= “Our first stop.of importance was at Sault Ste.Marie where we visited ‘the celebrated steel plant and saw how steel rails were made, and after a day jin the Twin Cities of St.Paul and in North Dakota we reached Winnipeg the Giant City of the West. This city is certainly worthy of all that has been said of it and is making wonderful strides both in population and business. The CaP.R.has just co pleted a large _and palatial hotel, “The Royal Alexandra,” and tourists from all over the world are loud in its praises.A short distance from Winnipeg is Brandon, one of the most beautifully situated towns in the West and noted us a wheat centre.Among other attractions it has a Y.M.L, A building which cost $50,000, and _ tii population is only about one-half that of Sherbrooke.: One.night was.spent in each of the towns of Regina.and Medicine Hat, and so great was the rush of settlers and tourists that great difficulty was experienced in obtaining hotel accommodation. The amount of building going on in Regina was most surprising. The Health Department had just completed the cleaning out of the water reservoir and it was reported that among other things found were the body of a man, several pigs, dogs, etc.As a consequence we drank no watef in that section. In this town we met the man who claimed the honor of having captured the South Alri- can dog, “Casey,” at present owned by Dr.A.N.Worthington.In Calgary we met several Sherbrooke people, among others being Mr.John McNicol and RR.A.Darker.Nearly 200 miles north of Calgary lies the rapidly | growing town of Edmonton, where we; found quite a large colony of Sherbrooke people. The first to greet us was Mr.F.E.Ibbotson, who is- assistant manager of the leading hotel in the town, Mr.J nn McIntosh is en- aged in a most successful real estate usinéss, and so popular has he become with the_citizens that he promia- es to occupy .in Edmonton the same place as did his late respected father in Sherbrooke, Under the administration of Chief R.-€.Davidson the Edmonton Fire Department- has been reorganized and placed on a most up- to-date footing.Considerable new ap- rigged out in new uniforms, and ag: ing from the discipline and order whith: prevailed the new chief has not only 4 gained ‘the respect of the men, but of lv.A nrost successful career is predicted for our late townsman in his new sphere, .Dr.Smith has got nicely settled” and is already enjoying a very lucrative practice. He is just as enthusiastic over his newly adopted home as the oldest settler.“Shortly after leaving Calgary we camo in view of the Canadian Rockies and me-le short stops at Banff, Luke Louise and Glacier. The scenery at these points and in fact all along the C.P.R.irom Calgary to Vancouver 1s simply - indescribable. The hotel accommodation afforded by the C.P.R.was of a high order and without exception.was taxed to its utmost copa- city all through the mountains.Three days were—spent in Vancouver, a city which impressed us very favorably.Strenuous efforts are being made to raise -its population from 50,000 to 100,000 by 1910.Its admirable harbor, its delightful climate all the year round, and many other advantages easy. Many familiar faces were seen and all were much interested in hearing of Sherbrooke and its progress, A short sail on the palatial ‘Princess Victoria,” brought us to Victoria und “on the following day the same stéam- er lunded us in Seattle, Wash, “We have always looked upon Sherbrooke as a hilly place, but compared to Seattle, Sherbrooke is a level plain.St « -after street.is laid out high up on .ae hillsides and the street cars run “up the steep incline with apparently no effort. The population of this city has doubled within the last few years.“From Seattle we went to Tacoma, Wash, l’ortland, Or., Sacramento, Cal., and reached the ill-fated- city of WENT TO COAST .BY CANADIAN INNOCENT VICTIMS WERE COM- Minneapolis and two days with friends | paratus has been installed, the firemen DELIV the Town Council and citizens general- filled.14.should make.this task comparatively | |COSSACKS BEAT 23 PEASANT, ~ Cruelty.1 _ ' OTHER, WHEN SOLDIERS _ | WERE TIRED, .“ Kherson, Oct._2.—Ninet -seven pea- cre tried here yesterday on the of having devastated ‘the estate of M.Krivoshein, ex-minister of railways, © Sixty-three were sentenced while thirty-four or TO FLOG EACH ‘horrible atrocities committed by the authorities upon the accused.” The chief of the district, accompanied by Cossacks, reached the estate soon after the devastation, All the peasants ground at once’ were gathered o investigation was made.“The ‘ vited priests to administer the last sacrament to the prisoners, and then.jordered the Cossacks to beat them all to death, The butchery lasted for four hours.Twenty-three peasants were killed and 130 were mutilated, ‘The Cossacks, ut, compelled the peasants to continue flogging each other, and men ‘had to beat their own brothers, sons and fathers, The victims of this slaughter were innocent, those really: guilty having escaped by flight. In spite of these revelations, the court.found sentences as related above, LAND TO THE PEASANTRY, _8t, Petersburg, Oct.2.—The final step tq set in action the machinery of the Government’s plan for the distribution |of land to the peasantry was taken Sunday by the publication of ‘Volumipous regulations to the local commissions, under which the ‘the fixing of conditions of sale. They are charged also with arrangements for emigration. The acreage in Last- ern Russia and on -the Siberian steppes surrendered by the Emperor will be sold on very easy terms. The price is less than $2 an acre, and payments are spread over 50 years.~ The commissions hope that the distribution of land will minimize” the autumn agrarian disorders, which already HISTORICAL ADDRESS then thoroughly | | ARM cav DAILY NEWS SPECIALS FROM ALL .PARTS OF THE EASTERN TOWNSHIPS.| .a MR.JUSTICE LYNCH, Knowlton, Oct.2, — (Specinl)— Sunday being the occasion of .J udge “Lynch’s bit day, the Judge and Mrs.Lynch ent rtained quite a large num- | ber of relatives to dinner at the Lake View House. All join in wishing His Lordship any happy returns of the a * ROXTON MAN KILLED AT ST LE.Roxt NOIRE FAIR.L -
