Cutting Anne Rice, 79, “The queen of gothic lit, the maestro of the monstrous and the diva of the devious…” (The Philadelphia Inquirer) has left the world of vampires (for which she is justly famous) and crafted a new series centred on werewolves: The Wolf Gift (2012), Book One, followed by The Wolves of Midwinter (2013).Rice is essentially a master of the modern day fantasy.Unlike two other giants of the science ?ction/fantasy genre, namely Ursula K.Le Guin and Frank Herbert, Rice does not create whole new universes for the reader to explore.Instead, her story-telling makes use of already well-known folk and fairy tales. The legend of the werewolf— a creature, part human part beast —has been around for centuries and popularized in movies.A horrible, evil being that comes out with the full moon and tears apart innocent victims is nightmarish, to say the least, but in Rice’s version the story is quite different. What if, instead of a curse, we see a gift that comes with immortality and a responsibility to sniff out evil, hunt it down and tear it apart? As the depiction of the curse of the werewolf in these two novels is radically transformed, we journey into the creation of the unexpected. As far as I am concerned, the main theme of both books is the journey into selfhood. Our protagonist, Reuben Golding, is young, exceedingly handsome, wealthy and intelligent, a modern-day prince set to be the hero; except, we quickly ?nd out, he is seriously ?awed. The entire Golding family is a study in dysfunction: His mother is a world-class surgeon who treats Rueben as if he were her forever child. His father teaches poetry at Berkeley and is despised by his wife because he is content to live in a world of poetry, unexcited by the realm of science.Jim, Reuben’s older brother, is a reformed alcoholic seeking redemption as a Catholic priest, convinced that, despite his own bitter unhappiness, there exists the possibility of redemption for others.Adding to this fraught family situation, Reuben is engaged to an aspiring district attorney who obviously despises him because of his inability to be successful at anything.Strong women, weak men, unful?lled love—a teaser for the Freudians among you.Reuben is suffering from what the French would call ennui. In other words, he has everything going for him, but nowhere to go because he is not sure who he really is; consequently, he is passionless. He languishes in his job as a newspaper feature writer assigned to do articles focusing on the magni?cent estates of California’s wealthy San Francisco area. However, Reuben’s life is profoundly changed when he is assigned to do an article on the famous Nideck estate.Upon arrival, he meets Marchand Nideck, an older woman of exquisite beauty and charm who wastes no time introducing him to a castle-like mansion ?lled with mystery, set in an old growth forest.A very secluded, enchanted place, not at all what we would expect as the setting for a werewolf lair.Within two days, he is completely bewitched by Marchand, her sensuality, her sexuality, her intelligence. Is he about to become a focussed, happy person? Not quite. As is frequently the case, it is the exigent circumstances in our lives that we must confront ?rst. The change begins when he wakes during the night to a commotion in the kitchen. He ?nds, to his horror, that Marchand has been murdered by her jealous brothers. They, in turn, are being torn apart, devoured by a savage creature that leaps upon Reuben, stares him in the face, and, surprisingly, spares his life. However, he has been bitten, and as the myth would have it, he will also become a werewolf, a mindless, savage creature. But this “curse” comes with a gift of unimaginable consequence.Severely injured, Reuben ?nds himself in hospital, under the care of Grace, his renowned surgeon mother.By all accounts, he should be dead, given the severity of his wounds, and yet he is healing quickly, growing stronger and more self-con?dent with the passage of time.Medical experts, as well as law enforcement agencies and Reuben himself, need to know more about what happened that tragic night. As we might expect, Reuben soon experiences a transformation into a wolf-like creature with amazing strength, and yet in full control of his still-human emotions and intelligence. He is overwhelmed by his capacity to use his senses and speed. He becomes aware that he can, through his new- found sense of smell, detect the presence of evil in humans who are about to commit acts of unspeakable cruelty on the defenseless. His prey are the evildoers of the world, and Reuben acts quickly and without mercy, killing and devouring his enemies. When he leaves the hospital, he returns to become the owner of the Nideck estate, the only place in the world where he wants to be.To his good fortune, he ?nds love with a woman who seduces him in his wolf form, and the retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale is set into motion. In Rice’s version, though, we witness the emergence of a strong woman who has no intention of taming the Beast.Eventually, Marchand’s Uncle Felix, builder of the estate, returns with a band of his fellow travelers. The wolf pack has come home to educate the latest pup.The stage is set.If you want to know how the story unfolds, you must read Book 2, The Wolves of Midwinter. In my opinion, this is just the kind of escapism we need to get us through this dark period in our own reality. In particular, pay careful attention to Rice’s skill in depicting the sensual pleasures of sight, taste and smell. Both books are available at the Bibliothèque Lennoxville Library, along with many of Rice’s other books drawn from her extensive canon of 36 works.Anne Rice loves werewolves PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY Bishop’s and Champlain classes Hospitals at risk Nancy Beattie, campus director at Champlain Lennoxville says that Covid-19 is responsible for this dramatic change.“The pandemic has clearly had an impact on students.INs have provided a measure of relief for students who have tried to get through but for a variety of reasons have not been able to complete their courses successfully.” Beattie added that these reasons include family members who have become ill and a plethora of other concerns exacerbated by COVID-19.She put a positive spin on the large increase in INs.