its weekly review of crop correspondence the Cincinnati Price Current says: “The past week has been one of continuous mildness of temperature in this latitude, attended with considerable fall of rain, and in some dis tricts in the West the precipitation was excessive, inclucing portions of Ii- linois.Missouri ana Kansas.‘The conditions have been unfavorable ior ihe movement of produce from the farms, and consequentiy shipments of grain have been restricted, and are likely to continue so until abetter condiiion of the roads prevails. The moisture and mild temperature have favored the growing wheat, and whatever change has oc- surred in the status of the plant has been favorable, so that it is rcasonable to say that the general average position of the crop has been somewhat improved.“There appears to be littie or na increase in inclination of holders ot grain to sell at present low vaiucs, but the aggregate movement scems to meet all CUTENnt requirements in a general way For corn the demand upon the central market is less than in yuars of smaller general supplies. For wheat the cails Ol millers in the winter grain regions ‘continue unsatisfied by local oiferings tnroughtout a large portion of the area.Ln: wheat markels huve been unsettled Ly the disturbing conditions which have recently arisen in political atiairs, and 4 new record for tae crop show decreases all round.Wheat, compared with 1894, has decreased 17,405,585 bushels and 3,258,616 bushels compared with the year before. This to some extent was due to the fact that in the earlier part of the sca- son there was scarcely enough Manitoba wheat to fill home requirements, while the movement from Chicago via St.Lawrence ports was greatly restricted by low water.Corn shows an even greater Jecrease than wheut, especially ‘when eompared with the shipments of 1893, when nears ly 18,000,000 bushels were sent out.In other grains cats have shown tho most change, having fallen from 3,119,- 240 bushels in 1893 and 77,569 bushels in 1894 to’ 10,750 bushels this year.Peas have also shown steady decreases in the years mentioned. The following comparative statement of Mahon at the morgue esterday afternoon.Whe first witness called was Dr.ville neuve, who had mAde an examination of the body of the deceasod. The external examination revealed nothing except that the body had been in ths water, The only marks of violence were a scratch on the top of the head and on the nos, and a small cuti on the upper lip about § of an incH in length, and a few scratches on the right elbow and on both knces. The autopsy revealed the fact that under the scratches and the cut on the upper.lip there Was a Certain amount of coagulated blood showing violence inflicted before death.Under the skull was found two cechymosis, one on top of tha head, and} ona on the back of the head.Under the latter was a frac ture of the skull extending the whole base of the full. The brain was covered with a Liood ‘clot, and was congested. The lungs ware also congested and full of blood, water and ecome, which showed that the man had {ried to breathe under water, and death was due to drowning. Before death, he recéived violence, the nature of which is not.exactly known.LL.Louis Garcon, a carter living at 197 Ropery Street, deposed to having seen Madore driving his cab down Inspector Stpeet at 1.15 on Monday morning.‘There were three men in the cab making 2 foise, and they appeared to be drunk.John Thompson Porter, motorman, 208 Shaw Street, said he saw the deceased twice on the might of the occurrence. The first time was at about a few minutes after twelve, and again shortly after one o'clock. He was with his cab near Colborne Street, and on both occasions had his hat off. There was no person in the cab.Thomas Murphy, laborer, 18 Oliver Etreet, said shortly after one o'clocx on Monday morning he was standing with a friend on McCord Street, and heard the cries of a man coming from the canal. He heard Constable McKeown blow his whistle, and they all went down to the anal. There was a hole in the ice a short distance from, the sheds. The ice looked very shaky, and there was a signal up marked danger.: Patrick Clark, 26 McCord Street, corroborated the last witness.Constable McKeown said a carter on Victoria Square had been notified to attend, and the coroner