The elections for the English, Irish and Scotch | boroughs are now, we believe, concluded. There | are yet a few of the counties undecided. The Ministerial or Liberal section would, if united, be about equal to the Peelites and Protectionists combined. The official notice of the Bank of England, raising | the minimum rate of discount to 51 per cent., has revived all those discussions which in April last were so warmly agitated respecting the power of that establishment, and the prudence with which that power ! is exercised. In spite of the general gloom, we confidently anticipate that the resources of the country will be found adequate so meet the great demands which will be pressed upon us.We are now in a state of transition, from a system of commercial thraldom to one of comparative freedom in many articles of trade, and of entire freedom in the main articles of food.‘We shall doubtless suffer from the dearth we have undergone ; but the vital energies of the country continue dnimpaired, and we shall emerge from the present crisis with redoubled vigour, and with more enlarged experience. The Navigation Laws are defective in many points; but they are now interwoven with the commercial policy of every trading nation on the globe ; and, if we may judge from the papers lately submitted to Parliament, they have not operated either so detrimentally, or their suspension so advantageously, in the late importation of corn, as to cause alarm to either the advocates for their abolition or their supporters. The general convulsion which has taken place in the Money market, together with the decline in the price of grain, have produced already many serious failures in England, Ireland, and on the continent. The estitnated amount of their liabilities is stated to be about 2,000,000 sterling, Her Majesty and Royal Consort, with the Prince of Wales and Princess Royal, and suite, left Osborne Creek, Isle of Wight, on the 11th instant, for their tour through Scotland, which is expected to occupy about five weeks. The Royal squadron consisted of the Victoria and Albert, Black Eagle, Undine, Garland, Fairy, and Scourge. On Monday evening the Royal squadron anchored in Scottish waters, and passed the night in Loch Ryan. From thence the Royal squadron will proceed, on Tuesday morning, to the Clyde, where an assemblage of upwards of fifty steamers, many of the largest class, in the river, will welcome the arrival of her Majesty ; and in the other hills the potatoes were rotten, Mr.F.a few days ago, noticed that the vines in his potato field hud suddenly changed color. He examined the hills, and found that some of the potatoes were rotting. He at once dug the whole, believing the vegetables would keep better in the cellar than they would if left in the earth.Mr.Naaman Dillingham discovered the signs of the disease in one of his fields ; and he also commenced harvesting. In another of his fields, which will yield about 300 bushels of superior Chenangoes, no rot has appeared. It is thought that if a storm should come the potatoes in the ground would be injured.Mr.F.’s sced was of the Peach Blow variety, and was obtained in Palmyra, N.Y.He makes a point of digging his crop early. This measure is.considered the best known preventive of the rot.Last season Mr.David C.Freeman dug a few of his potatoes, and left the remainder in the ground. The result was that the latter mentioned potatoes all rotted, while the former kept good.Movixe.—The curiosity of the public was excited on Saturday by the novel process of removing a brick building, (including the collar and cellar walls which are of rough stone) upon 8 temporary railway, by means of jack screws.‘The building subjected to this process was the store of Mr.Gilbert, at the corner of Tremont and Bromfield strevts, which for the purpose of widening the latter street, bas been thus shoved back.‘The contents of the store in the meantime remained in it, and the ordinary business of it continued without interruption. This street, during its transition from a narrow to a wide street, has beun in a state of some confusion.Besides the removal, taking down, and building of stores on both sides of the street, the common sewer has been taken up and relaid at an inersased depth.‘The water pipes are get to be laid, after which the street will ba repaved. The Hudson Gazette of Tuesday last states that ou Thursday morning of last week, the barn of Mr.Wilhehnus Simmons, of the famous Anti-Rent town of Taghkanie, in Columbia county, was entirely consumed by fire “with all its contents, consisting of over one thousand bushels of vats, a large quantity of rye, hay, &c., being the entire crop of the farm.” Loss from $1,200 to $1,500, and no insurance. It scems the far-seeing gentleman discovered a large hornets’ nest under the eaves of his barn thus filled with hay and grain, and as a hornets’ nest will burn nearly as quick as tinder, the idea of destroying it by fire struck him so forcibly that, as the Gazette states, he took some matehes, tied them on a pole, aud with them set fire to the nest ; that burnt, uf course, as he expected, but “it blazed up, and immediately communicated to the roof; which being beyond his reach, he could not put it out!” Thus the ingenious gentleman, in order to destroy a hornets’ nest, burnt up his barn with all its conteuts,— [ Poughkeepsie Journal.) for it is manifest that this would secure to the St.Lawrence, the whole trade of the West with New York.We are informed that plans and estimates for this work, are now in preparation, and that should the Government de- eline to take the subject up, an immediate attempt will be made to secure the necessary funds through the capitalists of the State of New York.—( erald.)
