occurred early this morning to members of the army fiy- ing corps, when Lieut C.M.Belling- ton and Lieut.E.Hotchkiss, both of whom had just been given a commission on probation, were killed while flying past Wolvercote.The machine in which the officers were manoeuvring had passed over Oxford and had reached a point just outside Wolvercote, when the motor appeared to stop and the aeroplane fell Gibson's office, is reported to have informed counsel for the Austrian Consul, that Mrs.Szabo brought letters from her brother to Gibson's office which gave the information that Mrs Menschik was Moderator, the Rev.J.M.McAllister.‘ After the minutes of Previous meetings had been submitted by:the clerk, the Rev.James Patfersen, and approved by the court;.-the' moderator called upon the Rev.W.R.Cruick- shank to read the report of the Board of Home Missions.The report said that much good pers this morning refer terms to the success of the aviation corps.FILTHY CANS CONFISCATED As a result of a visit paid to the various railway tations of the city twenty summonses were sworn out by the city milk inspection department today against as many milk dealers for returning milk «cans unwashed to dairymen.Eighty such cans were found by the city inspectors, Sixty- nine dirty, old, dilapidated cans, unfit for carrying milk, were also seized.Some of these latter cans were on view in the food inspection office at A smell of one these cans revealed the fact that if contained some milk that was rotting.Practically all of the cans seized, it is believed, contained what is known as the poison bacteria, This gets mixed with fresh milk, and its effects are particularly disastrous on children, giving them intestinal troubles.These are quite prevalent, as shown by the returns of the health Cepart- ment for last week, which give intestinal diseases as the cause of 69 deaths out of 180 in the city.ROUTINE REVOLUTION Washington, Sept.10.—The revolution in Nicaragua is on the wane, according to advices from Rear Admiral Southerland to-day to the Navy Department.The Admiral: reported that the railway is now completely in the hands of the American fanding forces, and that the uprising had dwindled to the proportidng .of ‘the in glowing i work was being done in Reloeil, where the Canadian Explosives Company had accounted for a large increased population.The present mission was being carried on in a tent, but the company had passed plans for the erection of a fully equipped schoolhouse, and had granted leave to the church to make use of that building until permanent quarters could be erected.Much discussion centred round a request on the part of the committee asking the Presbytery to countenance an additional worker in Tetreauville district, which is situated near the Taylor and Maisonneuve churches.Mr.Hood had been asked by the committee to canvass the district with a view to discovering the necessities of the Presbyterian residents there.While Dr.Manson, the new pastor of Taylor Street Church, was , grateful for the work which Mr.Hood had done, he submitted that to ally a missionary in that district with the Mai- sonneuve church was to encroach upon the field over which his church ought to have jurisdiction.The Pres LACE OF FUNDS FOR HOME MISSION WORE APPALLING of Jurisdiction of Taylor and Maisonneuve Churches, and Decided to Extend Term of Moderators to a Year.bytery knew that the Taylor Church was having difficulty owing to the influx of French people into the district, and his session was inclined to resent the intrusion of another chureh into what they considered their own territory.The Rev.R.T.Ballantyne submitted that there was more than enough work for both chürches.‘ After a good deal of heat had been generated, Dr.Keliy in support of the Rev.Dr.Manson insisted that the money must be spent only after careful consideration, as the Home Mission work of the church was eminently the most important problem that was before the Presbytery.The lack of funds in view of the amount of work which was actually necessary was appalling.Dr.Gibson suggested that the two ministers should meet in consultation, and decide what limits if any it was necessary to lay down to their respective spheres of labor.The motion was ultimately passed ungpnimously.On a motion of the Rev.R.T.Cruickshank, it was decided that In the future the moderator would be appointed for one year instead of as formally for six months.The period of tenure of office was too short in view of the requirements which the moderator of the Presytery had to satisfy.It was further decided before the court adjourned for luncheon that they would.discard the old scheme of electing the moderator according to his turn on the Presbytery roll.In future they would make use of their statutory powers, and elect him regardless -of any other question than his ability.SUNDAY THEATRES London Actors and Actresses Pass Resolution running high in Ttaly regarding the ultimate disposition of the Aegean islands which have heen occupied by Italian troops in the war with Turkey.The agitation was initiated by delegates from the islands and by Greek emissaries, and is receiving the support of the Socialists and other extremists.The agitators maintain that it would be shameful and dishonorable if Italy selfishly concluded peace by giving up the Aegean islands to Turkey on the ground that Ttaly merely aimed at the possession of the Libya region of Africa.It is insistently and emphatically demanded that the ‘islands shall not be returned to Turkish brutality and revenge.’ The Italian government is urged to insure for the islands an autonomous government to which, it is asserted, they are entitled by ethical, racial and political reasons.Advances have been made to Ric- ciotti Garibaldi, the only surviving son of the Italian patriot, to organize and lead a body of ‘red shirt volunteers.’ similar always trying to grow and by its growth poisoning and endangering the life of the community on Which it Hves.This evil which acts Qn a community just as though it was a living enemy has to have its tentacles kept pruned down by those in authority as close as the general séntiment of the people will allow.A government or , executive which works on the opposite principle of allowing any evil tendency in the people &s great liberty as the- community will allow is an ally of vice.It is essential that governments and commissioners make themselves the advocates of those who are i ‘bondage to the liquor habit and to the poor families dependent on them, as these will assuredly not appear before them to plead their cause.— By electing’ a Democratic legislature | Jast ‘time the State of Maine came very near to losifig the prohibition law won for it by Neal Dow, and the honor of being the: State which has: longer them-amy other Been gontinu- olisly freé ¥rom the ‘open sale of liquor.In state elections Maine is ‘bound to one party for, its freedom from liquor, and cannot allow national questions.to intervene, however strong its sentiment with regard to them.placing the Democrats in power.This was done during a time of national dislike.to the course the Republican party was taking.Democratic effort to repeal prohibition the State should go back to its own party.Never since thé Civil War has Maine cast ‘a single electoral vote for other than a straight Republican candidate for the presidency.The normal majority of the Republican candidate over his Democratic opponent in the last ten elections for governor is about twenty-five thousand.Beside this figure the three or four thousand votes by which the Republicans have won the governorship this year look more like an evidence of weakness than of strength.When that moderate majority comes to be divided, as it certainly will, between’ Mr.Taft and Mr.Roosevelt, it.can hardly fall to leave a plurality in the State for Mr.Wilson.a SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES.Like Montreal and other rapidly growing communities, the town of Verdun has often been puzzled over the problem of providing adequate school accommodation.With a limited revenue and a population increasing by thousands every year, it has been practically impossibls to build schools fast enough to kéep pace with the demand.This fall the situation was crucial, but it has been met with a ‘promptitude that does credit to the Board authorities.Over four hundred pupils more than the schools could accommodate presented themselves for enrolment, and Mr.Geo.A.Ward, the secretary, immediately called the members of the board together.As a result of the.conferences, it was * decided, on Mr.Ward's suggestion, to appeal to the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches to permit the use of their Sunday-schools as class rooms until extensions to the Lasalle road school shall be.compléted.The response of the church suthorities was both prompt and gratifying, and now the continuous education of the youth of Verdun is assured.This form of co-operation between the School Beard and the churches is one that will be for the good of both, and other worried schoo! authorities might well seek to make like arrangements.Everywhere throughout Canada the log pchool house has been the Protestant church house of the pioneer.Everywhere it has been freely accorded without charge for religious services.The :secular school houses of the country have been the cradles of slmogt, all our Protestant communi-’ tips, and are at the, present: time the outposts of Protestantism ail along the commerce between the two peoples.