of Charles J.Guiteau, the assassin of President Garfield, is in the possession of a New York physician, causes little surprise here, for it has been known by many in this city that, when the flesh was removed from the skull in the process of articulating the skeleton, the United States anatomist, Dr.Schafhirt, preserved the same.He was careful to retain in the flesh in all their naturalness the features of the assassin.To effect this end he denuded the skull with as little cutting as pos- gible, sewed the parts together with stitches almost invisible and stuffed the subject with materials that supplied to pertection the place of the missing bone frame.When that branch of his work was completed he placed the head in a bath of alcohol in a white glass jar about eight inches in diameter by twelve inches in length, which was hermetically sealed.Enough of the flesh was left to show the mark of the rope that strangled the assassin.For many months the doctors had on exhibition for the gratification of curious friends the ghastly spectacle, and it was the general remark of those who saw his head in Dr.Schafhirt’s private operating room, in the Medical Museum, that the head swimming in the jar of alcohol looked as lifelike as the day the noose launched Guiteau into eternity.There is no question about the officials of the National Medical Museum being aware what Schafhirt had done in this matter and of his having used government materials and time in carrying out his object.A majority of the clerks and officers of that branch of the Surgeon- General's office were interested spectators of the doctor’s work while it was being completed.Nature Makes no Mistakes, Nature's own remedy for bowel complaints, cholera morbus, cholic, cramps, vomiting, sea sickness, at Seca.BALTIMORE, June 23.—Vapt.Hummel, of the British steamer Lero, which arrived this evening from Rotterlain, reports that on Tuesday last, at about six o'clock in the evening, his vessel was in collision with the British brigantine Aldwyth, of Prince Edward Island,which was carrying a cargo of sugar from San Lucia to New York.The collision occurred off Cape Henlopen in a dende fog.Three of the brigantine’s crew jumped aboard the Lero, but though the steamer laid around for several hours nothing could be seen of the brigantine, The only damage to the Lero was the loss of her foretopmast.Advancement of Science.New York, June 22.—The meeting of American Association for the Advance: ment of Science will be held in this city from August 10 to August 16.Application has been made to the principal railroad companies throughout the country for reduced fares for the benefit ot those desiring to attend the meeting, which promises to be the most important ever held by the Association.The local committee is arranging for a series of excursions to places of general interest in the vicinity of New York.The details of the concessions granted by the railroad companies will be communicated to members and others interested by Mr.B.Southwick, Arsenal Building, Central Park, New York.Guns for the Islanders.San Francisco, Cal., June 23.—Indica- tions are growing that the rivalry of American capitalists who desire to control the sugar trade of the Sandwich Islands is likely to plunge the Kingdom of Kalakaua into civil war.The clearance papers at the San Francisco Custom Mouse show that the steamer Australia, which sailed to-day for Honolulu, carried a large quantity of arms and ammunition.This.is.considered as very significant when taken into consideration with the revolutionary feeling that is said to exist in the Hawaiian Islands, and itis fully expected that recourse will be had to arms in order to depose the King.The shipments included eighty cases, in which were nearly 1000 Winchester repeating rifles and 164,000 cartridges.These articles were all consigned to old missionary merchants.It is among this element of the population that the most revolutionary feelings exist.It is said that the scheme is that the Princess Kaiulun will be proclaimed Queen, or that Sam Wilder, who is now in England, will be elected President during his absence.Mr.Wilder's son was a passenger to Honolulu by the steamer, as were Abraham Hoffnung, Hawaiian charge d’affaires in London, and E.C.McFuarland.Large shipments of arms and ammunition have also been made to Honolulu by the sailing vesse s Forest Queen and Colusa.The value of the shipments made exceeded $0,000.A Dunkard Meeting.WaApasH, Ind., June 22—The annual meeting of the German Baptist or Dun- kard Church of Northern Indiana has just closed in Miami County.‘There was an immense attendance.Elder Robert Miller, a noted orator and debater from Illinois, conducted the ineet- ings.‘The services each day were preceded by feet-washing, the ancient custom that the Dunkards have never departed from.,There is nothing immodest in the operation.The men and women, armed with basins and towels, approach each other, the women washing the women’s feet and the men those of the men.The footis simply suspended, quickly washed and dried.Following this ceremony comes the Lord’s Supper, in which all join, and then there is an adjournment until With the morning comes a There arc 2,500 members of this peculiar sect in Wabash and Miami Counties alone.They are considerably divided in many of their views, and the different factions are known as the “Progressive,” “Conservative,” and “Old Order.’ The Progress.v2 element has sensible views in the matter of dress, which it leaves entirely to individual judgment and taste.Members of the Old Order believe in the primitive ways amd forins, and adhere tenaciously to them at all times.The men dress plainly, the women in brown or gray costumes, with old-fashioned poke bonnets.The children are often seen wearing these bonnets.As regards the future state, the Dunkards believe that tney will be restored to God's love and presence after death.The holy kiss is still practiced to some extent, members of eaeh sex kissing each other.Basket and soup meetings are very common among the Dunkards.They are thrifty people, and generally manage to accumulate a liberal supply of this world's goods._—_——-————————— with a very large increase in acreage.In portions of Wisconsin and Minnesota the crop has probably been damaged a small per cent.In Northern Iowa the month of May and the first week in June have been the dryest known since 1376, scarcely a drop of rain having fallen in that time.Last week tliere was a three days’ rain, which will help out small grain wonderfully.The straw will be short, but will probably fill well.A good mauy fields of barley have been plowed up and sown with millet.Prospects for corn have not been better since 1880.In many sections timothy hay will not be half a crop, as the rain came too late to do any good.Along the line of the Northern Pacific railroad advices do not vary materially from those publishe:l last week.Along the Little Falls & Dakota branch’ local showers have benefited certain looali- ties, while others are suffering.In Western Minnesota and on the Fergus & Black ill branch, extending to Mil- nor, hot and dry weather prevailed during the EARLY PART OF LAST WEEK, but since then rains have fallen, and the prospect is much improved, and a good average crop is expected.In the Red River Valley, along the line of the Duluth & Manitoba branch, reports are all- favorable.From Dakota very favorable reports continue to come in, with few exceptions.In localities of limited area they have sometimes not had enough rain.In regard to the alleged damage to crops west of the Missouri river, the division superintendent of the Northern Pacific telegraphs as follows : I have just returned from a trip over the division.I never saw crops looking better at this tune of year.There area few late fields, but in the maiority wheat is up high enough to furnish shade for the soil, and is looking very healthy.Wednesday was about the first hot day we have had, and while rain would be very acceptable, a weck or ten days of such weather would do no great harm.They had more wind than usual, which has dried up the ground very fast.The weather up to June 10 was all that could be desired—plenty of rain, tfoilowed by low temperature.This country can stand any amount of rain, aud it can also stand a gool doal of drouth.—— IMPORTS.Per steamship Montreal, from Liver- ol for Montreal, F.Bouchette master, Torrance&co agents—Desaulniers F& co 3 pkgs mdse;
