Quebec, May 2.—Judging from all the paports cf the disaster at St.Alban so ‘ar to band, it is pretty evident that the cataclysm was entirely due to the undermining of the ground by water above the fa!ls, where the earth was thrown into the river and completely shut off the water, which was dammed back till a depth of seventv-five feet was reached. Then the river changed its course and washed away the earth for a mile and a half ing, and about a mile wide, and to a depth of one hundfed feet. There were seven houses carried away, and four lives ist, besides a great number of domestic animals.Mr.Gorrie, the proprietor of the buried mill, was in town yesterday god said that the newspaper reports, so far from exaggerating, fall short of the stupendous catastrophe. The whole region disturbed is fully two miles in length along the north shore of the river St.Anne, and extends more than three miles from it, covering an immediate area of over six square miles. The river has been effectually blocked and obliged to make a detour of at least threequarters of a mile from its former course, and does not regain its ancient bed for two miles down the old stream. The principal ; SCENE OF THE CATASTROPHE is eighteen miles from the nearest telegraph station, which accounts for the reason why news of the terrible calamity was not given sooner to the outside world.‘The spectacle presented by the afflicted locality is one of desolation.Where the Ct.Anne's river was once a mile wide, it is only a narrow stream, raging and surging in vain attempts to break its new bounds.Woods, houses, cattle, all are gone and nothing is left but barren ground for six miles back. Here and there the debris of the illfated farmhouses, barns and other outbuildings, are to be seen in little heaps tangled up with uprooted trees and carcases of dead cattle, but most of the wreckage has been swept into the river and carried long since into the St.Lawrence.For almost seven miles back, thz earth now has a gentle decline and is almost level with the river, whose bed has been ralsed at least sixty feet.An eye-witness of the disaster says that it was five o'clock in tha evening, when the banks which had been honeycombed for years by the water that had percolated through from the Laurontian mountains, caved in and with the hundreds ¢f tons of sand on top slid iv the river. The noise was terrific, but : «us followed by a sudden calm, for the roar of tte falls had been smothered. The groaind, however, kept on vibrating as from an earthquake and the farmers for ies around RUSHED OUT OF THEIR HOUSES Jr shelter which they did not know where : ud.After the first panic had some- v'at subsided they went back, but the river had slowly.risen, .and snow and ice, which are still pfentiful-Here, helped to strengthen its powef. The water rose and rose till for miles it covered evervthing. It was fully a hundred feet deep, when he earth began to move at first slowly, tien faster and finally so fast that those «nn were far back from the river and trad to run from it were thrown down.!l: is a wonder that no more human lives were lost. The ground near the river began to move first and the house nearest was that of the Gauthiers, which shared the fate of the pulp mill sent down by the firat break in the shore. The earth behind began to move next, going much faster, and soon overtook t firdt part f land and piled upon top of it, and so n till only a small portion of the river was left unobstructed and the high bluffs tad been transformed into a deep valley.he dumb animals were doomed. Not Lnowing what had happened they remain- -! Where they stood and were swiftly carried down into the raging river. The x-itement in the neighborhood was In- r-nse and the darkness added to the horror Not one of the local population slept that night, but anxiously awaited the dawn and it was then only that they r=alized rhe full extent of the catastrophe.Fighteen persons in all were VARRIED WAY BY THE SLIDING EARTH ai of these, all but the four members «! the Gauthier family were rescued alive.T"» subsequent death of Mr.P.Darveau, €:.* of the sufferers, has been since con- traicted, but his wife and the wife ot / seph Aud.are reported in a very criti- condition from the fright which they “lived. As for the Gauthier family, ‘@ 13 now no doubt whatever that they “te perished. The remains of their - -ise among the debris bas been searched .thout success for their bodies, which, "is now believed, have been carried away and will be found later on in the St.Lawrence.The case of the Gauthiers is a very sad one. Some say that Madame ‘Gauthier was seen going down to the river St.Anne, trying to save herself by run- ring away, but the velocity of the moving earth was too great. She was : arrled long with it and while crying out for help was drawn Into the wild maelstrom drowned, Another of the victims, ber brother-in-law, David Gauthier, had Tr some time previous to the catastrophe ‘ren very nervous, and especially afraid ‘hat something would happen to him.His vife, who was a lunatic, and for two years - inmate of Beauport Asylum, had died dy the week before and her death had : Unstrung him that he could not bear * br left alone. He was afraid to remain his own house and came to his bro- ‘T's dwelling for safety; he had often CINE the week expressed his bellef that vould net be tong before he joined his “7°.and his presentiment turned out to + Leen true. The case of the Darveau wily who were saved, is also an ex- z rdinary one. They were sitting down "der evening meal when THE FLEAT OMINOUS WARNINGS “ne coming disaster were heard, and “7 they arose in affright and threw