Bandeen Hall By Gordon Lambie Special to The Record e Louise Thibault Trio, made up of vocalist Louise Thibault, seven-string guitarist Jon Gearey, and Juno Award-winning saxophonist and composer Joel Miller, is gathering together for a show tonight, October 4, at Bishop's University’s Bandeen Hall as a part of the school’s Musique Chez Nous series.“For us it’s kind of a reunion concert, in a way,” said Gearey.“We spent three months in Tokyo playing together back in 1995, at the beginning of all our careers.” Gearey explained that he and his wife, Thibault, who have been performing together for more than 20 years, were of fered the opportunity to play at a five-star hotel in Tokyo after Louise Thibault agents from the business approached them at a show they were playing with their band, Avalon Motel, at a vegetarian restaurant in Montreal.“Now 1 always tell my stu ‘dents, don’t take anything lightly,” Gearey said, pointing out that one cam never tell when a life-changing opportu nity might arise from what seems like an “ordinary gig.” Within three months, he and Thibault were in Tokyo playing four sets a night, six nights a week, alongside Miller.“At the time Louise was just developing her repertoire and Joel was just in the process of writing and finishing the music for his first album.” Gearey reflected, pointing out how much the experience of playing together shaped each musician’s career.“It was when I was there I realized the potential of seven-string guitars.” Since that time, Geary and Thibault have continued to per form in Montreal, areas East ern Canada, Alaska, and South Korea at festivals, dubs and concerts, recording several CDs for commercial distribution In the According to Geary, the trio will be performing a mix of Brazilian music, jazz standards arranged intimately for a small group, Joni Mitchell tunes, and perhaps a song from John Mayer.“It will be very accessible,” he continued.“(Thibault) may not be doing pyrotechnics all over the stage, but she knows how to get to the heart of a song.” The show starts at 8 p.m., with tickets available at $15 for adults or $10 for seniors. As with the vast majority of Musique Chez Nous concerts, the show is free for students.More information about the Musique Chez Nous concert se- the Richmond County Historical Society work to keep the English language rich and colourful By Nick Fonda Record Correspondent RICHMOND athleen Lynch admits she Ke: only recently become ctive with the Richmond County Historical Society.“I should have become involved a long time ago,” she says.“I feel I have an old soul.” As is the case for many, her interest in local history is an outgrowth of tracing her own family genealogy which is Irish on her father’s side and English on her mother’s.“My great- great grandfather was Andrew Brown,” she says, “and he settled here in the mid-1800s.” Now retired after a career as a nursing assistant at the Wales Home, Kathleen wants to keep a promise made to Dorothy Howard, a daughter-in-law of Senator Howard whose legacy to the city of Sherbrooke is Howard Park.Dorothy Howard spent her final years at the Wales Home, just outside of Richmond.“She was a wonderful woman,” Kathleen recalls, “and a true lady from tip to toe.One of her interests was language, and in particular the aphorisms or sayings that make the English language so rich and colourful. We often talked and she told me several times that I should write down these old expressions so they wouldn’t be lost.” “A lot of them,” Kathleen continues, “you still hear, for example, ‘Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water,” but there are others that have largely disappeared from our daily conversation.” Despite the fact that over the last three generations we’ve become a consumer society that produces garbage at a frightening rate, we still occasionally hear the axiom, Waste not; want not.“My grandmother,” Kathleen says, “had another version that sounded more ominous: Wilful waste makes woeful want.” The expression “All that glitters is not gold” is still heard. The same sentiment was expressed far more colourfully in the farmhouse in which Kathleen grew up.