Set in the not-too-distant future, Klara and the Sun is a novel in six parts. In Parts One and Two, the reader meets Klara, a solar-powered AF (“arti?cial friend”) and Fourth Series B2.Klara is a companion robot for children; she is being sold at an AF store located in an unnamed big city, likely in Britain or the U.S.As well as Klara, who functions as both the narrator and protagonist of the story, the reader is also introduced to two other AFs who are for sale, Rex and Rosie. All robots, although humanoid, must be “programmed” and kept powered up by the sun.Although there are several different models of AF for sale here, it is clear that Klara is more perceptive than the others. While on display during her turn in the shop window, she bonds emotionally with a sweet but sickly fourteen-year-old shopper named Josie, who eventually returns to the store with her mother to purchase Klara.Although it takes some persuading on Josie’s part, ultimately Klara is bought and moves in with Josie and her mother. There she meets Josie’s best friend, Rick, a young drone inventor.Rick’s family is less af?uent than Josie’s, and as a result, he has not been “lifted” (which means he wasn’t genetically modi?ed as a child). The “lifted” kids see him as inferior, à la “Mean Girls”.We also learn that Josie had an older sister, Sal, who was also sick and eventually died.In Part Three and Part Four, the devoted Klara, who believes the Sun is god-like and can heal Josie’s illness, asks the Sun to do just that.Since another belief of Klara’s is that the Sun dislikes Pollution—because it blocks out the sun—she offers to destroy the Cootings Machine, a construction vehicle (which she has seen emit a lot of pollution) as a way of thanking the Sun for its help.Only partially successful in her task, Klara ?nds that the offending machine is quickly replaced by a new one.Meanwhile, Klara learns that Josie’s parents (Chrissy and Paul) are planning a “portrait” of Josie that is really a robot version of Josie! In fact, they want Klara to “learn” to be Josie so they can someday transport Klara’s consciousness into robot Josie, as a replacement for when Josie dies.In Part Five, Klara knows she has failed to stop Pollution, but she asks the Sun to heal Josie anyway. She believes that the Sun is a champion of true love (based on seeing it shine brightly on a day she watched two people being reunited), and she assures the Sun that Josie and Rick’s love is worth saving. We also learn that Josie’s sickness was a possible side effect of being genetically “lifted”, and her sister Sal likely died because of it.One dark day, as Rick shows great kindness to Josie’s mother even though she tends to be cruel to him, the Sun suddenly emerges and Josie, against all odds, starts getting better. In Part Six, the years have passed and Josie has healed and headed off to college. She has no more use for an AF, so Klara remains at home.Unsurprisingly, Josie and Rick have grown apart; since Rick was never “lifted” like Josie, this has set them on different trajectories. In what seems a typically human fate, Klara is eventually sent to the Yard (a place where old machinery is discarded). There, she spends the remainder of her days reviewing her memories in her head. Her feelings, indeed, her love for Josie, continue, and she seems to have no regrets about her lot in “life”.(Of course, she has never actually been alive, but has responded as more human than many humans we all know!) A particularly poignant scene occurs when Klara’s former store manager appears in the Yard.Always a favorite of the manager, Klara confesses that her goals in being Josie’s arti?cial friend were met, but now they have all moved on, and she has no regrets.A ?nal example of Klara’s deep love, despite being “arti?cial”, for Josie.Although there is great depth, elegance, and symbolism in Ishiguro’s work, it is very possible to enjoy his works on a more super?cial level. However, the more you know about the author the more you will appreciate his artistry and gentle approach to story-telling.(As an introduction, I highly recommend viewing the award- winning ?lm version of “The Remains of the Day” [1993]).Featuring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, this is an excellent introduction to Ishiguro’s effectiveness in presenting the drama and complexity of human emotions.) meanwhile, cyanobacteria come back to threaten us every summer and seagrass beds are gaining strength. With the Programme de soutien régional aux enjeux de l’eau (PSREE), we seized the opportunity to go further,” shared Gérin. For the SOS Tributaries project, Blue Massawippi selected the six tributaries in the Lake Massawippi watershed with the highest concentrations of phosphorus and suspended solids.Throughout the summer, analyses will be conducted to identify the sources of phosphorus and suspended solids in each tributary.By this fall, Blue Massawippi hopes that the issues will be identi?ed, and solutions will be proposed to the homeowners and municipalities that surround Lake Massawippi.SOS Tributaries is one of 12 projects selected by the PSREE, a program issued under the Quebec Water Strategy for 2018 – 2023.Blue Massawippi and its partners have invested $67,000, with nearly 75 per cent being provided by the Quebec government. In collaboration with Blue Massawippi and the Quebec government, the municipalities of Ste- Catherine-de-Hatley and Hatley, the Corporation de la Rivière Noire, and the Conseil de Gouvernance de l’Eau des Bassins Versants de la Rivière Saint- François (COGESAF) are also involved in the project.