Fortnieyer, secretary of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen.made ime ! mediately after Ten Eyck won the Henley championship, there belng much criticism (of the Worcester man, largely on account | of his professional afliliations. The executive committee of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen, it was said yesterday, wili undeuhtediy enter ino j any written agreement that the Henley i stewards desire. They are animated solely by the desire to keep the sport on true amateur lines, and if the Vesper crew crossed the Rulkicon of amateurism ii could oot, it is sald, be laid at the doors of the national orgarization, for the committee had the word of the Vesper Club, one of the oldest rowing organizations in the country, that its men were all right, and could not do otherwise than endorse them.C.A.A.U.AND THE STANLEY CUP CE GLASGOWS WILL BE PRO.Ë FESSIONALS IF THEY PLAY | WANDERERS.SAYS MR.i CROW.Toronto.Dec.20—The Maritime Province A.A.have wired Secretary Crow, of the C.A, A, U., enquiring the status of the Montreal Wanderer Hockey Club, rand asking whether, in the event of their competing for the Stanley cup, the New i Glasgow team would endanger their amateur status by plaving against the Wan- ( derers. The reply given was that the "Wanderers were professionals, and that [the New Glasgow team could not play i them without themselves being declared professionals, The C.A.A.U.will control the game of basketball, and look after the players, and also have a supervision Over the Canadian championships In the following sports, Skating, fencing, boxing.wrestling, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor athletics, and swimming. The skating championships will be held in Toron- ‘lo his winter, MUCH CRY—LITILE WOOL.JOURNED DISCUSSION OF GLASS MATTER TILL DEC.28.Last night's meeting of the Eastern Ca- padian Hockey League, called at the 1n- stance of the Montreal Club, was a fiasco. Many charges and counter-charges were made by the representatives present, and some of the comments thereon were more foreible than polite, After much dis cussion 1t was finally decided to adjourn the meeting until Dec.28, the amendments to the constitution made at the annual meeting being printed and dis tributed among the clubs of the league in the meantime. The case of ‘l’ud’ Glass, which was the ostensible cause of the meeting, was also postponed to the adjourned session.; The president, Mr.F.MeRobie, of the Victorias, was in the chair, and there were present at the npening of the meeting \\Messrs.Bramley (Montreal), Blair Russell (Victorias).James Strachan (Wanderers), and Emmett Quinn (Shamrocks), the secretary. After the meeting had been opened, Harry McLaughlin, of the Shambrocks, turned up, and was permitted to represent that club at the meeting.Ottawa and Quebec were not represented.; The Montreal representative opened the ball by stating bis club’s case against ‘Pud’ Glass, and based his right to call the meeting on a section of the by-laws which provides for the summoning ot a meeting to consider complaints against clubs and players. He read the agree ment made between himself and Frank Glass, in which the latter expressed the purpose of playing with the Montreal Club this seasou.and followed this by reading an extract from a letter address- eld to him by Glass.Mr.Strachan wanted the whole epistle read, and Mr.Bramley complied with the request. The letter stated that Glass had waited for some time for a direct confirmation from the Montreal Hockey Club of the agreement made with Mr.Brawley, and as this had not been forthcoming he (Glass) had signed a contract with another club. The statement of Mr.Bramley’s case brought from Mr.Strachan the reply that the arrangement with Glass was merely a personal agreement, and not a contract to play for the Montreal Hockey Club.Under the circumstances the agreement could not be considered binding.Xe this point Mr.McLaughlin wanted to know by what right the executive had made changes in the constitution without notice of motion having first been given.Mr.Bramley supported the speaker, and stated that the business had been done in an illegal manner, and that under the constitution it was not lawful to allow professionals to play in that league.Mr.Strachan questioned the regularity of Mr.Bramley’s move, but the chairman ruled it in order.Mr.McLaughlin took up the cudgels against contract-breakers, and followed up with an attack and questions on the charges