“Were glad to have the IN option, obviously the numbers are somewhat shocking, but that option is there because we recognize the dif?culties students are facing.” This phenomenon did not seem to extend to students of the neighboring Bishop’s University. At Bishop’s one can “withdraw with permission from a course,” which means that they can withdraw from a class after the usual add/drop date without receiving a grade.Students would instead get a “WP” on their transcript.Olivier Bouffard, communications director at Bishop’s said that a “WP’” is Bishop’s closest equivalent to the permanent incompletes requested in droves at Champlain.Contrasting with the Champlain numbers, stats from the Bishop’s University registrar’s of?ce showed that only 12 students exercised the “WP” option last semester (up from two in fall 2019).When it came to dropped classes in general, Bishop’s actually recorded a decrease.Only 2.2 per cent of students dropped a course whatsoever this semester compared to 2.4 per cent in fall 2019.If you’re thinking that this could perhaps be explained away by low enrollment, that was not the case either. The Bishop’s student body had only 25 fewer students last semester compared to the previous fall. The “pass/ fail” system t e m p o r a r i l y implemented at Bishop’s is a likely explanation for at least some of the discrepancy. This optional system was introduced in the 2020 winter semester in the wake of the pandemic. After consultation between student representatives and school administrators it was extended to this past fall as well. The pass/fail option differs from a permanent incomplete as it does not save one from a failing grade and students don’t need a reason to use it.This option let students change any of their numbered ?nal grades that were above the threshold for a pass (generally above 50 per cent) into a simple P on their transcript.A failing number grade could be made an F.This made the class or c lasses selected not count towards the student/s GPA.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 sociaux (INESSS), there is a real risk that Montreal’s health network will exceed capacity over the next three weeks.More than 80 per cent of regular and intensive care beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients. However, the INESSS also pointed out a six per cent decrease in new cases. In a press release, the organization notes the decrease runs through most age groups, with the exception of people 70 years old and over, which saw a ?ve per cent increase. The INESSS also said that 75 per cent of new cases are coming from Montreal residents or neighbouring regions, considered zone 1.The projections are based on data collected up to Jan.10.For other regions, considered zone 2, new hospitalizations are down.Zone 2 shows nearly 60 per cent of regular beds and 30 per cent of intensive care beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients. While the risk of a major increase remains low, the INESSS suggests over?ow in some hospitals cannot be ruled out.Quebecers need to continue respecting health measures, Dubé stressed, in order to avoid a dangerous situation in the health network and for the entire population.Although he added that he is pleased with the rollout of vaccines.“Over the past few weeks, our teams have eloquently demonstrated that Québec is able to vaccinate a large number of people quickly, safely and in an orderly fashion,” said Dubé.The government’s objective is to distribute the vaccines at an optimal pace, the health minister continued, in an effort to reach as many people as possible. But just because the vaccine exists, it doesn’t mean people can become complacent, he warned.“We must remain extremely vigilant and continue to respect the health measures in place,” said Dubé.According to the Quebec government, there were 2,132 new cases, bringing the total to 236,827 people infected with COVID-19.They also reported 64 new deaths, which amounts to a total of 8,878 deaths, as well as seven new hospitalizations, for a total of 1,523.In the Eastern Townships, the CIUSSS de l’Estrie - CHUS reported 95 new cases in the region. They also con?rmed two new deaths — one at the Hôpital et centre d’hébergement Argyll (RLS de Sherbrooke), another at the RPA Les Jardins de Pinecroft (RLS de Memphrémagog). The Townships’ local health authority also updated its website to include the amount of beds occupied by COVID-19 patients. There are 73 con?rmed hospitalizations out of 79 beds dedicated to Covid, and 14 people in intensive care out of 25 available beds.Record Staff The transport ministry (MTQ) has announced that Friday, January 15, 2021 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Uncertainty By Revs Mead Baldwin, Rabbi Boris Dolin Lee Ann Hogle, and Rev.Carole Martignacco 1) Cookies again!?While the memories are quickly fading, my ?rst trips to the supermarket as the pandemic began nearly a year ago were much more of an adventure than I had expected.I stayed away from the carts full of toilet paper, but for some unconscious reason during every trip to the supermarket those ?rst few weeks, I came home with a bag of Doritos and a few boxes of Oreos.Knowing that I am a health nut, and rarely eat anything that even has white ?our in it, my wife expressed surprise (which admittedly over the following weeks, and many more cookies later, became a bit of frustration). With a half eaten cookie in my mouth, my answer was always clear: “You never know what could happen next, so we might as well have some treats!” Thankfully my snack buying habit has calmed down a bit over the past year as we have settled into the new normal. But that immovable sense of doubt is still going strong. Each day the news only makes me more unsure of what is to come.If I was to give a label to the feelings of the past year, to try to encapsulate the experiences, re?ections and memories of this surreal time, of the feeling of separation and fear along with those moments of blessing and hope, among all of the questions, the challenges and the pain, I would