“COGESAF is very pleased to collaborate on this project put forward by our long-time partner. It is the initiatives of dynamic and committed people involved in the water sector, such as Blue Massawippi, that make it possible to improve the quality of the water in the Saint-François River watershed. It is essential that all parties mobilize to preserve this precious resource,” said Stéphanie Martel, Director General of COGESAF.“This is just the beginning for Blue Massawippi,” shared Gérin.“If this project is successful, and we are able to identify the problems and propose solutions for the ?rst six tributaries, our goal is to eventually conduct analyses on every tributary that ?ows into Lake Massawippi.” Above all, it is important to note that blue-green algae are not only detrimental to Lake Massawippi’s ecosystem, but they also produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals, and potentially fatal when consumed in high concentrations.Dogs, who are more likely to ingest the toxins when cleaning themselves off after swimming in contaminated water, are more vulnerable to blue- green algae poisoning. Therefore, health professionals advise that when a person or their pet has been directly exposed to blue- green algae, they should rinse off with fresh water and seek medical help immediately.Blue Massawippi’s battle against blue-green algae and seagrass beds in Lake Massawippi One of the six tributaries selected for the SOS Tributaries project: Webster tributary.PHOTOS: MICHÈLE GÉRIN Map of Lake Massawippi and the six tributaries selected for the SOS Tributaries project.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 4 Friday, July 23, 2021 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Residences funeraries Funeral Homes a quality presence in the region TTh e Tradition of Cas Funeral H omes, • Local people to take care of local families • A courteous service in English or in French • Funeral homes near you in many municipalities 819-564-1750 | www.casshomes.ca Lennoxville, Sawyerville, Cookshi e, Richmond Rock Forest, Windsor, Stanstead, Ayer s Cliff Serving the community for over 100 years and still counting! By Nick Fonda Until June 29, when Steve’s opened up for business just across the street from Gunter’s Hotel, Richmond had been without a barber for a decade or longer.“At one time, there were four barbers operating in Richmond,” says Steve Duperron, the owner the town’s new barber shop.“It’s hard to explain just why barbers disappeared,” he muses.“One of the reasons seems to be that there was no one to take over from the generation that was retiring. As barber shops closed, men started going to hairdressers to get their hair cut, or driving to bigger centers like Sherbrooke or Drummondville, where a few barber shops still survived.” “But it’s changing,” Duperron says.“There’s a growing demand for barbers.I’ve only been open for three weeks, and my clientele has grown week by week.I’m already contemplating installing a second chair and hiring a barber to work with me.” A single father with two school-aged children, the barber is very conscious of the strain that his new business venture is putting on his family.“So far I’ve been putting in 55- hour weeks,” he says.“Theoretically, I’m closed on Sundays and Mondays, but I haven’t yet had a Monday off, either because I’ve had requests for appointments or because of shopping trips. My shop is open, but I’m still not fully equipped or supplied. For example, I’m waiting for a small machine that warms towels.” While not essential, a hot towel is but nevertheless very useful as the ?rst phase of a shave.“If you wrap the lower face and neck with a warm towel for a minute or two,” Steve explains, “the pores of the skin will fully open. This will push the individual hairs of the beard as far out as they will reach. The shaving lather, which is applied next, will make it easier for the razor to slide smoothly over the skin and slice the hair at the lowest possible point.” Despite the ads for the latest multi- blade home razors, and the technology behind them, there is a noticeable difference between a shave at home and a shave administered by a barber wielding a hot towel and a freshly honed straight razor. The latter leaves the skin tingling like new, and the beard takes a little longer to grow out.“Shaves aren’t as popular as they once were,” says Steve, who, to date, has had only two clients ask for a shave.Fittingly, a few of the posters that decorate the walls announce that clients have come to the right place to get a shave. However, they are all reproductions of posters from more than a century ago and advertise prices from that era: Shave 5 cents.A shave at Steve’s Barber Shop today costs $20.Steve Duperron only recently turned to barbering, although it’s a trade for which he seemed almost predestined.Steve is a Richmond native, (a grandson of Leo Duperron, who was well-known locally for his oil paintings) and he’s lived in his hometown for practically his entire life.Similarly, his ?rst career was with a livestock auction house that saw him working as close as Danville and only rarely further than St.Hyacinthe.All was well until a workplace accident left him with a severely injured shoulder that never completely healed despite extensive treatment.“I knew I could never return to the work I used to do,” he explains, “but I was at a loss as to what to turn to.It was friends who suggested I should consider barbering.” It was a suggestion that Steve thought over only brie?y before enrolling in a barbering course offered in Drummondville.“It’s ironic, in a way,” he explains, “because I’ve always had an eye for hair.I would notice that someone was combing his hair differently, or that he’d had it cut differently.” More than that, Steve already had experience barbering: he has been cutting his own hair for years.