the road, and the citizens .are astonished at the progress that has been made since last spring when the construction was practically begun. The contractor has spared neither pains nor money in making the enterprise a success, as is* shown by the marvellously short time occupied in its construction, shorter, perhaps, than that occupied in the building of any other Canadian road of equal length. The COSTLY CANINE, Latur et al vs.Lippe—On the twentv- fifth June, 1886, Maric Latour, wife of Noel Gougeon, a laborer, was proceeding along Lusignan street, when she was attacked by a vicious dog, the property of Camille Lippe, a merchant in that neigl - borhood. The brute bit her severely on the arm and she was with difliculty rescued by some women who had been attracted to the spot by hercries. She was removed to her home and a doctor called in.Her injuries were found te be severe, so much so that she was for several weeks confined to her bed, and has since continued to feel great pain in the arm.She now brings suit for $350 damages against Lippe, although the latter had paid the doctor's bill up to the date of the writ. She further alleges that she was debarred from attending to her household duties, which had to be attended to by ber daughter, and thereby lost $1 a day which the latter was in the habit of earning, and contributing to the household expenses; also that the dog was known to be a vicious one, having already bitten other persons, to the knowledge of the defendant who, nevertheless, neglected to chain or muzzle the animal. The defendant did not deny the facts and offered $50as compensation for all injuries sustained and $10.25 costs, This the plaintiffs refused to accept. The evidence sustained plaintiffs’ allegations, but as it wus established that Mrs.Gougeon was an old lady subject to chronic rhumatism, the judge was not satisfied that she suffered damage to the extent of $350.He, however, thought $50 an insufficient tender and awarded her a further sam of 8100 and costs.LIABILITY OF A UN(VERSAI.LEGATEE Dela Durantie vs.Nobert et al —On the 17th June, 1885, one Adeline Sauva- geau, spinster, made her last will and Testament, whereby she appointed Hubert Nobert and bis wife Odile Sauÿa- geau her universal legatees. She died in November following. For several years previous to her death she had been living with plaintiff, who now sues the defendants, as such legatees, for four years’ rent of a room at $3 a month, and for care and attendance during her last illness.Defendants plead compensation for the value of furniture left by deceased, money lent to her by plaintiff and domestic work done by her for him.Tne evidence partially substantiated plaintiff's claim, and defendants failed to prove theirs.Judgment went, therefore, for plaintiffs for the rent and $40 for four months’ care and attendance, in all $184, less $23, value of the furniture left by deceased and retained by plaintiff, leaving a balance in his favor of $159 and costs.PRIVILEGED CLAIMS: In re Gariepy, insolvent, and Loranger et al., petitioners.—Petitioners, a firm of solicitors, have a claim of almost $1,200 against the insolvents’ estate, of which they claim $381.75 are privileged, being law costs incurred in an action in separation from bed and board between Cariepy and his wife, in which they were retained. They contend that such costs were incurred in the interests of the estate, and consequently of all tie creditors.A dividend (privileged) wus declared in their favor in October last, but it was contested by one Pa- quette, on the ground that the praticien had not yet made his report. On the 26th December last, another dividend was declared of $127.25, which petitioners received. They now asked that the Court order the curator to pay over to them the balance of their claim, 2234.50.His Honour dismissed the petition on the ground that the Insolvent a signed before the Rapport de Praticien, who was charged with the prise des rroits et rprises of the wife was made ; that the udgment whereby the seized the goods of Gariepy was of no utility, save to establish the amount of her claim against her husband, and was of no utility to the other creditors ; that the principle of costs being privileged does not apply except when incurred for the benefit of the whole.AN INFORMALITY.Trust & Loan Co.vs.Montbriand—The plaintiffs, under a suit of venditioni ex- ponas, some time since, caused to be sold at sheriff's sale certain property of a judgment debtor.Montbriand purchased, but afterwards refused to complete the purchase.Plaintiffs consequently asked for an order for a sale at folle enchere at defendant's risk, which demand was yesterday refused, Judge Jette holding that the sale was null, the writ therefore not having been properly attested.A QUESTION OF COSTS.Cauchon vs.Grey Nuns.—Defendants had filed an opposition to a sale of property by plaintiff, the opposition was dismissed and the present action is for the costs thereon.Judgment for $62.57.INSOLVENCY.Cooke, White & Co., of this city, grocers, have assigned at the request of Light- bound, Ralston & Co.Liabilities about $12,000.In re B.H.Lecompte, Charles Desmar- teau has been appointed curator. In re L.À.Sauve, Kent & Turcotte have been appointed curators, In re technicalities. He did not know whether it had been authorized by the City Council or not.The City Clerk says that it was an oversight on his part, as he was under the impression that it bal been ratified by the Council. The latest news in, the matter of the Chief of Police is that Lieut.-Colonel Voht, of Quebec, has applied for the position. In the matter of the Mayoralty the general opinion is that if Mayor Abbott consents to run he will be re-elected by acclamation. It is said that if he does not consent to run ex-Mayor Beaugrand will be a candidate.Alderman Morris has declared his his many noble qualities ani characteristics as a business man, explorer, politician, warrior, philosopher, author, and above all, and more than all, as a Christian, as illustrated by his unavearing devotion to the spread of the Gospel and the fostering care and attention displayed by him on all occasions towards the missionaries. The founding of the city of Quebec remains a standing monument to most enjoyable features was the banjo duet, gracefully rendered by Miss and Mr.Gordon.Miss Maltby delighted the audience by the rich and arch rendering of her ditferent songs.Mrs.Page-Thrower also sang. The Chalmers Church Quartette party did much appreciated service, filling in their own appointed numbers and also taking the place of the absent Mctill party. The tableaux, of a