probably say uncertainty.Uncertainty about the meaning of these strange times, and even more uncertainty about what the future holds. Now so many months into this pandemic, we all are waiting for some sort of assurance that the next stage of this part of our journey will be something positive.Maybe more good news about vaccines, maybe an assurance that the people of the world have decided to put aside their differences and put their focus on helping each other.Even simple things, like the resumption of live sports with crowds or concerts could at least give us a taste of the world that we only now remember.Yet, no matter how much we are ready for normalcy, this world can only come when it is safe, and therefore we have to wait just a bit more. What can we do in the meantime, while we wait?Keep putting out the kind words and the compassionate actions.Keep reaching out and taking time to care for yourself, even if nothing functions the way it used to.Eat a cookie, and know there will be more to come.Simply do your best.As Leonard Cohen wrote: “Ring the bells that still can ring, forget your perfect offering.” Accept the reality of our broken world, but no matter what, keep moving forward. If we can keep a sense of perspective, we, and our world will be better off when this is all done.2) Although much of life is uncertain and unpredictable we humans have the habit of forgetting this basic tenant. We surround ourselves with schedules and routines, agendas and appointments. When something unexpected happens it can send us into shock, because we take our predictable lives for granted. To be sure routines and consistent behaviour give us a sense of security and this keeps chaos at bay but in troubled times we have to dig deeper to develop resilience in the face of adversity. We are much more than our physical bodies and our world is more than its physical attributes. It often takes a great tragedy to bring that truth to bear. Our relationships with one another and the values we base our lives upon: these are the qualities of life that develop perseverance and give us hope. Here in the West for too long we have been caught up in an economic model that promotes over consumption and extended work hours at the expense of relationships with family and friends. We work so hard at getting ahead we have little time to re?ect on the values our society as a whole is promoting. We are disconnected from the manufacturing processes that undermine the ability of the earth to be self sustaining. When our predictable lives are turned upside down that is the time to reexamine our basic assumptions and make adjustments, listen to what our spirits are saying, make decisions based on our values rather than our comfort, resist the temptation to think only of our personal welfare, love one another as we love ourselves.Jesus said that and for some that may appear to be hopelessly impractical and irrelevant. However if you trust that there is a mysterious thread that connects each human life to another and to the whole of life, as people of faith do, then you can understand that when one of us suffers, we all eventually suffer. So it is in our own self-interest to collaborate to ?nd better ways of doing things.Times of uncertainty show us just how much we need one another.Let us hope we retain the lesson once the current chaos subsides.3) Someone recently asked, “How best can we live in these uncertain times?” My ?rst response was to ask myself, when has it ever been certain?Thankfully the question was rhetorical, posed to our study group at large.Though I didn’t have to make up a comforting answer, which would have probably been fraught with platitudes, I’ve been pondering it seriously ever since.Crystal balls, tea leaves and palm readings aside, a primary condition of life in the here and now is that we none of us can see too far past our noses beyond the present moment.Sometimes I count that a blessing.Beyond making plans and keeping an agenda, I am well aware that the unexpected can and will happen, hasn’t it many times before.Knowing I will need to rise to the occasion, I can right now practice being ?exible.Resolved to live again into the uncertainty that reminds me continually, I am not the one in charge of this world.Journalists keep replaying events and projecting what we might expect.Philosophically, we can explore the past for clues, hoping to learn from history how events might unfold. We do that every turn of the year, as we anticipate and wonder what this new year holds in store.I think this year, 2020 guided by considerably less than perfect vision, many are wisely reluctant to make predictions. It’s as the Polish poet and Nobel laureate Maria Wislawa Szymborska said, “Nothing can ever happen twice…we arrive here improvised and leave without a chance to practice.” This from a woman who lived through and observed horrendous events in the early 20th century and lived to tell us about it.In the midst of uncertainty, survivors of similar turbulent times have much to teach us.This living with uncertainty presents us with a spiritual dilemma. This life is complex, so much that shapes events is unknown or hidden from us.At best we can live with our eyes wide open.Committed to fully inhabit what is, acknowledging it for what we know.At best we can learn to live not out of fear but forward with courage into the unknown.Knowing we have a small but integral part in helping to create what comes next.At best we will do this with some trust in the basic goodness and universal love that beats at the heart of all that is, however at times obscured. At best we can live intentionally, trying to seed our own personal and collective future, with our highest values and aspirations. In the depth of winter, let us be then about tilling and planting; and may we choose only the best seeds.4) Last night the National Hockey League began its season with a game between the Montreal Canadians and the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was tied after regular time, and the Maple Leafs won in overtime. The result was unpredictable, de?nitely uncertain.I am sure than fans all across Canada loved it that way.I have been a sports fan for most of my life.Upsets