but has failed to elect any thing, and the question of war or peace with Turkey remains precisely where it did, excepting that the desire for war in the people and army is much more ardent than when bis Grace left England. We are given to understand that tie Empress Mother (who governs) must be added 10 the people und army.Accounts from Lima have been received to the 30th Dec.The Castle Caluo was stiflheld by the Spaniards, but negociations for its surrender had again been opened. Two flags of truce had been exchanged, and it was from this circumstance expected that the place would be given up by capitulation, as previously to this time all offers for neguciation had been neglected by the Gover nor Rodil.By the French papers of Wednesday last, which arrived in town yesterday, we find that great rejoicings had taken place at Paris in consequence of the rejection of the Bitl of Primogeniture by the Chamber of Peers, Several quariers of the city illnminated, in spite of the exertions of the police to prevent such public demons- (rations of triumph, Windsor, April 14.—From the change of weather at the commencement of this week, his Majesty became slightiy affected with gout, but he was so much better yesterday as to be able to take an airing for two hours in his pony phacton, in the Great Park.ln the evening bis Majesty dined with his suite, The King isex- pected to resume his airing this day, the cairinges being iu 1eadiness fur that purpose.LIVERPOOL, APRIL 18.FALL OF MISSOLONGIHE.(From the Etoile, duted Wednesday, April 12.) *“ The heroic defenders of Missolonghi have ceased to live! Reduced to 1400 men, who were reduced to four ounces of biscuit, they saw, till the 17th Feb.the storm gathering which was to swallow them up ; the Egyptians, directed by Europeans, among whom there were unhappily some Frenchmen, having at that time completed the pontoons, by means of which they were to cross the shallows to attack Missolonghi on the side of Mavri Aliki, at which point there were no fortifications, because the lagoon defended the town on thatside. On the 18th the enemy examined the ground, aud tbe Turkish fleet having reappeared at Procopanistos, at the entrauce of the Gulf of Missolonghi, there was every reason to expect an attempt to storm. From that day every individual prepared himself for death ; and from the 19th to the 21st of February, all the Christians celebrated their obsequies. The Bishop Joseph administered the sacrament to them, and the service for the dead having been recited, every one repaired to his post.« From the 22d to the 25th all was tranquil in the camp of Ibrahim, and the enemy began in the night to place his pontoons. Two hours after sun-rise the Yuropean engineers had succeeded in approaching within 100 toises of the town, and shouts announced the attack. Two lines of pontoons ending at the same point joined, the cannon of the Christians began to roar, the firing of the musketry commenced, and at eleven o’clock, two pontoons having been destroyed, the barbarians retired in disorder.Acclamations and cries of joy announced to the inhabitants of Missolonghi the triumph of the cross.¢ The 28th of Feb.Ibraham, having united all his forces, made a second attack, but without success, On the 2d of March, in a third attack, the barbarians made themselves masters of the head of the causeway, and from that moment, the pontoons having been united at that point, the destruction of the Christians, who had only 427 able to fight, was considered as inevitable : yet no thought of surrender entered any body's mind, and no mouth pronounced the word capitulation ; every one seemed only to think of selling his Jife dear.At length, on the 8th of March (20th of March new style), the last hour of the Christians sounded. At ten o'clock the Turks had taken Missolonghi by storm, the Bishop Joseph had been burut by a slow fire, all the men Lad been put to the sword, and the number of corpses of drowned women and children choked up the Lagoons.” — o> Much Parliamentary business remains to be done, Several important public, and many private, Bills are in their course through the two Houses ; and there is one very interesting and arduous subject yet untouched ; we allude to the Report of the Chancery Commission, which will serve as the groundwork of four or five distinct Bills. These, we understand, will shortly be brought forward by the Attorney-General, and will together embrace as effectual a reform of the practice and course of the Court of Chancery, as can be made practically useful.Still it may easily be believed, that measures of such consequence cannot pass through the two Houses without many and long discussions, which must necessarily tend to protract the present Session.— London Courier.Dr.Poynter, the Roman Catholic Bishop of the London district, in conformity with the bull of Leo XII.has ordered a jubilee te be held by the Catholics of England, which commenced on Sunday, and is to be continued for six months.—p$-o— THE ARMY Unattached — Lieut.F.Maule, and Lieut.L.P.Townshend, from the 79th Foot, to be Capuains of Infantry by purchase, Commissions dated 8th April, 1826.79th Regt.Eusign T.Crombie, to be Lieuteuaut, vice Maule, do.dv.dn.Ensign R.Fulton, to be Lieutenant, vice Towns hend, 9th do.do.3.Biuny, gent.to he Ensign, vice Crombie, 8th do.do.C.Cameron, geat, (0 be Eusign, vice Fulton, 9th do.do.Loxpon, April 4ch, 1826.Detachments 70th and 71lst arvived in Town on Sune day evening from Scotland, on their route to their res- peciive Corps and Depots, FROM AMERICAN PAPERS.—e