selves on thair knees to pray. They 4° hardiy done this when a frightful - 5iNg were all completely wrecked with the exception of the Darveau house, which was carried bodily some ten or fifteen acres away and left almost intact.Yesterday this house was still standing amid the debris, but to-day it had been carried away by the angry river, which was also covered with an incredible quantity of floating timber, beams, furniture and the carcases of horses and horned cattle.ANOTHKR DIRASTER THREATENED.There is sald to be great danger of another terrible disaster at any moment. This morning, to the general surprise, the water in the St.Anne river was found to have fallen several feet, but when the trua cause of this sudden diminution of its volume was ascertained, alarm once roore took the place of joy among the local population. It was discovered that the river received to April 15.The Royalist party newspapers declared that Admiral Walker had come to take possession of Pearl Harbor and as soon as that was accomplished he would proceed to organize a new government. They even went so far as to say that Admiral Walker would restore Liliuokalani to the throne. The Provisional Government and annexation papers construed Admiral Walker's appointment and presence 0 mean that the United States Government had experienced a change of heart and that the assumption of control of Pearl Harbor set at rest all doubt as to ultimate annexation.‘Thus far Admiral Walker,’ says the ‘Sun’ correspondent, ‘has not made known what he intends to do in this country. There is a serious split in the Royalist party as too many desire to pose as leaders. They expect to receive information from their agents in the United States, by the next steamer as to the hopes of restoration. If this reply is in the negative the party wfl!l rush into politics and endeavor to have some of its members elected to the constitutional convention, with a material change in the oath of allegiance.Delegates from nearly all of the districts in the islands have been nominated and matters in connection with the constitutional convention are running smoothly. There is not the least excitement in the islands.— me HEAVY LIQUOR FINE.Toronto, May visit America this year and play for the championship of Newport. Those who are expected are William and Ernest Reushaw, the famous twin brothers known all over theŸ world for their skill at tennis, and C.W.Hilliard,- who is also ranked as one of the cleverest players in the world. All three of these men spent part of the winter in Cannes, in the south of France, where they played tennis a great deal.A number of American experts also visited the Riviera last winter and while at Cannes met ths celebrated Englishmen. It was while they were there that the plan was made and the foreigners decided to visit this country, and make the long threatened test of the sklll of our best players. This is not by any means the first time that the English players have promised to visit America. On several other occasions it was thought that everything was arranged and then the visitors at the last moment decided that they would not come. The chief drawback that the foreigners complain of is that the climate ig too severe. They also complain that our courts are not strictly first-class.YACHTING.THE ‘ FIGARO’ ON THE PRINCE OF WALES.Paris, May 2.—A special article in the encouragement from the presence of the Prince, who is in such thorough sympathy with our country. If the prince does not carry back all the prizes to England,’ à adds the ‘Figaro,’ ‘It is because, with a fecling of extreme delicacy, he did not wish to make a clean sweep of all the rewards offered to competitors.’ THE POINTE CLAIRE CLUB.The annual general meeting of the Polnte Claire Boating Club will be held in the M.A.A.A.rooms on Monday evening, May 7.MR.BENNETT ORDEES A YACHT.Mr.James Gordon Bennett has given an order to the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company for a to be of tobin Lronze and will be a centreboard craft. She is to cost $80,000 and one of the staunchest crafts afloat. The only stipulation Mr.Bennett makes is that she beat the ‘Vigilant.” What her dimensions will be is not yet known but she will be named the ‘Prunelle,’ and will be commanded by an American skipper and crew. The ‘Prunelie’ will be completed in the autumn.and will cross the ocean to be ready to race for the big prizes offered at the Cannes regatta. The purchase of the ‘Vigilant’ by the Goulds has undoubtedly given a great interest to international yachting, particularly as the ‘Vigilant’ is to go abroad and will doubtless race at Cannes. It has also aroused foreign yachtsmen, and what will undoubtedly be the greatest international yachting contests may be looked forward to next year in the Mediterranean. It is expected that at the Cannes regatta the Prince of Wales, Lord Dunraven, George and Howard Gould, James Gordon Bennett, Mms.Rothschild and Harry MacCalmont will have vachts, so that it will be a contest between England, France and America.THE VIGILANT PROGRAMME.New York, May 3.—It was learned yesterday that the Gould party will have as a yachting mentor, C.Oliver Iselin, the former head of the ‘Vigilant’ syndicate.Mr.Iselin, it is thought, will go abroad in June, and will be the guest of George Gould on the ‘Vigilant’ in all her races in foreign waters. It is sald there will be no challenge for the Royal yacht cup, and as far as possible the ‘Vigilant’ will be raced on outside courses.Lord Dunraven's ‘Valkyrie’ left for Cowes.Isle of Wight this morning.CRICKET.VICTORIA CRICKET CLUB.At a general meeting of the Victoria Cricket Club held on