happen. That’s what makes it fun.Why then, when life is uncertain do we ?nd it so dif?cult? Why are we so often paralyzed into inaction when our normal routines have to change? Why does our anxiety take over?I have a strange quirk. If someone asks me a question; Where is King street?what happened to Mrs.Smith?where can I ?nd eggplant?and I don’t know the answer for sure, I admit it.I don’t try to make up an answer, or pretend I know.I do not have the answer to my questions in the previous paragraph.I’m not sure they have answers.Yesterday I received a great surprise.A 92 year old woman from a congregation I served in Ontario 35 years ago gave me a phone call. Her voice, as usual, sounded young and excited. On an impulse she dialed just to touch base and talk. She is still busy, still driving, missing in person church and long hugs, but still joyous.I had seen her 2 summers ago when I attended church there. We did not talk about the pandemic, just shared news and had a great conversation.Though I couldn’t see her, I could sense the smile on her face. All the anxieties of the day disappeared. We do live in uncertain times. We may not be sure what the future holds.Still, I believe that when we reach out with phone calls, small acts of random kindness, and empathy for each other, we make the world a better place.Where can you bring smiles at him so much and so often that we’ve forgotten to consider what’s going on in our own backyards. It’s become so easy to say, “at least things are better here than in the States,” but looking into the neighbour’s yard doesn’t actually tell you what is going on in your own. When we forgive extreme positions as just being outlying parts of the fabric of society, we ignore the runs and rips that threaten to tear that fabric into pieces. The world has offered plenty of signs that racism, inequality, and prejudice are rampant, systemic issues.Choosing to ignore that or ?ling it away as somebody else’s problem only makes these problems worse.I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume most Canadians were left speechless as we watched a pro- Trump mob storm the Capitol building. This is the ?nale Trump has been building towards for over a year — arguably his entire four-year term.Armed civilians looting and vandalizing one of the so-called pillars of democracy. The image of a man waltzing through the building, waving a confederate ?ag is both striking and utterly terrifying, especially after a summer dominated by Black Lives Matters protests. There is a real and dangerous divide in the United States of America, and nothing could have exempli?ed that fact better than the lack of response from government and police. But don’t get me wrong, we aren’t much better. We are heading down the same path.Just ask the Sipekne’katik First Nation in Nova Scotia how they feel right now.My Take: By Michael Boriero My Take: By Marianne Lasonde What should we call Jan.6?A riot?A protest? An act of terrorism? When it comes to describing violence, language always seems to fall short.I think it may be because these words carry so much weight and we are afraid to use them.Their de?nitions are anchored in some major historical event and any acts that follow just aren’t comparable.Especially when discussing terrorism.Nothing ever seems to be quite scary or violent enough when, in reality, the word simply means an act of violence to incite terror for political reasons. In that case, shouldn’t we call Jan.6 an act of terrorism?Trump supporters storming the Capitol seems like politically-charged violence to me.But describing it as such would force us to look inward and at other acts of terrorism that have never been labelled as such – are we ready for that?My Take: By Matthew McCully My Take: By Taylor McClure Why does an assault on democracy get to be the straw that broke the camel’s back?Society is tripping over Black lives, Indigenous rights and women’s bodies on a daily basis, but disturb the pieces on a rich white man’s chess board and you’ll have hell to pay.Now that we’ve seen what sacri?cing the truth for high ratings and hiding behind the pillars of democracy instead of defending them does, what’s next?I know the focus right now is on an angry mob and an outgoing president, but there are bigger ?sh to fry.The way forward has to start with people owning the role they played in this mess, and we are all complicit.Dismissing dangerous rhetoric as comic relief.Replacing political action with memes and slacktivism.Reducing the acts of a madman to entertainment. And most importantly, putting politics before human lives. When news of the Capitol riots came to light, it sent shockwaves across the globe. An attempted overthrow of democracy of one of the most powerful countries in the world, some have even referred to it as an attempted coup, how could this happen? After four years of Trump sitting on his throne and slowly building his MAGA army, and let’s not forget, perpetuating a state in which racism, sexism, and homophobia ruled all, the real question is: how did this not happen sooner? If we can learn anything from history, it’s that it only takes one leader, one thought, one action to put things in motion. While Capitol Hill was being overrun, Canadians were sitting at home thinking how lucky they are to be here, as if location serves as the basis of an attempted overthrow. It’s time to take off the blind folds.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND belonging and personal importance.DEAR EDITOR, Regarding today’s article in The Record.