pronounced moral services will he held at Lachute, on the occasion of the opening of the new Baptist Church at the West End.It is a square building of red brick and is admirably appointed for the purposes for which it has been constructed. If anything, however, the ceiling is rather tou Jow.The church has two entrances from the main street, and ig laid out in the centre as an am- phiteatre. The pulpit, or rather reading the Vies / efficacv4 des!:, is on a nlatform almost at the ! southwest corner, underneath is the baptistery.Converging towards which on either side are rows of seats that may be shut off by the folding doors for class rooms or church meetings, or by whose extent the accommodation may be reduced in the event of a very small ai- tendance.Behind the pulpit is a vestry and the accommodations and apartments generally are very satisfactory. The seats are in hard wood, oiled and varnished ; the ceilings and walls, above the wainscoting, are delicately tinted, and the windows are in small alternate squares of white and colored glass.Rev.Mr.Higgins and his congregation have been most energetic in their prosecution of church work, and to their exertions is due much of the progress that and as his mind reverted to she Duchess, who had so opportunely left them, it occurred to him that in the fitness of things Marcia was suited to be a Duchess, if not indeed obviously intended for that exalted position. And this was a dangerous frame of mind, both for Marcia on her part and for Douglas on his own, And as I do not intend to take down my Shakespeare to remind myself ‘tow Othello and Desdemona fell in love, [ will not pursue the parallel, although in many points it would be similar, or to say the least, suggestive. For Sir Hugo 1ad many points in him which resembled Jrabantio, although he lacked much of hat old gentleman's dignity. How the conversation might have end- od or into what channels it might have strayed I am not prepared to state, but it vas interrupted by the appearance on he scene of Lady Gwendoline Anstice, vho burst into the room like a tornado, n quest, or pretended quest, of a novel vhich she thought she must have left ‘ere, plunged at once into the conversa- ion, and began to flounaer about in it fter her own most helpless fashion, and -vinced not the least intention of taking ier departure.Lady Gwendoline talked in much the ume monotonous fashion as that in hich a water-spout with a leak in it ill drip in rainy weather, and I believe vas under the honest elelusion that she ad exceptional conversational gifts.farcia did not like to go, and Douglas 1 his part saw that to take his depar- re would be a false move.So they sat ill, and Lady Gwendoline cackled to em.1 dislike slang, but can conscientiously eclare that cackle is the only word in we English language which expresses \\y meaning.; And bere let me give a word of advice , ladies who, finding themselves, let 5 kindly say, nearer thirty-two or ren thirty-five than they care to gener- ly admit, and who, having read of ‘adame de Stael and other such orna- ents of French salons, endeavor to culti- ite the art of conversation—perhaps the 1ost difficult of all arts, and one in which ie very greatest men have often con- sicuously failed.A young lady should it talk as if she felt it incumbent upon or to join in the conversation ; on the -ntrary, she should rather endeavor to iy just enough to show that she is fol- wing it and is interested by it.She is sually troublesome if she endeavors to :ke a leading part, and still more trou- esome if she asks frivolous questions. Now Lady Gwendoline would without ssitation have plunged into the lunar weory with an Astronomer Royal, or we taken Mr.Browning to task over ‘gs Paracelsus. She talked for the sake talking, and her conversation was con- ‘quently as vacant and wearying as the nistle of a railway porter when he has thing to do but to loiter about the atform with his hands in his pockets. On the other hand, Lady Gwendoline ustice knew very well how to manage a upid man, and if she found herself out her depth with John Douglas, could we succeeded to a marvel with Lord orwich. And ifthe truth must be told, Lady .wendoline had set her cap at Lord orwich, and ably assisted by her other, Lady Deepdale (a match-maker : wide experience and acknowletiged 1ccess), was at present engaged in lay- x siege to that eligible young noble- This made her, of course, anxious to moy Marcia, who, she took it for grant- : had, as she would have phrased it self, intended business with Lord sr wich lust night, and was only keep- or i.er hand with this young barris- “in the morning. So she remained out mere spite, or as ladies, I believe, term «y.aravation,”—the corresponding \\ nericanese is, as I understand, “cuss- |ness, —pouring out a ceaseless flood nothings until the luncheon-bell rang. The party at lunch included Sir Hugo, course, Douglas, and nearly all the lies, from her Grace downwards, and “hough most ofthe men were asent — THE MONTREAL HERALD AND Lord Norwich came in from his morning’s sport with a strong aroma about him of tobocco-smoke and the stable, not unmixed with a strong flavor, in which an experienced nose would at once have detected the peculiar fragrance of the badger, an animal ranking in this particular gift of nature next only to the pole-cat.An awkward attempt to mask his morning pursuits with eau de cologne had only intensified the evidence against him and aggravated the offence. He made himself, however, entertaining after his own fashion to Marcia, so that her father was greatly pleased, and began to consider that his self-sacrifice in leaving Boodle’s would, like other virtuous actions, have its own reward—a portion of which he anticipated in the shape of some peculiarly choice Madeira, thoughtfully tendered him by the head butler.Lunch ended as lunch ought to, it is a meal which is somehow understood to be like breakfast, with no definite beginning or end, and consequently not requiring the solemnity of initial or final invocation or thanksgiving, even although a bishop may be present in the full glory of his gaiters and upright collar. The guests straggled out as they straggled in, and Marcia soon found herself dressed for a cold day, and writing under the colonnade for Lady St.Austell, with whom she was to drive down to the bridge and so across the river, and back through the woods. She had barely time to admire the indications given by the long colonnade of its summer glories, before the victoria arrived, and Marcia found herself side by side with her kindly hostess, covered with a rug of priceless silver fox, and