intimated that a warrant would be taken out to enforce his attendance .The coroner said ‘that if the officer could get any more witnesses this morning he would examine them at the next inquiry, which will take place on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock.AS BAD AS BEFORE.The Repairs to the Recorder’s Court THE BOND ISSUE.House of Representatives to Vote To- morrow—Arrangements expense of many hundred dollars! The ceilings were roplastered and delicately tinted, and in fact no money wad spared to embellish them in a proper manner. The officials were at last congratulating themselves that they were in offices fit to live in, and while working in which they ran no risk of having their skullsj crushed by falling plaster.Their short-lived dream has come to an end for the ceiling, if not as bad as it was before, is rapidly becoming so.Already water from some leaky valve or another has penetrated thd ceiling, cracking it so badly that portions may fall at any time. The officials of the Recorder's Court want to know who is to blame for this and so do the public. The Difference, Some people have been known to smoke cane, and they say the change from cane to ordinary ‘tobaccos was not so noticeable as the change from ordinary tobaccos to Ross’ Cut Plug Smoking Tobacco.See Ross’ Asbestos pipes at 20c, Chaboillez Square.PATENT REPORT.Mr.Hanbury A.Budden, solicitor of patents, 517 New York Life building, Mgut- real, reports the following patents to have been issued to Canadian inventors by the United States Patent Office on December 24, 1895: 552,069-—Watch-casc (spring, Bruca Murphy, Orillia, assignor to E.F.Bowman, Lancaster, Pa; 11,519—(re-issuc)—A rti- ficial fuel, Jcan D.Oligny, Montreal, as signor to D.O.Frye, Lachine Lccks, anl 1.G.Harris, Toronto; 551,836—Trip-sling, James W.Provan, Oshawa; 551,827—Ma- chine for bending pipes, William! and the earlier wife separated from him.The children of the first marriage were recognized by him as legitimate and sent to England to be educated.Mr.Maxwell, the Governor of Cape Coast, Is doing his utmost to assure the comfort of th2 men of the Ashanti expeditionary force who have arrived in the African Steamship Company's steamer Angola, and to make the transport service a success. Her Majesty’s gunboats Magple and Sparrow are at Cape Coast. The Bathurst, with the second portion of the expeditionary force and Sir Francis Scott on board arrived at Cape Coast cn December 14.Dr.Warth, head of the Geological Society, while gold prospecting in Chota, Nagpore, and Bengal, struck a reef of remarkable richness.'The Indian Gov- ermnent ‘has ordered the erection of stamps for trial crushings.FORFIGN.At Cologne, on December 16, a train of eight tip waggcens, in charge of 16 men, fell through the temporary bridge over the Rueppan Canal into the water.Four of the men were drowned.A Tootbail match, under Rugby rules, was played at Paris, December 16, at Levallois Perret, between the Racing Clu of Parls, and an Oxford University fifteen. The result was a victory for the French team by one try (three points) to nil.The game was played under very discouraging circumstances, According to a despatch from Rio Janeiro to the Herald, a message has been received there from’ Paris to the effect that France intends to make a naval demonstration in Brazilian waters unless her claims to the disputed territory of Amapa be speedily settled. It is not generally known that Great Britain has already undertaken six wars against Ashanti, but such is the case, the first being at the commencement of the present century.'This should be sufficient to show that further expeditions will be necessary if, with the present one, our Government do not annex the territory. In the year 1838 Captain Maclean, who was Governor of the Gold Coast, was killed by the Ashantis, and it was reported that his skull was for, many years used as a Fetish drinking cup at all court festivities at Coomassie.'The tirst time the Achantis are supposed to have heard of Europeans was ir the early part of the seventeenth century, in which century also Coomassie was founded as the capital of the Ashanti country by Osai Tutu.PRETTY PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND William Welsh, MP.for Queen’s, P.E.I.Indorses Dr.Agnew’s Catarrhal Powder. One of tho