“I started because I seemed unable to ?nd a hairdresser who could give me the cut I wanted. At a certain point, I bought a pair of hair clippers and started experimenting on myself,” he says.As one might expect, it was not easy, certainly not at ?rst.“I held a mirror in one hand and the clippers in the other,” he says.“I was working with a mirror image, so I had to really think about every cut with the clippers.I made lots of mistakes, and when that happened, I’d clip everything short and wait for my hair to grow back in.It took me about four or ?ve years before I was able to regularly do a competent job.” While there are no legal requirements to follow a barbering course before opening a barber shop, and despite his long experience cutting his own hair, Steve opted to take the course in Drummondville.“I de?nitely learned things,” he says.“I began with a bit of a head start, and there were things I knew already, but there were also little tricks and techniques that were new to me.I might eventually have learned these on my own, but it might have taken years instead of just the few months of the course.” One of the techniques Steve mastered is that of ?ipping a pair of scissors so they no longer point outwards but rather the blades are tucked against the inside of the wrist and are pointing up the arm.The manoeuvre is as deft and smooth as a magician’s disappearing card trick. It saves the barber time, as he is not putting the scissors away and retrieving them every few minutes.Steve enjoyed the course, and he aced the ?nal exam.“It was a practical exam,” he explains.“We were asked to bring in two guinea pigs—two people whose hair we would have to cut.To pass the exam, we would have to give these two hair cuts within a set time and to the satisfaction of the examiner. As it happened, through a misunderstanding, I ended up going with my dad and with two uncles.I gave three haircuts instead of two, but I was still the ?rst person to ?nish.” Immediately after, he found work at Le Look, the hairdressing salon operated by Amanda Garrett.“I appreciated being at Le Look,” he continues, “but I soon realized that there was a demand for a barber in town.A barber is something like a bartender, he’s someone to talk to.Men and women talk about different things. In a barber shop you’ll hear talk about earned runs and goals against and litres per 100 km.In a hair salon you’ll hear about brownie recipes and sales specials.” Still, the decision to open his own barber shop was a dif?cult one.“It took all my savings to open here,” he says.“Equipping a barber shop is not cheap—I have one pair of scissors that cost $400—and there was no guarantee that my gamble would pay off.” Steve Duperron, and the 175 clients that entered his shop in his ?rst three weeks, are glad that it did.Bringing the and hear all about the program and their passion for it.Head over to our Facebook page or website at www.sherbrookerecord.com to watch the Friday File.KATHRYNE OWEN Friday File: The Mae Sot Education Project By Michael Boriero Quebec is rolling out its annual all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety awareness campaign, and this year the government has put a greater emphasis on educating the population about speeding, drugs, and alcohol.“Our government would like to remind people of the expected behaviours to ensure a safer environment for ATV users,” said Transport Minister François Bonnardel.Quebec recently imposed strict regulations around ATVs, such as holding a valid driver’s license.According to a press release, speeding, as well as driving under the in?uence, are the main causes of accidents and death in off-road vehicles (ORV) in the province. The campaign will be broadcast online, on the radio, in print media, and on billboards throughout the summer. It will run until the beginning of October. The government has also collaborated with the Fédération Québécoise des Clubs Quads (FQCQ) and the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).The campaign video features two SQ of?cers and an FQCQ trail supervisor.“Speed, alcohol or drug use, and failure to wear proper protective gear are the main risk factors, but it is also very important […] to have the necessary experience, and to plan your trip before venturing into more remote areas,” said SQ Chief Inspector Luc Belzile. He added that the SQ is present on many trails throughout the year, and there is an increase in police presence during high season in order to prevent any tragic accidents.Belzile noted that although it is important for recreational tourism, it is not a risk- free activity.Yohan Perron, head of the FQCQ, said the federation often reminds people to follow the rules of the road, especially the importance of wearing a helmet. However, raising awareness about impaired driving is equally necessary, given how dif?cult it is drive an ATV.“A quad is an active driving vehicle: you must adjust to the terrain and be able to adapt your driving to obstacles that may arise,” he said.“Quad riding is a leisure activity and we want to ensure that the user’s experience remains pleasant and safe at all times.” But Ngaire DeNora, who lost her 24-year-old son, Myles, in an ATV accident four years ago, remains unsatis?ed with the government. She believes the province is missing the bigger picture, and avoiding a major hurdle, which is to enforce training for all users.“It’s a step forward, and the fact that they are in collaboration with the SQ, but they always dodge the real bullet, which is they need mandatory safety training because it is not just about speeding, alcohol, and drugs, it’s also about how to maneuver those machines,” she said.DeNora has been an outspoken ATV safety activist since the tragic death of her son.She created a Facebook group called MAQ-People For Mandatory Safety Training for Quads and a page called The “Flip” Side of ATVs/Quads.There are more than 386,000 registered vehicles, according to an SAAQ study from 2016, but when DeNora spoke to a member of one ATV club — there are 110 clubs in the province — she learned that there are only about 60,000 active members in Quebec.