| “supply of nitrates from Chili’ ran the alarmist despatch.The state- For one short term it took the risk of It is very natural’ ‘that after the suspénse caused by the energy and enterprise of the School | on — 7 = and subduing to his upe the forest and the prairie” {5 ‘Mantreal we had the.other day the complaint of a parent that for a second consecutive year he had been refused admission of his sgn to a school on the: ground that there was no room.The case is not unique.There is congestion” Worsé than that, this congestion is almost certain to increase.New ‘York, with its lavish expenditure, has not for years been able to build schools; but delay in track-laying is on abcount of erection of permanent bridges.The track should be at Al- dermere some time in.December, and we hope to have track sixty miles east of there, at what is known as the Bulkley Summit, in the early winter.This, like the east end, depends on common labor.Equipment, like steam shovels, engines, etc, is on the work sufficient to complete it by January 1st, but we should have 2,000 additional mien in order to, properly carry on constuction, and these seem very.difficult to obtain on the Coast.Returning we visited Victoria, spending two days there, then came east to Edmonton by the Canadian Pacific via Calgary, taking in the Grand Trunk l'acific between Edmonton and Winnipeg.All the country needs is a littie clear, dry weather, to allow harvest operations to proceed, giving the largest crop in the history of the country.Spent a couple of days in Winnipeg, then travelled over what is known as District ‘F.of the Transcontinental to Lake Superior Junction.and from there over the Company's Lake Superior Branch to Fort William.3 To The main lite’ of the Transcontinen-’ tal over this district to within six miles of Winnipeg is nearing completion.1 should ‘judge the entrance into Winnipeg ought to be completed about December 1st.At Fort William thé company have very largely increased their.yard accommodation for the handling of the grain traffic, having at the present time trackage at that point for 2,000 cars.The 2,500,- 000 bushel addition to the elevator is well under way, and should be ready to store grain the present season.From .Fort.William we travelled via the Canadian Pacific to North Bay.We teft the Canadiaæ-Pacifie, at; North Pay, ‘And hvelled ¥dver the Grand Trunk to Fort Erie and ‘Suspension Bridge, for the purpose of, looking over terminals at those points, especially at Fott Erie, where we hope to have additional facilities by the close of the geason sufficient to prevent congestion which occurred last winter.We have nothing in particular to say relative to newspaper articles which have appeared during our absence regarding .the desire of the Government that we lease District ‘Fy’ known as the McArtiur Contract.The Contract between the Government and the Grand Trunk Pacific relative to the Transcontinental Railway provides that on the completion of the line we shall take a fifty year lease.It also stipulates that pending the completion the company may, if they desire, take over any section which has been completed, but it 1s obvious that any unit of the line would hardly be very” profitable for the company to lease until the whole line is completed, or at least until they can get a direct connection with the Grand Trunk 8ys- tem and enjoy a through traffic.Tho question of leasing sections of the line when completed was brought up by by what is known as the ‘old’ Commission, and this company made the proposition at that time that we would take over any section of the Transcontinental which the Commission desired to have placed in operation, the Government taking the earnings and paying expenses; any profit or loss which might occur as a resuit of operation to go to Capital Account, i.e.if the operatien showed a profit, Capital Account would be reduced accordingly, and if it showed a Joss, Capital Account would be increased that amount.We have since renewed that offer to the present Commission, but have not received their reply to same.The Grand Trunk Pacific Officials feel that this is a fair solution, and will enable people located.along the line to secure the benefit of railway communication on a fair basis to the Government and the company.The statement which several newspapers of the country have made, that we did.not desire to lease the line as we would then come under the control of the Railway Board as to rates, etc.could mot have originated with the Commission, but in the imagination of the reporter.The Commission are well aware of the fact that our rates now between Fort William and Winnipeg are the same as those via the Canadian Pacific and Canadian Northern, and that tariffs were fllled with the Board of Rallway Commissioners.CADETS OFF HOME.Boys Pleased With the Good Times “ They Had in Toronto.Toronto, Sept.10.—Eighty-seven of the visiting cadets who have been at the Exhibition went west last night, three cars being attached to the Winnipeg train for their special use.They will visit Winnipeg, Calgary, Regina and Vancouver, after which -those from Great Britain will return east, while the Australian and New Zealand contingents will embark on a trans- Pacific steamer for their homes on Oct.4.Prior to the departure of the boys they were dined at the Walker House by the Exhibition authorities> In a short conversation before the train drew out, an Australian and a couple of New Zealanders told what they thought of Canada.‘We think it's great now,” said they.‘but we're glad we are going home before the winter” .None of the colonial contingent expressed a desire to stay here.