civilized China (equity and fairness, rich culture, high morals); harmonious China (amity among diverse classes and social segments); beautiful China (healthy environment, low pollution, attractive cities, innovative arts).” Underlying this vision, the dream of a China reassuming its ancient glory.“Not so fast”, said Yan Lianke, in response to these roseate declarations, and sat down and wrote The Day the Sun Died. You will recall from a previous review (Dream of Ding Village) that Yan Lianke is a contemporary Chinese writer who is a thorn in the side of the Communist government. He began his writing career in the late 70s with works which gained positive recognition in China and abroad. But as the years have gone by his criticism of the Communist government and the general direction of Chinese society has become increasingly strident. He is no longer able to publish in mainland China, and his works are dif?cult to come by for many Chinese nationals. The Day the Sun Died in an in-your- face deconstruction of the above-men- tioned Chinese Dream. The story gives an hour-by-hour account of a town, Gaotian, whose inhabitants without any warning succumb to a bizarre somnambulism. It is 5 o’clock on a June afternoon and the innocent, slow-witted, 14-year-old narrator Niannian observes this strange af?iction begin to take hold.As the hours go by (the entirety of the action takes place within 24 hours) we see more and more disturbing effects of this sleepwalking.Among some of the inhabitants, it is fairly benign— they might suddenly be taken by the urge to go and harvest wheat.Others fall into a nearby canal and drown.Others are possessed by the desire to right old wrongs, or to steal things, to rape, or to smash in doors.or skulls.Things rapidly escalate until there are violent pitched battles between different factions of villagers, or between villagers and outside invaders who are coming to take advantage of the sleepwalking inhabitants. In the chaos, various demagogues emerge, promising alternatively a return to an earthly paradise.or to a feudal meritocracy.or to a brave new egalitarian world.Niannian and his mother and father are swept up in events, but for the most part try to stay out of the way of the rabid swarms.AS if things weren’t bad enough, weather reports announce a dense fog/cloud cover which will effectively blot out the sun.So no light will come to bring an end to the zombie madness.Caveat lector! This is a grim read.In fact, it seems Yan Lianke’s darkest work to date. This is evident in the back stories that emerge as the minutes tick by; very few of the characters end up in a favourable light.Niannian’s father, Li Tianbao, supplements his income by informing on neighbours who bury their dead according to tradition instead of giving up the bodies for cremation in accordance with new state regulations.(As is usual with Yan Lianke’s works, there is a factual basis for this story line!) Cremation squads descend on illegal graves, dynamiting the sites and putting the torch to scattered remains.Tianbao’s brother-in-law operates a crematorium and has a side business selling corpse oil extracted from the incinerating remains. The author himself appears in a kind of Hitchcockian cam- eo—vague, feeble, lacking inspiration, and trying in vain to document the unfolding tragedy. The impact of the story is heightened by Yan’s style. The language is in- cantatory—an idea is partly expressed, then reformulated, and then the same phrasing echoes and re-echoes in subsequent pages. But critical details keep shifting as if the narrator is speaking in a trance.Spatial details are also confused, and time and distance accor- dions—expanding and compressing, again, as in a dream. All the settings are dark, dimly lit, suffused with smells of sweat, blood, and smoke. And the sounds of running feet, screams, angry yells, desperate calls, make up the auditory backdrop.(Yan Lianke came of age at the height of the cultural revolution, and some of the scenes seem to be drawn directly from those turbulent times.) There ain’t much subtlety in Yan’s messaging: Li Jinping’s “Chinese Dream” glosses over a nightmare of social discontent and disfunctionality. This is a dog-eat-dog world where the main challenge is to detect the shifting winds of policy change, to exploit arbitrary top-down edicts for sel?sh ends, and then evade moral consequences. The unique agrarian-intellectual-mor- al mix of traditional Chinese society is perverted by a political organization and power structure which sti?es dissent, while favouring opportunism, subjugation, and inequality. The “Chinese Dream” seems all the more remarkable as a construct as we hear about Hong Kong democracy riots, Corona-virus cover-ups, arbitrary imprisonment of Canadian nationals, the hyper-surveillance of Chinese citizens, and as we sense the sheer impact of China’s presence as a new superpower.Yan Lianke’s work speaks to our times. The Day the Sun Died is coming soon to the Lennoxville Library.—Stephen Sheeran The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, March 6, 2020 Page 3 Local News It’s all thanks to a supportive community like the Eastern Townships that this FROM PAGE 1 According to those in attendance at yesterday’s grand opening, Grace village is the ?rst private senior’s residence in Quebec to receive their very own dental clinic.“It’s very unique,” said David Price, President of Dixville Home Foundation.“I don’t know of another senior’s residence in Quebec, at least in long term care, that has a dental clinic within its walls and that’s very special.” It’s all thanks to a supportive community like the Eastern Townships that this dental clinic was made a reality.“It’s a big day in the life of Grace Village and one that we have been looking forward to for a while,” said Doug Bowker, Director at Grace Village.Much of the equipment installed in the dental clinic came from the Dix- ville Home. After the Dixville Home stopped functioning as a residence, they donated the dental equipment that they were no longer using considering it was in excellent condition. The clinic will eventually receive a ceiling track that will help residents who are wheelchair bound to get out from their wheelchair into the dentist chair and vice versa.Grace Village also received a generous donation from the Bannerman Foundation.