A review of Francesca Ekwuyasi’s Butter Honey Pig Bread By Angela Leuck In an opening scene of the novel by Nigerian-Canadian writer Francesca Ekwuyasi, one of the three main characters, Taiye, is preparing a feast for her twin sister, Kehinde, who is returning to Lagos, Nigeria, after 10 years in Montreal. We are treated to a description of Taiye making a Salted Caramel Chocolate Cake.In keeping with the section’s title, “Butter,” we learn: “For the batter, you will need as much butter as you can manage without leaving your cake too dense and greasy.Taiye would die in pure bliss if she were to drown in a tub of good butter, so she used plenty.” Butter Honey Pig Bread (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2020) invites us into a world of sensory pleasure. There are more than enough recipes, delectable meals, exquisite scents and tastes to thoroughly delight. For instance, Taiye’s hobby upon her return to Lagos is keeping bees.“The idea of keeping bees, with gorgeous raw honey as a reward, ?lled her with a delicate kind of optimism, a tender, pearlescent threshold to joy.” Ekwuyasi explains that her love of writing about food came from watching British cooking shows in her youth. But this isn’t only a novel about food, wonderful though that is.It’s also about sex—with a dash of spirituality tossed in to give it extra tang.In the following excerpt, the author very cleverly lays out the connection between all three. It’s a ?ashback to the time when Taiye and her sister were ten years old at a catechism class one Sunday. It begins with the nun, Sister Augustina, listing the seven capital sins and asking the children if they remember what they mean. One of the children replies: “Greed is when you want to eat all the biscuits, even if they’re not your own.” “No, that is gluttony,” another child interjected.More students jumped in, a small uproar as they scrambled to give the right answer.Sister Augustina whistled to seize their attention and placed a finger across her lips.Silence.She defined each of the seven deadly sins, starting with gluttony, and then, halfway to lust, she hoped she wouldn’t have to explain it.Of course, Taiye noticed: “What about lust? What does it mean?” For Taiye, who has led a hedonistic life with many female lovers, spirituality is something she wrestles with throughout the novel. The basic story line of Butter Honey Pig Bread concerns the evolving relationship between the two sisters and their mother, Kambirinachi. The relationship is complex.First, the girls are identical twins, which in Nigerian myth are often accorded supernatural qualities. They are inseparable until a traumatic incident drives them apart: Taiye goes to study chemistry in England and later moves to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to attend culinary school, while Kehinde decides to study in Montreal where she earns extra money working at a restaurant.Though separated, the twins remain almost mystically connected.Another element that complicates their relationship is their mother’s delicate mental state.Again, the author draws upon Nigerian myth, this time about “ogbanjes”—malevolent spirit children who torment their parents by dying and coming back to life again. As a child, Kambirinachi had troubled her own mother with her many mishaps in which she apparently died, then came back to life.Even into adulthood, Kambirinachi continues to hear voices of those who she believes are trying to lure her back to the darkness and death.Despite this inner struggle, Kambirinachi makes a good marriage to a man who adores her, and for a while her life is blissful. She gives birth to her beautiful twin daughters and her artwork ?ourishes, for Kambirinachi is a talented artist.Such happiness is short lived. Her husband is the victim of the violence all too common in the “voracious beast that is Lagos.” Things take another bad turn shortly after with the “traumatic incident” that befalls the twins. At the same time, their mother withdraws further into her own haunted inner world. When Taiye graduates from culinary school in Halifax, she returns to Lagos and decides to stay to care for their mother. She attempts to lure her back into the world by cooking delicious food, to which her mother responds. The underlying theme of Butter Honey Pig Bread is that immersing ourselves in the senses, not only through food, but music, art, and, yes, sex, may be the best—perhaps even the only—path to real recovery and forgiveness. In this excerpt, Ekwuyasi shows much may be gained from experiencing the pleasure of something as simple as eating a pomegranate: After taking delicate bites of the soft pink flesh, shallow bites to leave the grainy seeds undisturbed, until the fruit became a knobby, slimy ball, she would pop the entire thing into her mouth, and spit out the fruit’s tiny seeds, one by one, all sucked clean.” The author’s message is clear: consume life to the full until it is all sucked clean! Sherbrooke’s city hall on Thursday, timed to coincide with the commemoration taking place at the National Assembly in Quebec City.Although kept small and brief in order to respect regulations on public gatherings, the event was attended by several members of the city council and administration, as well as an honour guard made up of police of?cers and ?re?ghters.Steve Lussier, Mayor of Sherbrooke, and Dr.Stéphane Tremblay, the President and General Manager of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, spoke brie?y to acknowledge the more than 10,000 people who have fallen victim to the virus in the last year across the province and the more than 300 in the Estrie Region speci?cally.“These people are more than a statistic,” Lussier said.“They were fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and citizens that we remember.” For his part, Tremblay spoke to the signs of hope brought by the ongoing vaccination campign, but he warned that the work of ?ghting COVID-19 is far from over.“The physical consequences of the pandemic will disappear faster than the psychological consequences,” he said, calling the latter, “the next great challenge we face.” Those present then stopped for a time of quiet re?ection, concluded by the ringing of the bells at the nearby St.Michel Cathedral.STEPHANE TREMBLAY Moment of silence Carolyn Bentzen.“He was supposed to get the jab on Feb.19,” Bentzen explained, along with the rest of the residents at the manor. She called in the evening to ask her dad if he had any side effects from the vaccine, but he said he hadn’t received the shot.According to Bentzen, her dad lives at the end of the hall.By the time the team administering the vaccines reached Rolf, they had run out of doses.