church parades by our voluateers, Now, if this is not etarinz at a gate and awallow- ing a eaw-mill.What ie the difference between discoursing the Composition of Dadley Buck in & church or at a church parade, except it be that thcee who are able to pay pew rent can enjoy the luxury, while the unfortunate toiler who cannot pay their focting in a church must be deprived of the pleasure?Consistency is a jewel.ToILER.Letter from Mr.John Crawford, Tothe Editor of THE HERALD.My remarks at the recent annual meeting of “La Banque du Peugple” as reported, fail to convey a correct impression.I stated that Mr.Heniker, president of the Eastern Townships Bank, was endeavoring to units the bauks in su application to Parliament for a special Act, sanc:ioning the principle of pension or superannuation funds now becoming 80 general, such legislation preventing the necessity cf separate application , with their attendazt delays and expenses, I entertain not a ehadow of doubt but that in a comparatively short time there will not be a bauk in the Dominion which will hesitate to recognize the expediency and importance of making some provision for officials and employes.: ‘The reciprocal relationship which exists between employer and employe is now bing more perfectly appreciated, and it is esfe to predict that before long the ex- ampls of our b:nks will be imitated by most of, and eventually by all, our public corporations.hen the adoption of such policy becomes general, we shall hear less of official dishonesty and much more of mntusl esteem. Moreover, it will prove an effective antidote to comwunistic demagogism.JNO.CRAWFORD, Verdun, 9th March, 1887.St.Ann’s Ward.To the Editor of THz HERALD, Srr,—In your issue of Wednesday last, I sec a letter over the signature of‘ J, Oma,” referring to the coming election of an alderman for theabove influentisl ward.In that letier he mentions the name of Mr.Danl.McClanaghan as & most fitting and proper person to be put forward by the workingmen to represent them in the City Council. Now, I, as an Irish emigrant who has had some twenty years’ experience of this “ Canada of Oura,” can safaly say thai no bstter nor more straightforward man conld be put forward than the same Dani.McClanaghan.He ma man that has the courage of his convictions, and is not afraid to give exprescion to them.He has at all times proved and showed himself a friend to the workingman, and many à poor Irishman—and I “might add Bcoich aud English—have been indebied to him for the kindly reception extended to them on their arrival in the city. This, I am certain, can ba vouched for by the immigration officers here, who could teetify to his warm-heartedness in ueing his best influence in obtaining for them situations and employmert on their arriving here—strangers in a strange land, Mr.McClanaghan, being the builder up of bis own fortune, he does not forget the deys gone by, when, as an Irish emigrant, he came frum the green fields of Tyroue to delve and werk, to carve out 8 fuiure and a home for himself. At all times be has been found ready to assist the needy. No appeal to him for charity has ever been made in vain ; always willing to give sage counsel to those less ex- perierced than himself, and aseict to their profit and advancement.Isgree thoroughly with your correspondent that lawyers and politiciana should find no favor with the electors of St.Ann’s Ward. What is wanted is a man of the people, for the people, and with the people, One who will look ager their welfare in the City!Council and help to put a stop to the jobbing that has been carried on there for scme time past.To obtain this object Mr, McClana- ghan would fill the biti.I am certain that Mr.McClsnaghan’s record is weil known to the goou peop'e of St, Ann’s Ward, and that they will give him a “‘ Cead Mille Failthe,” should he seek our suffrages for aldermanic honers.Yours, ete, Caxrox. The Public Schiols. To the Rditor of TH: HERALD, short time since I made some reference to the Montreal Public Schools through the columns of THe HErALD, aud promised to refer to the subject again. The letter in question dealt especially with the Protestant Public Schools, but I am informed that about the same eystem and stule of things prevail in the Roman Catholic as in the Protestant Bcheols. It seems to be high time that the taxpayers shouli know semething of what they pay eo very dear for, and at the same :irme have virtuaily no voice or ray In the control and manage ment.We have had many large and costly structures erected for sshool purposes, and we know iittle if anything