“Grace Village didn’t pay a cent,” emphasized Bowker.“it was entirely paid for by a donor.” Of course, to have a dental clinic, you need to have a dentist and hygienist. That’s when Clinique dentaire Simon Roy stepped in to offer their services.“It was truly a team effort and there are a lot of players involved,” explained Bowker. The bene?ts this new dental clinic will have for seniors at Grace Village are unmeasurable.“Dental hygiene is part of holistic care,” explained Sandra Klinck, Director of Care and a registered nurse at Grace Village.“Good oral hygiene prevents other diseases and maintains one’s activities of daily living, more particularly eating well. The two big things are prevention and maintenance.” Eventually, each resident will have their own individual plans that will help evaluate their daily hygiene improvement. These plans play an important role in the promotion of good health and a sense of well-being.Having access to a dental clinic right on site at Grace Village also relieves a major source of stress for some seniors as getting to a dentist can be challenging and almost impossible.“It can be challenging for those with mobility issues and cognitive problems,” added Klinck.“They are dependent on someone to pick them up and to bring them to the dental clinic.By having one here, they can bring someone they know with them. They know them so it can be a source of comfort. They have a sense of relief knowing they won’t have to leave to see a dentist,” said Klinck.“Think of the reduction of stress in not having to go out,” emphasized Price.“You know it can be dif?cult for someone with Alzheimer’s who may not necessarily know where they are going and they’re also going to experience a bit of pain.” While Simon Roy has his own dental clinic in Lennoxville, offering his services to Grace Village was a no brainer.“It just makes sense brining care to the people that need it,” said Roy.“It’s dif?- cult for them to come to the of?ce and it’s dif?cult for us to do house calls because of the lack of equipment but here everything is mixed together so it’s perfect.” Working in Lennoxville for many years, Roy is already familiar with many of the residents at Grace Village and hopes to provide the best care possible with the help of his assistant and a hygienist.“We hope to reserve a day for it,” explained Roy.“We don’t know the exact frequency yet but we do plan to come here on a regular basis and offer as full of a dental service as possible.” Residents seem to agree that the dental clinic was a positive step in the right direction.“I think it’s just wonderful,” said Ada Hicks, one of the ?rst residents at Grace Village.“It’s wonderful for people who don’t have a dentist or for someone that needs something quick to be done to their teeth. The people here who have Dr.Roy can go here instead of going to Lennoxville.” For Hicks, the dental clinic is just another example as to why Grace Village is the place to be.“People who haven’t been here just don’t know what a wonderful place it is.” Grace Village Granby children found in deplorable conditions Record Staff Following media reports of a serious case of negligence in Gran- by, Lional Carmant, Minister of Health and Social Services, ordered that Youth Protective Services (DPJ) of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS be put under trusteeship yesterday.According to a Report from Radio Canada, a complaint was ?led in February of 2019 regarding four children between 5 and 11 years old living in horri?c conditions in an apartment in Granby. It took ?ve months before someone from the DPJ investigated the case. The initial decision was that the children should remain in the home, which had no electricity, and there were 12 dogs-three adult, nine puppies- living there, defecating on the ?oor regularly. The children were apparently sleeping several to a bed on dirty mattresses with no sheets, surrounded by dirty dishes, some covered with mold.It wasn’t until November when an inspector from the local ?re department visited the home and pointed out the unsanitary conditions and the ?re hazard from extension cords running from a neighbour to provide electricity to the home that the DPJ recommended the children be remanded to foster care.“It’s been a year that I’ve been working to improve the situation,” commented Lional Carmant, Minister of Health and Social Services in a TVA interview yesterday.“Things haven’t improved.” The DPJ has been under a microscope since the death of a young girl in Granby last year despite the fact that numerous complaints had been ?led.According to Carmant, the health ministry had appointed a supervisor to assist with structural changes and new hires in the department to improve services.Following the new report of neglect that surfaced yesterday, Carmant decided to put the DPJ under trusteeship. He did not specify a timeline.Estrie youth protection services put under trusteeship Page 4 Friday, March 6, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Impermanence By Revs Mead Baldwin, Rabbi Boris Dolin Lee Ann Hogle, and Rev.Carole Martignacco 1) Our word today is impermanence, the state of being that is transient and does not last forever.A few weeks ago the gospel reading was the story of Jesus with three of his followers on a mountaintop, being transformed by a vision of Elijah and Moses.Jesus experienced something called trans?g- uration.Peter, one of his more impulsive followers, interrupted this sacred moment by crying out that he wanted to make a monument of some kind for posterity. In our modern world he would have been the one with the camera making sure he posed everyone for a great photo. It was an impulsive blunder that I’m sure he regretted later. The sacred experience ended and they returned down the mountain to the real world of suffering and chaos. That path eventually led to the cross.I have always identi?ed a bit with Peter.I too speak before thinking, and jump into action without considering others. He was having a deep spiritual experience, and instead of living in the moment he wanted to do something to preserve that mountaintop experience forever. In my life I have experienced the divine on retreats, in worship, in nature, and being together with some of my special friends.I cherish those memories, but they are impermanent. We also have to come down to earth and return to normal life. One consolation is that God is not found only on the top of mountains. We can also experience the divine in some of the most mundane moments of everyday life, when we open our minds and hearts.2) Every spring when I get to work cleaning up the mess left from winter in my garden, I am always surprised to ?nd suspiciously familiar seedlings popping up.Not the spindly little weeds, or the vicious ?at grasses that push their way through the slowly warming soil, but familiar ones.Baby little tomato plants, strong pea sprouts and sometimes even the sharp tips of an onion ?nd their way into the sun.But I didn’t plant the seeds! While it is obvious where these plants came from—dropped from plants as one ?