rattling briskly down the avenue, glorious even in winter, past the home-farm and the kangaroo sheds, over the lake, past the rookery and the deer, and so at last in the open road. And here it was, when the rattle of the feet of the stout little cobs rendered the conversation inaudible to the solemn and self-absorbed occupants of the box that Lady St.Anstell took up her parable.I will not undertake to describe her ladyship's manner or method. Each in its way was perfect. She was kindness itself to Marcia,Espeaking to her in the manner of a mother, which she was able to assume at once, by explaining that the rug which Marcia so much admired consisted of skins perhaps the most prized in the world, because the rarest, with the exception of sable and ermine. They were trophies of the chase, brought homegby ber son from the extreme north of Canada—in fact, out of the Hudson’s Bay territory ; and so from eulogy of her son’s skill and power of endurance as a Nimrod, she glided into a discreet praise of young Norwich, whose many manly virtues she extolled with the utmost tact. She had heard that he rode magnificently to hounds, and had ridden second in his own horse for the Grand Military at Sandown, securing it the next year on a chestnut, the property of his Colonel, and so vicious as to be a terror to the oldest rough-riders at Knightsbridge and Windsor.- This led her to descant not only upon Lord Norwich’s excellent qualities, but .also upon his position, with its wealth and responsibilities—wealth almost beyond the power of man to exhaust, and possibilities that would be infinite if only his undoubted natural abilities were stimulated and directed into the proper channel by sympathy and tact. This eulogy, though most adroitly planned and phrased, somehow hung fire with Marcia, who could not help thinking for the life of her the immense difference, when all was said, that separated Lord Norwich, with all his good nature and versatility, from the reserved and masterful John Douglas. It was the difference almost between Prince Rupert and John Hampden—each of whom was beyond question the highest ornament of the side on which he drew his sword.I wish to say nothing unkind of Lord Norwich.I will prove as much by declaring my conviction that he was brave, generous, and utterly incapable of anything unworthy either in act or thought, differing herein from many other young men of his age and liable to his temptations. But in her own mind Marcia never even dreamed of comparing him with Douglas.Indeed, the two men were so utterly dissimilar in every way that the only comparison was one which intensified the contrast. So that when Lady Austell began to somehow suggest that Lord Norwich, with his title, his wealth, his infinite good-nature, and his many sterling qualities, would make an excellent husband, and deserved a wife who would appreciate him and stimulate him to something higher and more worthy of his abilities than the chase and the racecourse, Marcia hardly, if at all, caught the drift of her ladyship’s praise of this young man; and while agreeing with all that fell from her hostess of well- deserved encomium, failed to see how it in any way concerned herself, until Lady St.Austell, in the most simple manner possible—and truth to tell, with almost Bismarkian bluntness— came straight to the point by expressing her conviction, in fact, she might say her knowledge, that Lord Norwich admired Marcia greatly, and that he would be, apart altogether from his position, a husband of whom any girl might be proud. This fairly startled Marcia out of all her usual self-possession, and she found herself almost stammering out that she was fully alive to these excellent qualities which Lord Norwich undoubtedly possessed, and which lay evidently and unmistakably upon the surface, but that the idea of becoming Lady Norwich had never crossed her mind, and took her entirely by surprise.Wherein she was speaking the exact truth, as young ladies usually do when an intelligible proposition is laid before them which requires an immediate answer, and, if I may say so, takes them unawares.Marcia could only murmur something in general praise of the object of discussion which she did with obvious sincerity. For his frankness and good- nature were beyond all question genuine, and Marcia felt honestly that her ladyship had gone little, if at all, In her praise further than the limits of exact truth. So she could only say that it was impossible to meet Lord Norwich without seeing at once his many admirable qualities, and above all his utter absence of anything like egotism, his evident kindness of heart, and his extreme good-nature.And as Marcia put all this in her own way, instead of in the phraseology in which I have chosen to summarize it, Lady St.Austell had the penetration to see that she was saying exactly whatshe meant, and had also the tact to divert the conversation into other channels, and for the present to wait upon events instead of precipitating them.(TO BE CONTINUED.) — — DEPARTMENT OF RArLwAays AND CANALS Orrawa, May 7th, 1887.Messrs.Fulford & Co., Brockville, Ont.: Gents,—I am very glad to give you today the testimony that “Nasal Balm?” has comMPETELY cured mv catarrh, from which Thave suffered for nearly three | years, i Yours very truly, ' L.D.DION.Dept.Railways and Canals.1 DAILY COMMERCIAL GAZETTE, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, MEDICAL.Do you feel dull, languid, low- spirited, lifeless, and indiscribably able number of these symptoms, Discovery acts powerfully upon miserable, both physically and you are suffering from that most the Liver, and through that great mentally ; Dispatch to Montgomery Advertiser: The perpetrator of the butchery by which a woman was sacrificed to fanaticism, an outline of which was telegraphed to the Advertiser yesterday, is William W.Jordan, who claims Shreveport, La, as his home.He insists that he is the law-giver Moses returned to earth and delegated by the Supreme Being to save tlie world, and especially the Hebrew race.It seems that he has been in this city for the last eight or nine months teaching his diabolical doctrines to a score or more of half- demented and superstitious negroes whom he has organized into a society called by him and them “The True Children of the Living God.” Mary Moore, one of the three witnasses to this inhuman crime and the only member of the society whom your correspondent has heard talk, seems to believe implicitly that Jordan is a supernatural being, deriving his power and authority direct from God.She says that Jordan reads the Bible as she never heard man