but the cpinion seems general that the manner in which it has been pushed forward is bighly creditable, and the building, so far as it has gone, gives evidence of being a credit to the Board and to the Dominion, There wus a good deal of joking on the Board whea sundry tubs of bottles in ice were carried past the members into the council chambers this morning, and sundry remarks as to the relative merits of champagne and Scotch whiskey came into the conversation.Voices were not wanting to take a more serious view of the presence of the champagne, and one voice, with the Scotch burr developed markedly, remarked: ‘That is a decided mistake—temptation should not be placed before our young men by the Board of Trade’ In general, howeve., these preparations were taken with broad smiles.and with a wink.They were indoor preparations, after all.Outside preparations were almost nil, confined to the erection of a platform to accommodate the members of the Board of Trade.There was not a sign to denote the nationality of the members—no flag of empire, and the bright sun adorned only the enterprising merchants of the city and warmed and cheered them in face of the somewhat chill breeze.The corner-stone was to be laid on the northeast wing, so to speak, resting on St.Sacrament street.; Just at noon the president, Mr.Alex.McFee, accompanied by the Rev.Dr.James: Barclay, of St.Paul's Church, the latter in his university cap and gown, | led the way from the Board of Trade rooms the platform, followed by Mayor Cochrane and the council and members of the Board.Among those were Mr.W.J.B.Patterson, of Texas, son of the veteran secretary of the Board cf Trade, long since deceased, but spoken: of even at this day as one who achieved por ithnelt fond Who de de the’ Montreal Board of idm of commercial ta nT Lime + y friends, | He was warmly greeted by m and so was Mr.William Henderson, of Victoria, B.C., who was present.There was not ‘wanting remarks among the members of comparison with the laying of the corner stone of the first-build- ing, destroyed ‘by fire last year, when Lord Strathcona performed the function, and when Montreal's ladies fajr were gathered in a bright and indeed pretty group picture to listen to the speeches, His Honor Judge Curran’s was one of the chief voices then.There was then flaunting from every place the flags of Great.Britain and -of the Dominion.There was pleasure and piquancy in the air—and a wave of ‘enthusiasm every .patriotic utterance.- Sombre indeed the picture would have been to-day but for the gift of the glorious sunshine.‘Where is the meteor flag?‘Oh, it is not the flag—it is the preference see want,” was the laughing answer.Setting D pleasaritry aside, however, the scene of ‘which the above.gives an idea shows that the democratic idea could Gowen to the round Bnet, wn e ve dy seemed delighted, frond.that matters were as satisfactory as they found them.and the natural brightnes ef the day made up for everything.ol THE PRESIDENT’ ADDRESS.It was a quarter Past twelve when Mr.Alexander McFee, president of the Board of Trade, attended by the: member of the |- council and invited guests; reached the olatform.Mr.McFee at once æddressed those present as follows: Members of the Board of Trade and Gentlemen ;— This’ occasion - takes our thoughts to a similar ceremony which took place May 19, 1892, exactly ten years ago, when the corner-stone o our former “building, which waé destroyed - by fire on Jan.> 1901, was id .by Lord Strathcona.I- feel sure that voice the sentiments of many of .those present, when I say it would Have been a great pleasure to have had that nlus- tricus Canadian perform this céremony to-day, so that his name, which 1s among the foremost of ‘the empire builders of the nineteenth century, might be associated with this building also, - The Montreal Board of Trade was incorporated sixty years.ago;
