construction, scores of men being: at work on- the ground, and several car.Toads of material “having been deliver-.rhe great.interest taken by both rail- ‘ways mn this matter is due to the be! lief of the railway community that Montreal i destined to be a great cen: tre of the he.dead meat and packing industry, Chicago packers baying made enquiries lately as to freight fac ities.to Montreal, factory ‘eîtes, etc.It is alee to She chemical ‘ cold drag.on- Those connected “with the eatile and od over the situation, ea;
