but, not turning glance either to one side or the other, they were soon borne past by their speed, which “visibly increased as they advanced.Every plume streaming back, every head bent slightly forward, every right arm aloft, every horse at grand racing stole, swift as a meteor, the pugeant of real Yinttle, flew onwards. When they had cleared more than half the distance which had separated them from the huge columns of the Russian cavalry forming the nearest portiou of the enemy before them, and when, of the mile and a halt, much less than three-quarters of a mila intervened, a blaze of light burst along the front, faint bluish wreaths of smoke rose into the air behind the intervals in the.Russian squadrons, obscuring the view of the Russian infantry masses, and at the same moment the first line of the careering brigade, so regular before, appeared like a line no longer, but all ravaged with gaps : men were seen lying ou the ground while their horses wheeled and fled back ; others, on the contrary, extricating themselves from the chargers which had fallen ; a momem wore and the thunders of the autiilery which had made this devastation were borne to the oars of the excited Camp. But still the charge was not checked, and on rode ilie survivors straight upon those wurderons Russian guns, into the very eyes of a storm of musketry from the army of foes behind them, and amid another but now double cannonade on both sides of their advunce—from the position batieries of the hills.Diflerent, indeed, was this manner of executing u oharge ; diflerent, indeed, was this style ol cavalry fighting, Irom that of the filteen hundred Russian horse who on that very morning had declined to meet the narrow front of a single regiment of Highlanders in a single line, unsupported, and ouly two deep ! How truly starting the contrast—how unspeakable the difference! A whole army, in battle array, 80,000 strong, all arms being recipro- caily supported with the most perlect effect— au unassailable position—redoubts, batieries, skirmishers, and, finally, twelve times their own number of cavalry alone, could neither deter the British Light Brigade from attempting nor hinder them from carrying, a charge which swept through or swept down the whole of these delences, and fell like a spent thunderbolt on the further side, shaking the enemy’s united and entire force to such a degree that, The final results of the surprise of Balaclava, and of the various combats which it comprises under one name, were these :—First, that the Russians had stripped all the four redoubts of their defences : secondly, that they captured and removed seven large guns; thirdly, that they had seized and that they maintained the fourth or furthest redoubt, in some measure unlocking the possession of the others ; fourthly, that they, consequently, necessitated, or induced our relinquishment of the other three, and 1l:e contraction of the beleaguering position (which measure, on our part however, though humiliating, was beneficial to us rather than disastrous) ; fifthly, that they had destroyed our matchless Light Cavalry. On the other side, the advantages of the Allies were—first, that in numerical loss they had inflicted far more than they had suffered ; secondly, that, in moral eflect, all the profit of the encounter rested with them, whether the defence of Sir Colin Campbell’s infantry, or the attack of General Scar- lett’s, Lord Cardigan’s and General Bosquet’s cavalry beregarded ; thirdly, that our position was now both improved in compactness, and more clearly understood, in oue at least of its assailable points, by its own defenders. As to the fact which then first startled Europe, that if Sebastopol was besieged, so werc ils besiegers, that fact was not due 10 the battle; what ensued from the battle was not the fact, but only the distinct knowledge of the fact.In dismissing this event, we may yield a well-earned tribute of admiration to the manner in which the Russian operation was planned, and, indeed conducted. The honour of the strategy belongs to the assailants ; but the honour of the fighting and (excepting the one charge) of the field tactics, as coniradistin- gushed from strategy, entirely and unquestionably to the defenders. The next day 4000 of the garrison—who during the night had manifested their joy at the capture of our guus, by ringing of bells, continual shoutings, and a deatening but innocuous cannonade—attacked ihe right nf the British siege position at Inkerman, but were by Sir De Lacy Evans and his division, repulsed witha loss of five hundred killed or wounded, and a hundred prisoners. Our loss in killed was under ten with about seventy wounded.\\Ve mention this little affair of the 26th of October, because it was in reality a High Wines for Sale.—R.Mitchell & Co.Quebec Bank.—C.Gethings.Pine Dgls and Board for Sale.—J.H, Clint.Housg and Building Lots for Sale.—R.Mitchell.OCEAN BTEAMER MOVEMENTS, - FROM EUROPE.Namos.Date, Leaves s* For City of Balt., Hermann .N.American .Ap Canada ,.o - Canadian ….Mag- T.Livorpoal.,.Quabec 2 FHOM UNITRD STATE.America.April 23.Boston .He, Liverpool Hermann.May 17.Now York .Southampton THE QUEBEC GAZETTE.QUEBEC, 61a MAY, 1856.SOMETHING MUST BE DONE.It is a very painful sight that of a ministry dying by inches, fifa one member falling off and then another, and it isscatcely less painful to observe the now.pitiably whining tone of the Grand Trunk Railway Contractors and Company in the almost vain hope of obtaining relief from a ministry—who-being-unable to help themselves cannot ‘help others. What a world of grief and floutie'# man of strong mind and firm ‘will'at the, head ‘of Canadian affairs would avert.Oh! for a solitary hour of “ the great findnoier ”” tocut, and carve, and slash the Gordian knot, which no man can untie.Oh! for but a minute of the resolute Hincks to dash us throngh that world of difficulties, which the acknowledged stupidity and want of resources of Jackson, Peto, Brassey and Betts have brought upon us.How he would just tell honorable: members had this wild swoop of our lost light cavalry been but made as acalculated sacrifice, mstead of an inexplicable mistake, and had it been supported by anything approaching to a regu- Jar ur co-ordinated movement, General Lip- randi’s fine host would have been anmhilated that very day.Such was the opinion of those who behield the effect, too late to profit by it ; amongst