Give us Max Tudor! GooD READS LENNOXVILLE LIBRARY n the occasion of my recent birth- ee [I won’t say which!], a friend from Boston gave me a book by G.M.Malliet.Malliet is a well-travelled American writer who spent several years doing graduate studies in the UK and now resides in Alexandria, Virginia. The somewhat redundantly titled A Fatal Winter (2012) is the second in the seasonally titled Max Tudor series, of which there are now six with a seventh due out next year. She is also the author of the Inspector St.Just series, one of which won an Agatha Award, and several of her other works have been nominated for the same prize.Six categories of Agatha Awards are given annually by Malice Domestic Inc.for the cozy mystery sub- genre (closed setting, no sex or violence, amateur detective).Weycombe, her first stand-alone novel, is scheduled for release next month. The Lennoxville Library has three of her books: two in English and one in French translation, and A Fatal Winter can be speedily accessed through inter-library loan.Malliet’s work has been compared favourably to that of both Agatha Christie and the Townships’ own Louise Penny, whose latest Inspector Gamache mystery, Glass Houses, is available at the Lennoxville Library. In fact, A Fatal Winter reveals several links to our local celeb. There is an acknowledgement of Ms.Penny’s generosity in supporting Malliet’s writing ambitions, and there is also a very strong endorsement from the Knowlton author herself.Of another work, Penny has said, “Rarely have I read descriptions that have left me gasping, in both their hilarity and their painful truth.” Max Tudor is a former MI5 agent who has heard the call and taken Holy Orders. He is now vicar of St.Edwold’s church in the village of Nether Monkslip in South West England.(Mind you, this “village” does have train service, which is more than most of us villagers can say.) But Max has not forgotten the skills he acquired at MI5, nor has he lost his love of the chase. These facts are not wasted on DCI Cotton of the Monkslip- super-Mare police. So when Oscar Footrustle, lord of nearby Chedrow Castle, is found murdered in his bed, and his twin sister Lady Leticia is found dead shortly thereafter, Cotton knows the man he wants on the inside.Ostensibly Father Max is brought in to offer advice on funeral arrangements and to provide grief counselling. He arrives to find the castle is full of the Footrustles’ children and grandchildren who have been summoned, much to their surpise, by Oscar (ante-mortem) from various places around the globe for a family Christmas celebration.Max quickly discovers that no one is interested in his ideas for funerals and that there is scant grief to counsel. Moreover, the siblings’ animosity towards each other is not much less than it had been towards their recently deceased parents. One of Malliet’s strengths is her drily humorous renditions of characters’ thoughts: “Max was a peacemaker by nature, and conflict of any size sparked an overwhelming need in him to intervene, to quell the disturbance.Max now called on all his acquired skills in calming troubled waters. After all, he reminded himself, he had faced down a variety of rancorous church committees, not to mention the notoriously cranky Nether Monkslip Book Club, whose members often came to grief in deciding on the monthly read.Dealing with this dysfunctional family, a murderous psychopath among them, should be easy by comparison.” Max’s cover is fully blown when Cotton invites him to sit in on the interviews with the survivors/witnesses/suspects.Everyone, including the servants, had hopes of receiving an inheritance, so they all had a motive to kill one or both of the twins. Moreover, most of them have had some = - re - 7 ~ var t nm ' 3 = IP Wal 7 bud hed p= experience in show business, so it is difficult to tell when they are acting and when they are not.Max’s worst fears are realized when there is another murder. While this death complicates matters, it also opens up new avenues of inquiry.A Fatal Winter is a fun read, or as much fun as one can expect when there are three deaths.A big part of the amusement comes from the major subplot.Father Max is unattached, dashingly handsome, a skilled dancer, and a lover of animals.None of this goes unnoticed by the women of the village. If Malliet were a man and let her male characters talk about women the way her women talk about Max, she would probably find herself being roundly denounced from the second-storey windows as a sexist swine.“If I thought I'd be in with a chance, I'd dump my old misery-guts of a husband and go after Father Max myself.” Readers are cautioned to have access to both an architectural and a horticultural dictionary.Malliet goes into considerable detail in her description of the castle and the gardens that appertain thereto. And like Louise Penny, she is well acquainted with good food.So keep the kitchen door locked when she is describing meals or trips to the bakery.