“A half-century of staying creative to weather the storm”, I was surprised and disappointed that a piece on the historical development of the drama department at Bishop’s University and the Centennial Theatre does not include one mention of the person who was instrumental in the creation of the theatre and was a member of the English and drama faculty for 20 years. That person was of course Arthur J.Motyer.Upon his passing in 2011, Philip Johnston, Class of 1959 and former President of Bishop’s Corporation, wrote: “Bishop’s graduates, faculty, and staff would single out Arthur as their most outstanding teacher, colleague and friend.Delivering the best lectures, bringing to life the plays of Shakespeare and modern playwriting geniuses, teaching the poetry which has helped to make English over the ages a leading language and the prose classics which stir the emotions are just the beginning of Arthur’s contribution to those students on campus during his two decades at Bishop’s.Mounting major productions each and every year consumed an enormous amount of time and energy: Arthur cast not only the acting roles, but identi?ed and persuaded students to ?ll all the supporting positions backstage and front-of-house, then welded theses herds of enthusiastic, if undisciplined young people into teams that precipitated standing ovations from their audiences.Arthur Motyer was a Bishop’s Man.” ANNA M.GRANT CLASS OF 1981 BISHOP’S UNIVERSITY ARCHIVIST American radicals By Kyl Chhatwal Political division. It’s one of the de- ?ning features of our times. That division is much worse in the United States, but here in Canada we aren’t immune to it either.Political divides aren’t inherently bad; they add tension to the politics of a nation. The tug of each side is also meant to prevent the other from spinning off into the extreme territory of its own ideas. But when the connection between these two sides (or multiple sides) is stretched to the point of rupture, little else prevents a descent into radical thinking. And one thing we can say for certain about radicals: they aren’t exactly self- aware.Since the events of Jan.6 in Wash- ington—the most shocking display of extreme domestic ideology and violence on American soil in generations, perhaps centuries—Trump-supporting Republicans have continued, without any apparent irony or shame, to accuse their political opponents of being the true American extremists.“Radical Left” and “Radical Democrats” are familiar rhetorical tics of the current President, who has a thing for self-revealing catchphrases.Yet even after Trump’s own radicalism was on open display on Jan.6, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a stalwart Trump enabler, went on Fox News to rail against “Nancy Pelosi and the Radical Democrats.” He was complaining about their decision to impeach Trump.Yet to accuse Democrats of radicalism in this moment, in the wake of these egregious and Republican-enabled attacks, is, to put it mildly, an extraordinary display of chutzpah.Even Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, one of the few contrite Republicans on the Hill, who has openly called for Trump’s resignation, nonetheless has justi?ed his previous support of the president by complaining about the “radicalizing Democratic party.” Yes, the so-called “Left” side of the political spectrum has come up with its share of nutty and even extreme ideas over the years. But what Jan.6 should have made clear is that the American “Right” has the real radicalism problem. One of the ironies of this radical- ism—and let’s be honest and just call it Trumpism—is that it represents itself as hypermasculine, a movement of Marlborough Men too tough to worry about sissy things like feelings.A popular Trump meme, emblazoned on thousands of T-shirts, even encourages you, rather crudely, to “F- your feelings.” But like WWE wrestling, out of which Trumpism grew, the movement is actually hyperbolic melodrama. It is day-time soap opera, with its easy heroes and villains, and elevation of feeling over almost everything else. Also like wrestling, Trumpism offers an arena where the battling passions of the human heart are encouraged sort out their differences—and ultimately, dominate one another—through staged and ritualized violence. So far, this violence has been limited to boorish chest-thumping at Trump rallies, ALL CAPS RANTS IN NEWSPAPER COMMENT SECTIONS, and Trump’s own Twitter feed. But inevitably, it broke the bounds of ritual, and Capitol Hill was sacked.Another feature of Trump’s radicalism: it offers moral righteousness. The way Trump speaks to his most ardent followers guarantees this.“Patriots” he has called them, even after they rioted. Some of Trump’s most brazen defenders in Congress, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, have even referred to the events of Jan.6 as the Republicans’ “1776 moment.” After being told it was following in the footsteps of George Washington, is it any wonder the mob did what it did?Which brings us to perhaps the most vital feature of any radical movement: its promise of belonging and personal importance.Hours into the Capitol Hill attack, when Trump ?nally deigned to respond to it, he said to his loyal foot soldiers via Facebook video: “We have to have peace. So go home.We love you. You’re very special.” “You’re very special”?Could he have prevented the attack by giving each of the rioters a hug?Nearly twenty years ago, America was assaulted by a foreign band of extremists, who nonetheless bear a striking resemblance to Trump’s homegrown kind. The radical followers of Osama Bin Laden were also morally sure of themselves. They were also told they were special. They also wanted, desperately, to belong to something.Bin Laden’s extremism elevated passion over reason even more effectively and disastrously than Trump’s; and the result, as they say, is history. After 9/11, America conducted a ten- year manhunt to track down the leader and inciter of this radical ideology and violence. This time, the perp is in the Oval Of?ce (at least for another few days). What will America do about it?Will impeachment be enough?Letters PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER professor Jean-Marie Dubois, Université de Sherbrooke Gérard Coté, Lennoxville-Ascot Museum and Historical Society Since 1992, a street in the industrial park of Sherbrooke is named for a Czech scholar who came to Sherbrooke as a refugee and who was not long in leaving his mark among the communities of Sherbrooke and Lennoxville.Oleg Stanek was born in 1921 in Kharbin, Manchuria (China). His father was a Czech diplomat and young Oleg grew up in the trail of his father’s postings in Turkey, Greece and the USSR.In 1939, Oleg earned a BA from the École française in Athens. In 1945, he married Ela Hutarova (1921-2012) in Brno, Czechoslovakia. They had two children, born in Brno: Oleg