“The other thing about those quad clubs is the Quebec government has sub-contracted out their responsibility to these quad clubs to train people, but there are a lot more ATV’s running the roads in Quebec than people who actually are active members,” DeNora said. She suspects the government wants to avoid taking responsibility for insurance purposes. If they admit that these vehicles are dangerous, then they will have to go through the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), DeNora explained. There have been close to 600 deaths linked to ATV and snowmobile accidents and more than 6,000 hospitalizations in Quebec over the past 10 years.Unfortunately, it’s a tourist attraction, and it stimulates the economy, she continued, which Bonnardel noted in the press release.DeNora pointed to Australia as a model for Quebec and Canada. The country has made a signi?cant push for mandatory safety training and installing safety bars on off-road vehicles.David Sullivan, an ATV activist out in British Columbia, has been pushing safety bars for years.“I’ve been advocating ATV safety for maybe 12 to 15 years now.My cousin had an incident where he ?ipped his ATV and broke his back,” he said.“He had to rehabilitate and learn to walk again, and retired from work early.” Sullivan, who is from Australia, started Quadbar Safety, after his colleague developed the cross- protection device for ATVs.The Quadbar, which is attached to the back of the vehicle, protects the driver from being crushed in the event that their ATV ?ips over.“I’ve had it on my bike for 12 years now and I don’t even know it’s there. You’ll get two sides of the coin. You’ll get people that will see the instant value in it and then people that don’t and they go ‘it’s not going to happen to me’.Eventually something is going to happen,” he said.Sullivan is working with several groups, including Red Cross and Parachute, a group dedicated to injury prevention through evidence-based solutions, and lobbying to the Canadian government, hoping to make Quadbars mandatory across the country.“The federal government has now given Parachute, the principle party, almost $400,000 to promote ATV safety and the cross-protection device and so this is the ?rst step in implementing it into the regulations and standards for ATV safety,” said Sullivan.ATV safety activist demands more from provincial government NGAIRE DENORA ATV safety activist Ngaire DeNora with her son Myles. At is already off to a rough start.Since the start, the people of Japan have made it clear that they do not want the Olympics to happen this year, especially due to Japan’s slow vaccine rollout. To make matters worse, experts announced in May that daily infections in Tokyo would have to be below 100 in order to safely hold the Olympic Games. However, last Thursday, 1,300 new cases were reported, the highest since January. Moreover, numerous athletes have already tested positive for COVID-19, forcing them to withdraw from the Olympics. Some of which include U.S.beach volleyball player, Taylor Crabb, Czech Republic table tennis player, Pavel Sirucek, and Dutch skateboarder, Candy Jacobs, among many others. Therefore, I believe that the Olympic Games should have been postponed for at least another year.My Take: By Taylor McClure Over the years I’ve lost support for the Olympics; there is a good reason why.I studied the Olympics and there is more to it than famous athletes coming together in one place to battle it out for a gold medal.Building the Olympic facilities doesn’t just involve construction, it also involves the displacement of people living in an insecure situation. The poor and low-income families are told to leave their homes in order to be torn down so that we, at their expense, can be entertained and spend millions on building sports facilities.Every four years, these individuals brace themselves for the inevitable. When we are made aware of the negative aspects that surround what we love, it’s not easy.We have to ask ourselves, is this something that I want to continue to contribute to?And to that end, I say no way.My Take: By Gordon Lambie There’s no shortage of issues with the Olympic Games on this or any year, most of which deserve more than 145 words worth of commentary, but something that sticks out to me when they come up every two to four (ish) years is how much more I enjoy watching some of the Olympic sports than the ones that are conventionally televised.Hockey and football have large and legitimate followings, and that’s ?ne, but I’d watch all the canoe slalom races if there was a consistent platform to do so.Similarly, as far as I’m concerned, the skiers who do aerial jumping in the wintertime are some of the most impressive, and possibly crazy, athletes I have ever seen.Possibly the greatest value of this ridiculous, overin?ated competition is the opportunity it gives us to step outside the world of professional sports and see something different. My Take: By Matthew McCully My Take: By Michael Boriero I think going forward with the Olympics during a pandemic proves beyond a shadow of a doubt the once-revered institution has lost its way. There was a time when athletes were the focus.Watching someone land an unlandable jump, beat a world record, or power through an injury and cross the ?nish line on the shoulder of a competitor was a source of great inspiration and national unity. And seeing all walks