read before, and that while reading his face shines like the sun, and great sparks of fire are continually emitted from the hairs of his head. She says that ever since she had known him, nearly a year, he had been obliged to use a crutch to walk, until yesterday, when he came into the house, and, taking the crutch in both hands, broke it as if it were a straw, and, throwing it into the fire, he began to dance and sing, saying that Jehovah had quickened his limbs. They had been burning sacrifice all night Saturday night, she said, at Mrs.Jeffries’.They went to her house about four o'clock Saturday morning. When asked of what the sacrifice consisted, she said of “ Bibles dipped in blood and water.” We burned all the Bibles except one.Mr.Jordan told us, she continued, that whatever was going to happen would happen this Sunday morning, That his mission would then be closed, and he would be carried back to the sky. When we went to my house we carried the table, and the cloths, and the pitchers upon and in which we had been burning the sacrifice. This morning she said he was eating breakfast when he arose from the table and said : “The time has come,” and he told Mollie Barnard lo lay her head upon the table.Mollie said “No, not me,” and Frances Driver thensaid “Iam willing togo,” Wliereupon she placed her head upon the table.Mr.Jordan then took the sword and struck her on the neck, wielding the deadly in- .strument with both hands. He nearly cut her head off the first blow.He struck her three times after this, I think. He then said, “Thy will be done.” He forced Lucy Hurd and me to drag Frances out. Then the police came.God told me to join the society. This is a correct report of Mollie's talk. The implement used to commit this horrible deed was a regular cavalry sword. When arrested he had the sword, reeking with tho unfortunate woman's blood, in his hands. The officers found in his pockets a card about the shape and size of a small photograph, on which, in addition to cabalistic characters, is written the words: “W.W.Jordan, founder of faith and religion.Spirit talks through me.” — __ Eloped with His Neighbor's Cook."Philip Swan has eloped with his neigh- be, bread, biscuits and cakes she made with Tmperial Cream Tartar Baking Powder tuut he fell desperately in love with her.le Lius promised, however, to return to his wife if she will use the same, which she will now do, as it is the only reliable.Brrore Purcrasise your holiday pre- sents call and inspect our stock of meer- : schauun and briar pipes, cigar and cigarette holders, cigar cases and other smokers’ articles suitable for presentation. We carry a larze assortment and oyr prices are very low.T.Harris & Son, 1% Notre Dame strect, ———y — THE MONTREAL PLANTS FOR ROOM DECORATION.{From the Leeds Mercury.) Nothing contributes more to the pleasure of the occupants of a room than a few plants well cultivated. The furniture may be plain or otherwise, pictures artistic, and every arrangement complete and in the best taste, but the pleasure of all is enhanced by the presence of a judicious selection of plants.During winter, of all seasons, especially are plants best appreciated in the sitting room.Happily, the old prejudice that plants in a room inhabited by human beings are unwholesome is exploded.Nothing could be more fallacious.Healthy plants even in a bed-room are ministers to the health of the occupier of the room.At present we shall deal only with a few of the more durable or lasting of foliage plants—that is, such as contribute perhaps little color effect but much grace and beauty to the surroundings.Amongst pals there is a large number of valuable subjects for our purpose.None, perhaps, is more durable than Latania bor- bonica. In a small state it is usually rather an ill-balanced plant, but when about 2 years old and growing in a 6 or 7-inch pot it becomes a remarkable object in any place. It has the merit of being one of the most durable of room plants also, and can be kept healthy in the same not for a longer period than almost any otherthatcan be named. When it becomes pot-bound all it requires is that ample supplies of water should be given it.Seaforthia elegans is another excellent palm for rooms, but less hardy and durable than the foregoing sort.It is, however, much more elegant in form ; and if it is kept in a tolerably warm room and not allowed to stand near the window at night when very cold, it will last a very long time in perfect form and good health. These two by no means exhaust the list of palms fit for our purpose, but they are characteristic of nearly all the types of the family and the best adapted for culture in rooms.Draccena is, perhaps, the most important of decorative plants for rooms. The variety of form and color is great and stfking.Amongst the colored sorts there are none to surpass the two oldest, viz.: D.terminalis and D.cooperi.There are many more striking sorts among the newer introductions, but hardly any that combine the same striking colors and handsome form, with the requisite hardness and durability for rooms.Of green foliaged sorts there are D.rubra, a rather misleading name, as the foliage is green, with a very narrow red or brown margin, and D.australis, a very elegant subject, with long, narrow, grass-like leaves.Ficus elastica (india-rubber tree) is one of the noblest and most characteristic of plants, suitable for rooms. Its leaves of beautiful form, grand proportions and pleasing, lustrous green are always attractive. It is moreover one of the most easily cultivated of room plants, and will thrive under less skillful treatment than almost any other.Begonias furnish a rather rich group of capital room plants in the rex varieties, of whieh it is needless tospecify the sorts by name, as almost any of them may be selected, and will not fail to give satisfaction. The nearer they are placed to the light the better the leaves will color; but they must be kept away from cold draughts, and should be removed from close proximity to the window at night and during cold days.Grevillea robusta (the Australian silk oa*) is one of the most elegant of room plants, and under ordinarily skillful treatment will endure long.It is a very hardy subject, but apt to lose its lower lzaves if the roots are allowed to suffer from dryness, and equally so if they are kept too wet.The leaves are long, and elegantly divided in the manner of ferns.Aspidistra eurida—sometimes, but erroneously, called a palm—is, perhaps,,the most durable of ali plants to select for room decoration. It has not any visible stem, but throws up a mass of noble leaves a foot or 18 inches long, and 3 to 5 inches broad, dark green in one form and variegated white and green in another. An interesting feature in this subject is that its flowers hardly rise above the soil, and have to be looked for at the base of the leaf-stalks.It may be kept in perfect health for a long time in very small pots if well supplied with water, and will endure a dry atmosphere and extremes of heat and cold better than almost anything else.