‘Canada 5s a great country for à visit’ said they, ‘but there's no place like home for us.Same of the Old Country cadets, however, Showed symptoms of a ere or com again to live.100 coms back | .spoil a performance, rather add tc - ANOTHER QUAK: GIRL.The season haz scar «ci .: two Quaker girls have visite.in musical comedy 4nd Majesty's.Comparisons are, *- Le almost inevitable.But as of fact the two little Quakerres-.little in common, so One dos any means seem like a dupli is the other.Both are dainty.« .eva- pleasing in all their work.a- are fair to look upon, There :+- = larity ends.It is in Miss Le.Intyre that Montrealers are ‘ner: , this week.She is, as the - papers say, ‘in our midst,’ ang © .| | an enlivening influence.She si.si dances well, and her babyish ; one, i .Tre Rev.Father Garant, a Re-” demptorist priest, urged that the transportation of liquor into prohibition districts by express companies and others be prohibited.He opposed any repeal of the early.closing law, and advocated the stricter enforcement of the lw and heavier penalties for violation.Ald.L.A.Lapointe, secretary of the L.ensed Victuallers, was asked if he had any representations to make.He said he was not ready.Later he said he would present the chjections to his association to various clauses of the License Act.The adjournment of one month had Leen asked by Mr.Justice Lafontaine, president of the Ligue Anti-Aicoolique, who said that it was so soon after the holidays that his organization had not time to get together and agree on the ‘specific amendments they wanted to the License Act./ A decidedly interesting discussion took place .in the Court of Appeal trom before Their Lordships entered to resume the session of the committee.I began.when Ald, Lapointe arrived, and entered into 4 good-natured, jocular debate with ex-Ald.Carter and Mr.J.H, Roberts, president and secretary, respectively, of the Domimon At- lance.Gradually the talk became more serious and really argumentative.The secretary of the Lioe: 3 Victuallers asked what was the valus of all the representations made to the committée by the temperance pesple during the morning session.It: Was ail sentiment, he said, and every onë had a different point of view, and who was to decide what point of view.was the right one?Besides, people would get liquor some way or another.You could not prevent them.If they couldn't get it they would drink methylated spirits, as happened here lazely, or.they would take tobacco and make tobacco julce and drink it.These and other stock arguments Against tem e Teform wers used hv Ald.Lapointe with great readiness, And the temperance men he addressed, an-wered just as readily.Finally ‘the Licensed Victuallers’ secretary teclared that out in the country in.prohibition districts he knew of cases where liquor was sold with the knowledge of the priests.This brought Abbe Desrosiers to his feet, and he launched vigorously into the discussion, and a warm debate en- sed heiween him and Ald.Lapointe.| Then another of the Licensed Vietual- = ES le 4 PHONES Your fine Linen Shirts and | Collsrs carefully laundered by experts in Our Mand Werk Department.Mark your parcel Handwork Department.~~ THE TROY LAUNDRY VERDUN ——— of white silk ribbon.Black AUTUMN MILLINERY.| How Ideas: at the Seasons Opening at Goodwin's.’ The millinery rooms of: dwins Limaited presented a busy scene yès- terday, on the occasion of the Autumn opening of new millinery.The large picture bat, it ia evident, 1s t6 be with us again, not carried to extremes, but large enough to accompany acefully the afternoon gowns for social affairs, while towaräs the other end of the scale aré maïy smart little hats designed to be ‘very comfortable for wear with the tailored costume.The large hats are inclined to flat in proportion to the breadth; Migration of Population, who ministered with much acceptance until his death took place in 1876.The.work had prospered by this time to such an extent that in 1876 the session of the Free Church in Cote street reported that the Nazareth Street Mission was the largest Presbyterian Sunday School in the city.‘After the de- ceasé of Mr.Elliot the regular church services wère given Up until the winter of 1878-79, when ‘services were conducted on Friday and Sunday evenings by members of the Y.M, C.A.For some winters thereafter the work centred in the Sunday School, but it bécame increasingly felt that for the success of the mission a regular missionary should be in charge.The session of Crescent Street Church, .therefore, decided in 1881 fhat the work should be taken over by the Congregational missionary, and it was taken over successively by Mr.(now the Rev.) J.A.Morrison, the Rev.Richard Hyde and Mr.(now the Rev.) John Mclaren, ‘The growing - nature of the work | caused another change to be made, and in .1886 it was agreed that two missionaries: should be ‘appointed for the work during the winter, '6ne of whom would carfy on the work In the summer months.‘Thé first two mission- arles so appointed were the Rev, J.H.MacVicar, -B.A., D.D., now of St.John, N.B., and the Rev.Robert Johnston, B.A., D.D,, now of the American This arrangement was Invariably carried out until 1910.Among the missionaries were the following well known ministers: The Rev.J.az son BA, BD3 of Ét.Gfiés* Church, Montréäl;