of life together on one stage, performing at their absolute best was my ?rst glimpse at different-looking people from places I didn’t recognize, and I was enthralled. Then somewhere down the line things went south. It’s almost as though the spirit of competition spilled off the playing ?eld and polluted the organizing committee. The Olympics stopped being about excellence, determination and perseverance. It’s all about money now, and athletes are paying the price. The Olympic Games in Tokyo have already turned into a disaster. There is a surge of COVID-19 cases in Japan, and many athletes have refused to participate due the pandemic. And tensions between the host country and the International Olympic Committee are high. The situation is far from ideal, and honestly, it probably should have been cancelled last year. What has struck me throughout this entire ordeal is the sheer power of the IOC.Japan objected to the Games, pleading to suspend or cancel the event. The IOC ignored them. There is money at play here.An unfathomable amount of money, reaching into the billions. But how can you put an entire population at risk, including thousands of athletes? The IOC apparently has no problem strong-arming an entire country.I wonder if countries will think twice before making a bid in the future. The Record welcomes your letters to the editor. Please limit your letters to 300 words. We reserve the right to edit for length, clarity, legality and taste. Please ensure there is a phone number The Record The Eastern Townships wasn’t an easy region to develop.Dif?culties presented by the landscape made it a challenge to attract settlement.Early pioneers did their best to try and build roads, but hills, rocks and mud made that an ominous task. And the arrival of the snow in winter made travelling close to impossible. The region was left isolated. It wasn’t until railways were brought to the Townships that villages started to experience prosperity and growth.Railways quickly became famous in England and the United States, but Canada was slow to hop on the same train.By 1850, England boasted 6, 621 miles of track, the United States more than 9,000 miles, and Canada just 68.When prominent Townshippers stepped up to the plate, the region became a busy place.Around the mid-19th century, prominent Townshippers like Alexander Tilloch Galt envisioned a railway that stretched from Montreal to Boston via the Eastern Townships.Businessmen in the Townships wanted to take advantage of the bene?ts that would result from a railway passing through the region and appointed Galt to deal with the matter.Galt went to Boston where he spoke with various men who were involved in the railways and he put together ‘Statistical Information relative to the proposed Rail Road from Montreal to Boston via the Eastern Townships.’ When Maine lawyer John Poor stepped onto the scene, he swiftly took action.Galt, Poor, and others pressured the Montreal Board of Trade and ?nally got support to build a railway line through Richmond and Sherbrooke to Portland.Initially the chosen hub was Boston, but Poor convinced Galt that Portland was the better option.Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski, a Polish military engineer, was hired to design the bridges and build the rails. He began in St.Hyacinthe in 1849, then Richmond in 1851.In 1852 he built the rails from Sherbrooke to Island Pond, Vermont, ?nishing in 1853 when the line then connected with the St.Lawrence and Atlantic Railway. The St.Lawrence and Atlantic Railway brought passengers from Montreal to Portland, with the very ?rst group of people travelling in 1853.Other railway lines, such as the Stanstead Shefford and Chambly Railway, the Quebec and Richmond Railway, and of course, the Canadian Paci?c Railway (CPR), that eventually criss-crossed their way throughout the Townships, brought prosperity and growth to the towns close to them.New businesses and industries emerged and farmers found new markets for their products.Labor was found in the building of the railways and the need for lumber, telegraph poles, food, lodging, buildings, and bridges, and men to conduct the trains and the train station made the Townships a busy place.A prime example of how small villages prospered thanks to the railway would be to follow the path of the Orford Mountain Railway line, chartered in 1888 to connect Eastman to Lawrenceville. It was meant to encourage the forest and mineral industries in the area, and it was headed by Judge Samuel Foster, a railroad enthusiast who pioneered various railway tracks in the region. Its construction began in 1889 and in October of 1891, it made its ?rst trip.By 1893, the line was extended to Kingsbury and it ran from there to Eastman where it connected with the Canadian Paci?c Railway. The trip took an hour and 45 minutes.Kingsbury experienced a development boom with a lath mill, a turning mill, a clapboard and shingle mill, and a box and tub factory that ship¬ped 100,000 butter boxes and tubs each year.Eventually, the O.M.R.was extended again to reach Stukely Lake, Windsor Mills, and then Mansonville and Bolton; where things got busy for the copper mines and the Potton Springs hotel. The decision to extend the line was based on the connection with the lumber industry since logs, pulp wood, and timber, formed the bulk of the train’s shipments.Sawmills bene?tted immensely from the railway passing through and with ready access to markets provided by the O.M.R., people such as George Williamson and Marcus Crombie became wealthy men.It also hauled logs for the Eastman Lumber Company. The CPR took over the OMR in 1910 and it planned to extend the line to the United States in North Troy. When the line began to struggle ?nancially, the extension was abandoned and nothing remains of the line today. The last section, between Lawrenceville and Eastman, was pulled in 1965.According to Record archives, a piece of the O.M.R.’s history, Engine 29, which found its beginnings on the line, Railways put Townships on the map The last section of the OMR, between Lawrenceville and Eastman, was pulled up in 1965.