genuincly pretty sections of the Domirion is Prince Edward Island.Thoso who have not had an opportunity of visitirg there hepe that some day it may be counted in their vacation.Queon’s Cour- ty is represented in tho House of Commcns by Mr.Wm.Welth, ore cf the many others who have used Dr.Agnew’s Catarrhal Powder, and from away off in this pretty section of the Dominion he very cheerfully proclzimy to all concernul that he has used Dr.Agnew’s (Catarrhal Powder, and knows whereof ho speaks, when he praises it as a remedy for catarrh or cold in the head.Ten minutes is all the time required for it to give relicf. It quickly cures.Sampl: bottle and Blower sent by S.G.Detchon; you leave it,” says Sam.And then Sam appears on a day when you are in tho thick of somo particularly absorbing household task and ho says: “I've como up early to mend that paper, and if yur’ll just make some pasts for mo, please, I'M go at it.” You sigh, but do it cheorfully, thinking, if it is early in your married life, that that will be all.- Prescntly, however, there is a demand for rags, stepladder, pail and whisk broom.Tlese also you get out and return to your work.“Tun,” calls Sam, ‘“where have you hidden my brash? It was in the tcolbox right in the left hand corner, and it is gone.Somo ouo must have taken it.” Again you leave your task and go up stairs or down stairs tothe place whenco cometh the plaint and behold the brush a Lttle to the northeast perchance, but quite in the visible neighberhcod of that little left hund corner.Without even a blush of shane he takes it, and you return to your own work.Ycu have baro- ly begun again, when Sam appears at the door: ‘‘Whero cau I find a box the right size to wet on the stairs, so that I can put some boards across on which to stand the stepladder?’”’ You think a minute, and you know that the only box available is one filled with odds and ends of needful kitchen things, but you resignedly lay thom all out on the floor and give Sam the box, catching at the same moment a look which reveals that he is about to ask you for the boards.‘There are only two long boards on the promises, and those form a walk in the backyard.Still they can bo taken up, and they are—but it entails vigorous brushing and cleansing. Then for a time Sam vanishes, and all | is serene, but not for long. There are a clatter of boards and notes of masculine trouble, which you ignore, until, find - ing that it is not a day for taking hints, Sam calls again, ‘‘Fan, will you pleass come and steady this thing, or D'Il break my neck.” Of course you go, and of course yon find that ho has not already broken it.You get odds and onds of things together to even up and strengthen his rickety scaffolding, and then you sit on a step with your head up between the boards to steady the ladder, except when you vary it by handing a pasty rag, or a hrush, or a match for his pipe. Then is the time you say, ‘‘To man and helper, three hours,”’ and got your revenge, for Sam really sees the point. Now, it is a strange thing that it is always ‘‘man and belper.”’ £i : woman undertakes anything, as a rule she goes ahead and gets Mer things together and does it all by herself, but if a man starts any task pot in the line of his ordinary business he will manage to draw to himself the afistance of every woman within call.If it is driving nails, somp one must band the nails tohim; a woman would keep them in her pocket or mouth. If he is riveting something, the woman must hold the other hammer on the under side and get in her arm the jar of the stroke. If he even mends his fishrod or ties his flies, she must hold the waxed thread or turn the rod with both hands.I do not see how any married woman can doubt the truth of the Scriptures. Why, to her, the fifteenth and eighteenth verses of the second chapter of Genesis set the seal of truthfulness upon the whole. When man was made and put in the garden of Eden to tend it, he hadn’t been there a day before woman had to be made to help him.He couldn’t get along alone at all.Fancy him starting out to sow his radish seed and having nobody to ask how far she thought he ought to put the rows apart, so he could put them some other distance. It must have been awful! Poor Eve! For of all conditions of ‘helper’ that of the gardener’s helper is the worst. It is easy to