Jr, a retired mathematics Professor from the Université du Québec à Rimouski, and Jana Stankova, Director of the Molecular immunology laboratory of the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Sherbrooke and adjunct Professor in the Faculté de médecine et des sciences de la santé.In 1949, Oleg Stanek earned a degree in engineering from the Haute école des études économiques in Prague and, in 1952, a doctorate in urban planning from the Université technique of Brno. From 1948 to 1965, he was a university Professor and urban planning researcher in Czechoslovakia. He was also a consultant in the creation of Master Plans for several cities in various places including here in Québec.Because he had resigned from the Communist party, he was prevented from traveling abroad for several years.Eventually, in 1965, he was ?nally sent with his family on a mission to Cuba. There he gave courses in urban planning and regional development at the University of Havana and worked as an urban planning consultant. In May 1970, he was called back to Czechoslovakia. As he feared, his repatriation did not augur well, so when his plane made a stopover in Gander, Newfoundland, he claimed political asylum in Canada for himself and his family. He and his is family lived in Halifax for a time, while he worked as a consultant on a project to establish a common downtown area between Halifax and Dartmouth. And about this time, he continued looking for a permanent job.It was the Geography Department at the Université de Sherbrooke that hired him in August 1970.For the next 13 years, he was a Professor of Urban and Regional Planning. His courses also included quantitative methods and Regional Geography of China and of the USSR.In 1970, he took part in the setting up of the Centre de recherche en aménagement régional (CRAR), that became the Institut d’aménagement in 1982, and in 1985, the Centre d’applications et de recherches en télédétection. At the beginning of the 1970s, Oleg Stanek was an important member of the ESTRAE Project focused on the development of the Estrie Region, which was directed by the Of?ce de plani?cation et de développement du Québec. From 1971 to 1973, he was a member of the Urban Committee to develop the master plan of the City of Sherbrooke. In 1974, he was one of the promoters of the Master of Science degree on the Environment at the Université de Sherbrooke. He also took part in many reports and publications on different urban and land- use subjects including: zones of in?uence of Sherbrooke, norms and regulations for the management of rural municipalities, optimal distribution of school services throughout Estrie municipalities. His most important publications are: 1) Urbanismo (a planning theory of towns), published in Spanish in 1969 in Havana (Cuba); 2) Les pôles de développement et les zones d’in?uence des centres de l’Estrie, published in 1973 in Sherbrooke by CRAR; 3) Guide de gestion du développement territorial des petites municipalités du Québec, published in 1976 by CRAR.He also worked during many years on a multilingual dictionary of terms relating to urban planning and to the building of dwellings. At the time of his death, he had gathered some 70 000 terms, but most unfortunately this dictionary will never be published. From 1981 to 1983, he worked as a consultant for the Corporation du centre-ville de Sherbrooke and for the Comité de rénovation du centre-ville de Magog.Professor Stanek was a member of many professional associations including: the Czech Science Workers Association (1955-1970), the Architects Association of Czechoslovakia (1955- 1970), the Urban Planning Commission of the International Union of Architects (1955-1970), the American Urban Planning Association, the Canadian Urban Planning Association ant the Corporation des urbanistes du Québec.Incidentally, Professor Stanek was ?uent in 12 languages: French, English, Spanish, Russian, Czech, Polish, Italian, German, Swedish, Portuguese, Bulgarian and Serb-Croat.Oleg Stanek died suddenly in 1983 at his home in Lennoxville. One day, his ashes and those of his wife will be scattered by his children in the Czech Republic. It will be in Zelená Hora, not far from his native town of Ela Hutarova, in a meadow near the Catholic Church of John of Nepomuk (Kostel svatého Jana Nepomuckého), a historical pilgrimage monument dating from 1720.Oleg Stanek Wedding of Oleg and Ela.JEAN-MARIE-DUBOIS COLLECTION, SHERBROOKE founding member of the Desert Heat Band, Tetreault agreed to tell us about his musical career and the paths that took him there. He was born in Granby, Quebec but he spent years growing up in Southern Ontario. He recalls being only a casual fan of music as a child. His af?nity for music would come a little later.“I absolutely loved Elvis Presley and many songs from the Beatles that my Dad, Donald Tetreault, would listen to, but I never had any dreams of becoming a musician myself. When my father remarried, this is when I was introduced to “live” music because my step-mother, Maxine Boomhower was an incredible singer. She could play guitar, and piano, and she had a very strong voice as a country singer,” he speci?ed in an interview.Youth makes us rather receptive to new and different things and for Tetreault, this is how it happened.“I was in awe when her band would have band practices in our basement. After they were ?nished, me and my step-brother, Lee Gardner, sometimes my step-sister Maiesa Gardner, and my younger brother Luke Tetreault, we would pretend to be in a band, and I would set up pillows around me like a pretend drum-set,” he explained.Sometimes though, just wanting is not enough, there has to be an additional trigger to provide the determination necessary to make it a reality. In his case, Maxine Boomhower would be the one to bring the missing element that would con?rm to the teenager the relevance of his musical quest.“One day, my step-mom explained to me how to count “counter-point” and it really sparked something in me….It was a hard musical concept (for a kid) that I understood, and I immediately grasped the notion, that if I could count it, I could keep the beat for real,” he recalled.