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL there’s nobody else to bet on but yourself.” Jerome Blake, Canadian Sprinter Canadian track star Jerome Blake has always dreamed of competing at the Olympic Games. Not so coincidentally, he has also always believed that he would achieve his dream, even when others around him had their doubts.Fast forward (pun intended) to May’s Diamond League meet at Gateshead, England, where Blake’s 4x100m relay team ?nished second, just two hundredths of a second out of ?rst place. In July at Stockholm, Sweden, he ran his personal best time of 10.15 in the men’s 100m.At only 25 years old, Blake has reached his prime in best-ever form and is ready to do his part, along with Andre De Grasse, Aaron Brown, Bismark Boateng, and Mobolade Ajomale, to push for an Olympic medal for Canada at Tokyo. In an interview back in September of 2019, Blake told me that he was focused on making the Canadian Olympic Team one day.“Start the preparations for the Olympic Games in 2020… the plan for that is to make the team and go for individual event…and hopefully do my best and possibly win a medal,” he said. We’ll know in August how prophetic he was, though nothing has happened to give cause to doubt him.The Vancouver native competes in both the 100m and 200m, though he’ll be focused on the men’s 4x100m relay team at the Tokyo Games. In this Q&A Blake talks about his training, nutrition and mentorship program.Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind Canadian sprinter Jerome Blake on fast track to Tokyo Olympic Games COURTESY Q: How does it feel to make the Canadian 4x100m relay team?A: It feels good to be named to the team as a part of the men’s 4x1, the team was selected based off times and rankings in the country.Q: What, if anything, did you do differently in your training to qualify?A: Well for one I moved from Vancouver to Orlando, Florida to more elite group just to put myself in a situation where I wasn’t sure how it would work out or what to expect because I’ve never moved away from home but with absolute trust in the work I was doing.I knew this season would be good.Q: Tell us as a professional sprinter, what drives you?A: I think I wanted to be the best in the world or be the best version of myself (that) I can be and to compete at the highest level for as long as I can and enjoy the experience and have fun with it as well.Q: How important is nutrition and sleep?A: With a healthy living lifestyle it will make the hard days in training a little bit easier. With proper nutrition you’re able to recover faster after hard workouts and hard days and in the gym, and a good sleep pattern will help you recover for the next day’s session.Q: Is it more dif?cult to eat healthy when you’re on the road?A: Honestly this year is my ?rst experience with travelling and racing on the international circuit; it was quite the experience, sometimes the food is not that great, and the time zones are so different you can’t sleep properly, and you can’t eat properly but you still have to compete and compete at the highest level, so there’s no excuses.Q: How did you discover the 100m and 200m as best events for you?A: I think the reason why I chose the 100m and 200m is probably because I didn’t want to run the 400m.Ever since I was young, because I had really long legs, coaches try to get me to run the 400m.I (wanted) to try anything else but run the 400m.Q: Is Aaron Brown still your mentor?A: Yes he is and is now my training partner as well so it’s great having your mentor as a training partner because he’s always there to help you whenever you’re struggling.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 father, Lyndon Sheldon: The love of music and life as a hard-working man.Everyone you ask will tell you he is a sweet man who is very personable, although a little shy.Being the youngest of the family, Sheldon says that he missed out on the ‘good old days’.When it comes to his mother and brothers, he said they’re all pretty close to one another.“We were ?ve boys, all almost three years apart, we sure were not angels.Well of course I was.My mother had her hands full,” the musician joked in a recent interview.Even if music was always a huge part of family life, Sheldon said that took a little while before he got interested in playing. Some little boys dream of a music career when they are very young, but that was not the case for Nick Sheldon.“It had to be in my early teens; my father would always be in his music room playing around.I would randomly go in and play his guitar when he wasn’t around. But of course getting caught meant he sat me down and said ‘wanna play? Then play!’ He would go on to show me a few chords to get me started,” Sheldon said.“I learned a lot but never read notes.I heard a song and would play on repeat and play along until I got it.Back then, there was no YouTube or online learning for me in the beginning.” After that, Sheldon said he sure wanted to become a musician and playing in a band sounded good to him, but not just any kind of music. His taste leaned towards something more ‘hard core’.“I wanted to be a rock star! That was my favorite music when I was a teenager. It was surely the cool thing to do.I know that it wasn’t my father’s cup of tea, but he always supported me.Even buying me my ?rst guitar, an old Fender Squire Strat!” the musician recalled.