“We kept thinking they’ll be back,” Bentzen said. She saw in the paper that Manoir Stanstead was done, and Wales Home was coming up, so she ?gured a team would be back to ?nish the job at St.Francis.But after several days and no word, Bentzen contacted St-Francis manor director Gabriela Rotariu.“We had a meeting last week,” Bentzen said, to ?gure out why her father was not done ?rst since he was the oldest resident there, and what the plan was for him to receive the vaccine.According to Bentzen, Rotariu went onto the clicksante website and got Rolf an appointment for April 16, and then offered to drive him.“I wasn’t impressed,” Bentzen said, going online herself and ?nding an earlier appointment for her dad on March 18.Then the tune changed on Monday.Bentzen got a call from Rotariu saying that a team from public health would be by the manor on March 11 to vaccinate Rolf and other residents they had missed. She added that since Bentzen is a primary caregiver and spends so much time at the residence, that she was eligible for the vaccine as well.According to Bentzen, she and her father both got the jab at 2 p.m.A total of 12 doses were administered, Bentzen said.St-Francis director Rotariu explained that when the vaccination team came on Feb.19, they arrived with the precise number of doses required to cover the residence. The problem, Rotariu said, is that dosages are not an exact science.A vile can sometimes hold six doses, and sometimes only ?ve.“They missed four doses,” Rotariu said.“It was clearly their fault,” she said, adding that she expected that the team would be back the next day. When asked why Rolf wasn’t prioritized because of his age, Rotariu said that would have been impossible.“They can’t jump from door to door,” she said, to vaccinate by age.The team moved systematically through the residence intending to reach everyone, she explained.“I’m glad it happened today,” Rotariu said.As of yesterday, 100 per cent of the residents who wanted the vaccine received it, she commented. Two residents refused the vaccine.Rotariu said she was relieved the ordeal was over, since she received a worrying email from the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS on March 9 saying that any residents missed during the vaccination campaign should make their own appointment through the website and ?nd their way to a vaccination centre.Otherwise, they would have to wait until a team returns to administer the second dose to residents to get their ?rst, Rotariu explained.According to the director, one of the four residents missing the vaccine can’t leave the premises.“Imagine what would have happened,” she said.According to a CIUSSS de l’Estrie- CHUS representative, vaccination teams are returning to private residences this week to complete vaccinations for seniors who were absent, or in the case of new arrivals. When asked about the March 9 correspondence suggesting residents were on their own, the rep speci?ed that if residents weren’t vaccinated because of a miscalculation of doses, a team would return to ?nish the job.In the event that a resident was absent, they have the choice of making an appointment along with the general population, or waiting until a vaccination team can return to the residence.Because of the many residences to cover, the rep said there was no way to know how long that could be.Missed vaccinations CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY 1) I’m not sure how I ended up on the webpage for the live feed of “Livermore California’s Centennial Light Bulb”, but there I was, taking a break from checking email to, well, look at a glowing lightbulb. While it may not have been as enthralling as a video of cute cats playing with a ball, this light bulb was actually quite incredible.First turned on in 1901, the light has been on continually since then, for 120 years! While admittedly it is not much to look at on a live feed video, the bulb is an important reminder that with some things in our world, what we call “progress” has actually taken us the wrong direction.(And, “they don’t make lightbulbs like they used to!”) Lightbulbs, textbooks, computers, fashion. Our society is always telling us that we need to buy more and make better what we already have. What we had last year is simply not good enough anymore. And if we think we can hold on to what we already have, companies often ensure that products are actually made to stop working after a certain time, so we have no choice to buy them again.Textbooks are given minor edits so students can’t ?nd the correct pages.Fashion is advertised as “out of date”.Cell phones no longer work with current apps. While technological progress has brought us so many incredible things, an unfortunate part of this process is the “forced obsolescence” that tries to ensure that we will never be happy with what we already have.I am reminded of the midrash, the story, about Moses and the ?rst set of broken tablets that he received on Mt.Sinai and which he broke when he saw the people building the golden calf. One tradition says that Moses was told to put not just the new, second set of Tablets in the Holy Ark, but also the broken set of tablets. These tablets are symbolic of a time when things did not go right, symbolic of a moment of brokenness in the community.By keeping the broken tablets along with the whole ones, the message is clear.True progress demands that we need to always remember where we came from, and hold on to both the memories of what has worked and what may be broken. We need the successes and celebrations, but also our mistakes, our tragedies, and our pain. One contributes to the other and both help carry us through life.Progress can only happen if we can know and grow from the fullness of where we have been.Sometimes it means changing that lightbulb, and sometimes it means we need to work harder to hold on to what we already have.2) Progress- how do we measure it?By GDP, the health of the stock market, the high school dropout rate?Do we measure world hunger, the suicide rate or the average life span? There are so many measuring sticks and so many con?icting priorities. If we are looking at the long term survival of our species surely the most important measure should be sustainability.Normally that would include the control of human activities so that damage to the environment is not a side effect to whatever activity we are engaged in.But sustainable human activity should also take into account the care we offer one another. For no human being can live well without love.Today more than ever before we are learning about the impact we have on one another. From the sel?ess health care