eoutd, cast, and west, is in town, Souss’s march music snd operss have had a great vogue, as.is well known, and he has been assigned a place next to Sirauss and Sullivan.‘How do you meet the charge that your music is trifling and frivolous, and that those who are afiected by it, have their taste for classicism vitiated?Nall, do-1- vequire to mest the charge at all?” asked Mr.Souss, at the Windsor Hotel, to-day.‘I do not think I need defend my music at this time of day.I heard on St.Catherine street this morning a boy whistle “Stars and Stripes.” He had no patriotic reason to do so.He liked to do so.The .nusic had taken posses sion of him.Sometimes at my concerts or at the production of my operas you ivill find a creature in long hair and green goggles who lamente that it is not ‘Beethoven’s ninth symphony or Tristram and Isolde, but when he goes home “El Capitan” or “Den Juan” is coursing through his brain.He eays he can’t But that is my best compliment.” ‘We Americans are a little timid, I em in earnest.We are like a child that dreads going into a room in the dark, but once we are in we are not afraid of spooks.We have been doing something rather big in patien-making during the past year, and we are doing a little in the musical line, though we began in fear and trembling.My music must have been dormant in the breasts of the people, and it was my good fortune to give expression to what all felt.There was a power in this beyond me.I œil it an almighty power.My music is my religion.Certainly, when I am composing 1 am in another atmosphere.When I was in Naples I heard people in a boat playing ‘The Washington Post” as a waltz; when 1 was in Venice, I heard “Manhattan Beach,” and when General Miles attended the review me that my music has become hold word.i ‘To be frank,” said Mr.Sbusa, laughing, ‘I would fecl like ordering my coffin if I could not have the benefit of the carping critic.I would feel lost and neglected without him.He is my meat and drink.I do not defend my music, but I will say that I should like to make acquairitance with music which is truer to the laws of harmony, which has less banality about it, and which answers more completely to the purpose in view than that which I have been able to offer the public.’ ‘At the same time a man who is on a pedestal needs to be careful and modest.If he inflates himself he is lcet.The idol is never able to strike back, yon know, no matter what blows may be given him.My thought always is, both with regard to my band and my operas, to give the best.” 1 have a better band to-day than I ever had.I will have a still better next year.I do not know how to accomplish this, but I am after an ideal.With my reputation it has been said that 1 could make more money with a cheaper organization.I do not want to lean upon the publié.I desire to give them the best.I have the most expensive organization in the world to-day.With regard to my comic operas, I have been fortunate in this respect that I have made a success in several works, and not in one only, as js frequently the case.This music meets the needs of the public.It expresses what was in the mind.It enswets to thoughts and feelings which ave not found expression.This is its bent" CRICKET.MONTREAL V8.OTTAWA.This annual mateh was played Yesterday in Ottawa.The weather was pe was Gilbert unfortupate -in losing the pr the home: team _goipg to the wicket, which, by the way, plsyed exceedingly well, and riieected great credit on Turton, the Ottawa Clubs ground man.Brisbane and Bell started for Ottawa and played very steady cricket.Unfortunately shortly after the commencement, Bell strained his leg so that he had to bave A men to run’ for him.This was followed soon after by another casualty, Duckit being the.victim.After bowling four overs he had to desist, having strained his side.This was-a severe Llow to the visitors as in the absence of Bayes, the bowling department was weak.Bristow after setthng down hit merrily and things were looking gloomy for the visitors when Bristowe.-yas unfortunately run out, the bit baving been stopped by Gilbert.This catastrophe soon le smaller disasters as Belt, Campbell and Ackland soon succumbed.Bouchier hit with great vim, and it was a plessure to see.this old player return to cricket.Hutchinson hit bard but had a fair share of luck In compiling his runs, Pattee carrying his bat for 13.Arblaster's bowling for Montreal was far ahead of that of his confrere's, and it is a wonder that he has not been put in oftener.There were a few catches missed, which if taken would have materially leseened the score.Montreal’s batting was of a disappointing character.Gilbert was the victim of à megni- ficent left-hand catch by Turton and Ar- blaster when playing well was foolishly run out.Browning was a brilliant oxcep- tion, for he batted in first-class form and raised the hopes of his side,but was eventually bowled for 27, compiled by really good cricket.Walters stayed a short time, but played too tamely, stili he made 13 before being well caught by Bristowe.In Montgomery, Ottawa turned out a new bowler, who, if a trifie erratic, is still useful to the side.Ferrable batted very carefully carrying out his bat with the total of 84, leaving the Otawa team victorious.The game was continued for a short time for the benefit of the spectators, but as usual in this sort of an arrangement not much cricket was played.the only noticeable features bein the hitting of Bristowe, who was misse three times, and an extraordinary ‘catch made by Southam.Thus finished another annual match between the, two clubs, and in all the years they have met in friendly rivalry, not one has been more enjoyable, and it is no wonder that the Montreal players look forward to thelr annual visit to Ottawa.The score follows: Ottawa—Pirst Innings.M.Bristowe, run out .39 B.T.A.Bell, b Arblaster D.C.Campbell, ¢ Henderso son .H.Bouchier, b "Henderson .H.Ackland, b Arblaster .E.Turton, b Arblaster.V.Steele, b Arblaster .- FE — Gilimore,- € Brewning, b Gilbert LoL 12 Montgoinery, ¢ Johnston, b Gilbert .6 + (F-utchinson, c Henderson, b Arblas- .'b Hender- .17 Pattee, mot out ….LL a 2 0 13 Byes eee ee ea ee ean 8 Leg byes .2.22 24 41 04 oo ee 2 .;