that had been made. The minutes of the annual meeting were turned up, and the information required was given by the secretary. One of the most interesting episodes of the meeting followed after the Shamrock representative had continued to insist that the changes were illegal, This was an explanation by the president of what had happened at the caucus of club representatives, from which the press was excluded, held immediately prior to the annual meeting, ; At that private meeting, Mr.McRobie i said, it was stated that the elubs were go- jing to make provision for the playing of | professionals, and against thie the Vie- | torius protested. To retain their place | in the league, however.they were com- | pelled to agree. They wanted the league to remain amateur.but were forced into [the present position, | After a calm a breeze sprung up be- “tween Messrs, Strachan and Bramley. The former hinted that the Montreal agreement with (Glass must have been drawn up by a numskull, and, later on.stated that his great confidence in the acumen and ability of Mr.Bramley had been shaken. These remarks drew from Mr.Bram- ley a retort concerning the necessity of the Wanderers having to secure legal aid to draw up their contracts, to which Mr.Strachan naively replied, ‘Sour grapes.’ Mr.McLaughlin chipped into the discussion at this time, and stated that the Shamrocks were not professionals.Mr.Strachan intimated that he, too, knew something about the inside of Shamrock affairs. To this gentle insinuation Mr.MeLaughlin replied that any one who said that he had any facts against the Shamrocks did not speak the truth.Later on, in answer to a remark from the Wanderers’ president that his club had a binding contract.Mr.McLaughlin asserted that the Shamrocks, being the only corporate body in the league, were the only organization legally entitled to make contracts.Another calm—then a suggestion from Mr.Bramley that a reversion to the original state of affairs would be desirable. To this Mr.Strachan held out a threat that if the Wanderers were compelled to break the contracts already made with players the parties responsible for such a step would have to pay for it.Further.it was too late now to make a change. The Wanderers had ‘started the season, and bad made con: tracts, which could net be broken with the players.Things became breezv again, when Mr.E.C.H.L.MET LAST NIGHT.AD | Pen: 7 Merritt is at present in S:.Joba.ve ‘ | [od 1H CRM | - EH oo CALEDUNIA AHLAD PS ! —- OF he onion.ST LAWRENCE CURLERS ELEVEN “PROUR od fis {POINTS DOWN ON LAST NIGHT'S bute Pere - Sithapdies se 05 C0 | PLAY o dhe Caledenia curlers drew el ven poinis i ahead of the St.Luwrence Club on the able on th a ; is only a short distance off when aerial locomotion will be practical that several commissions are at work elaborating plans for meeting.in the various branches of the public service, the solution of any new problems which the revolut
will entail, Captain Ferber, of the ¥Irench Army, who is devoting all his time to acrostatics, and who conducted the negotiations on behalf.of his government with the Wright brothers, agrees with Santos Dumont that flying machines in a few years will be as common as automobiles to-day.In the next war he is convinced there will be battles between flotillas of airships.‘Human mastery of the air,’ said he to the Associated Press, ‘1s virtually achieved.None of the startling achievements of the past, neither stedm, electricity nor the telephone, can compare with what the future holds in store for vs.Not only will the life of individuals be revolutionized, but governmencs will be compelled to devise in almest every department, new methods to meet the changed conditions. This change will “ome with amazing suddenness and France is taking the precaution to meet it.In the customs service, present methods of watching the frontiers will be obsolete.Aerial patrols will be necessary to prevent the smuggling of contraband across the border. The police of all cities will have to be provided with flying machines in order to protect the people from the new opportunities of crime which aerial locomotion will place in the power of criminals. It would seem that flying machines would enable anarchists to achieve any end by threafs against not only rulers, but whole cities. With the police sailing about in the air it will be no more difficult to frustrate their plots than it is now on solid ground. In war the intelligence service will he entirely consigned to the aerostatic divisions and armed airships will guard the bivouacs of armies.’ ; Captain Ferber believes the solution of the problem of aerial uavigation lies m the auestion of equilibrium as the principle of flying, that is area of aeroplane surface and speed. He contends that the domination of the air at present enjoyed by birds was only obtained as a result of a slow process of evolution comparable in a way, to slow perfection of the present means of flight.etfs ZION CITY ESTATE RECEIVER DECLARES MANY OF THE CREDITORS TO BE IN ABSOLUTE FROM MANY LANDS.Europe, Asia, North and Central America Supply This Fruit to Canadians.CHRISTMAS TRADE HEAVY IN ALL LINES OF FRUIT.Wherever fruit is sold at this season of the year, oranges occupy a leading place, and this popular line of fruit receives particular attention from those who are interested in increasing the value and volume of their trade. The average consumer probably never gives a thought as to where his purchase was produced, and 1f some of the supplies of oranges in Montreal were traced back to tbe land of their growth, & surprisingly wide area of the earth’s surface would be represented.Callforuia is perhaps the largest shipper to this market, but there are also stocks in store to-day from Italy, Spain, Mexico, Florida, Jamaica and the Bahamas. It will be reen from the above list that Montreal dealers go far afleld for their sup- pees, but they do not seem to have taken up the Japanese fruit trade to anything like the extent of western merchants.Japanese oranges are favorites with Winnipeg dealers for the winter trade, and those who have san pled the fruit say that it is a delicious eating orange, though rather small in size. They come in boxes about the size of a smull tea-chest, and there are from 75 to 100 orauges in each package.Though large quantities of some, and considerable quantities of all varieties lave been delivered to tbis market, the stocks in the hands of the dealers are practically exhausted, and it is even reported thut orders have been turned down during the last day or two.Under the existing market conditions, prices are firm throughout the list.and those who have stock to cell are z dling from $5.25 to $3.50 per box for California navels; $3 to $3.25 for Floridas; $3.00 to 54 for Valenclas in 420 size, and § to $5.25 in 7-4 size.Lemons are in fair demand at $2 fo $3 per box as to quality.Pineapples are on the market, but the supplies are rather limiled.Fine, ripe fruit is quoted at $4 per case.Apples are rather quiet, as Is usual at this time of the year, but prices are steady; winter grades are selling at 35.50 to $4 for No.1, and $2.50 to $3 for No.2.No.1 grade Fameuse are quoted at 34 per barrel.Grape fruit is selling slowly at $3.50 to $4 per box.A very active Christmas trade in bananas is one of the features of the market, and the demand bas heen so good during the past few days that dealers estimato the volume of this year’s trade at double that of any preceding season.Quotations range from $1.65 to $2 per bunch, the latter price being asked for particularly fine and large fruit.; Other Ilnes that have been active this season are the evergreen, holly, holly- wreaths, etc., and »upplies were well cieared up by the middie of the week.UNITED STATES CROPS.Washington, Dec.21.-The Catelll, who had been calied to Ottawa, the second vice-president.| Mr.Isaie Prefontaine, was the spokesman, end presented the formal petition prepared by the council. This petition seta forth that the Chambre | de Commerce having realized the necessity | of a school such as the onc proposed, felt happy to find the same view embodied in the general programme of the presen! Que- bee Goverrment.Under those circum- rtances, the members were ready to place themselves at the disposal of the govern- went for the administration of such a school. The Chamber reckoned that the bulldiug and equipment would cost some $300,000, and its members, if given tue management, were disposed to contribute an annual sum of $5,000 for a period of forty years, and then become owners of the butlling. They would expect the Premier bimself to hold, In the institution, & position that would give him control. In reply, the Premier remarked that this wus probiblv the firs: time a public body had come to offer pecuntory help to the government, and he thapked the Chamber for such a move.On the other hand, they asked the management of the school, and he wanted to be fo a posttion, if such an