- nal act of life before wilting into the ground in fall—their growth truly does give me a sense of hope.I know that the work I will do on this earth will not last forever.I will die, and the actions and words that I create, all of the stories of my life and my relationships will soon fade.I can hope that I will be able to remain a part of this universe because I have done my part to pass on a very real sense of compassion and love to others.Hopefully I have taught and inspired at least a few other people, so that the way they live, the values they hold, are at least in some small way touched by my life. The seeds I plant now may not all survive through all that I still have to do in my life, but I know that some things, a few of the little seedlings will make it, to grow into the future.3) This week I ?nally took courage in hand and began converting my old VHS tapes to a digital format. What a delight it was to see thirty-year old images of my young children! Nostalgia crept in.Wouldn’t it be lovely to go back to that time of simple problems and sweet innocence? But nothing is permanent and no amount of grasping can make time stand still. Our relationships, our bodies and our world are all in a constant state of ?ux.Most of us have dif?culty with this aspect of life.We try to control our environment so we can enjoy a measure of stability. We resist the speed with which life is changing. We may spend our days looking back with regret or nostalgia at that which is no longer.Or, when life is not as we would like it, we may look forward to a future time when our troubles will be resolved.Yet in a world in motion the only moment we can actually count on is the present one.Eckhart Tolle in The Power of Now extolls the virtues of embracing the moment we ?nd ourselves in at all times. When we look back at past life events or forward to possible future scenarios we remain in the time- bound, chronological, horizontal state of memory and anticipation. But to fully embrace the present moment is to transcend these preoccupations and simply enjoy Being.Although I have experienced it only ?eetingly there is, in this state, a sense of being connected to all of life in the ever-expanding cosmos of creation.Notions such as impermanence lose their power. The present becomes such a delightful state in which to be that the concept of grasping seems ridiculous. We are in the river of life.We might as well relax and enjoy the ride.4) When all’s well, I wish things wouldn’t change.I remember wishing as a mother of young children, if only I could freeze this very moment, pause the moving picture of our life together, we might be happy forever.I still want to hold onto what is good even as it slips through my hands.Sometimes in the midst of life’s ?ux and ?ow, I’ve wished life would slow or stop, so I could get my bearings.Who of us doesn’t long for solid ground, a sense of stability?Perhaps like me you ?nd comfort in a sense of the eternal.Impermanence is more often perceived as a negative reality we must struggle to come to terms with.Learning to accept life on such terms, even our own essential impermanence, takes a lifetime of spiritual work.Yet I can think of so many times in my life when impermanence was pure gift, a saving grace. When change brought release and peace.Times not just in the dentist’s chair when all I longed for was that the moment would end, I’d welcome change for the sake of change, whatever comes next.Process theologian Henry Nelson Weiman spoke of the source of all that is as a dynamic inexhaustible energy. He named the divine spirit from which all existence ?ows as “creative interchange.” His idea of the eternal ?ts into our contemporary understanding of a developing universe, one not created as static at some mysterious point way back at the beginning of time.Instead, the universe we inhabit continually ?ows forth from that same source, and this constant change is unchanging.Overwhelmed by a world in constant ?ux, I ?nd comfort in the words of mystic Teresa of Avila: “Let nothing disturb you, nothing affright you; all is ?eet- ing, God ever remains.” Which argues not at all with Weiman’s divine principle; change is something we can count on.Thankfully impermanence is how blight turns to blessing, oppression gives way to justice, and evil can even shift toward good.So may we praise the spirit of impermanence and the eternal possibility of all we hope to change. One word, four voices - and now we invite your own re?ection: What effect does impermanence have on the way you live your days?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rabbi Boris Dolin leads the Dorshei-Emet community in Montreal; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco, Unitarian Universalist is retired from ministry with UUEstrie and now resides in St.Andrews by- the-Sea NB, but keeps one foot in the Townships by continuing with this column.COLUMNIST We can also experience the divine in some of the most mundane moments of everyday life, when we open our minds and hearts. There is a positive and powerful trend to view the role our climate crisis plays as the critical non-negotiable foundation for all industrial activities. The tragedy for the planet’s life forms is that there never needed to be an 11th-hour recognition by world governments and energy companies that the Industrial Revolution’s reliance on fossil fuels was catastrophic.Teck’s C$20.6-billion foray into Alberta’s tar sands is only one of many projects to be feeling the litmus test that the climate emergency is ?nally demanding of energy and other businesses.Last week