workers we are so grateful for, to the increasing environmental damage due to our production processes.True progress can only be attained as we leave off competing for the world’s limited resources, nurture a spirit of collaboration with our fellow human beings and care for the natural world as if our lives depended on it.Hopefully that day comes about before it’s too late.3) Are we making any progress yet?Has society progressed beyond our racist past? Can we travel into the future on a more progressive path? The word “progress” suggests a journey. It leads me to believe that, bit by bit, sometimes slowly, we are creating a better world. The journey does not happen overnight. Many people know a famous book from the past called “Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. They may not remember the full title; “The Pilgrim’s progress from this world, to that which is to come.” This spiritual journey, going forward, was seen as a good thing. These days for many people nostalgia is prevalent.I noticed a Cereal company was going back to a campaign, from many years ago, where they put collectible plastic spoons in each box to encourage sales.PLASTIC !!! As if we need more plastic in the world. That is not progress, that is going backward. There are some cultural groups who even have a longing to move backward, to a time when their racist superiority was normal. They feel more comfortable with nostalgia than justice.Don’t get me wrong, I have some memories that make me feel good, but I wouldn’t want to live in the past today. For some political groups the term”progressive” is even seen as a dirty word.It is interesting to note that for people of colour, or new immigrants, or those who have felt the pain of gender discrimination, nostalgia does not appeal very much.I am unapologetically progressive.Let’s celebrate each moment of progress, and use that image to inspire people to create a better world.Let’s move forward and not romanticize the past. One word, only 3 voices this time. What do you thing of Progress?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rabbi the AstraZeneca vaccine, Quebec announced that they would administer the vaccine to adults of all ages, despite Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization declaring the vaccine “not recommended” for anyone over 65 years of age.Richard McCallum resides in Sherbrooke and is hesitant about the AstraZeneca vaccine, citing claims that there has not been enough testing done on its ef?cacy in senior citizens, something that has been reported by the national vaccine panel.McCallum agreed that the vaccine is not inherently bad and will be helpful in vaccinating younger, less at-risk groups, it’s the consequences of lower ef?cacy that concern him.“If someone in a younger demographic gets this vaccine and it doesn’t work, they might have a tough week, however for someone in my age group who could die from the ?u, consequences of a less effective vaccine are more severe,” the 64-year-old said.Despite offering the vaccine to seniors, Quebec’s immunization committee seems to agree with these points of McCallum.“… should not be routinely offered to people who present a very high risk of disease, complications and/or who would not respond well to any vaccine,” the committee wrote in a report. However, the fact that over half of the 213,000 vaccines received by Quebec this week have been the AstraZeneca variety, validates McCallum’s concerns that seniors could feel the need to take this vaccine.“How can I take that vaccine knowing that there are two other safer ones for my age group,” he said.On Thursday morning after the conversation with McCallum, reports were coming out of Europe that the AstraZeneca vaccine had been suspended in multiple countries, including Denmark, Italy and Norway. The reason was investigation of potential links to blood clots, however health of?cials from those countries stress that these are preliminary measures, and that no connection has been established.Women are most affected by the pandemic By Marie-Camille Théorêt Special to the Record According to a study published on International Women’s Day (March 8) by l’Institut de Recherche et d’Informations Socioéconomique (IRIS), women are more negatively impacted than men by the pandemic—and this is no exception locally.Numbers from the INSPQ show that women in Quebec represent 54,7 per cent of infected cases and 53,4 per cent of total deaths due to COVID-19.The Memphremagog MRC women’s centre, whose mission is to improve living conditions of women in the region, is a frontline observer of the rising inequalities.“Women were already living with a wide range of vulnerabilities. The pandemic has both highlighted and aggravated them,” said the centre’s coordinator Véronique Latulippe.Based on observations made during the pandemic, women in the MRC live more isolation and deal with more familial con?icts (with children and spouses) than before. There are also more women losing their jobs, dealing with a reduction of working hours, having a heavier mental load, and living with exhaustion or other mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. The centre also observed that there is a lot of trivialization towards the dif?culties women face.In cases of domestic violence, the pandemic makes it harder to reach out for help because women victims are often con?ned with their abuser. When everyone returned to work after the ?rst lockdown, there was an increase in requests for help. The women’s centre offers temporary housing for those in need and offers references to other programs in the Townships. The Center also has two bilingual social workers to intervene with and help English-speaking women. In the workplace Additionally, the IRIS study shows that women occupy the majority of at-risk jobs; nurses (89,5 per cent), bene?ciary attendants (84 per cent), and daycare workers (96 per cent). In Magog’s early childhood center L’Enfant-Do, there are a total of 80 children from 10 months to 4 years old.The staff is composed of 23 women and no men.Because of the pandemic and the numerous sanitary procedures, stress levels are up and the center is short staffed.“The pandemic has created high levels of stress and there is not 100 per cent stability.Sometimes, employees can’t come in for three days because they are at risk so this means we are short staffed. Then, if a child has symptoms, one of the girls has to stay in isolation with him or her. Therefore, one less person is working,” said Patricia, one of the daycare workers.Even though parents remain understanding, it gets frustrating for these women because they cannot offer all of the support that they want to.The different sanitary measures also asked for a lot of adaptation since groups of children cannot be mixed together. The daycare workers have to wear masks and glasses almost at all times. They are excited to ?nally receive visors in April—because they still do not have them—so that children will be able to see their faces.Even if they received a wave of appreciation, daycare workers remain invisible.