“I think I was maybe four or five years old when I heard my grandfather say, ‘It shines like manure on a barn door on a frosty morning,” and I remember the expression struck me so much that I ran outside—with- out my boots or coat on, and my mother yelling after me—to go look at the barn door.I came back in as excited as I had ever been because, sure enough, it was a cold, frosty morning and the ice crystals on the manure were sparkling like diamonds.I ran inside and exclaimed to my mom, ‘It does! The shutdown in Washington is near total, with almost everyone on the payroll technically out of work.So the Environmental Protection Agency expert on toxics in water was speaking to us from his home in Colorado via Skype as an american citizen, not an EPA employee.Same content, same man, just extra careful language. After all we are all watched closely by some eavesdropping agency or another. The Canadian expert (from the Auditor General's environmental audit office at that) had to be careful too, but for different reasons.Speaking publicly on the environment is a no-no for government officials.Of course the Auditor General's (AG) voice is a little tougher to shut out all together, but we have witnessed the wrath of the PMO’s office when it comes to outspoken protectors of Canadian citizens. The next report from the AG on the environment is due out the first week of November. After a quick glance at some requests that had been posted to be examined, and with a dismal record to show by the Conservatives, in all likelihood another round of blames for inaction from Ot [= attending a one day seminar on tawa is on the way.Consider this: in the USA you have a bunch of ‘Tea Baggers’ as Bill Maher likes to call them, that make Republican House leader John Boehner look like a choir boy. These Tea Party members have painted the ‘middle of the road’ Republicans in to a corner and have forced President Obama in a “not this time” approach! “Enough is enough,” the President said.“Either you respect the new health legislation we agreed to {Obama Care as it is called), or you face the American people with your extreme stance” (killing Obama care is the objective).Mr.Harper has it more easy.In Washington for the annual United Nations general assembly he advised the media he was not going to take questions! The one who dared, a CTV cameraman was promptly advised he would not be on the plane leaving for an economic mission in South East Asia this week. The PMO’s office rescinded when faced with a possible total media boycott. So much for transparency! Two different universes but the same contempt for the people by the political class. As a result all House and Senate elected officials are getting hell from the general public, with an extra dose of rectoric for the Republicans and their Tea Bag wing, who may well pay dearly for this coup.On the northern side of the border only the Conservatives are to blame. It remains to be seen if the electoral base that backed Harper will be there come election time in 2015.The usual ‘blame the opposition for our misdeeds’ language can endure only so much. When the International Panel on Climate Change put out it’s report last week all Mr.Harper could find to say was that Canada is at the forefront of the environmental battle and that the opposition can find nothing serious to propose! Talk about spittin’ in the wind.We have a total communication breakdown on this continent, only dif ference is that the mess in the US should be cleared within a matter of days, whereas we may have to wait for 2015 or beyond for clearer airwaves from Ottawa.ti TRE RECORD 1195 Galt East, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1G 1Y7 Fax: 819-821-3179 EMAIL: newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com WEasITE: I lived, breathed and ate country music! Then I met my husband, Murray Luce, and moved back to the Eastern Townships.” Hamel would still drive up to Montreal to play occasionally with Black Canyon and another band called Wyoming. She then started to look for local musicians to be able to perform closer to home. She eventually met the musicians she is currently playing with and they are called Night Train.“I love each one of them and applaud their talent. The band is comprised of Phil, Peter,‘Sam, Ivan, and Wendell. It’s such a family affair - country music!” she explains.“The guys I play with now are amazing and the fun we have outweighs any hard work involved. What we do on stage is due to a lot of hours of practice. But I wouldn't have it any other way!” Hamel feels much honoured to receive this award and will humbly accept it! the only teams in the conference to average over 300 - and are the league's top two rated offences.“Every week is a tough game,” said Gaiters coach Kevin Mackey.“McGill is a much improved football team. They're S ee 7 02 ans tas f QOS physical up front in the defensive line and physical in the secondary.Offensively they're moving the ball, they're dynamic and well-coached.” Once again the quarterbacks will be highlighted, with Jordan Heather, who last week became the Gaiters’ all-time leader in passing yards, facing off against Pierre-Luc Dussault, who threw for over 500 yards in last week’s win over Concordia. While the Gaiters suffered a tough loss to Laval last week, the team appears to be ready to put the game in the past.