“It wasn’t a new one of course, but it was new to me.It’s one of those things I could never let go of.It is my go-to even to this day.” Despite their musical differences, when it came to his debut in a band, Sheldon played with his dad.“I was 15 when I started playing music with my dad.We played at a few halls, weddings and for my Godparents, Clifford Cormier and Cindy White. We also did a nice stretch of time playing at Bronco Billy’s in Magog.I would say those were the times where I really started to appreciate country music” he explained.Sheldon’s father and his aunt Lois knew an almost unlimited amount of country songs.Even though they had a playlist, those who know Lyndon are very aware that he could not say no to special requests so, most of the time, that playlist went out the window. For 15-year-old Nick, who was making his debut, that wasn’t easy.He had to get used to playing songs that had not been rehearsed or, in some cases, even heard. It was not stress- free to follow all the time. And today, this is something he has to deal with all over again every time he plays with his brother Brent.Like their father, special requests are something that his brother does all the time.COURTESY Nick Sheldon CONT’D ON PAGE 10 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 10 July 23 - Watching on Facebook bass man John (Little) posting himself singing songs while trucking or my Godfather Clifford Cormier sending out some good ole country songs via Messenger sure got me feeling like I am missing something,” the musician explained.Like for many of his peers, Sheldon said that for him, music is a weekend thing.During the week he has held the same job in the granite industry for 22 years at C Rouleau Granit. His son Mickel, 21, now works for him while his daughter, who’s freshly out of high school, is still trying to ?gure out which path she will follow.Music for him is the recreation part of life.Being with the boys and having fun.“Our band, Old School Country is comprised of my brother Brent on vocals, Clinton Mills on drums and Jonothan Little on bass. This is not about playing every song perfect (although they invest a lot of efforts to do so) it is all about enjoying playing with each other. My brother Brent, who is now relentless with his singing mimics, the same as my father once did and will sing any request he can do to please. It makes it hard to have a playlist but we make people happy and that’s the important thing” he stressed. When it comes to who his favorite artist is, Sheldon said it would be hard to pick one.He loves music overall, it changes with his mood, sometimes he wants to hear that old George Jones and other times he wants to listen to some Alan Jackson. His point of view on today’s country music and bands in bars is clear.“I can say I ?nd modern country music feels too pop and rock infused, not traditional enough. And on the other hand, you can’t replace a four- to-?ve-piece band with a DJ, it doesn’t hit the same!” he ?nished.Old School Country was among the favorite bands at The Country Music Appreciation Jam and people can’t wait till they hit the stage again.Nick Sheldon July 24 The Piggery Theatre presents the Gearey Family Trio on Saturday July 24 at 8 pm.Reservations only at 819-842-2431.Tickets 20$.No credit cards.Only payment method cash or cheque at the box of?ce.What’s On EVENTS WETLANDS ARE DISAPPEARING Protect them.Become a member today.www.ducks.ca 1-866-384-DUCK PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW TALK TV Listings July 23 - July 29, 2021 Page 11 Your week on TV FRIDAY EVENING JULY 23, 2021 Bell Star 6 PM 6:30 7 PM 7:30 8 PM 8:30 9 PM 9:30 10 PM 10:30 11 PM 11:30 12 AM WCAX # - - Channel 3 News at Six (N) CBS Evening News Entertainment Tonight (N) Secret Celebrity Renovation “Chris Paul” (N) ’ Å Love Island (N) ’ Å Blue Bloods Jaime arrests an intrusive reporter.’ Channel 3 News (:35) The Late Show With Stephen Colbert ’ Å WPTZ % - - NBC5 News at 6 (N) NBC Nightly News - Holt Tokyo 2020 2020 Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony. The Games of the XXXII Olympiad open in Tokyo with coverage of the lighting of the cauldron and the parade of nations from National Stadium.NBC5 News at 11 (N) CBMT & 206 301 CBC Montreal News (N) Rick Mercer Report ’ 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Primetime.A primetime special airing of the Opening Ceremony; beach volleyball- Canada vs.Netherlands.(N) ’ (Live) Å Tokyo Olympic Games CHLT _ 107 718 (5:58) TVA Nouvelles (N) (:29) Sucré salé (N) (SC) (6:59) Du talent à revendre “Les 2es demi-inales - A” ›› “Keanu” (2016) Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele.Un groupe d’amis prétend traiquer de la drogue.(DVS) (SC) TVA nouvelles (N) (:35) Sucré salé (SC) (:06) La liste noire Une unité enquête sur une disparition.(12:06) ››› “Ça” (2017) WMTW ( - - WMTW News 8 at 6PM (N) ABC World News Wheel of Fortune Å Jeopardy! Robert A.Nichols, Compton, QC 1934-2021 Robert A.Nichols was the second son to the late Nelson D.Nichols and Jessie A.Johnson, and younger brother to the late Russell J.Nichols, all of Compton, QC.Robert was born in the old farm house on Crystal Brook Farm,in Compton, Qc., where he lived his entire life.At the age of six, he went to the Compton French school, and learned to speak French ?uently. He did well in his school work, but he wanted to be working on the farm instead.Thankfully, his mother insisted that he get a good education and attend church on Sundays. After he graduated from elementary school, he went to Lennoxville High School, and rode on the Coaticook bus to get there. It was a happy day when he graduated from Lennoxville High School, and he could stay home and pursue his career in farming.Over the course of his