“We had a lot of acknowledgement because we were present in times of need. There has been a good recognition, but we would’ve liked to get bonuses just like workers in hospitals and other essential services did,” added Patricia.Véronique Latulippe also identi?ed that one positive thing coming out of the pandemic is that the dif?cult conditions of frontline workers are being highlighted.“The positive thing is that it will probably help them negotiate better working conditions even though we’ve been advocating for this for years. We’ll see if this momentum will sustained after, but I am pretty disillusioned about that,” said Latulippe. The IRIS study also puts to light the inequalities Canadian women still face in the job market today: for every $1,32 earned by a men, women earn an average of $1 in the job market.Gas leak shuts down part of Alexandre Street Record Staff A gas leak on Alexandre Street brought from my usual routine, but because when I got on the bus someone who got on with me was wearing a procedural mask.I remember thinking to myself, “ is that really necessary?” As it turns out, it was probably a good idea.Looking back on the past year and looking ahead to the future, I think that it’s going to be important to consider and admit the places where we were wrong, both as individuals and as society. Some, like my mask judgement, are already obvious, but others will only become clear as time moves on.It is something that we’re going to have to work on together, not to pass judgement but so we can do better next time. This past year taught me a lot of things.I didn’t wash my hands nearly enough before the pandemic, and I consider myself a fairly clean person.I spent too much money going to bars, restaurants and movie theatres.Who knew you could save money when you’re not buying $10 drinks and $20 popcorn. But the biggest takeaway for me over the last 12 months is realizing I took my friends and family for granted.I was always the one to cancel at the last minute. It was rude and inconsiderate.I know, I’m not perfect. But I never considered the possibility that dinner with my parents would be ripped away from me.At the risk of sounding cliché here, I’ve learned to cherish the people around me.If I didn’t have support from friends and family, this year would have been a lot harder. My Take: By Gordon Lambie My Take: By Matthew McCully I’m still in survival mode, so it’s too soon for me to consider what I have learned in the past year during the pandemic. But I know what I don’t know.I don’t know why I couldn’t use the time given to me in the past year to better myself.I didn’t lose my job.I didn’t want for anything. My family was safe. All I had to do was stay home. It’s funny, under normal circumstances I am the ?rst person out the door of a crowded room.I cherish my quiet alone time. When it’s just a weekend I can’t risk sparing any of it, but give me a whole year and I’m lost in oblivion. It’s like asking for a glass of water and being dropped in the middle of a lake.Luckily, I can swim. But the question is, how far?My Take: By Michael Boriero My Take: By David Rossiter Last spring’s abrupt halt to eali y has taught us a lot.I thi k the most gla ing rea ization is to n t take anything for granted. As with all illnesses, there is tragedy and death which an lead to a furthered appreciation of life.I think that lots of the things that we’ve learned to not take for granted are smaller and more insigni?cant than life itself.Yet together, they are so important.Seeing stranger’s smiles, now shrouded by cloth, on public transportation o in lineups.Ext nd ng an invite to your cookout wit out wor ying about going ov r a gathering limit.Th si ple handshake w th an older ge tleman you met while havi g breakfast at Pizzaville. All small, insigni?cant things, but comforting in a way.People may disagree about them having been taken away at all, but as a whole we understand how integral they are to human nature. My Take: By Taylor McClure Anyone who knows me knows that I have the worst luck; it runs in the family. But if the last year taught me one thing, it’s that there is no such thing as bad luck.Things may not always go our way, we can hit a lot of bumps in the road, but they are there for a reason. They may serve as a nod to slow down and take a step back or as an obstacle we need to overcome to get where we want to go.Does that necessarily mean we have bad luck?We don’t like these bumps, but like when we are driving a car, we can’t always expect a smooth ride.We may have experiences that challenge us, but this is what makes us into the best person that we can be, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. What can be said about the pandemic that has not already been said a thousand times? It has stretched me thin and knocked me down – but I think it is the fact that I am able to write these things and have you nod along that scares me.Empathetic acknowledgments of the pandemic just seem to slip off the tongue these days.Over the past few months, we’ve seen the conversational “I’m good! Yourself?” casually morph into a morbid “this year has been tough.” Perhaps it is my end-of-winter blues speaking but I cannot help but think the entire population has shut down emotionally.Everyone is stressed, tired and sad and I am worried this compassion fatigue will become the new normal for the years to come.Though, perhaps it is a good thing that we are talking about it and not ignoring our traumas. My Take: By Marianne Lassonde PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY city of Sherbrooke and the Canadian Union of Public Employees concluded their year-long negotiations over the Crossing Guard Collective Agreement.Discussions included re- de?ning sections, requests for longer paid holidays, and a salary increase.According to Alain Savignac, union councillor for the Sherbrooke crossing guards, negotiations started in early spring of last year but had been delayed several times because of the pandemic. This, despite the agreement coming to an end in Dec.2019.After only ?ve sessions, 72 per cent of the 62 Sherbrooke crossing guards voted in favour of the city’s proposed terms. These included a 15 per cent salary increase over a seven- year period and three additional paid holidays in December.