break out in any part of the Fown or City, shall repair immediately to the spot, with their distinctive badges, which shall consist in a medal or staff of office ; cach Member to be provided with the said medal or statf of office, and dclivered to Lim at the cost of the Society, aid shail take upon themselves the complete and absolute command over ail perso:.s belonging to the fire Society.They shail cause the Captains of the Fire kngines to place them in suchsituation as shall best conduce to the extinguishing of the fire, Ne.4.\u2014All Captains, Lieutenants, Firemen, Volunteers and Constables, as weit as all persons employed or aiding in extinguishing the fire and saving property, shall obey all orders that may be given for that object by any Member of the society.\u2018The Members of the Society shall be authorised to fix upon and point out sate and convenient places for depositing the f'urniture, goods and effects saved from the houses or buildings on fire ; they shatl attenu tu the formation of lines or ranks to convey water to the engines engaged at such tires, and finally to make use of ail necessary and proper means to compel obedieuce to the orders and directions that may be given for the extinction of tires, and for the preservation of property aud the maintenance of peace and good order.No 5.\u2014The superior command to.devolve on the Member for place, of the names of five persons who agree to become Volunteers as required by Law ; and as soon as the Return shall be made, the society shall constitute a company of sixty Volunteers to be under the command of a Captain and two Lieutenants, who shall serve for the period of one year.DUTIES OF THE FIREMEN OR ENGINEER-MEN.No.7.\u2014 That as suon as any company of Volunteer Firemen shall have said Engine to the place where the fire has broken out, with the fire-buckets, hose and appendages, and shall announce the arrival of the same to any of the Members of the Society then present, and shall strictly obey and execute all orders they shall receive from any Member of the Society, and do th-ir utmost in order to extinguish the fire ; after the extinction of the fire, each Captain and Fireman shall convey back the Engine under his care to the t«ngine House.and the Captain shall make his report within forty eight hoars to the Secretary-Treasurer of any defectin the said Engine.or deficiency of Buckets, or other implements.No.d.\u2014The Captain of each Fire Engine shall muster his company at least once à month during the summer, for the exercise and instruction of the company under his command in the management of the said Engine, and shall carefully replace it in its situation ; and the Engine-men shall be oblized to obev such orders as they may receive from their Captains, relative to the said Engive; cvery Captain of an | ngine, or Ergine-men who shall neglect to conform to any of the rules above mentioned, or who shaif refuse to obey any order he may receive currency.DUTIrS OF THE COMPANY OF VOLUNTEERS, No.9.\u2014~That as soon as the Company of the Volunteers shall have been formed, in conformity to the above mene tioned act, they shall be subject to the shall, a- soon as it shall have been organised, make out a list of the christian and surnames, places of residence, and calling of all the individuals composing the said company, and shall give « number to each of them ; he will report to the Society the names of all those who may die or absent themselves trom the Society, and the names of such us are willing to replace them.The prrsons =o chosen to fulfil the duties of Volunteers, and accepted as such by the Socicty.shall choose their distinctive badges with which cach Volunteer shall furnish himself at his own cost; the Captain, lieutenant and Volunteers shall, as soon as they hear the £re- bell, or othervise become aware of the existence of a fire, repair immediately to the place where it has broken out.and GAZETMIS DB their best efforts to prevent thefts, they shall send away from the vicinity of sucli fires all vagabouds and suspected persons ; they shall cause the persous present to form ranks or lines to the nearest place where water may be bad for supplying the fire engines; they shall take up and keep in their custody all persons committing robberies or causing uny disord.r whatsvever, or who shall refuse to assist at such fire when thereto required by any Member of the Socicty, or who may abuse or ill treat any Member of the Society, or any other persons working at | DUTIES OF THE COLLECTOB, No.14.\u2014That the collector before entering upon office, be bound to give to the Society two sutlicient securities, to the satistaction of the President, tor the due execution of the duties of\u201d his otlice.Jt shall be his duty to make a statement of ll the houses in the city aud suburbs, in order to ascertain the number of flues for which each pro- prictor may be liable to contribute.He shall also make enquiry if there be any wells to the Houses, and at what distance they are from the middle of the street.tle shall keep a book tor that purpose.He must likewise ascertain the number of the chimnies in each house, and in each story, distinguishing as nearly as possible which are made use of in winter, and which in summer.He shall he authorised, in the day time, fur this object, to enter into any house in the city and suburbs of Quebec, and shall r port to the Society the nantes of those persons who shall refuse to give him either the necessary information or person building or causing to be built or erected, in the City of Guebue, any faise chimney or bye-chimuey, or making or causing to be made any fire place at a distance from the principal chimney, or from the chimnies of uny house communicating with such chimnivs by a bye-funuel, in order to conduct the smoke into the said principal or other chimuies, (Frankiin or otlier stoves, the smoke of which is conveyed into the chimney by sheet iron pipes, weil secured, excepted,) shail be liable to and pay fur each chimuey or fire jlace, so built or erected, a fine of one pound currency ; as well as a further sum of five shiiings currency toi every day that such chimney or tire picce shall be and remain unde.molizhed, from the day that notice for the demoiition of the same shall have been given by the Society.Provided always that the said fines together, shall not eacee:i tor one cffence the sum cf five pounds currency ; ond ail chimnies or fire pluces of the abuve description now existing in the city, shall be taken down or ctfectually stopped un, within one mouth trom the publication of this rule, under afin of ten shillings currency per day, to be paid by the person or persons not
