Great Irrigation Scheme in Western Canada Just Explained by Sir Thomas Shaughnessy IN THE CANADIAN WEST—For some years past the C.P.R.has had under construction a vast irrigation system in Alberta.Over 350 miles of canals and ditches have so far been excavated, by means of which water is now hen the irrigation plans shall have been fully carried out, upwards of 350,000 acres will be furnished with water.As a result of the irrigation development of the past few years, a very large area of land just east of Calgary ‘has t, and a decided impetus has been given to the raising of live stock.The above illustration shows a round-up of horses near Elbow River, Calgary.(Photo by courtesy of the C.P.R.) traces of copper are to be found in many places; gold has been found in at least two places on the Hudson's Bay coast, while the writer, who has spent three years in the territory, has in his possession a small sample of quartz, full of visible gold, that was brought from the far north by an Esquimaux, along with twenty-one other samples containing iron pyrites instead of gold; all picked up in a haphazard manner and without each being marked with the locality it cames from, during a journey of over 800 miles; iron ore occurs in large quantities, and a large deposit has already been taken up by a syndicate of Philadelphia capitalists.The servants of the Hudson's Bay Company continually report the existence of coal on a large island off the west coast, but the locality has never been visited by one competent to judge; while there are large deposits of galena on the west coast only awaiting a means of communication to make them valuable.All these facts point to the possibility of a new Superior copper or iron district, a new Cobalt, or even Klondyke, being at some future date in operation in what may be the Province of Quebec.The above are possibilities—is the following only a dream?For some years past, geologists of both Canada and the United States have said that some diamonds picked up in the Northern and Central States were carried there by glacial agency from the Hudson’s Bay regions.A few years ago a Canadian geologist, while travelling in Ungava, came across a bed of “blue MAX HAMBOURG, pianist, who gives a recital in the Stanley Hall on Monday, October 28.MAKER OF__2> Alaska, Pup Seals, Russ.Pony, 2 Broad Tail, #42 Water Mink, N.TAILOR Write for Catalogue High Grade Furs \\ CC PL HB.Sable, Th Ti fi M Place d’Armes, Quebec.Fred HR.Sable, TEL —— Bender Fall Overcoats.Double Breasted Prussian Collars.$20 “Chamberlain” Paletots $25 The Chester.$30 class goods.B.M.& T.JENKINS PHILLIPS SQUARE Elntique Galleries Are showing an exceptionally fine collection of : :: Entique jfurniture Visit these beautiful display rooms.Furniture of all periods and of every kind of finish.Also treasures in rare old Silverware, China and Old Brass.TORONTO ee tre of the World's Fashions Fall Opening Crowned with Success (] “Fashion-Craft” shops now provide for the best dressers in Canada.This has been proven this Fall by the class of purchasers that are keeping every shop busy showing Fall Styles Galore.© Materials the very best, in an abundance of patterns exclusively “Fashion Craft.” ( Everything in Fall clothes for men, and remember nothing but high “High Art in Clothesdom,” a handsome illustrated folder for the asking.3 Shops—231 St.James St., 470 St.Catherine St.West, and Corner of St.Andre and St.Catherine J J ‘Business Suits.Imported English Wor- the best mills, all Fall weights.$25 x steds from clay,” which, being exactly similar to the diamond soil of South Africa, caused him to pause in his journey and spend a day in digging, but without results.Three years ago, while up in that region, and not knowing about the find of the geologist, although within a comparatively short distance of it, the writer picked up a mineral specimen which he could not name, but which was afterwards examined in Montreal and pronounced to be an hitherto unknown form of pure carbon.Do these three facts justify us in saying that there is a possibility that some day we may see the repetition of the African diamond fields within the limits of Canada?Two hundred miles north of Belle Isle is Lake Melville, a large salt-water lake connected with the sea by a narrow channel.On all Canadian maps the north and south shores of this inland sea are shown as Ungava and Quebec territory respectively, while on all Newfoundland maps this territory is shown as part of Labrador.In all that has been said about Ungava, this disputed territory has been treated as a no man’s land, but it is Ungava’s one outlet to the Atlantic.At present the shores of this sea are comparatively thickly settled by whites, who carry on profitable fisheries during the summer and hunt fur-bearing animals during the winter; while at the head of the lake a large pulp and lumber company, having obtained concessions from the Newfoundland Government, are operating large mills there.These people are at present governed by Newfound- land laws.administered by New- — foundland justices, and pay import and export duties to Newfoundland.Surely it behooves the three interested governments—soon it may be only two—to have this dispute settled as soon as possible; for, as the country increases in value, as it is fast doing, the inevitable settlement may cause as intense, although less widespread feeling as did the settlement of the Alaskan dispute.Should the award go against Newfoundland, she will have to give up territory she now administers as part of Labrador; should it go against Ungava, she will lose her one good outlet to the Atlantic Ocean.A.A.CHESTERFIELD.France and Italy run national pawn- shops for the benefit of the poorer section of their population.vi Cr 1 Vag wo / B 4 ;