“We wanted more but we are pretty happy with what we got,” admitted Savignac. While the union’s original demands included a 15 per cent salary increase over ?ve years instead of seven and two weeks paid vacation, Savignac said there was not a lot of leeway when it came to negotiations.According to him, salary-related discussions changed course once the ?re?ghters’ union had agreed to an increase over seven years. After that, all he could do was match that increase for crossing guards.“For employees of the city, once the framework of the negotiations has been established, it is dif?cult to ask for more,” explained Savignac. While appreciative of the changes in salary, Louis-Denis Côté, a crossing guard located near Carillon School in Sherbrooke, believes an increase over a shorter period of time could have been possible if negotiations had been delayed until after the pandemic.“It was not necessarily urgent to vote in favour,” said Côté.“I don’t mind it but I wish they had focused more on decreasing the requirements when moving up a [salarial] echelon.” Côté, 73, has been a crossing guard for about a year as a way to occupy his time and earn a little bit more money before retiring. He said the short hours and summer holidays drew him to the job but he quickly found the salary was not enough to cover gas.“At one point, I was travelling between Brompton and Sherbrooke,” added Côté.He also admitted it was normal for a crossing guard to stay in their cars between noon and 3 p.m.to avoid unnecessary gas usage.“[The noon shift] is only 30 minutes. It is almost not worth it to go home.” The current starting salary for a school crossing guard is $13.93 with four possible increases after every 700 hours worked. When you are only working 20 hours a week, however, it can take a while to move up the salary ladder.“I would have liked to decrease the hours to 600 instead of 700 and I would have increased the starting salary,” explained Côté.“It would draw in more people.” While Savignac understands the importance of a higher starting salary to ?ght retention and recruitment struggles, he said that, as of right now, the proposed two to 2.5 per cent yearly increase was the best the union could do.“We have come up with an agreement with the city where we are willing to recognize previous experience,” added Savignac, who said people with experience similar to that of crossing guards are more likely to have a higher starting salary. For Côté, however, without an immediate increase, it is “almost not worth it” to work 700 hours for a few more cents.Though, he feels he might be alone in that sentiment given that the majority of his colleagues have given over a decade to the profession. The approved changes in salary and paid vacation are set to happen sometime in the next few weeks but no date has been given yet.By Gordon Lambie On Wednesday morning Sherbooke’s city council adopted a resolution asking Quebec’s Environment Ministry to permanently extend its moratorium on the dumping of leachate from the Casella land?ll in Coventry Vermont into Lake Memphremagog, based on the fact that the lake serves as the source of drinking water for the entire city. The current moratorium was established in 2019 in response to concerns voiced on both sides of the border, but is only set to last until the end of 2023.According to Mayor Steve Lussier, the renewed concern in the city and surrounding region come as a result of the discovery of elevated levels of PFAS chemicals, linked to the land?ll runoff, at the city’s water intake in September and October of 2020.“We are concerned about the presence of contaminants found at the City of Sherbrooke’s water intake because the per?uorinated compound found in highest concentration in the city’s untreated water corresponds exactly to the per?uorinated compound that was found to be the majority in the leachate from Coventry in 2018,” explained Jean-Pierre Fortier, Head of the city’s water management and construction division.“It is dif?cult for us not to draw a parallel between the presence of contaminants in our raw water intake and the transport of leachate from Coventry to the Newport sewage treatment plant.” Re?ecting on the recent recognition the city has received for the quality of its drinking water and the possible health impacts of PFAS chemicals and other contaminants on the population, the council indicated an intention to call on the Federal and Provincial Governments to petition for continued protection of the lake, beyond the current deadline.Meanwhile, south of the border, a petition is being circulated by the Don’t Undermine Memphremagog’s Purity (DUMP) Advisory Committee to try to have the State designate the lake a “lake in crisis.” According to group spokesperson Henry Coe, state law is such that a petition of 15 or more people can call on the Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources to apply the designation, thereby opening up funding for scienti?c and environmental initiatives to help preserve and improve water quality.“We are taking a new tack,” Coe said, explaining that the petition is focused on addressing a wide variety of issues facing Lake Memphremagog, and not just the issue of leachate.Coe highlighted the fact that 75 per cent of the waters that ?ow into the lake do so from the United States, even though the majority of the lake itself is in Canada.Seen through that lens, and recognizing the fact that the body of water is a source of drinking water for at least 175,000 people, he argued that protecting that water is an ethical and moral obligation for Vermonters. The petition, which is being hosted online under the title “Restore and Protect Lake Memphremagog’s Water Quality” at change.org, has been signed by more than 1,700 people at this point.Coe said that at least 500 of those people are Vermonters with 100 more being con?rmed Quebecers.“Without Canadian representation in this effort we would never have gotten this far,” Coe said, naming Robert Benoit from Memphremagog Conservation Inc, as a particularly important ally.Speaking to the issue of leachate speci?cally, Coe said that an estimated 36 million gallons made their way into the lake through the Newport plant between and 2010- 2019 when the moratorium started, most of that being before a massive expansion was authorized for the land?ll site.