-_—__- Lo.Scott's Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil and Hypophosphites is sold all over the world. It is far superior to plain Cod Liver Oil, palatable and easily digested.Dr.Martin Miles Stanton, Bury Bucks, London, England, says: “I have prescribed Scotts Emulsion, and taken it myself. It is palatable, efficient, and can be tolerated by almost any one, especially where cod liver oil itself cannot be borne.” Put up in 50c and $1 size.ALES AND LIQUORS.JOHN H.R.MOLSON & BROS.Ale and Porter Brewers, 286 St.Mary 8t., Montreal.Have always on hand the various kinds of ALE AND PORTER IN WOOD "AND BOTTLE.Families regul rly supplied.72% Orders received by Telephone.Mr.Wm, Watson, 78 Fortification Lane bottles our Ales and Porter. He is authorized to use our labels, May 2 I walk with God and the Holy s rook.He was so delighted with the —_—— ‘Dow's Brewery, CHABOILLEZ SQUARE.10: and other Ales, Extra Dcuble and Single Stout, in Wood and Bottle.; hounds feather through in the most orthodox fashion, and come bounding out oa the other side, not having had an apo- loey of an excuse for “ owning to him.” This untoward event happens several times. But birds are put up in any quantity.Mr.Leatherlegs is interviewed, and it finally comes out that he did certainly “last noight it was a week may be, killed 'un, and Jim he did say summat aboot knocking a big dog-fox on th’ heead which ’ad spiled a brood which he had took partikler pride on” etc., etc. Finally, when the matter is put to the worthy guardian of one’s forest and game in the shape of a threat, that “ifa ox isn't found as usual, when next hounds come, there is likely to be a vacancy,” added to the half promise of a tip, on the very strict QT.from the Master, things come right again, and the reputation of owner and covert stand as good as ever in the world’s eyes. Now our insular farmers, the French particularly, have a great liking for sport, but it wants cultivating. They are like the budding athlete. He may like boxing very much but it does not follow that he ought to take a lively interest in prize-fighting.While encouraging the desire for seeking after the knowledge of the noble art itself, the vouth should be discouraged from wishing toin any way aid or abet the lowering of it.So with those who now, every winter think nothing of shooting a fox.« (est bom sport, et je recois mes trente cents.” A little trouble and patience, and there will not be a farmer who will kill, or allow one of his men to destroy a fox on his place. The vision of sundry dollars in futuro will act as one cause for his eood conduct, while, a little encouragement from the hunting men, who will explain the delights of the chase, how it is fr greater sport riding to kill, than shooting, will bring the affair to a satisfactory understanding.Again, the kennels want feed, the members of the Hunt want hay and straw, and they have friends who own horses which require feeding.1f the wearers of the blue collar will give the farmers the first chance of supplying them with what they want, and make it a point of let ting them know that it is their desire to help them thus, there willbe a sreat increase in the number of foxes each season all over the country. There will be no call on the poultry fund for the mysterious disappearance of fowls, whilst the monetary reward of $1 per head per fox is holding good.Men who can shove up barbed wire to protect their cattle, can be trusted to look after what few poultry they generally have. When once the French farmer gets it into his head it is not sportsmanlike to shoot a fox, when hounds are in his country, no man will make him do so.If a Frenchman appreciates anything, it 1s , the ap- pelation of being “un vrai sport.’ REVIEW.‘We have received a copy of the Xmas number of the Spirit of the Times, which contains 60 pages of interesting matter, on one of which, .715, isa plan of a running ground.Thisseems to be main- taken from sthe ground at Stamford ridge, London, England, as it resembles in very many ways the home of the L.A.C.men.In fact, with the exception of the press stand and that the men have to run left shoulder inside, instead of the right, there is but little difference. The letter press, giving the details of how to arrange the ground, and the explanatory matter on the varlous competitions that come off on athletic gro nds, is admirably lucid, and is from the pen of Mr§ W.B.Curtis.; The paper, accompanied with plans, of the trotting tracks, by W.B.Tasig, hould be of interest to all people fond of rounds, and trotting associations.Wé g to direct the attention of the newly formed P.Q.T.A.to the same, for a new ground under their auspices would be a the city tracks. The veterinary department is as strong and useful a feature as ever.BASEBALL IN MONTREAL.With a view to finding out whether there is any truth in the report that Montreal is to join the International League, the HERALD sporting man interviewed one of the most enthusiastic admirers of baseball in the city yesterday, a gentleman to whom lovers of the ball game owe much for the hold obtained by the American national game in this city last year.It appears that we want a gentleman among us like Mr.Cox, of Toronto, who is not only a sportsman from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet, but is wealthy enough to be able to give any branch of sport a lift when it wants it, in a pecuniary way, and can afford time also to see to matters personally. There seems to be no one in the city to take hold of the reins of baseball government and drive this exciting pastime to the front, now that the gentleman who last year did so much has, through pressure of business, retired from taking any active part in furthering his pet game.Again, we have no really first-class men in this city who could be relied upon to make any show upon the diamond against a League team, unless it were a show of themselves. There are many good second class men to be found among the ranks of the Gordons, and down in the East End among the St.Lawrence men.It is very probable that many an ex-Philadelphia man is at present earning good money among the hard toilers at the other end of the city ; but