Lieut.James A.Saunders, Erie; Chief Musician Morrison, and Drum_Major Christley, of Butter, were badly injured.Lieut.Kennedy reports that the Tenth Regiment is in fearful shape.He says that every surgeon who has seen the dead and injured blames the trouble on the leggings worn by the men.Chief Musician F.Leipold.of the Fifth United States Regulars, who came to Gettysburg this morning.says that four of the reported dead were mein- bers of the second brigade.He says that men are lying about uncenscious and that troopers with lanterns are gathering them up.STRAWS PICKED LOCK HOW SEVEN PRISONERS ESCAPED FROM TORONTO JAIL.t — Toronto, July 23—Six straws from an ordinary broom gave the seven pris oners from Toronto jail their liberty last Friday afternoon.At least that is what the investigation new proceeding at the jail shows.It appears that on the door leading to the death cell, from which they dug their way to freedom, is a ‘champion’ lock, of a peculiar variety, which may be sprung with straws from a broom.These straws were ipserted into the tumblers of the lock, and it at once sprung.In fact, the operation was an easy one for skilful men to perform.Orel OBITUARY — F.A.McCORD.Ottawa, July 23.—Mr.F.A.McCord, law clerk of the House of Commons, died suddenly to-night at his residence, 499 Wilbrod street.He was engaged at the time in some work on his own land, and his wife was the only person present.The late Frederick Augustus McCord was born in Aylmer, Que., in 1856, son of the late Hon.Thomas McCord.He was educated at St.Mary's College, Montreal, and Quebec High School, graduating with the degree of LL.B.at Laval in 1882.In 1884 he was called to the Quebec Bar, and in the same year was appointed to a clerkship in the Senate.He became assistant law clerk of the Commons in 1887, and law clerk in 1890.He was the author of ‘Errors in Canadian History’ and ‘A Handbook of Canadian Dates,” two valuable works.Only a week ago he was granted an increase of salary from $3,500 to $4,000 in recognition of his services.He married in 1885, Harline, daughter of Mr.Justice Wurtele, of Montreal, who survives him.Sister St.Thomas Aquinas, of the Ursuline Convent, Quebec, is a sister of deceased.—— THOMAS HEYDEN.Port Hope, Ont., July 23.—Port Hope's oldest business man, Thomas Heyden, plough manufacturer, died last night in his eighty-third year.He established himself here in 1851.His widow, to whom he was married fifty-one years ago last March, and five sons, John, Reginald and Sherwood, of Port Hope;