“The so called ‘forever chemicals’ can’t be ?ltered out by customary municipal wastewater treatment plants,” he said, pointing out that even under the moratorium, the problematic material just ends up in the Winooski River, which ends up in Lake Champlain.Negotiations close for crossing guard salary increase Sherbrooke joins push to extend Scrapbooks only rarely stand the test of time.Compiled according to the passing interests of the individual who made them, they tend to end up at the bottom of a drawer or the back of a closet and are of only ?eeting interest to the heirs who discover them decades later. However, an exception to the rule is the scrapbook that turned up last summer at the Centre d’Art de Richmond and is soon to be moved to a new home at the museum of the Richmond County Historical Society.“We came across it as we were doing a bit of housecleaning at the CAR of?ce last summer,” says Dominic Fontaine-Lasnier, who was elected president of the Richmond non-pro?t music school in 2020.Unsure what to make of the artifact, Dominic and his partner, Hélène Boulé, put it in a box with several other items of uncertain utility, and it wasn’t until November that Hélène again picked up the problematic, ten by seven-inch scrapbook.Protected by a maroon cover with gold lettering that announces: Souvenir Post Card Album, its 28 pages of faded black construction paper are largely ?lled with newspaper clippings, including a few obituaries, and with postcards, some addressed simply: Miss Maggie Murphy, Richmond, Canada.Other items include Maggie Murphy’s ?rst grade report card, the program from the 12th annual St.Patrick’s Day concert held on March 19th, 1889, and an undated classroom photo showing some 30 young boys and girls, and their classroom teacher, a nun in a towering white wimple. While many items in the scrapbook are not dated, the most recent postmark on the postcards is 1906 “We knew from Jeannette Charland, who was herself a student at the convent, and who started the music school in 1982, when the nuns quit the building, that the scrapbook was part of an exhibit that was mounted some 25 years ago.But she wasn’t aware of its provenance,” says Hélène Boulé.“I still wasn’t sure what to do with the scrapbook and I wondered if Maggie Murphy might have descendants in the area.I thought I’d try to ?nd out,” she continues.Currently completing a certi?cate program at Laval University in archival studies, this was the sort of problem that was right up Hélène’s alley.Within a week or so, her research led her to Maggie Murphy’s great grandnephew, A.J.Delisle who lives in Vancouver and who is still in possession of several of his great-great- grandfather’s treasured heirlooms. It also led her to learning about the contributions of James Murphy, a 19th century Irish immigrant who found great success, and contributed very signi?cantly to the growth and prosperity of Richmond, but who also endured great tragedy. The very ?rst item glued into Maggie Murphy’s Post Card Album is a news clipping from August 22, 1868 which describes a testimonial dinner for her father, James Murphy, held “at the Saloon of the GTR depot, Richmond” where he was presented with a gold watch from “the Merchants of Richmond and Melbourne, as a token of esteem.” The event takes on a more surprising aspect if Murphy’s age at the time is taken into consideration; he was only 32.“When I sent Mr.Delisle scanned photos of the items in the scrapbook, he wrote back to say that he was very pleased to see all those documents, and that he had the gold watch mentioned in that ?rst article, as well as a mandolin that came from Maggie’s youngest sister,” notes Hélène.James Murphy was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1836 and emigrated to Canada with his family when he was 11 or 12.At the age of 18 he entered the employ of the Grand Trunk Railway and four years later was appointed to the relatively prestigious post of agent in Richmond, at the time one of the busiest railway centres in the country. He left the GTR in 1890 to become a federal customs agent, a post he held until his retirement at age 83.He died ?ve years later in 1924.He married Irish-born Ellen Morrissey in 1859, a year after moving to Richmond. The couple had six children, but only two—Maggie and her younger sister Annie—outlived their parents.James Murphy’s obituary (in the March 5, 1924 edition of the Sherbrooke Record) notes him as being a generous and philanthropic person who was known across the country. He was active in his community, and, among other things, he was one of the founders of the St.Patrick’s Society and served as chairman of the local Catholic school board. His ?nancial success is re?ected in the large brick house he built in 1884 at 1084 Main St.north, just two doors down from the Mont St.Patrice Convent which was built the same year. All four of his daughters attended the convent, and all four studied music there.“What is interesting about James Murphy’s house,” says Hélène, “is that it stayed in the family until 1957 when it was bought by Jeannette Charland’s mother. In the almost 140 years of its existence, it has been owned by only two families. The implication is that Maggie Murphy’s diary never travelled more than a hundred metres.” She continues, “It was a surprise to Jeannette when we told her of the connection between her house and Maggie Murphy. After Maggie’s death, the house passed to her husband who died just a few months later. His heir was his brother, a priest who had no use for the house, and it was he who sold it to Jeannette’s mother.” Maggie Murphy, who was christened Margaret Sarah, was born in 1871 in Richmond and seems to have lived there all her life. She was married in 1912 to Francis C.Bouvette.The couple seem not to have had any children. In 1925, a year after her father’s death, she bought the house from her sister, Annie, who had inherited it from their father. She lived there until her death in 1955.“A.J.Delisle is not the only descendent of James Murphy that we found,” says Hélène.“Although the other one we found by a rather remarkable coincidence.” “We were scrolling through Kijiji when we saw an attractive antique chair,” she explains.