imagine her— hor day’s work over, as she supposes— planning for a quiet rest upon a cool green bank through the long summer twilight.Along comes Adam, belated in his work, because he had been casting his line from shady nooks into deep, mosey pools, where the speckled trout are lying, and he says to Eve: ‘‘My dear, won’t you come along with me into the garden?I haven’t seen anything of my darling all day.You can sit on a nice soft stone in the path while I work.” And poor, easily beguiled by love Eve gets up and follows right along, but, alas, the stone has not changed its nature any more than Adam has.It is not soft, and perhaps that is the reason why Adam does not keep her sitting there long.Good, kind Adam! He wants the rake, and it is down at the house, or maybe it was a bower, and she may as well bring along a measuring line, of which also she may hold one end when she gets back. And then as Adam gets absorbed he absorbs more and more of Eve.She rakes up the woeds which he has hoed out.She holds up the vines which he ties to the trellis. She trots back and forth for the primitive implements, and she smiles, ‘as if she eujoyed it, but it is a weary woman who, as dusk yields to darkness, accompanies Adam to the house, lugging numerous odds and ends.It is her compensation, as she greets Abel and his wife, who are waiting for her, to hear Adam telling his son, ‘‘l’ve done a lot in the garden tonight, I think I'll Iny off in the middle of the day tomorrow and take a try fur those trout in Cain’s meadow brook.*’ —New York Times. At Hammerfest, in Norway, the polar night lasts from Nov.18 to Jan, 28.Stepniair on Russia’s Czar.In an interview with Stepniak, a report of which appears in Great Thoughts, he was asked his opinicn of the new czar.‘‘Thers was a timo,’’ he replied, “when Russian Liberals cherished a hope—I may say, indeed, a considerable degree of hope—but the new czar has disappointed every expectation of the most moderate among our progressive parties.Ho has shown himself utterly incapable of departing from the traditions of his predecessor, and will continue to play the ungrateful part of official screen to bureaucratic tyranny.’ —Westminster Gazette, ) FOR Liver foot HF AE CONSTIPATION.SALE BY 5, E.MCGALE, 2123 NOTRE DAME STAEET.Fysm br 1c1e—-M ext to l'almoral Hotol. In tie | LEADER- LEAD since | i Es E.B.EpDYs MATCHES SHIP Means Superioi- ty, A À AsX for the .ed—stout soled, footwear.‘with the famous Geodyear welt, from tan Harvard ‘calf, or black Aluminum calf, with Polge felt innerzole—springy, light and stylish.Shoes ~for marsh and mire—mountain sud moor, rain or shine—wet and cold-~wearand tear.Buy thenew wot-proof-snow-proof—cil - dress.Made $5.00 A full Yine of there Popular Slices in Black and Tan at SLATER BROS’, 249 St, James Street.Fans.OVER 600 PATTERNS TO SELECT FROM.All new styles.Every variety.— 50 appreciated by Ladies for NEW YEAR'S GIFTS.J.Palmer & Son, 1745 Notre Dame Street. It Contains the New Ingredient.PRINCIPALLY OF RHEUMATISH.800 STARTLING CURES iN TWO CITIES.Imparts Appetite and Refreshing Sleep.NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE WAS ANV THING KNOWN LIKE IT.800 4 it lakes the Weak Strong, & HAMILTON.OTTAWA.” unknown.S.S.RYCKMA ; The greatest medical record ever attained now à stands to the credit of KOOTENAY—a few months ago There are to-day 850 people in the Cities of Ottawa & b and Hamilton it has cured and they are telling EIGHT THOUSAND Ÿ more how they suffered with Rheumatism, Kidney Complaint and Skin P' Disease, and how KOOTENAY cured when other medicines failed, and physi- clans gave them up.Pamphlet of sworn affidavits free by addressing .MEDICINE CO., Hamilton, Ont.ER, LAINE à C0.Specialty of Stoves, Ploughs, Tea Kettles and Camp Ovens.Commer cial Streot, LEVIS.P.Q.Near Ry.Station.0il Color Boxes._.Water Color Boxes, China Color Boxes .A.RAMSAY & SON, MONTREAL.Importers and Manufacturers of Artists’ Materials, Newlear Advertise in the erald.t } i Nothing ! i .RHEUMATISM.Positive iy Cured by WRIGHT'S RHEUMATIC REMEDY We guarantee the remedy to afford relief in one week or Money wil! ve Refunded, Onc month's treatment for $1.00, All Drug gisis.P.IS CORMACK & CO, Agents, Cor.Notre Dame and McGill St, There is Nothin;x Fquat in appcarance, taste and remedial properties to the fainous SKE!