—Vincent Cuddihy Follow The Sherbrooke Record on Facebook and Twitter! the lowest cost of living of any major city in Canada, Statistics Canada has also revealed that family incomes in the Eastern Townships are also well below that of other Quebec households, which are among the lowest in the country.According to Statistics Canada data released Wednesday, the median total household income in the region in 2015 is $53,336, considerably less than the $59,822 Quebec average.After-tax income of households in the region rests at $47,396, compared to an estimated $ 52,207 for other Quebec families. For Sherbrooke proper, the median total household income in 2015 was $51,706 with an after-tax average income of $45,946.In Magog, the median is $52,531 ($46,711 after tax).In the Drum- mondville area, median total household income was $50,390 ($44,959 after tax) Stats Can also points out that income growth among Quebec households has BU Donald Lecture series CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 community of Salluit as well as her experience as the recipient of the 2017 Global Teaching Prize, whichrecognizes one teacher worldwide who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. Finally, on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, been among the lowest in the country for ten years, according to the latest census data.Median income increased by almost 9 per cent in the ten years after 2005, compared to the 36.5 per cent increase that reached in $75,412 in Saskatchewan for the same period, an increase caused by the growth of the oil and natural gas sectors.Quebec ranks second last among the provinces and territories ahead of only New Brunswick, whose median income was $59,347, a difference of $475.The report highlights the 2005-2015 growth gap between the western and the eastern provinces of the country - with the exception of Newfoundland and Labrador, before the fall in oil prices. All provinces and territories experienced increases in the median household income, but there was considerable variation from one region to another. The growth of the petroleum industry in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador during these ten years boosted the median income in Canada from $63,457 to $70,336, an increase of 10.8 per cent."It's not just hydrocarbons, it's all the investments that accompany it, like construction and services to help the operation," said Statistics Canada's Chief of Revenue, Eric Olson. At the same time, the slowdown in the manufacturing sector that has taken place in Quebec and Ontario has had an impact on household income in these provinces.Ontario, which lost 318,000 jobs over the ten years, recorded the slowest revenue growth at 3.8 per cent. The median income still $74,287, left the province in sixth place.Ontario and Quebec are the two provinces with the lowest increase in household income over the decade but despite this, some census metropolitan areas in Quebec enjoyed impressive increases, particularly from mining. For example, the regions of Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d'Or, in the Abitibi region, saw a median income growth exceeding 15 per cent. They are closely followed by Sept-Îles (13.4 per cent) and Quebec City (11.1 per cent).1.2 million children live in poverty Almost one in four children in the country lives in poverty, a proportion that has been declining since the 1990s.Quebec has the lowest child poverty rate after Alberta (12.8 per cent), despite having the lowest family incomes in the country. Some 14.3 per cent of Quebec children live in low-income households, compared with 14.7 per cent of adults. This is due to the low cost of child care and higher child benefits in Quebec than in the rest of the country.Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are the two provinces with the highest rate of children living in poverty at 22.2 per cent. The overall rate of low-income households remained stable across the country, but is distributed differently than in 2005.Ontario had more low-income families in 2015, while the proportion decreased in Alberta.Census data include, for the first time, statistics on the savings of Canadians derived from information provided to the Canada Revenue Agency.Two-thirds of households contributed to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), Sherbrooke “orphans” were not children whose parents had died.Largely a result of sickness or poverty, the placement of children was often a response to the children’s behaviour or the could to make my life easier, but they did everything they could to make sure they met the requests and demands of the exhibitors, as they do every year.DEAR EDITOR, Tuesday's Record about Fire services merger a good thing, Hatley Township mayor says.Perhaps He should have said that it would be a good thing for those four municipalities who do not have a fire station or any equipment to speak of but I do not feel that buying out Peter to pay Paul is a good solution. The last I heard about the merger was that there was a petition in the fall of 2016 and the people in Stanstead Township were against such a merger.I believe that the petition was presented to the council to make them aware of [rica like to respond to the article in DEAR EDITOR; he Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) claims it is "the voice of English