a contentious third runway at London’s Heathrow airport was denied approval by a high court judgment because of the long-term negative impact it would have on climate-mitigation strategies committed to in the Paris Agreement.Business models that rely primarily on fossil-fuel expansion are being attacked, and the casualties of these schemes will increase.Teck terminated its Frontier project with a huge upfront loss, knowing that in the long term it would incur even greater liabilities if it ploughed up the boreal forest with unprecedented abandon.Of course it didn’t help the company to know that Indigenous groups were targeting rail lines and pipelines in connection with another controversial energy project, the Coastal GasLink pipeline in BC.Teck’s withdrawal was predictably met with fury by Alberta’s premier, Jason Kenney, but most interestingly the decision found quiet acceptance from Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, who were due to decide on the viability of the Frontier application this week.Trudeau was in the most unenviable predicament of being damned if he approved the oil sands project, because it would bring massive contamination to Alberta’s wilderness, increase CO2 levels (making a mockery of his Paris Agreement ambitions), and incur Indigenous peoples’ hostility, or damned by Alberta’s right-wing government for not perpetuating a petrol state and for forfeiting a proposed 7,000 new jobs.Rumours began to circulate that the Liberal government might defer any judgment on Teck’s approval.Too many political dice were being thrown into the air.Remember that Trudeau heads a minority government. The intensifying fossil-fuel protests translate into a more alienated body of young voters. If Trudeau were to accept the Frontier application, few young voters would ever vote Liberal again.Signing off on Frontier would be viewed as a betrayal of their future.Trudeau would lose credibility in light of such perceived injustice.I believe Teck CEO Donald R.Lindsay’s letter of February 23 to Canada’s environment minister, Jonathan Wilkinson, which outlined the reasons for withdrawing from further commitments to the tar sands, gave Trudeau one of his best days in political of?ce.Trudeau’s response to the letter in Question Period was, “Teck said clearly we support strong actions to enable the transition to a low-carbon future.” He went on to say, “Teck is also a strong supporter of Canada’s action on climate pricing and other climate policies such as legislated caps on oil sands emissions.” In Lindsay’s words, what is crucial is “a framework in place that reconciles resource development and climate change.” Are we to believe from this that renewable energy intensi?cation is the way forward?Coastal GasLink and LNG Canada have also placed a withering spotlight on Canada’s reprehensible colonial history. The ‘negotiations’ that led many signatories of First Nations to accept these mega-projects were steeped in the occupier’s ‘take it or leave it’ power ploy. The hereditary chiefs of the Wet’su- wet’en First Nation refused to give in.Blockades, railway disruption, and threats of violence against Indigenous people have been part of the mix of ongoing protests and government responses.Matthew Norris of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, recently wrote, “We can ?x this crisis, but it will take considerable effort and a genuine commitment to reject the status quo and accept the challenge of building processes based on co-operation and consent.Until that happens, convincing Indigenous peoples to participate in an illegitimate process will be a hard sell.Indigenous peoples are exhausted from seeing their words and input ignored by politicians and judges who continue to reinforce the status quo.” You can read his article in full at tinyurl.com/norris-?xing-the-cri- sis Canadians need to educate themselves if the ongoing rift between First Nation peoples and other Canadians is to be healed. It is not enough for Trudeau to ask for patience.A ?rst step would be for Canada to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).Amazingly, not long ago an unelected senate let the Declaration die on the ?oor primarily because of Conservative objections. Now is the chance for a minority government to make democracy a success and work with other parties to put UNDRIP into Canadian law. in midlife we face generativity versus stagnation. That is, when we’re young, we’re trying to ?gure out who we are and what matters to us, and as we age, we become more concerned with what we’re leaving behind.Generativity — de?ned as concern for future generations as a legacy of the self — is well-studied.Most studies on generativity only consider people in middle age, even though there is evidence to suggest that this concern for the future and one’s own legacy is important earlier in the lifespan. In fact, young people do share a concern for the future and their contribution to it.Our research shows that young people between the ages of 14 and 29 show levels of generative motivation that are as high or even higher than adults.Early generativity is also associated with caring friendships, community involvement and healthy identity development in adolescence and young adulthood. So not only are young people interested and capable of caring for future generations, but doing so is likely good for them.Beyond the research, Autumn Pel- tier, a young activist advocating for clean water, has said, “We are the keepers of the generations yet to come.” She leaves little room for doubt that young people can be motivated by generativ- ity.Changing how we work with youth Our team has seen ?rst hand the generativity of youth at the Students Commission of Canada (SCC), a not- for-pro?t organization that is working towards a world “where all young people transition successfully into adulthood.” At their “Canada We Want” conferences, we have witnessed early gener- ativity in action.Young people from across Canada with a diversity of experience, expertise and identities work together to develop a plan to create the change that they want to see in their community, tackling issues such as poverty, employment, prejudice and substance abuse. This work is then presented to politicians, policy-mak- ers and other leaders and has helped inform Canada’s ?rst national youth policy.Taking