“My parents bought me an old hi-hat stand with a snare stand and a snare drum with drum sticks, from a garage- sale, and I started hitting things, keeping beat with songs.I eventually got the chance to get behind a real drum-set during one of my Mom’s band practices,” he added.Soon his step-mother invited him up on stage with her for a few songs, and then eventually a full set.His parents bought him a drum-set and he became the drummer for her and her bandmates.Tetreault was still very under-age, so he was only allowed in the club during the sets.He had to wait outside during the breaks. He remembers that his dad would bring him a cold Coca-Cola between sets.At one point his family moved back to Quebec where his life would take a new turn.CONT’D ON PAGE has a vivid memory of how Tetreault was committed to their new band.“He wanted our band to be successful so bad, he used to hitch hike to practice for years, sunshine, rain or snow and freezing cold,” explained Brunton about his friend’s work ethic. Both Brunton brothers have a special bond with the musician and to this day, nothing has changed.Just talking about it still makes them laugh.“He will always be one of my other brothers.Me and Trev developed stomach muscles over many years, just by how much Jarrod has made us laugh. There is nobody else who has ever entertained us more, and sometimes just by doing nothing. You can just look at him and start laughing because you know so well he’s going to do or say something that will have us crying in laughter at any point. And it’s even funnier when he’s not trying to make us laugh, he’s just truly complete entertainment. He’s John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles, he’s Johnny Knoxville in Jackass, and he’s Rikki Rocket from Poison. He will also do anything to help anyone out if he can, that’s him,” Tim Brunton said of their relationship with Tetreault. The artist recalled that they would practice, and enter contests, like Battle of the Bands. He said they were also very lucky to have had such a talented bunch of musicians around the Eastern Townships with groups like “The Bolton Brothers” and “Doll Haus” and “Beyond” and “Mannix” and the different groups that he was always playing in.“We were also so very lucky to have met musicians who took us under their wings and taught us what they could about the music business; whether that was our introduction to studio recording, or learning the ropes of “show-pacing” for live performances. We got to learn these things from industry professionals like Vermont’s Wayne Warner and Jamie- Lee Thurston, both of whom have legit careers in Nashville, TN, and both of whom are like big brothers to us,” he said.“And one of our biggest in?uences who hasn’t received enough credit for helping to steer our ship was the father of Tim and Trevor Brunton, Mr Richard Brunton, who had a nose for business and marketing,” he mentioned with a lot of gratitude. The funny thing in this story is that Tetreault ended up switching instruments after honing his skills as a drummer for all those years. He ?nally traded his set of drums for a rhythm guitar.“I was always interested in writing material.I love to work out the intricate parts to a song. When we were young, we jammed on a lot of song ideas, but I was always wary of repetitive chord structures (Rolling Stones “Satisfaction” or any four- chord repeater).I just enjoyed working out the “sonic-puzzle” of a song, and I ended up working very well with Trevor Brunton. We became a strong song writing team,” explained the gifted songwriter.Music for the family man has been pushed on the back burner for now.Although he still enjoys music, he hasn’t been very active musically. He was playing for fun with Robin Wilkinson (the Desert Heat bassist) and his neighbour Karl Garz. They formed an acoustic trio heavy on “vocal harmony”, then Charles Barbeaux, an amazing pianist joined them.He helped to orchestrate their harmonies, but eventually they stopped doing that to focus more on their regular work.“Lately, I rarely pick up my guitar. In fact, my 16 year old daughter, Hannah plays on it more than I do.My other daughter Grace, is 15, and is in performing arts at Galt, they are my daughters, for sure,” he said with pride. He found other ways to stay creative. He was a camera-man for a Sherbrooke Wrestling Association for 4 years, so he got into photography as a hobby and said that he enjoys learning about lighting for cinematic effect.“I work in marketing & advertising as a profession, currently managing Google accounts for Yellow Pages.Last year, I discovered that I really enjoy distance running 5 to 10 km.Once I ran 15 km.I’ve never competed in any marathons yet, but I might get there one day.Sometimes when I’m running, I just turn off my playlist, clear my head, and write to the beat of my steps.I still have songs in me, so who knows what is in the future,” he said to end the interview. In his case, music is part of his DNA so it wouldn’t surprise me if eventually I would hear that he started a band with his daughter.Who knows?Life is sometimes ?lled with surprises, just like that! Symphony Orchestra (OSS-Orchestre symphonique de Sherbrooke) will broadcast its next three concerts in the BMO Great Concerts Series on the orchestra’s website.“Although public health measures related to the pandemic remain restrictive to ensure everyone’s safety, concert recordings remain authorized, to our great relief,” explained Vincent Cloutier, President of the OSS in a press release.“We will thus be able to offer the public great moments, maintain ties with our audience by offering them quality programming in the form of webcasts, and this will allow OSS musicians to perform and demonstrate their great talent,” he added.OSS Executive Director Nicolas Bélanger pointed out that the virtual broadcast of a Christmas concert on Dec.12, in collaboration with the City of Sherbrooke, proved a successful alternative success to live performances while awaiting a return to the concert hall.