public education in Québec." Soon, there will be QESBA elections for president and vice-president.Some of the following questions were submitted to the candidates running, on October 13, 2015, prior to their webcast debate. Not They do this humbly and with com- radery, not only during the four days of the fair, but for weeks before.I believe that what they do and what they give of themselves to make “The Fair” agreeable for everyone gets forgotten or hidden in the hubbub of it all.For that reason, I would like to acknowledge what the directors and many volunteers do for our exhibitors and our guests, and to thank them for their hard work.I believe that anyone who would be interested in becoming a volunteer at Richmond Fair, would find that working with the directors and current volunteers would be a favourable experience.Thank you everyone.MAUREEN MURPHY-BLEMINGS er Fire services merger the voice of it's people. The three/ two vote happened due to the sickness of a councilor who was unable to attend the meeting and the third vote came from the mayor who was aware of the dissension of the public regarding this matter.Under the circumstances I do not feel that the mayor should have voted in favor of this matter. We have a very good fire department in Stanstead Township complete with fire stations, trucks, pumper and equipment with firemen available to run the department and they do a wonderful job. These are made available through taxation within the municipality. Why would they sell this off to the Regie?Would the municipality reimburse the people for money it receives from the sale of all of it's trucks and equipment?I believe that if the system is not broken why try to fix it?What would happen to our taxes as a result of having to cover the other municipalities who have no fire stations or equipment but would now have access to our equipment which is owned by the Regie?I foresee this as a major burden on this municipality.Another point that Mr Primeau made was that municipal councils were elected to be decision makers for the population but he didn't see how consulting the public would affect the agreement.I feel that the people who Questions for QESBA - president J.Maccarone one question was answered. They were copied to the minister of education, chair of the Lester B.Pearson School Board in Nov.2014, my platform called for withdrawing membership to the association and putting over $200,000 into our schools. There was some similar talk with the English Montreal School Board whose fees today are $211,432.06.Presently, the QESBA is without a vice- president (Suanne Stein Day) and an executive director (Marcus Tabachnick). The former was found guilty by the Pearson's ethics commissioner of violating the boards Code of Ethics ; the latter quit in April, but was praised by president Jennifer Maccarone for defeating school board reform Bill fail.ONE COLUMN, FOUR VOICES By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco ) This summer has been a season of 1 weddings. After Thanksgiving I will have officiated at eight marriage ceremonies since the first in June. One was in a church but the rest were outside, in wineries or gardens. One ceremony was on top of Mount Megantic. Each was unique, with special music, poetry, and symbols.I truly enjoy getting to know the couples and sharing these special moments. The one common feature was the promises shared between each couple. As they said their vows, they held hands, looked into each other's eyes, and promised to love their partner. The words they used may have been quite different, but the hope and joy were universal. The word "promise" should not be used lightly. At summer camp I often hear younger children talking about “pinkie promises” made while they lock their baby fingers together.Usually these promises are taken very seriously.Maybe if adults did this, especially our politicians, we wouldn't have so many broken promises.I think of all the treaty promises made to our First Nations peoples. But I digress.I would rather focus on the positive.A promise involves hope, courage, perseverance, and commitment. When we make a promise we should dedicate our energy to keeping that promise and living it out in our lives. Some don't like making promises. They don't want to fail.I would rather lock pinkies and live in hope.some hidden quality not yet fully exploited.A future gold mine is promising to its investors.A student with high marks may 7.To be full of promise is to hold Opening to the Spirit Today’s word: Promise be a promising future engineer.A flowerbed of perennials in early spring has us anticipating the promise of bouquets on the table.Sometimes the anticipation is the most pleasurable part.I am thinking particularly of young children.Their gifts and talents are still to be developed, yet their curiosity and boundless energy capture our imagination and enthrall us with the promise of further developments.Sometimes we think, once we have arrived at our middle years and beyond, that the promising part of our futures has come to an end. However, one of the most attractive parts of the message of Jesus for me is that we each continue to hold promise