as one swallow does not make a summer, two good second rate men will not make a first-class League nine. The late manager of the Hamiltons wrote some time ago, with a view to finding out whether there would be any good playing, in the International League, from Montreal.Nothing definite so far has been done.It is perfectly plain that were a really A 1 outside club, backed by outsiders, to play from here, good attendance would be found on the Shamrock ground this summer to see the game played by good teams. But if baseball is to become popular here, let it be so by aid of unexceptional teams composed of men of undoubted “ball” capabilities. The; American national game has hardly yet obtained a firm hold here, and no chances must be taken by those who wish to see it succeed, of countenancing the presence on our diamond of managers whose ambition is to “make” atthe expense of the game.We want straightforward baseball, played by both sides to win.If amateur baseball again is played we want no individuals to offer “inducements” to others to “come and join our club.” Amateur baseball, as played last year, bad better drop into oblivion, than re-appear only to wind up as it did last season.lt is a matter of general admission among the thousands in this city alone, who take an interest in amateur sport, that there were but two clubs in the Montreal Amateur Baseball League that acted up thoroughly to the spirit of the letters composing the word “amateur.” We have plenty of time in front of us now.If there are any who wish to see Montreal represented by a team in the International League, let them at once commence to work.As for the Amateur League, now is the time for secretaries of clubs to hunt out their proofs against the men who were under a cloud as to their bona fides as amateurs last season, so that by the time the second annual meeting is held their evidence can be laid on the table, or “ever after hold their peace.” OLD COUNTRY FOOTBALL.PRESTON NORTH END VS.QUEEN'S PARK, (GLASGOW.) altogether fully a hundred took.part in the festivities.Among the veterans who tramped, the following conspicuous “old timers” were present: Robt.Ross, president James Monk, vice-presi- dent Mr.Gilmore, Mr.W.L.Matthews, hon.sec., Wm.M.Knowles, treasurer, and Messrs.Bunnett, Robertson, Hen- shaw, Godfrey, Duncan McIntyre, Ross Mackenzie, Shorey, Noel, Bourdon, Jones, E.M.Beuder, Laflamme, Bonnet, Sims, Hy.Ducette, Kirkhouse, Ramsay, Bulling, Boudrey, Summerhayes, McFall, Beckett and King-Hall.Mr.Mackenzie and Mi.Monk picked a couple of teams, tested, in which Mr.Mounk’s side came off the victors.Cotillions and waltzes in the most approved manner, then became the rage, and were performed in hearty, rollicking way, wholly masculine.During the evening Mr.A.P.McQuirk rendered several solo selections from “ Erminie” and other operas, which induced all the moccasined feet in the room to go beyond the control of their owners, and encouraged the vocal talent of the large non-singing but “humming” section of the audience.Mr.Duncan McIntyre gave the “ Boston Train,” to which the “children” present got on board with a vengeance. It was enthusiastically encored, and he then sang that old Southern classic, “ Get along Sinners,” which met with an equal amount of approbation, presumably because every man present felt that insuch a jolly community it was impossible any of the class indicted in the song could be present. At any rate there was no sinning as far as shirking the chorus was concerned. The feature of the evening was Mr.C.McFall’s beautiful “ Waiting,” a tenor song, full of possibility and sentiment, and his encore of “Golden Love,” a very pretty ballad.Mr.Monk came to the fore with another nigger song, “ These Bones Shall Rise Again,” in the chorus of which many “ greenhorns ” unwittingly pronounced their doom, as they were subsequently sent ceiling-ward, among them being the HERALD scribe, who was suddenly torn from a-courting of the muses in a neglected corner, and whirled up to interview the rafters.Messrs.Beuder and Beaudrey sang two duets, “Filez o mon navire” and “Les Rameaux,” which were enthusiastically received and chorused, and Mr.R.Sum- merhayes sang the “Sailor’s Bride ” to his own accompaniment. After a “walk round,” the business portion of the programme was gone through, when it ‘vas announced that Mr.Francheau, secretary of the Buckingham Gun Club, invited a dozen St.George's men to a concert, to take place any date they choose to fix after the 20th instant, under the auspices of the Gun Club; The green steeplechase, which was unavoidably postponed, is fixed for the 24th instant. The course will be from the foot of Peel street, up the gully, and from the foot of the Pines to the Club House by any track the trampers prefer.A good muster is expected. The club tramp to Lachine on Saturday.CONTRACTORS’ ASSOCIATION.Preparations for the Annual Drive and Banquet.A large number of members of the Contractors’ Association met last even- in their hall, on St.James street, to make final preparations for their annual drive and banquet, which take place on the 24th inst.Mr.Louis Allard was chairman.A communication was read from J.Vaillancourt, secretary of the Association of Carpenters and Joiners, asking the contractors to name a committee to meet one from their society to discuss grievances which existed between the bosses and the men.A committee of eleven was named, and instructions given to the Secretary to inform the carpenters that they would be met by the contractors on Monday, the 16th inst., at8 p.m.It was resolved that an invitation be extended to the Montreal Driving Club to take part in the Association’s annual drive, on the 24th inst. The Chairman read a letter from the Secretary of the Board of Trade, requesting him to forward in writing any amendments he could suggest to the Code of Civil Procedure, as the Council of the Board of Trade intend to forward resolutions embodying proposed amendments to the Attorney General.Final preparations were then made for the banquet to be given on the 24th at the St.Lawrence Hall, for which over one hundred invitations have been issued.