“More than 16,200 clicks were made to watch the concert in just three hours, during which time the video was available on the City’s website.Counting an average of two people per screen, we can easily estimate that more than 32,000 people were able to view it,” Bélanger said. The three upcoming concerts will be recorded beforehand at Sherbrooke’s Salle Maurice-O’Bready and then broadcast on the OSS website, free of charge. Each concert will be left online for a period of three days to offer the public a larger viewing window.“Thanks to the support of partners associated with each of these concerts, we will be able to defray a portion of the costs associated with the recordings and broadcast them free of charge to the public, as well as to make up for the losses caused by the lack of ticket sales,” explained Cloutier. The public will also be invited, if they wish, to make a voluntary contribution in the form of a donation to support the OSS during this dif?cult period.“These voluntary contributions will be valuable as they will help our organisation to continue its activities over the coming months,” added the president. The OSS pointed out that, should the concert halls reopen by the end of March, it would then be possible to offer a hybrid formula for these concerts, i.e.indoors and webcasting.Between now and the end of March, OSS artistic director and conductor Stéphane Laforest is proposing three major concerts that will move audiences: MENDELSSOHN: Musical Pearls with guest violinist Kerson Leong.Webcast dates: Jan.30 to February 1 BEETHOVEN: Salov & Beethoven with guest pianist Serhiy Salov.Webcast dates: Feb.27 to March 1.GOUNOD & SAINT-SAËNS: Romance and cello with guest cellist Stéphane Tétreault.Webcast dates: March 20-22.“I had a great pleasure in programming these three concerts.Although I had to choose works according to the number of musicians who could be on the same stage according to health regulations, the audience will be treated to beautiful symphonies with uplifting, joyful and romantic melodies.A repertoire that I particularly appreciate. We haven’t had the opportunity to play Mendelssohn’s works often since I joined the OSS more than 20 years ago.It is a ?amboyant and melodic music, appreciated by the musicians who have to play it.There will of course be a Beethoven concert, which always pleases the public, to end with a concert of works by two great French composers, Gounod and Saint-Saëns.The soloists invited to perform the concertos are great friends of the OSS.Canadian violinist Kerson Leong, Quebec pianist Serhiy Salov and Quebec cellist Stéphane Tétreault all have enviable international careers,” explained Stéphane Laforest.“While we look forward to returning to the concert hall to reunite with our audience, these free webcast concerts will allow those less familiar with the OSS to discover the talents of their orchestra and the beauty of classical music.Perhaps this will attract new faces to the concert hall when we are allowed to return,” added Maestro Laforest. The OSS credited its valued partners: BMO Financial Group, Canimex Group, Hydro-Québec, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Sherbrooke and the J.A.DeSève Foundation for their loyal support, which enables the Orchestra to maintain and develop its activities.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED JANUARY 15, 2021 Dear Annie: I am a 36-year-old man living with my father.I also have autism, and because of this, I have had dif?culty in dating women. For a few years, I was on the dating website called I Love Your Accent (I had been on 10 other sites prior to that), which matches American and British singles, but nothing happened. Then, last fall, I downloaded the app UK Social and became friends with a British girl from Birmingham. As it turned out, she was not trustworthy. She asked for money, and I had to end the conversation. My mother got upset and intervened. Now I am starting a relationship with a girl around here named “Erin.” There is a problem: She is somewhat nerdy and has the same condition I have. What should I do?Should I wait for the ideal girl to come around or stay with Erin and see what happens?- Ethan in Hanover Dear Ethan in Hanover: There’s no such thing as an ideal girl. There is only a girl who is ideal - or close enough to ideal - for you.Don’t dismiss Erin simply because she’s “nerdy.” If she’s a nerd, that just means she has interests she’s passionate about.Strong interests make people interesting. And if you both have autism spectrum disorders, you might ?nd that you understand each other in a unique way.I say give it a try.You don’t need to make any major decisions right away, but go on some more dates with Erin and see how you two get along.Good luck.Dear Annie: Recently, you printed a letter from “Betty,” who wrote about the death of a friend and how she was treated by family.I loved her suggestions regarding caring for the dying.Back in 2013, my 92-year-old mother went downhill in a hurry. We called in the angels from hospice, and they talked us into using a hospital bed in a second bedroom.Even though I wished there were some way for her to continue sleeping with my dad, she became too fragile to move. The day we were warned that her struggle was not to last very long, my dad and I took up a vigil. Most of the time, we were both with her, praying the rosary and talking softly to her, reminiscing about happy times.Shortly after midnight, I needed to take a break and went into the living room with the nurse. Not ?ve minutes later, I heard my dad’s chair creak, and by the time I got to the doorway, he was kissing her goodbye. He passed me without a word and went to bed.I sincerely believe she was waiting until she could be alone with him before letting go.When my dad and I had a chance to talk about it much later, he agreed that he was happy to have had alone time with her.I thought he needed my presence to bring him comfort.I think I should have given him more alone time with her. They had been married for over 73 years, and except for during World War II, they had very rarely spent bedtime away from each other.- Fortunate Daughter Dear Fortunate Daughter: I believe your letter will touch many hearts, as it certainly touched mine.Thank you for writing. To ?nd out more about Annie Lane and read features by other Creators Syndicate columnists and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate website at
