average American family dropped from 5.8 to 4.6 persons.Had the average size of families remained the same in 1900 &s in 1790 the countrv today would have a native population greater by 20,000,000 Are You Amongst Those Who Say Wool Is Too Hot?If so, why doesn’t nature provide animals with a cotton covering for summer and a woollen one for winter?Animals even in tropical countries do not feel oppressively hot in summer, nor do those in the temperate zone take chills by becoming wet or on account of the changeable seasons. The reason is, they are covered with wool (hair or fur) summer and winter alike. You can enjoy the same immunity from the heat by wearing wool throughout.Woollen underwear, shirts and clothing keep the skin pores working freely, removing the feeling of oppressive heat and all, fear of chills, and giving you a lightness and freedom unknown to those who have not tried it.The Jaeger System provides absolutely pure undyed woollen underwear of gauze texture; and donated by the M.A.A.A.for the Championship of Montreal in physical training.Eight teams entered for the competition, all of which were representative of the leading athletic and educational establishments of the city and district. The work done by the teams was exceedingly good, and evoked considerable enthusiasm amongst those who were privileged to witness it.While the exercises of all teams were of a very high order, it would seem that the judges, in giving their verdict in favor of Mount St.Louis, were struck by the happy combination of health-giving exercises and well- executed recreative gymnastics. Those who witnessed the final test before Colonel Sir John Hanbury-Wil- liams at the Arena were particularly impressed by the absolute precision and the poetry of motion displayed by the team in their club-swinging exercises, It is recognized by those responsible for the physical training of the students of this Institution that mere “pretty exercises” are not of much value in themselves, but when combined with the more serious body-building movements for both external and internal development, such recreative gymnastics as club-swinging are of much value in training the young pupils to become physically well-balanced men, and the sound body is generally a sure sign of a sound mind.HE + x m He, NRy Bing a S ve BRK NERY Ce pte HE p AD SANEPST SON a About Weddings.on Two instructive little booklets have just been issued by the Advertising Department of Henry Birks & Sons, Ltd, Montreal. One entitled “The Wedding Ring,” giving an historical sketch of this interesting little band of gold as it has come to us through the early ages. The other entitled “The Etiquette of ONS HoNrag,, LiMire, Wedding Stationery,” giving concise and accurate information as to Fashion’s correct form of wording the invitation and announcement, how they should be sent, who should send them, the correct form of addressing and much other information that one directly interested in a wedding should Know. These booklets are well worth sending for and are free for the asking.(Photo by Lapres & Lavergne, St.Denis street, corner Ontario.) the increased height affording improved facilities in the laboratories. The construction throughout is fire-proof.The floors and stairways are of reinforced concrete. The interior is thoroughly divided by fire-walls, the openings in which are closed by automatic fire- doors.Indeed, all the doors are practically fire-proof, while the more exposed windows are glazed with wire- glass. The elevators run in fire-proof shafts.Combustible material in the furniture is reduced to the lowest lim- it.All lockers, for instance, are steel, while the drawing-desks have steel frames and the drawers are lined with zinc and asbestos.Noteworthy features of the building are a commodious Students’ Common Room, and a lec- ture-theatre seating 200 students.A modern ventilating and heating system has been installed. For the former a large fan supplies 55,000 cubic feet of air per minute, which, after being heated, washed and suitably moistened, is conveyed by means of ducts to all parts of the building.while the hot water system, controlled by separate thermostats on the east and west sides of the building, gives a practically constant temperature under all weather conditions, The scheme of artificial lighting is also a feature of this building. It is worthy of note that this building, which is without doubt the finest of its kind on the continent.is a “homemade” product. It was designed and the construction supervised by Professor Nobbs, of the Architectural Department, and his assistants; while the heating, ventilating, electrical and structural features were supervised by Professors McLeod, Durley and Owens.Commodious as it is, the rapidly increasing number of students already taxes the accommodation to the utmost, and if the expansion of the Faculty continues, a second Engineering Building will be required in the near future.THE ALTERNATING CURRENT LABORATORY—The l.aboratory is fitted with alternating current generators of different makes, driven by direct current motors.Sixteen alternating current machines, including single, two and three phase generators, synchronous motors, synchronous converters, together with stationary and rotary induction apparatus are provided. The machines are so arranged that they can readily be moved by means of the electric travelling overhead crane, which is seen in the picture to be bringing a machine up the Laboratory.Dean Adams and Professor Herdt are standing on the right.shewn at work.LAN NN THE FOUNDRY—This room has benches and apparatus for moulding and core-making.On the right a gas-fired brass melting-furnace is shewn, and at the back a cupola for melting iron.A class of First Year students is ONE OF THE GEODETIC LABORATORIES—This room contains instruments for measuring the constants and determining the errors of surveying instruments. The instrument in the foreground is a circular comparator. This is one of the most important scientific laboratories at McGill.THE SMITH SHOP—This room is provided with 16 Sturtevant forges, each power driven and connected with an exhaust-fan.There is a power-hammer and the necessary equipment of anvils and tools.(All photographs on this page by A.I.Rice, St.Catherine Street West.) — J "]