- eee.POLICE COURT.W.Jarrett, larceny, was yesterday sentenced to three months in the common jail at hard labor. The charge preferred by Mr.Parker against his employees for larceny was continued. The case against Mrs.Samuels was yesterday adjourned until to-day owing to the non-arrival of one Berman from New York, who is required as a witness for the prosecution._— DR.DE JONGH'S LIGHT-BROWN COD LIVER OIL.IN WEAKNESS OF CHILDREN ITS ECFICACY 18 UNEQUALLED, Thomas Hunt, Esq, F.R.C.S., late Medical Officer of Health, St.Gile’s and Bloomsbury, writes: —“In badly nourished infants, Dr.de Jongh's Cod Liver Oil is invaluably. The rapidity with which two or three tea-spoomfuls a day will fatten a young child is astonishing. The weight gained is three times the weight of the Oil swallowed, or more.Children generally like the taste of Dr.de Jongh's Oil, and when it is given them, often cry for more.” So'd only in capsuled Imperial Half-pints, Pints and Quarts, by all druggists.Sole Consignees, Ansar, Harford & Co, 210 High Holborn, and a very exciting tug of war was con- | MECHANICS’ LIENS And Contractors’ Grievances.A Practical Man on An Important Question.“What amendments do you propose suggesting to the Code of Civil Procedure 7” asked a HeEraLDp reporter of Mr.Louis Allard.chairman of the Contractors’ Association.“We have nothing to do with the Code of Civil Procedure,” answered the contractor, “it is the Civil Code we wish to see amended.” “ In what respects ?”’ “In two very important points. We ask for the repeal of Article 1690 of the Code, relating to the payment of extras. That clause is framed in such a way that we cannot obain payment for any extras done to a building in course of erection, or repairs, unless we have first obtained an order in writing from the proprietor authorizing them.Architects often, while the work is in progress, modify their plans, and introduce new features not provided for in the specifications; but unless, as I have said, the proprietor authorize these extras in writing, we cannot compel payment for them, although the building benefits by them.We cannot even compel the proprietor to say under oath whether he authorized them or not, or directed his agent, the architect to have them made.We want to be placed on the same footing as other people ; on the sage footing as contractors in other provinces of the Dominion. We ask for the assimilation of the laws of this province which regulate the building trade with those of the other provinces. The second reform we will suggest will be the introduction of a MECHANICS’ LIEN ACT, similar to the ones in force in Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and most of the States of the Union. As far as the contractor is concerned, he is protected well enough, but not so the man who supplies the materials, or he who gives his labor. We want these men to have a lien on the building and the soil, to the extent of the owners indebtedness to the builder. The owner will then have to see.that the workmen are paid and not act in collusion with the contractor to keep men out of their wages.” “ What objection is there to such act, Mr.Allard ?” “The only objection some people raise is that our present system is based on the Code Napoleon, which they consider sacred. But that is a sacredness for which I have not much respect. Its provisions are not in accord with public gentiment on the American continent, and do not become this part of the century either.” “How does this Mechanics Lien Act work in other parts of the Continent?” continued the reporter.“Very well, indeed. Some American authorities are of opinion that without such a law the building trade would suffer greatly, as would also the whole trade of the country.About a century ago, in 1791, I think, when Washington first began to be built up as a city, the wise heads of that district came together and framed what since developed into such an Act.It had not then been asked for by contractors, but the business men and politicians saw that if they wished to have a prosperous city they must give some means of security to the builders. The same thing was done in Philadelphia some twelve or fifteen years later. The citizens there recognized the necessity of passing such a law, owing to the large number of strangers who were flocking into the city and were anxious to build.By thus securing the builder, the supplier of materials and the laborer, advances were made, contracts entered into and a general feeling of confidence engendered.“Have you hopes that such amendments will be adopted at this next session of the Legislature ?” “Yes, great Lopes; Mr.L.O.David has the bills in hand for us, and I think the Premier will help their passage. But come to Mr.Bauquet on the 24th, and you will hear a full expression of opinion on the subject.” And with this intimation, Mr.Allard, bade the reporter good-evening.—— THE WATER DEPARTMENT.Meeting of the Committee—Expenditure for the Year. The Water Committee held a meeting yesterday afternoon, when some ordinary business was transacted.Alderman Donovan presided, and there were present Aldermen Hamelin, V.Grenier and Martineau.Atthe opening of the meeting Alderman Hamelin said to the Chairman : “ Not much business to-day; small sums of money were also given in special instances with ‘this distribution. The Chairman or some other member has been in daily attendanee at the Home during the year, and your Committee have held thirty meetings, at these, special cases came up for discussion. In many instances applicants simply ask for advice rather than assistance which would not cost the society anything, and in several cases employment has been found through the instrumentality of your Committee. The operations of the society could be considerably extended, and deserving cases more liberally assisted if more generous contributions were placed atthe disposal of your Con = mittee. We earnestly appeal to the cealthy English residents in the city and neighborhood for liberal donations to enable the good work to be carried ” he President, ex-Alderman w.D.Stroud, then read his interesting annual report as follows :— THE ANNUAL REPORT.GENTLEMEN :—In presenting this, my annual report, 53rd of the Society, it affords me exceeding great pleasure fu be ia a position to announce, that our Society is in a good position, which has too often not been the case with a balance on the right side of the count, that is in its favor. Those who know anything about the working of this and similar societies, will fully appreciate the difficulty of doing a large amount of charitable work and at the same time making both ends meet. The Board of St.George’s Society fully realizes what this means, and I trust that the management, in the future, will never be placed in the same cramped position that has many times been the experience of the past.During the year just closed, the Society has supplled board and lodging to sixty-nine families, 627 adults and 202 children (894 persons in all) to our distressed fellow-country people, mainly, newly arrived immigrants, who, under exaggerated