others of Prince Napoleon, who was a= much amazed and thunderstruck as anybody. They saw, but they had not foreseen ; nor would such a holocaust, if foreseen, have been permitted. After riding beyond the guns, colting down the gunners, breaking and shattering a co- umn of infantry, and dispersing the cavalry that rade to the rescue, the heroes turned to charge home again, their gory and streaming sabres no longer giving back the same flashes tothe sun, and they themselves showing but one man to every three who had galloped, five minutes before, from beneath the heights of the Allied circumvallation.Alas! dreadful as appeared such a change of numbers, the full alteration was not yet.Another tremendous double hurricane of shot, which, coming from opposite quarters, seemed to meet in their persons, passed among them ns they turned, and hall their remaining force vanished on the spot. Then part of the Russinn horse—a cloud of Cossack lances—closed in, and interpdging on their road; not only seemed to bart): but’ helped with’ the” smoke to hide therni eotiÿletely from the‘ anxiots gaze of their com: its inthe: Camp, bite Among ‘thesé it rae a solentn ‘moment when they thus fhientdl [giid farecrell 16 every remnant of the oble Light Brigade! quan- tun mutatus ! Bloody, lacerated, grim with the sweat and smoke of battle, about a hundred were seen together ; and nearly as many more straggled into the Camp before evening. These were the survivors of the 600! Lord Cardigan led this unparalleled charge, and escaped from it with- a few slight wounds ; and even among those heroes he was conspicuous for the serenity of his courage, his feats of horsemanship, his persopal prowess, and the impassive audacity with which he conducted the most desperate, probably, of all recorded military exploits. The Earl of Lucan was also wounded, while undauntedly superintending the movement.Woe ough! to mention ihat, much as the conduct of the men exceeds the limits of eulogy, the conduct of the eniogy, the conduct of the officers, one and all, wus more wonderful sills: - There were nineteen in‘the first: two regi- mets, and but three yeturned-; IT French horse feeling that this “battery; if-nbt immediately silenced, would Mnnikilate tHe.battle of Inkerman, baulked merely by timely discovery of the attempt; and the 4000 defeated Russians were bus an advance guard.Had the lesson of that warning blow been put to profit, the name of Inkerman would not now in so many thousands of households excite the feelings of a rebuking grief, and recall the remembrance of a scene of bloodshed equally profuse and profitless.Sir De Lacy Evans was now obliged by illness to go on board ship at Balaclava, but he went in deep uneasiness respecting the Bruish right flank. He even urged some precautions to be taken, and more men to be stationed in that quarter.More men could not be spared; bul what was executed afterwards could have been executed then; some intrenchments and some batteries could have made the brinks and the verges of the eminence impregnable.A reinforcement of 1000 French cavalry landed the very next day after that of the cavalry actions which we have described ; the works of the siege were continued amidst constant interruptions from the sorties of the rrison ; various ill managed arrangements, isordered with diurnal regularity the depot at Balaclava, whilst the French depot at Ka- miesch was acquiring an ever improved condition, and, in short, the ordinary business of a camp occupied the interval between the last encounter with the enemy and the fifth of November.TO BE CONTINUED.me (From the Toronto Leader, May 2,) Turee of the most respectable ministers, Messrs.Tache, Lemieux, and Cauchon, tendered their resignation on Wednesday evening ; but at the latest hour, we learn that they have been induced to retain their seats— a fact which probably gives the country the strongest practical assurance, that the public Exchequer is still in a satisfactory condition. The amount of popular contempt which such a budy as the present Ministry may bear, is incalculable. Its members have long passed that point in their Ministerial career, where they can be said to have any political character to lose.Men who are bold enough to enunciate the doctrine that the Governor General may select his advisers without reference to public opinion, have little reputation to sacrifice, and so long as Parliament affords them the means of purchasing support, resignations need not seriously aflect them.We will confess, however, that we did ex- peet, on Col.Tache’s part, a different line of conduct. We did think that political honor among the Lower Canada party had not entirely disappeared with the retirement of Mr.Lafontame.And if there was any one that we could have looked to with confidence to put an end to the present ministerial demoralization, it was the Receiver General. The ublic, if we except that portion which en- Joys he friendship of Mr.Gedrge E.Cartier— are not supposed to be versed in Cabiiiet se- ctets.“But wlien the public are made aware one diy, that thes Faotalèrs .of the "Govein- ment have resighied their offices, and when it is tépoñél, tie text, that they have réturn- éd, it fiseds ho great amount of penetration to describe, the governmental process. Most of ui can tell ‘as well as if we had: been members of the Council, what sort’ of tguments dre applied in obatinate cases of ministetial resigiiätion whaté.the Stale phy- sioidhs dfe ter men of the character which we ascribe to He present Adifinistration.So- betlV, {lie government of the country has become a very low sort of gambling. It is now, with Ministors, #’ question.of oñe local: cheme against anoflier.Broad principles df public icy at¥ of ib account. The inati- Koons fer wPhioh\\he Liberal party hâve con- ‘lendéd, âte rejatdad as scondary to (he success of adïme sectional.enlefftise.And Col.Tache seems to” lend himself to the game.‘In Mt.Latontiifie’s time, Résponsible Gov-.cest of préat principles was of mors account.ither Canals nor RullWays had so matd- eon Toler Rallyase b as to hike ‘them indifferent to their own political honor, rovided they were able to retain office.ssponsible -Govermmnent in the hands ôf Mr.Lafontaine’s sucoessots, bids fair to bé- come an instrumeht to cortupt every man who entoré Parliament with a: y his compositions :: And the conviction forcés grain of honesty.in| opposite what must be done!