IT Global is another organization that capitalizes on young people’s generativity. It works to “empower young people to become agents of positive change in their local and global communities.” It has given out more than 2,500 grants to youth, and also provides education and online resources for adults. The grants have helped youth educate boys about mental health, and prompted a $15-million cleanup of a river in Nova Scotia. So how can we incorporate these ideas in our everyday interactions with young people?Whether we are parents, teachers, coaches or community leaders, it is worth re?ecting on whether our assumptions of youth stem solely from a de?cit model, or whether we account for the capacities and motivations of young people.Rather than focusing on what they lack, much more focus can be placed on their capacity and desire to have a positive and lasting impact. At the same time that we are asking young people who they want to be, we should be asking young people what kind of world they want to leave behind.Greater awareness of the importance of generativity in youth will contribute to a more pervasive narrative of young people as capable, and motivated to contribute, thus combating some useless and inaccurate stereotypes about youth. So the next time you see a young person in the news, or in your community, making the world a bit better for the next generation, you might smile to yourself and think, “Typical.” Heather Lawford is Co-Director of Research for the Centre of Excellence in Youth Engagement at the Students Commission of Canada. She receives funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).Heather Ramey is Co-Director of Research for the Centre of Excellence in Youth Engagement at the Students Commission of Canada. She receives funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).The Record welcomes your letters to the editor. Please limit your letters to 300 words. We reserve the right to edit for length, clarity, legality and taste. Please ensure there is a phone number or email where you can be reached, to con?rm authorship and current town/city of residence.Names will not be withheld but the address and phone number of the writer are not published, except by request. Please email your letters to newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com.Preference is given to writers from the Eastern Townships. The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture March 6 - March 12, 2020 TALK Jessie Pelletier Country Connection Looking back on a life full of music Herb Sharman was born in Cow- ansville, Quebec. He was one of nine children, but the only sibling in the family to ?nd an interest in music. At the age of Four he tried to make his own guitar with a cereal box and elastic bands. He was already a determined young man and he taught himself how to play the guitar. At the age of 12, Sharman con?rmed he had a taste for music when he picked up a trumpet for the ?rst time and felt the pleasure his ?rst notes brought him.He evolved rapidly by integrating different instruments but soon realized that guitar was his instrument of choice. At the age of 16 he was already performing in local bars as a dynamic musician and vocalist.Little did he know at the time that music would take him on the road and de?ne his life! After a few years with different bands but mainly with the Syndicate Revival Sharman started working as a professional musician and artist. He kept honing his skills and worked hard at writing songs.“In 1985 I had the opportunity to perform at the Gatineau Clog and won 2nd place in this prestigious competition intended to ?nd and promote the next Canadian country star.In 1987 I went on a mini tour of the west and out there I recorded a single entitled Gypsy which was well received by stations such as CHAT radio,” recalled the musician. This new song got him support from Canadian star Ronnie Prophet who encouraged Sharman to continue working on his songwriting.“In 1988 I moved to the Ottawa Valley, it was there that things really started to happen for me.I began doing solo engagements and the response was fantastic. In fact, the demand was so strong that I decided to put together a new version of Syndicate Revival he said.By September 1989 he released a new single titled Do You Want to Boogie. This single did extremely well and hit #3 on the Canadian content charts for CKAT Radio in Ontario and across the country.Motivated by this success, Sharman decided to go to the Maritimes which is so often considered as the Canadian cradle for country music. While continuing to hone his skills, he successfully won the hearts of the people in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and P.E.I.“In 1995 I came back to Quebec with 30 years of experience under my belt as an entertainer and over 14 albums.I was back in my home province with the strong desire to continue to conquer the heart of devoted fans of country music,” Sharman said of his returning to Quebec.“Since 1997 I have been performing in many different events and country festivals all around Quebec.I have been able to distinguish myself from the other country singers around,” Sharman added.Sharman is one artist who worked hard at ?nding a way to overwhelm his fans.He always worked hard to bring out the best music possible in order to please his public.“I think I am so lucky to still be playing with a lot of musicians. After you get over the hump you say, ‘Wow what a life.’ People seem to think it is easy to perform but I still get nauseated before a gig, big or small, because no matter how big the event it is very important,” stressed Sharman. There are a lot of things that can happen during a career. Some will make you laugh.Others are more tragic, but it leaves you with a lot of memories. But these stories are always fun to tell.“One time when we were coming down from Temiscaming to Ottawa my drummer, late Mike Arnette, was riding with his feet out the front window.I was passing and sure enough the car in front was pulling into a drive and we crashed. We picked up amps and speakers that were tied on the roof for hours and (by the way Mike pulled his feet in fast). We made it to a New?e Pub on St.Laurent, Ottawa” he remembered ,about what could have been a tragedy. But there are also some fond memories.