expectations, or driven almost at the point of starvation, came out here expecting to find homes, employment and almost every comfort ready and waiting for their acceptance. Many, too, came across not because they lacked employment, for that they never sought, but because they had become too well known in the prisons and the poor house. These last named we do not want, but when they arrive and demand our charity, it is our duty to do the best we can for them in the way of affording temporary relief, and striving to give them the opportunity of becoming honest and hard-working citizens.Having cared for the strangers, we also have, by the liberality of our friends, been in the happy position of being able to supply 305 familles, comprising 1,566 persons, resident in Montreal, with the material for a good Christmas dinner, which, in fact, means sufficient provisions to last them for a few days.To the kind friends who s0 liberally contributed to this most worthy object, the officers of the Society would, while returning their best thanks, remind them of the Divine declaration that it is more blessed to give than to receive, and ask if in the majority, if not all the cases, the truth of that announcement has not been experienced.During the year DEATH HAS MADE ITS INROADS upon a few of the Society’s membership, and we have been called upon to lament their removal from our midst.St.George's Day was not recognised by a dinner or concert, but a service was on the following Sunday held on behalf of the society. The sermon was preached on Sunday, 24th April, by the Rev.G.Osborne Troop, and was a discourse well calculated, not only to stir Englishmen up by way of remembrance, but to impress upon them the duties they owe to their God, their fellow countrymen, the land of their birth, the land of their adoption, and the world at large. The board would desire to return its thanks to the rev.gentlemen for delivering that admirable discourse; to the organist and choir of St.George’s Church for the music performed on that occasion, and to the Very Rev.Dean Carmichael, and the wardens, for having kindly placed that church at the disposal of your society.FAULTY IMMIGRATION SYSTEM.In the preceding remarks brief reference has been made to the class of immigrants whose necessities have caused heavy demands to be made upon your resources.Permit me to add that perhaps very just complaints have been made against the system under which people are deported to this country, some of them through the agency of professed benefactors of the English poor, and others by the circulation of misleading pamphlets in the interest of men who make their living out of the commission they make on ocean passages. In¥one way or other hundreds are annually lurred away, some from homes of comparative comfort only to find themselves burdens upon a community which does not require them and whose difficulties their presence only intensifies.Upon more than one occasion reference to the matter has been made in our annual reports, while representations have more than once been made both to the British and Canadian authorities against the existing system of disposing of the surplus population of the British isles. It is the duty of both the British and the Canadian authorities to seriously consider the subject and devise some means by which only suitable persons shall be sent out to Canada.Prompt and proper action would prevent much misery and disappointment to the immigrants, and, besides, would enable the national societies to devote more attention t» the resident poor with whose necessities they are acquainted.St.George’s Society has, I am glad to say, a conimodious and well administered home for tlic accommodation of such ag may be thrown upon it.But the English people of Montreal and other Canadian cities have no right to be burdened with the off-scouring of the Mother land, whose presence is an unwelcome pledge that “the poorjwe shall always have with us,” and not those alone but criminal and the vicious also.On Sth inst.(Thursday) a concert was Leld in the Queen's Hall for the benefit of its funds, Musically it was a success, financiaily a failawe. It is a pity Eng- Usamien did not attend in the numbers they ought, and then a good margin would have been left. The Society will not have to make up the deficiency.Gentlemen,—As most of youare aware, for almost thirty years I have been an office bearer of St.George's Society.I have acted as Secretary, Chairman of the Charitable Committee, and for the last two years President.Having during this extended period endeavored to do my duty faithfully and well, I feel it incumbent upon me to request you to give me a little leisure. There are, I have no doubt, others who would without hesitation accept the responsible office of president feeling themselves amply rewarded in the consciousness that they were endeavoring to do some good to their fellow men.I desire to retire, not because of a wish to shirk any duties or responsibilities, but I do so knowing that all our machinery is in perfect working order and that there yet lies a great work before the society, whose only requirements for that purpose is more ample means and this there ought to be no difficulty about obtaining. In conclusion, allow me to say I leave the chair entertaining the best of feelinx towards, and the highest respect for, all with whom I have been called upon to co-operate; our relations having been most cordial ; and in a spirit of good fellowship evincing respect and best wishes and anticipations I wish the Society and all its members, individually and collectively, a happy and prosperous New Year.Mr.Mason remarked that they could not let the occasion pass without moving a vote of thanks to their President. He referred in a feeling manner to the work eu.done by Mr.Stroud, and said that his address contained hints which were worth the attention of those high up in England and Canada. He hoped that in the future they would not have those persons sent out Who were no good to the country. They wanted people, but they wanted the right sort.He concluded b moving a vote of thanks to Mr.Stroud, which was adopted unanimously amidst applause.Mr.Stroud in replying said that what he had done was for the poor, and that he had only done his duty as a man and as every man should do.There was a point which he would mention, and that Was that the English poor were degerv- ing.The election of officers then preceeded and resulted as follows: President, Mr.S.H.Redfern.1st vice-president, Mr.A.H.Mason.2nd vice-president, Mr.C.P.Sclater.Treasurer, Mr.W.S.Walker, (re-elect- ed unanimously.)