“We called. The seller had only just put it up for sale.In talking to him we discovered that he was from Richmond. His name was Richard Thibault, a brother to René Thibault.” “The chair he was selling,” Hélène Boulé continues, “came from his grandmother, Loretta Davis. She was well-known in Richmond in her day as she was the piano accompanist when silent movies were screened in town. She was also Maggie Murphy’s sister- in-law by marriage.” “The scrapbook is a fascinating artifact,” says Dominic Fontaine- Lasnier, “but the Centre d’Art is a music school and we’re not set up to either exhibit or store it.We’re happy to know that the RCHS can provide a home for it.” “It is a fascinating artifact,” says Norma Husk, president of the RCHS, “and we appreciate the gift.We especially appreciate all the sleuthing Hélène did to trace the story of this scrapbook.” It’s worth noting that as part of this year’s Richmond St.Patrick’s Society on-line celebrations, there will be a screening of a short video on the scrapbook and the history behind it.COURTESY COURTESY PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY Michael Boriero - Local Journalism Initiative Reporter The St.Patrick’s Society of Richmond and Vicinity is presenting its annual Richmond Irish Heritage Festival virtually this year as a result of the pandemic. The event was cancelled outright last March.According to Patricia Keenan, a member of the festival committee, they managed to have one event, a corn beef supper, before shutting the rest of the activities down out of fear of spreading COVID-19.She told The Record that the St.Patrick’s Day parade was supposed to be on the weekend. But with the threat of an infectious virus, and an average of 5,000 participants in the parade, the organization decided it was best to avoid large crowds.“It took a while to get our head around it, but we were not really left with a sensible choice otherwise,” said Keenan. But this year is different. The organization has had plenty of time to prepare a virtual event, which they plan to spread out over three weeks. The festival begins at 7 p.m.on March 13 with a word from St.Patrick’s Society President Erika Lockwood. There are musicians; Isabelle Gosselin, Julie Miller, France Thibault and Laurent Hubert.Nick Fonda will be the storyteller and several vignettes will be offered on the organization’s website highlighting heritage sites in the area.On March 17, St.Patrick’s Day, the organization is running a “Celtic Kitchen Party”, featuring several musical groups and a traditional toast by Devin Keenan.A few days later, on March 20 at 7 p.m., there will be virtual St.Patrick’s Day Parade.Julie Miller will perform on the harp once again and give people a brief history of the harp in Ireland.Later in the evening, Nick Fond will tell the story of Maggie Murphy, daughter of James Murphy, co-founder of the St.Patrick’s Society in 1877.“We all like to know where we come from and 40 per cent of Quebecers and 20 per cent of Canadians trace some heritage to Irish ancestry,” Keenan said. The organization is also encouraging residents to celebrate St.Patrick’s Day by decorating their homes, building ?oats in their back yard, and throwing a ‘mini’ parade for themselves.Residents can take photos or videos and send it to the St.Patrick’s Society. They must send everything in before March 19.The videos and photos will be on display in the virtual parade, which people can ?nd by visiting https://richmondstpats.org/.The organization will also unveil the design for a proposed mural on Main Street.Keenan told The Record that this festival plays an important role in Richmond, reminding residents about the history of the area and its Irish in?uence. With summer also right around the corner, the festival marks a turning point for a lot of people.“March is the end of winter and we’re looking for celebration, especially this year,” said Keenan.ST.PATRICK’S SOCIETY PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER will present the exhibit “Covered hands…The history of gloves” from of March 14 to Nov.28, 2021.As far back as ancient Egypt, gloves were a popular costume accessory.Archaeological excavations have uncovered the remains of a pair of gloves in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. From the 17th century, gloves became a marker of social status, important objects revealing the wealth of the wearer.Just wearing gloves came with a long list of “rules” women were expected to follow.Victorian etiquette books advised women to “never go out without gloves.” Over time and with the exception of some ceremonial uniforms, wearing gloves as a costume accessory has become rare. They are mainly used for protection and safety purposes in many spheres: the health sector, the sports sector and the very diverse universe of trades. This exhibition presents gloves made from a multitude of materials and styles while highlighting their context of use and their era.The Beaulne Museum, open seven days a week from 1 p.m.to 4 p.m.is located at 96 Rue de l’Union in Coaticook.COURTESY The Beaulne Museum presents its new exhibition titled “Covered hands…The Friday, March 12, 2021 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Death Death Death Obituaries Obituaries March 8-12, 2021 Coping with the loss of a loved one while social distancing Editor’s Note: Please consult your local laws and regulations before publishing this story to con?rm its content aligns with mandates currently in place in your city.Coping with the loss of a loved one can be challenging in the best of times, but many people have had to confront such challenges at a time that is unlike any other in modern history.By the start of the second full week of May 2020, the World Health Organization reported that roughly 279,000 people across the globe had died from the novel coronavirus COVID-19.Many of the 215 countries, areas or territories that reported cases of COVID-19 implemented social distancing measures in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus. While such efforts no doubt saved lives, they also left many people without traditional means of grieving their deceased loved ones. For example, in March the Church of England limited the number of people who could attend funerals to immediate family members only, while restrictions on gatherings in the United States made it dif?cult if not impossible for more than 10 people to grieve together in person. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that grief is a normal response to losing a loved one.In addition, the American Psychological Association says that research has shown that social support can help people recover from such losses Though traditional funerals and family gatherings may not be possible as the world responds to the COVID-19 outbreak, those who have lost loved ones can embrace various strategies to cope with their loss even while stay-at- home orders remain in place.