“I know a lot of the guys have the view that ‘I just wish the game was 10 seconds longer,” said veteran centre Tyler Harding.“We’ll take everything that we couldn’t get out of that game with a win and just apply it to the rest of the season.” With many of the Gaiters in their senior seasons, the quest for a home playoff game is perhaps taking on more importance this year than in the past.“I think that all the guys are in that mindset that we want to go all the way so that there can be nothing left on the field at the end of the season.” McGill is a much improved football team. They're physical up front in the - that are out there. It is super cheap and can be bought at any Bulk Barn or a lot of super markets etc, and can be used in anything that calls for ground beef, from hamburger helper, to tacos and spaghetti sauce.Variation Ingredients -1 can lentils - 2 small cans of corn - 1 can of chick peas - 1 pack of tofu - 1 handful of mushrooms - 2 roasted garlic cloves - 1 tomato - 1 green pepper - 1 handful of chopped onion Side note: The best thing about my chili is the experimentation from pot to pot. From dif ferent veggies, to different meat and protein alternatives, to different canned legumes and whatnot, it’s incredibly fun to try new and different things.carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, parsley, spinach, lemon juice, ketchup and BBQ sauce, vegan mayo, different spices and sauces, potatoes, sweet potatoes, whatever.just play around and see what different things will do with the base and for the end result. The tools - 1 big pot - 1 knife - 1 cutting board -1 spoon or ladle The prep 1.First open all the cans.2.Chop all of your ingredients.3.Soak the TVP in hot water for two minutes, or pour water on it in a mug and put it in the microwave for one minute. The dump and stir 1.Put the pot on an element and turn it to medium.2.Add in the TVP.3.Add in can of tomato soup, 1 can of water, the chili seasoning, the cayenne pepper, and 2 cans of crushed or diced tomatoes on top of the TVP.4.Add in some variation items from list above (i.e.corn, green pepper, onion).5.Start stirring your little heart out until thoroughly mixed.6.Dump all your veggies in and keep until thoroughly mixed.7.Dump all cans of beans and extra leftover ingredients in.8.Keep stirring until all evenly mixed.9.Turn element to low and let the chili cook for 30 minutes. The personal tastes like shredded cheese for chili and other such hot dishes. It’s brilliant.Go buy some.Seriously.Notes on the aftermath On the stove — There is a shelf life of a few days In the refrigerator — A shelf life of a couple weeks I always freeze in plastic Tupperware containers which I have stored for months on end before thawing for a last- minute bowl.Just so you're not on July 31, 1930 in Worms, Germany, the daughter of Johannes Scherer and Elisabeth Pfeuffer.Inge grew up during a terrible period in Germany's history.Despite the devastation of the war, Inge met the love of her life, Erhard von Glasow and they married on March 29, 1952.Shortly thereafter they immigrated to Canada, first living in Montreal and then settling in the Sutton area.In addition to raising their two children, Inge was always involved in various community initiatives. She wrote many letters voicing concern about issues she cared about and she was an active proponent of world peace.Inge will be fondly remembered by her son Christian and wife Jovette and - daughter Claudia and husband Elliott and grand children François, Gabrielle, Louisa, Caroline and Christoph.Inge is survived by her sister Anne Marie and her companion of thirteen years, Karl Pietsch. There will be an informal gathering of family and friends at the Cambridge Residence, in “La Salle de her late first husband, John Watt Smith, and adored by her devoted and recently departed husband, Charles my Herrick Sr.She will be sadly mourned by her daughter, Sheila Smith of Knowlton, and her grandchildren, Sean and Tracy Lavin of Vancouver, BC.She experienced real joy in spending her 99th birthday with six-month-old great-grandson, Finn, of Vancouver and this past summer thoroughly enjoyed her time with Tracy and Sean. She will be remembered by family and friends for her strength, her integrity, her love of ideas and learning, and - most of all — for her appreciation of the eccentric side of life.Throughout her long and adventurous life, she was an inspiration to the many people whose lives she touched.Marion was born in Winnipeg, MB on August 