Monday, Thanksgiving, has proven a great success, and it is safe to say that what was yesterday an innava- tion and an experiment, will become in the future a permanent custom and an established fact. For some years past there has been | more or less agitation for a change in ‘the day for Thanksgiving from Thursday to Monday. It was hard to break away from the old day for Thanksgiving which had prevailed since the custom was first established. The change of the day to Monday, however, offers the great attraction of Sunday and a holiday together.Trains Saturday were crowded, deed overcrowded, with people to.spend the holidays with friends.Yesterday’s ‘trains were quite as crowded with the returning excursionists.Monday Thanksgiving, it is safe to say, has proven a most popular innovation.QUIET DAY AT SHERBROOKE.Thanksgiving Day was quietly celebrated in Sherbrooke and vicinity. It is essentially a home day, a day when as many as possible of the scattered members of the family return to the parental roof, and give thanks: im a multitude of ways for the good things that have come to them during the year.’ As the weather was un-: commongly mild for the season, there was much driving and motoring, the roads being in as good condition as at any time during the summer. The football match at Lennoxville, and the basket ball game at the Y.M.C.A.attracted’ the athletic portion -of .the cœnmunity, and the St.Francis Golf Links was by no means deserted, a number of enthusiasts spending the entire day in the favorite game, and lunchihg at the Club House.Co Flags were ficating from the public buildings, and many private dwellings, for it was the 67th birthday of our Gracious King, Edward the Seventh, whom his Canadian subjects delight to honor.’ : ORIGIN OF THANKSGIVING.The Civil Thanksgiving Day was or- iginälly an American festival, and bas been observed in the United States for two hundred and eighty-seven years, being first instituted in 1621, the year Ce the landing of the Mayflower.in- going anada has also the Harvest Home Festival, which has come to her from the.Mother Country, &nd is celebrated at different periods during the autumn by leach church and congregation, in its own way.It is therefore, quite distinct from the Civil Thanksgiving Day, which is a national holiday. We, in Canada, have much cause to be grateful to the Giver of All Good for numberless blessings, so with thankfulness for the past and hope for the future we pray” ‘‘that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety.may flourish amongst us to all generations.” KING'S BIRTHDAY HONORS.London, November 10.—The King’s Birthday honors announced Saturday evening include the must apply as individu- uals, and the mills will be run as “open.” The conference was held at ‘retary O'Connor was argued before Judges ' > 1 duties on Oct.he | Albany between President Carey, Sec- and representatives of the locals which make up the International Brotherhood, and it was decided to call the strike off with the agreement of September 24 as the basis.oo The men struck THANKSGIVING [THE LENKORVILE MUSICAL 108.First Concert of the Season Held Last Night.OUTLOOK FOR THE YEAR IS EX: CEEDINGLY BRIGHT — CONCERTS WILL BE HELD .MONTHLY.The dpening concert of this successful club, now entening on its eigthth season, was a pronounced success, and in spite of its being Thanksgiving day, there were few empty chairs. The special attraction was the Hubbard-Dudley Orchestra, Messrs.LeBaron, Stone, Parker, Bartlett and Frank Dudley, leader and solo violinist. The numbers given by this strong combination were exceptionally well rendered, particularly the selection from ‘‘Martha,” Loliengrin, while special mention should be made of the artistic phrasing of Rubinstein’s Melody in F.The vocalist on this occasion was Miss Hubbard, who is alike well known in Lennoxville and Sherbrooke, her imel- low mezzo soprano being heard to great advantage in Florence ‘Aly.ward’s popular song, ‘Beloved, it is Morn,” and later in the programme she contributed two songs, ‘Without Thee" and ‘Dream in the Twilight,” both of which were rendered in a most artistic manner.Miss Hubbard's reappearance at these concerts will be looked forward to with great pleasure.Mr.Frank Dudley’s violin playing well sustainéd the reputation he has so quickly earned for himself in Sher brooke, His choice of solos fell upon “Adagia Religioso’’ by J.Henri, and a Mazurka by Wieniawski, the first number being played with preat breadth of tone and artistic inspira- tic, whilst the latter was dashed of with great verve abandon. In response to a demand for more Mr, = Dudley gave the increasingly popular ‘’Humor- eske’’ hy Dvorak, with great taste.Mr.Dudley gave himself a difficult task] in the dramatic recitation, “The Story of the Faithful Soul.” but he did | the greatest possible to the beautiful poem, assistance being lent at the piano by Prof.Stone, who ably acted as accompanist during the evening, The seventh season of the Lennox- ville Musical Club was one of the most prosperous-in its history. There was a large increase in the number of members, the membership list now being t#Wo hundred and fifty names, almost seventy more than last year. The] concents were always well attended, the hall generally being crowded to the doors.” ‘The usual number of concerts, ten during the season, were giv- opportunity of listening to any professionals, the programmes compare favorably with those of former years, in most cases being quite above the average. As usual we are indebted to the musical people of Sherbrooke and other places for their help, and while it is impossible to thank each one in- should be made of Professor 18 tion Bourgeault, who kindly brought juvenile orchestra to play for us.One of the aims af the Musical Club and one in which it has perhaps been least successful, has been to encourage young performers, and.we would again urge the many young students of music who are members of the club, ta teke part in the concerts.1t also seems regrettable that where there is so much splendid matevial- for choral work, more should nat - be done, and we hope that this year more may be done iñ that direction. The members of the committee for the past year were: Hon.Mrs.Ayl- mer, Mrs.Frith, Mrs.Parrock, Mrs.McKindsey, Mrs.McMurray, Mrs.Abbott, Mrs.Ward, Mrs.Mitchell, Mrs.‘Thomas, Miss Gill, Miss Taylor, Miss Demers, Miss Orr, Mrs.Foss.Of these we much regret losing Mrs.Newton Mitchell, who has left Sherbrooke ond who has been an interested worker since the club was formed.Great regret is also felt that Mrs.Ward is no longer on the committee. The following ladies have been elected members of the committee: Mrs.Lucke, Mrs.Williams and Mrs.Irvine.= The treasurer reports receipts for last year, $148.18 ; expenditure, $121.- 18 ; balance in hand, .$27.—_— - FORDYCE CORNER.Moving is the order of the day not been, by the Fall bereft of the power of choosing good from evil, He exemplified this by the instances of Elijah’s challenge.to the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel to see which Deity would break the drought, and has completed his challenge with the exhortation to the Jews of that day to ‘choose ye whom ye shall serve,” if Baal be omnipotent then they were to fdllow him; if God, then were to follow Him.Another instance had been the fatal choice of the Jews of 1900 years ago, when they chose that Barrabas should be delivered unto them as a freed man rather than that Christ should be delivered to them, free. The imprecation which they had asked upon their own heads and upon those of their children that ‘His bldod be upon us and upon our children’’ had been only too fully carried out.The speaker very completely refuted the arguments in fav of fore-ordination, stating that it: amounted to an imputation of evil upon God to make out that He creates