arrangement was reached, to tell the pub- Ve tha: the contriluiion of ihe Chamber Justified the agreement.Could not the arnual subscription be nade larger, for it must not be forgotten that the runniig of the school would cost from tweaty to twenty-five thousand dollars a year.Again, would the government be expected to ron- tinue and subsidize the school after forty vears?Mr.Prefontaine replied that in offering $5,000, the Chamber was actually stretching | a point.and showing what importance | attached to the movement. As Tezards ! the future.he felt sure that ar the expiry of the forty years, the Chamber would be in a position to continue tbe school itself without outside help. The Premier then remarked that the government could certainly not succeed in such an enterprise without the help of some Influential body such as the Chambre de Commerce, but instead of placing the proposed school under the control of the Chamber, would it not be better to or- gaunize a separate composition.Again, some wealthy citizens might be induced to furnish generous contributions, and they would be appointed life directors. The Premier praised the zeal of Mr.Gervals and the Hom.Mr, Tarte for the promotion of the proposed school, and mentioned the services rendered by the press in the same connection, Mr.Prefontaine said that the Chambre de Commerce could never show too much gratitude towards the press for the inter- sst it had taken in the question of superioF commercial education.: Invited bv the Premier to say what he thought of the proposal, as presented, the Han, Mr.Tare said that be agreed with Mr.Gouin that the matter needed serious vonsideration. He could assure the Pre- miler that the people approved him and his, government in their efforts to promote va- tional education.| Mr.Honore Gervais expressed the opinion ! thot.by capitalizing the annual graat ot- | fered by the Cramber, the school could b» constructed at once and be ready for eccu- pation in October next, The fees pald by the pupils and a $10,000 government grant would be sufficient to mect the current ex- venses. The Hon.A.Destardins hoped that the Government would be very liberal for tho new enterprise. The Premier coucluded the interview by suggesting the appointment of a sub committee for further discussion with the Government, so that something practical ; might be proposed during the next session.RURAL SCHOOLS.DEPUTATION SAW CABINET MINISTERS ON DISTRIBUTION OF TAXES.A deputation from the Protestant comm.iiee of the Council of Public Instruction waited on Premier Gouin and the Hon.Messrs.Weir and Roy, Weduetday and laid before him several suggestions lonklng to the improvement of the eystem of primary education in rural schools. The delegation consisted o.the Rev.W.J.Shaw, D.D., president of the committee; Dr.Rexford, Dr.Robertson, Mr.C, H.Parmelee, M.P.H.M.P., i Roy, Ald.N.Le- 441 St We hav Long Glo or Suedes shades.Ladies’ Gloves, lined Phone Up.1068.PARIS KID GLOVE STORE XMAS GLOVES precisely the gift you seek, correct in style and of proper quality.Men's and Children’s Gloves lined or unlined. All gift gloves put up in dainty boxes.Perrin’s Cloves a specialty. No Branch Store.Catherine 8t., West.e a stock that contains ves, Mousquetaire, Glace in all lengths and all or unlined, from £1.00 up.Open Evenings.AERATED FOR THE HOLIDAYS GINGER ALE.CREAM SODA WATERS GINGER BEER.SPARKLING KOLA.SODA WATER.Tel.Main 1784.Raccoon Coats. Our "Coon (oats are well cut, skins weil matched and look elegant. Our values are 40 percent better than that which you get elsewhere.See them be- tore buying.CHAS.DESJARDINS & CIE., 485 to 491 St.Catherine street, East.Corner St.Timothy street.Tel.Bell: East 1536.1537 A FINE TURNOUT.One of Montreal's most enterprising bread bakers, Mr.James M.Aird, held @ parade of his various bread deliveries Lo- day. Some seventeen sleighs, drawn by twenty- one fine horses, ‘ormed the procession, the sieighs all being placarded by the names 0’ the vartous districts, which they serve, which practically covers all the districts and suburbs of Montreal and Lachine A unique feature of the parade was à sleigh drawn by three little ponies—the only ones of the their kind in Montreal. The turnout showed well for the great increase in Mr.Aird’s businese, which, by the way, was established 29 years ago this month.the rural schools gave each one a Very small portion, and was Dot very lauch encouragement to school boards whose revenues were very small. He believed |!