“Finally, I met my idol Merle Haggard.I introduced himself and gracious Merle asked me to do a sound check with him.Needless to say, I was ecstatic.I spent all afternoon with him, and he gave me two back stage passes. To walked Merle to stage and back at the end of the show.It was so special” he continued.Sharman played in over 30 festivals across Quebec and Ontario for over 15 years. He has opened shows for big artists such as Isabelle Boulay, Patrick Norman and Little Jimmy Dickens. He has recorded over 24 albums.Zellers, which doesn’t exist anymore, hired Sharman to sing in a different store every week. This was an excellent stage to share his talent. The musician had three chances to go down to Nashville, but he was too shy to give it a try.“Ronnie Prophet sent me a letter from Nashville inviting me to come down.Being foolish as I am sometimes, I refused and still regret it,” he said.He could possibly have made it big, but he’ll never know. But he played in St.Tite seventeen years in a row.Now Herb is playing at many senior’s homes monthly and is making new recordings. He has great memories of all the musicians he shared the stage with.He now lives in Stanstead, Quebec playing music every chance he gets and music is good to him.Next time you hear that he’s playing somewhere, go check it out.He will sing your favourite country song. #CivicEngagement #InvisibleLabour #WomenInLiteracy #CommunityWork ‘Taking back our power as women’ By Taylor McClure Special to The Record In honor of International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, the Len- noxville and District Women’s Centre (LDWC) is holding their annual ‘International Women’s Day Dinner and Celebration’ on Friday, March 13.It is an occasion that many women in the local community look forward to with around 100 attendees each year. This special event welcomes women from the community to bring their own wine, enjoy a nice meal, participate in a silent auction, and dance to the sounds of traditional music. The LDWC’S celebration also includes a different theme every year. This year’s theme is superstitions concerning women from around the world.Part of the evening consists of a bring your own wine and a fabulous meal.“The meal is always super good, it’s like a buffet, but a very good buffet,” said Lucy Levasseur, new Program Coordinator at the LWDC.“There are different menus so there’s not just one thing.” A silent auction will also take place which supports the initiatives and activities of the LDWC.“It’s fundraising for our organization,” explained Levas- seur.“We use that money to offer other activities. It comes from the community and goes right back into the community.” In terms of the entertainment for the evening, four artists from the area will ?ll the room with the sounds of traditional music. The LDWC invited Courtney Drew, Fiddler, Mary-Jeanne Brousseau, Accordionist, Timi Turmel, Pianist, and Marie-Soleil Pilette, Caller, to get people on their feet and dancing.“They are all young individuals from the area at the professional level,” said Lucy Levasseur. She added that they are all women, except for Turmel, also pointing out that it is rare in Quebec traditional music that a woman is a Caller. The theme for this year’s event is learning about the superstitions concerning women from around the world. With around 100 women expected to dance the night away, Lucy explained how this was a perfect example of something that was historically viewed as taboo.“Losing control and dancing all night with men, the party aspect was not a good thing, according to the church.Women needed to be disciplined and not interact with men.” She said.“Their families threatened them that they would lose their souls.” This is only one of the many superstitions that women were and still are confronted with in many different areas of the world.According to an article written by Brenda Hartwell for the LWDC’s Newsletter, there are various examples of superstitions surrounding a woman’s menstruation.“In the U.S.and the U.K., people are told not to go camping with menstruating women because they might attract bears.” She also mentioned that in Romania, they believe that if a woman is menstruating, she can kill ?owers if she touches them. That’s why this event is so important for the LWDC.“It’s about breaking all of these taboos and taking back our power as women.” So far, around 70 women have signed up already to take part in the event happening on Friday, March 13.If you were hoping to attend the event, there is still time to call the LDWC to reserve your place. The cost of each ticket will be between $15 and $20 depending on if you are a member of the LWDC or not and they can be purchased at the door.It is also important to note that items for the silent auction are also still welcomed and can be dropped off at the LWDC between now and next Thursday. These items can be things such as books, crafts, and baked goods. If you need to drop off your items outside of their regular of?ce hours, you can call the LDWC to make sure that someone is there. For more information and reservations, call 819-564-6626.COURTESY The The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, March 6, 2020 Page 17 Local Sports Even though this sounds very boring, my very favourite thing to eat is a really fresh organic salad because they are so tasty and healthy! Award-winning guitarist Liona Boyd is in tuned to healthy living habits Liona Boyd is a world renowned Canadian classical guitar player with several major accolades, including the 2018 Lifetime Achievement award from the Joann Falletta International Guitar Competition, sponsored by WNED in Buffalo.Boyd is known internationally as The First Lady of the Guitar and was recently honored with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award by The National Guitar Museum, based in Orlando, Florida, which recognizes a guitarist each year who has made an outstanding contribution to the legacy of the guitar. In a Q&A interview, Boyd who started her career in 1974 and has released 28 albums shared her passion for music, her latest music projects and how she maintains a healthy lifestyle.Q: How do you maintain your stamina to keep composing music?A: As for my general stamina I love to power walk, ride my bike and do yoga.I don’t really need anything to maintain my stamina as I have always loved to write