· Host calls with family members and friends. The videotelephone and chat service Zoom has helped millions of people stay connected with loved ones while social distancing.Schools and universities even employed the service when in-person classroom sessions were canceled to stop the spread of the virus. The CDC recommends grieving families employ such technology to connect with each other in the wake of a loved one’s death.CONT’D ON PAGE 19 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY creating wills Coping Drafting a last will and testament is an essential component of estate planning.Despite the importance of having a will, a recent survey from AARP found that two out of ?ve Americans over the age of 45 do not have one.Putting wishes down on paper helps avoid unnecessary work and sometimes heartache upon the death of a loved one.Wills allow heirs to act with the decedent’s wishes in mind, and can ensure that assets and possessions will end up in the right hands.Estate planning can be tricky, which is why many people turn to attorneys to get the job done right.Attorneys who specialize in estate planning will no doubt discuss the following topics with their clients.· Assets owned: Make a list of known assets and ?gure out which assets are covered by the will and which will have to be passed on according to other estate laws, such as through joint tenancy on a deed or a living trust. For example, life insurance policies or retirement plan proceeds will be distributed to your named bene?ciaries.A will also can cover other assets, such as photographs, clothing, cars, and jewelry.· Guardianship: Parents’ wills should include a declaration of who they want to become guardians their underage children or dependents.· Pets: Some people prefer to use their will to also dictate guardianship for their pets and to leave money or property to help care for those pets. However, pets do not have the legal capacity to own property, so one shouldn’t gift money directly to pets in a will.· Funeral instructions: Settling probate will not happen until after the funeral. Therefore, funeral wishes in a will often go unnoticed, states the legal advisement resource Find Law.· Executor: An executor is a trusted person who will carry out the terms of the will. This person should be willing to serve and be capable of executing the will.People who die without a valid will become intestate. This means the estate will be settled based on the laws of where that person lived, and a court- appointed administrator will serve in the capacity to transfer property. This administrator will be bound by laws and may make decisions that go against the decedent’s wishes. To avoid this outcome, a will and other estate planning documents are crucial.(Metro Creative) St.Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lennoxville Due to the Covid-19 virus, our seeking support from faith-based organizations or other trusted community leaders and friends. While in-person church services may not be available, many local religious leaders have made themselves available to congregants and even non-congregants who may need help grieving.Local community organizations may have grief counselors available to help people cope with loss.· Take part in an activity that meant something to you and your deceased loved one.The CDC notes that doing something in memory of a loved one can help people cope. For example, plant ?owers in honor of a deceased parent with whom you shared a love of gardening.Confronting the loss of a loved one during the COVID-19 outbreak can be challenging. But families can still overcome this challenge even if they cannot gather together in person.(Metro Creative) CONT’D FROM PAGE 18 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL I always took turns having the family Christmas at our respective houses.Six years ago, it was my turn to be the hostess.I was in the kitchen all morning cooking. As everyone arrived and was going through the buffet line, I noticed no one was taking much food. Some were not even getting a plate.I asked why my daughter wasn’t eating anything. She said she ate too much at my older sister’s earlier.I felt like a train hit me.My sister said she just “ended up” having a brunch at her house for whoever wanted to stop by to pick up extra gifts. It turns out that she had baked a ham, made several casseroles, prepared a big vegetable tray, salads and a few desserts. She had invited our entire family except my husband and me.I was pretty upset and said, “Well if I’d known you were going to have something at noon, we would have just came to your house, too, and I wouldn’t have spent the time all morning cooking and preparing for everyone to come here.” She said, “Well, that’s why I didn’t tell you, because I knew you would be mad.” She didn’t apologize and ended up leaving shortly after by going to get her and my brother-in-law’s coats and waving a Merry Christmas, saying they had to be somewhere and left.My Christmas was ruined. All I can gather is that she moved into a condo earlier in the year and wanted to have everyone for Christmas.Had she asked me if she could’ve hosted Christmas, then I gladly would’ve let her.Since then, I’ve hardly seen my sister. She started “forgetting” my birthdays. She still kept in touch with my daughters, and her husband and daughter have come to my house for get-togethers.But she always says she’s too busy.I’d just like to know what you think about what happened. Was I being overly sensitive about the Christmas meal?Obviously, she never intends to apologize for the disaster, and I’m sure it’s too late now anyway.I just wonder what an outsider would think.- Sidelined Sister Dear Sidelined: Your sister might never apologize, but you can still forgive her.Do it for your own sake.Write a letter expressing how hurt you’ve been by her actions over the last six years. Then write another letter expressing how you love her anyway.Don’t mail either of them.Treat it as a therapeutic exercise, to process your feelings and air frustrations. Then try reaching out to her.Express how you’ve felt sad that she hasn’t been in your life much these past few years and that you’d like to change that.Hopefully, that ice between you two will start to melt. You’re sisters, and it would be a sin to let one holiday meal ruin your relationship for the rest of your life.Dear Annie: This is in response to “Don’t Shoot the Mockingbird,” who was embarrassed that he accidentally mirrored people’s accents during conversation.Anyone with such a gift for mimicking accents should consider studying foreign languages.I study for fun and am hardly an expert, but I have a great time playing with it! I use Duolingo app.I’ve got a good handle on eight languages so far.- Polyglot Dear Polyglot: Que magni?co! The bene?ts go beyond just helping you to communicate with more people.Studies have shown that learning a new language promotes cognitive health in myriad ways, increasing the volume of gray and white matter and enhancing overall brain connectivity. As we age, learning a new language can help keep our working memories in good health.Keep it up.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