up until the day we die.We may have a hidden talent, an unexploited knowledge or an untapped capacity for offering encouragement or concern. In our senior years we can learn to drive a car, stop an addictive habit or go back to school. We can take up a new hobby or begin a new business. The only limits to the promise we each hold is our imagination and our capacity to persevere and keep a hopeful attitude towards life.I look forward to discovering the hidden promise of all I meet, both young and old.I wonder what hidden promise I am holding right now and where that might lead me by next year?) What does it means to live a life of promise? What promises do we make to each other and ourselves, as individuals and as members of a spiritual community. How do we help each other fulfill them? And, what do we do when promises made - by us or to us - are broken? As children we practiced the power of keeping our word, in large ways and small."Promise?" we'd ask.To seal the deal, we'd insist: "Criss-cross your heart and hope to die if you tell a lie." Among my siblings, the promis-ee would circle Brg THÉ = Or fil: > see : SHREW Tey 3 RS CSG TS the promis-er to insure no fingers were crossed behind the back. And, true to life if not our words, some promises were broken - leaving us to deal with betrayal, our own or others. The act of making a promise comes from a place of hope, trust and vision.I believe it is one of the strongest tools we have for making and maintaining our connections with others. If I take a job, or sign onto a task, it is not only to accomplish the task of the moment, but to keep faith with the goal, with those who may work with me, and those who will benefit from our efforts. We make vows to each other, swear oaths, and give assurances based on faith and trust that life Will unfold in such a way, and our promises we'll keep.Sometimes we lose faith, or a promise made in good faith becomes more burdensome to fulfill than we are able.As life unfolds, it challenges us to respond to our own and each other's failings with compassion, forgiveness, and reconciliation. This month our Jewish siblings in faith celebrate the High Holy Days, beginning with Rosh Hashanah, the New Year, followed by Yom Kippur and the day of Atonement, called the Days of Turning. It's a time for soul-searching and renewal, acknowledging the limitations and shortcomings we all experience as humans trying to live up to life's promise of goodness and love. What promises would you renew?Which ones might you need to renegotiate? And the promises you make to yourself, in your heart of hearts. How will you keep them?hope that you recognize that the day ahead holds promise. We usually have some idea about what lies before us.We can think of the people we will spend time with and the tasks we will complete. Some things look obviously promising.Maybe you have some time planned with ) Wherever you are reading this, I a friend, or maybe this is the day that you have decided you will clear the vegetables out of the bins in your fridge and make a big pot of soup.Maybe you have an important task at work or maybe you have the delight of a day filled with leisure that stretches before you. Some things we anticipate with dread and we struggle to find where the promise might lie.We wait for test results that we expect will bring bad news.We worry about upcoming encounters with difficult people, be they family, or work colleagues, or other people in our life that we did not choose.Whether you approach the day with optimism or pessimism, whether you anticipate with delight the things that will happen or live with the fear of imagined outcomes, there is one promise that always holds true.Whatever is going on in your life, God is right there with you.You can share your delight and say “Thank you!”.You can share your worries and say “Please, help me.”.The promise that God loves you and will be with you through your trials is one that does not fail. The promise that there will be peace and delight, when the time is right for this, will never be left unfulfilled.Wherever you are, and whatever you are doing, the day ahead is filled with promise. One word, four voices - now it's your turn to reflect on the question: What does it mean to live a life of promise?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Hatley, Waterville & North Hatley United North jumped to four hearts, unsure what to do if East bid four spades — but that never happened.East made a cautious and costly pass.Four spades looked almost certain to be made with the favorable position of both minor suits, but in a 16-table duplicate, only one player was in four spades.North led the heart king.South overtook with the ace and shifted to his singleton diamond.Declarer took North’s jack with dummy's ace, then fatally ran the spade jack.North won, cashed the club ace and diamond king, North 09-15-17 & Q YKQ62 + KJ95 Sd AQ74 West East & À K 10962 & J87 ¥ 10 vJ4 + Q763 + A 1082 & 52 &KJ98 South & 543 YV A98753 + 4 & 10 63 Dealer: South Vulnerable: East-West South West North East 29 24 49 All Pass Opening lead: 4 A then gave partner a ruff for down two.(Yes, it should have been down three.)