original music and for me it is a joy rather than a task.Q: What is your favourite dish?A: Even though this sounds very boring my very favourite thing to eat is a really fresh organic salad because they are so tasty and healthy! I also love every single fruit I have ever encountered :-) There is nothing more delicious to me than a freshly baked apple pie with vanilla ice cream and a cup of tea, but mostly I eat a vegan diet that is better for the body and better for the planet.I was brought up a vegetarian by my vegetarian parents.Q: Where were you and how excited were you when you received the news that you were being awarded this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award?A: I was here in my house that I have in Palm Beach, Florida where I always spend at least four months over the winter.I was thrilled to pieces that the US based National Guitar Museum chose to honour my career in this way. They told me that the previous winners included Jose Feliciano, Glen Campbell, BB King, and Bonnie Raitt, so I am in very good company :-) In the museum they have my electric/classical guitar, one of my concert gowns, a collection of albums and a video of me performing Malagueña.It now has ?ve million YouTube views so I guess they chose a good one; and it the ?rst thing you see up on a screen when entering the museum.Q: How important is it to have music in our lives such as in schools?A: I believe it is essential that schools continue to include music in the curriculum, as young people need to be exposed to good music and to understand the basics so that for the rest of their lives they can appreciate it.Sadly, it is often one of the ?rst subjects to be cut out of schools and many kids grow up without knowledge of classical music.Music enriches our souls and touches all our emotions very deeply.I was fortunate that my parents exposed me to good music through recordings and my mother took me to hear my ?rst classical guitar concert when I was 13.It changed my life forever.I know I have been able to do the same thing for many youngsters.Q: How does it feel to be a role model?A: I never planned to be a role model, but I know through all the hundreds of communications sent to me by guitarists and guitar students that I provided inspiration to so many and obviously was a pioneer for many.Classical guitar only had a small following around the world, but because I appeared on dozens of huge shows televised to millions of people such as three appearances on the Tonight show with Johnny Carson and several of my own TV specials in different countries, my career had an impact that I never dreamt about when I was a penniless student studying in Paris.I have enjoyed mentoring many singers and guitarists and have been responsible for launching careers for some of them, so that is very gratifying.Q: What is next for you?A: I am not sure if I am going to continue touring, but I am positive that I will continue to compose music.I also enjoy writing and have published two autobiographies.I know I will plan to do some more traveling as that is another of my addictions beside music.Check out her website: www.classicalguitar.com Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind North Hatley Senior Bonspeil Submitted by David Wilson North Hatley held its annual Senior Curling Bonspiel this week with play wrapping up late Wednesday afternoon. There were numerous exciting moments, the best being a draw against 2 opponent stones in extra ends to sit dead center on the button. Most importantly everyone had a good time, con?rming that curling is a wonderful place to meet new people with a zest for life.16 teams from across the Townships participated with Sherbrooke taking the A side over Danville, and Lennoxville winning the B side over another Sherbrooke team.Congratulations to all the ?nalists.(A Champs) R to Left Skip Yves Marmen, 3rd Gilles Roy, 2nd Daniel Ayotte, lead Luc Bilobe- au (Sherbrooke) Page 18 Friday, March 6, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Death Death In Memoriam In Memoriam BIRTH NOTICES, CARDS OF THANKS, IN MEMORIAMS, BRIEFLETS: Text only: 40¢ per word.Minimum charge $10.00 ($11.50 taxes included) Discounts: 2 insertions or more: 15% off With photo: additional $18.50.DEADLINE: 11 a.m., day before publication.BIRTHDAY, ANNIVERSARY & GET-WELL WISHES, ENGAGEMENT NOTICES: Text only: $16.00 (includes taxes) With photo: $26.00 ($29.90 taxes included) DEADLINE: 3 days before publication.WEDDING WRITE-UPS: $26.00 ($29.90 taxes included) WITH PHOTO: $36.00 ($41.40 taxes included) Please Note: All of the aforementioned (except death notices) must be submitted typewritten or neatly printed, and must include the signature and daytime telephone number of the contact person. Can be e-mailed to: classad@sherbrookerecord.com - Forever in our hearts, TRUDY & AL ASK THE DOCTORS By Eve Glazier, M.D., and Elizabeth Ko, M.D.Dear Doctor: Everybody’s suddenly talking about how it’s important to eat some walnuts every day.Who decided that? Why is there always a new food fad?Dear Reader: It’s a challenge to keep up with the latest superfood that’s going to change your life.Blueberries, broccoli, chia seeds, kale, acai berries, pea ?our, ?sh oil, oatmeal - and the list goes on - have all had their day.Health promises include fast and easy weight loss, lower blood pressure, better cholesterol levels, improved mood and even disease prevention. This wish for a cure-all is as old as time, with a diabetes remedy of okra and wheat germ dating back to ancient Egypt in 1550 B.C.Thousands of years later, we still love the notion of a food with special properties that extend beyond its nutritional pro?le.It’s that ongoing wish for a magic bullet that ?lls our newscasts and headlines with an ever-changing list of miracle foods. As you point out in your letter, one of the newest entries into the superfood pantheon is the walnut. The reason why is recent research that links walnuts to certain health bene?ts.A study from scientists at Penn State found that people who ate several ounces of walnuts each day saw an increase in the populations of several types of gut bacteria.Among these were gut bacteria associated with blood pressure regulation and with improved heart health. This echoes the ?ndings of previous studies, which have linked a diet that includes walnuts with a