as to their cost or in what manner the contracts for their erecticn have been given out. Many of these echool buildings are quite unfitied for the purposes for which they were intended, and, to eay the least, quite uneuitabie for the teaching and training of the rising generation of our city, Some of the schoolhou es have neither the neces sary grounds or conveniences attached to make them in any way adapted for the training of the young, The parties who have had the.erection of these buildings seemingly did not know whether or not “they were erecting a barn, prison or a schoolhouse, judging Tron what we sec around us.It is evident that our School Comumiesioners kuow very little, if ever they knew anything, about a schoolhouse or the advantages gained by contact therefrom, judging by the way the school system is worked and managed in tbis city. There ia no reason why a clergyman just out from the old country should, almost as soon &a he lands here, be placed upon the echool board, nor is it & reason because euch and such a person happens to be an alderman that he is fitted to b: raised to the d:znity of a school commis~ sioner. There is One thing quite certain that these clergymen and aldermen would not ba p:aced upon the board by the votes * of the people if thy had their say in the selection of the same. These imported clergymen and civic officials have quite enough to do to attend to their own particular functions and spheres of duty without assuming and taking upon themselves these important pcsitions. We have political meeiinge about trade and commerce, meetings about floods snd carnivale, etc, but we never hear of any gatherings of the People to take into consideration the position and working of our schools, Have We ro interest in this important matter ?Are we not intelligent ezongh toappreciate In some small degree what our ohiidren requi ‘e to make them better and bappier ?We usve only oce High Scheol in this City end that ia a achool for the rich ard the ¢ up town people,” no: fr tte poor cr for those who reside at Foit St.Charles, Hocuclaga and the extreme portions Of the city.Ard yet this school is supported by public mocey.Instead of having only one High School we should Lave half a dozer, aud we require that number and would have them :f the mass of the people had their eay in the matter. Our schools can never bs a succes aud credit t9 ua antil such times as the people have a voice in their management, of which they are deprived by a system that is well adapted for the past centuries, instead of an age of liberiy, light and advancement, of which we prate so much and do so littie to extend.Wa hear a great deal now-a-days about the working man.Is the wo:king man fully alive to his in- tereats in this direction? He talks a great deal about his wagse, but does he think enough about the proper liberal education of his children ?Ycurs respectfully, Ax OLp TEACHER, Montreal, 9th March, 1887.PROPRIETARY MEDICINES.A visit to Dr.Green’s Laboratory, at Woodbury, N.J., has considerably changed our views, and especially our prejudices in rezard to what are generally known as ¢¢ Standard Patent Medicines.” Of course we Aro getting to that age in life when we are forced to conclude Life itself is a humbug, and naturally distrust anything that has not withstood and tried experiences.Being ® physician, I had the curiosity to know how euch a sale cf two medical preparations could be sustained for 0 many years, The perfoct system upon which the business is conducted, and the pharmaceutical arrangements for the manufacture of the two recipes with which we were made acquainted, are sufficiently convincing to us that the Avcrst FLower, for Dyspepsia and Liver Complaints, acd BoscHgr’s GerMAN Syrvp, for Throat and Lung Troubles, were for the complaints they ara recommended, most excellent remedies, and only regret that in much of our practice medical ethics prevent us from prescribing them without making the formulas zublic When we were shown the great quantity of voluntary letters having been forwarded Dr.Green from all parts of the country and from all classes of people, iawyers, ministers and doctors, giving a description of their ailments, testimonials of their cures, etc., I feel like endorsing Dr.Green’s suggestion that the Government accept such valuable formulas and license them for general use by giving protection to the inventor eame as patents generally —[Copied from N, Y.Druggists” Circular of Uctober, 1886, SUNDAY POST OFFICE WORK.Over Three Mnndred Men Employed at the Coztral Office and Stations.Au