13, 1914, where she grew up with parents Winnifred Donaldson and Andrew Donald Paul until she moved to Toronto to be trained by a Russian ballet master. Her talent as a ballet dancer was recognized early on and she spent many years with a New York ballet company, until a car accident ended her professional career. But that didn’t stop her: she opened a small ballet school in the early 50’s and had a real gift in choreographing her young students. She was accepted into the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance in 1956.Well into her 80’s she was teaching ballet, yoga and tai chi.She led an amazing life and used her creative talents to give back to the community.Special thanks to Marion's devoted and compassionate private caregivers, Christina Faludi, Barbara Burbank, Priscilla Hadlock and more recently, Rachel Massicks. And a special mention to the staff at the Manoir who were there for her over the last few years.A memorial to celebrate her life will take place at Manoir Lac Brome, 28 Mont Echo, Knowlton, QC on Tuesday, October 8 at 3:00 p.m.CREMATORIUM DESOURDY IN 1500, rue St-Paul N, Farnham, QC J2N 2W8 8 Funeral Director: Jean Pierre DEC Passed away peacefully at Wales Home, Richmond on husband, but I don’t like him anymore. He is disrespectful to me because 1 am overweight, and he has been after me for years to lose the extra pounds. He uses filthy language when he speaks to me and says it’s OK because I am disrespecting him by not losing weight.I’m 58 years old, have back problems, wear a size 8 and could stand to lose a good 15 pounds.[ am an emotional eater.I lose the weight and then gain it back. But he acts as if I am 50 pounds overweight.Meanwhile, he is tall, thin, has a small beer belly and takes medication for his high cholesterol. My choles- * terol is fine.FPve asked him to go with me for counseling, but he won't.I went alone years ago, but don’t see anything changing if he won’t go.This is so childish. He is so hateful of anyone who is overweight.I can’t take it anymore.I'm getting more depressed and have been seriously thinking of divorce.I want to leave and never come back.Any suggestions?— Any Name in Axy City Dear Any Name: Your husband has become a bully and a verbal abuser. If he has an ounce of sense, he would know that this is not an effective way to get you (or anyone) to change your behavior. It’s simply a way for him to vent, and you are the target of his frus- Annie’s Mailbox trations.Tell your husband you are ready to walk and that counseling may be the last chance the two of you have to work things out.If he still refuses, talk to a counselor on your own and figure out what you want from your marriage and whether it’s too late to save it.Dear Annie: | have been dear friends with “Nancy” for 10 years.I am worried about her mental health.Nancy has had many issues with depression. But in the past three months, her mother died unexpectedly, and then her mother’s house burned down. Her brother and stepfather were still living there. They are now living in Nancy’s tiny apartment. Her brother is a drug addict with a history of violent behavior. All of this is taking a toll on her, and I can easily see her slipping back into depression. Can you tell me of any free or low-cost places where she can go?She has no insurance and barely makes ends meet.— Concerned Friend in Kentucky Dear Friend: We've printed this list before, but it bears repeating: Free and low-cost help is available through local churches, graduate school counseling departments, medical school psychology departments, United Way, the YMCA, YWCA, the Samaritan Institute (samaritaninstitute.org), NAMI (nami.org), and through support groups such as the Depression and Bipolar Alliance (dbsalliance.org) and the Abraham Low Self-Help Systems (lowselfhelpsystems.org).Dear Annie: As a breast cancer advocate, as well as being a stage IV breast cancer patient, I am concerned about the letter from “Torn Sister,” who says her older sister, “Johanna,” is using a breast cancer diagnosis to manipulate her family into buying her things.Receiving a diagnosis of a serious breast cancer, such as inflammatory breast cancer, is quite naturally upsetting. But expecting large sums of money from family members is unreasonable and something I've never heard of a cancer patient doing.Frankly, I wonder whether “Johanna” actually has cancer.I would not take her word for it.“Torn” could offer to go with her to an appointment with her oncologist or to a chemotherapy treatment. Most of us with a serious cancer diagnosis hope for love from our families, but not money.— Florida Dear Florida: Thank you for writing and for giving us