reduced risk of heart disease. The subjects in the Penn State study also saw an increase in the numbers of a gut bacterium that may help to protect the lining of the gut. This holds promise for conditions such as leaky gut syndrome and in?ammatory bowel disease. The results of another study, conducted by researchers at Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center, was published earlier this year in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Those ?ndings suggested that eating walnuts may have a bene?cial effect on cognitive decline in older adults who have existing risk factors for the condition.Similar effects on cognitive function were not seen in healthy older adults. Both of these are small studies. The Penn State research included 42 volunteers. The Loma Linda University study looked at data from 640 “free- living” older adults in California and Spain. In addition, the authors of the Loma Linda University study disclosed that it was completed with funding from the California Walnut Commission. We’re not complete skeptics when it comes to superfoods. The truth is that many are indeed rich in an array of vitamins, minerals, ?ber or micronutrients associated with improved health and well-being.But rather than concentrate on a few unique and important foods, we like to think in terms of what some licensed nutritionists are now calling the “super plate.” That is, a healthful and balanced diet made up of whole, fresh foods from a wide variety of sources. You’ll feel better, you won’t get bored and your body will thank you.Eve Glazier, M.D., MBA, is an internist and associate professor of medicine at UCLA Health.Elizabeth Ko, M.D., is an internist and assistant professor of medicine at UCLA Health.Walnuts considered the newest superfood The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, March 6, 2020 Page 19 Church Services Anglican Presbyterian United LENNOXVILLE Saint George’s Anglican Church, Lennoxville, 84 Queen Streeet. On the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Sundays we have Holy Communion Service and Sunday School class.Services begin at 11:00 a.m.On the 4th Sunday we have Service of the Word.Services begin at 11:00 a.m.819-346-5564.LENNOXVILLE St.Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 256 Queen St., Lennoxville, 819-569- 3100, Sundays: 10:30 a.m.Worship and Sunday School.AYER’S CLIFF - MAGOG Ayer’s Cliff - Magog - Georgeville Pastoral Charge welcomes everyone for Sunday service at Beulah United Church in Ayer’s Cliff - Worship service and Sunday School 9:15 a.m.and St.Paul’s United Church, Magog - Worship Service and Sunday School 11:15 a.m.with lunch provided each Sunday following the service in Magog.Minister: Rev.Lee Ann Hogle 819-571-7233.WATERVILLE/NORTH HATLEY Waterville/North Hatley United Church, Sunday, March 8, 11 a.m., worship service with leader Carolyn Linde.Sunday School.Rev.Mead Baldwin 819- 837-1112.SHERBROOKE Plymouth-Trinity United Church – corner of Dufferin and Terrill, at 819-346- 6373 and www.plymouthtrinitychurch.org – invites you to our 10:30 a.m.worship service on March 8, the second Sunday in Lent, which is also International Women’s Day.There will be NO children’s church, but children are always welcome and there’s an activity table for the younger kids.Don’t forget to spring your clock forward an hour when you wake up! Page 20 Friday, March 6, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record A winter driving warning You may not be safe to walk in your own driveway. It may not be safe in winter! I just experienced that for a second time - the second was here in Coaticook.I was going for breakfast with the Ladies Club and going down the driveway to my van Friday morning. All seemed ordinary but nearly to my ?rst destination, I was hit from behind by my neighbour with his pickup as he was clearing the driveway. He was backing up to clear the path and did not see me.As I do not hear well, I did not realize I would be hit and by the time I heard him, I felt the impact. He thought he had hit a chunk of ice, so backed up catching me and pulling me under the truck.I made enough noise but was not heard by him.I was under the truck and clothing dragged me back up the drive. The housing hit my head, and he heard that and stopped.Thank God he stopped!! He came to me and I asked him to help me up from the ground. From here the ambulance arrived and I was put there.Severe gashes on my head and profusely bleeding, I arrived at the CHUS.I was very lucky in spite of a concussion and battered face.I am at home recuperating.I thank JP for his immediate help and the ambulance attendant for trying to stop the bleeding. One cannot get better care than the CHUS staff, and I thank the doctor on call. She stitched me up and was very kind and as gentle as anyone could possibility be.Four hours before they thought I wouldn’t survive.A few years ago, at my home in Stanstead I nearly had the same type of thing happen, as hunters used my drive to turn around and did not check to see anyone there.I was blowing out my driveway and nowhere near the road.My Sarge dog made me look around - and there was the truck! Badly bruised and lamed up, I am moaning and groaning at home. So, everyone be extra aware around you, especially during the winter months.Submitted by Ernestine Whipple Your Birthday FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2020 Keep moving forward.Refuse to let an emotional matter consume you.Don’t make unnecessary changes.Take your time and leave no room for error.Be prepared to do the work yourself if you want things done to your speci?ca- tions.Make hard work, discipline and stability your priorities.PISCES (Feb.20-March 20) - Page 24 Friday, March 6, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record By Danny Seo There are lots of ways to help reduce waste when you’re packing a lunch for yourself or for your kid.To avoid using an icepack to keep things cool, try freezing a food item in the box and letting it do double duty instead. One idea is to freeze cups of yogurt so they act as an icepack in your box; by lunchtime the yogurt will have thawed out enough to eat, but will still be cold. And wrap sandwiches in aluminum foil instead of plastic single-use bags; foil keeps things cool and fresh, and it’s fully recyclable, too.Do Just One Thing "]