lifetime, he improved the productivity of the farm by cultivating more land, and buying more cattle. His pride and joy was his herd of registered, pure-bred Ayrshires. He became known in the cattle world, and sold cows to breeders within Canada, and also exported some internationally, as far away as Venezuela. He competed in local fairs with his cows, and won some trophies and red ribbons. He was one of the ?rst pioneers of the embryo transplant procedure, in collaboration with the vets in Coaticook. The farm was originally purchased by the Nichols family (Albert Agustus Nichols, Cora Lee Libby) in 1887, and was passed down to Nelson, and then Robert. In 1987, to celebrate the Centennial birthday of the farm, Robert organized a large family reunion for descendants of the original Nichols family, and relatives travelled from near and far to celebrate their family heritage with all of the cousins.Robert and Beverley spent months organizing the event, and there were games, carriage rides, lots of great food, documents and artifacts to see, and lots and lots of visiting, hugs and laughs. It was one of the highlights of his life.Robert attended church regularly at St.Johns Anglican Church in Waterville, Qc., and was a warden there for many years. He worked together with the late Canon Keith Perry Gore to help the church get on stable ?nancial and structural footing. On September 20, 1958, he married Beverley Bessant, of Sherbrooke, QC, at St George’s Anglican Church, in Sherbrooke (Lennoxville), Qc., and together, they raised four children, three boys and one girl, Robert, David, Mark and Sandra. One of the boys, David, took over the farm, which has since passed to Robert’s grandson Benjamin, who continues to work toward its modernization and innovation.Robert welcomed the arrival of his grandchildren, and his great grandson Liam.He loved to play with them all and joke with them as often as he could.Robert knew that all work and no play was not good.Hence, he took time to play board games, croquet, and softball with his children, nieces and nephews, and anyone who wanted to join in.He coached the Moe’s River youth ball team, called the Aces. They played against teams from Huntingville and Lennoxville. It was fun to watch the ?ve year olds to seven year olds run around the bases after they hit the ball. One little player earned the nickname “Hercules”.Robert followed the Brooklyn Dodgers, and ater the Montreal Expos, and he also followed the NHL.Robert liked visiting with people and keeping up with the news.He enjoyed visits from relatives from out-of-town.He was always full of fun, with a quick wit.He liked to take walks, visit the cottage, tend his garden and berries, and savour good food.In early June of 2021, Robert was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure, and was cared for by the Palliative Care Services at the CHUS in Fleurimont, where he passed on June 15th, with his family by his side.On July 3rd, 2021, he was laid to rest in the Compton Cemetery beside his ancestors.Robert’s Christian faith was strong, and it saw him through all of the seasons of his life.He trusted God, and knew that he was headed for his eternal home.Though he will be missed greatly, it is a great comfort to have been surrounded by the kindness, support and thoughtfulness of family, relatives and friends during this time.We will carry fond memories of Robert within all of our hearts.Family of Robert A.Nichols The family of the late Robert Nichols, of Compton, Qc., would like to thank everyone who sent cards, charitable donations, ?owers, food and expressions of sympathy to us following the recent death of Robert, our dear husband and father.Your kindness and support was a comfort, and very much appreciated during this dif?cult time.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL even more important - defensive card-play agreements so that you are on the same wavelength at the table.North and South bene?ted from their preparations on today’s deal.Would you and your partner reach this desirable grand slam with only a combined 28 high-card points? In the auction, South’s two spades was an arti?cial game-force, asking North to rebid two no-trump.Three hearts was natural.Four clubs was a control-bid, showing a good hand for play in hearts.South used Roman Key Card Blackwood to learn that his partner had two aces and the heart queen. The declarer had only 12 immediate winners. He needed to establish a long diamond trick for a spade discard. But once that trick was set up and trumps were drawn, declarer would need a dummy entry, which could only be the club ace.So, after winning the ?rst trick with the spade ace, South continued with the heart ace, the diamond king, a diamond to dummy’s ace, a diamond ruffed high, a heart to dummy’s queen and another diamond ruffed high.South drew West’s last trump, played a club to dummy’s ace and discarded his spade two on the diamond six.At the end, West said to his partner, “It’s a long deal that has no tricks.” PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 24 Friday, July 23, 2021 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Today in history On this date: In 1621, the Virginia colony was granted the New World’s ?rst written constitution. In 1767, the Prince Edward Island land lottery was held in London, England. The Earl of Egmont had asked King George III to grant him Prince Edward Island forever. The Earl wanted to build armed castles and moats for himself and about 400 lesser lords. His request was turned down, and instead the land was divided up for colonization among people who had claims for military or other public service. In 1829, William Austin Burt of Mount Vernon, Mich.received a patent for his “typographer” -
