Lex leave to present to your notice some facts in relation to the same, which have come to my knowledge from personal observation, or from sources entitled to the fullest credit, All that extensive line of coast comprehending the Russian possessions on the north-west coast of America, from Mouut St.Elias south to the latitude of 3% der.40 sec.north, (the last being the boundary line between the Russian and American territories, ) together with the sole and exclusive right or privilege of frequenting all ports, bays, sounds, rivers, Sc., within said territory, and establishing forts and trading with the Indians, has been leased ur granted by the Russian American Far Company to the British Hudson's Bay Company, for the term of ten years from January, 1842; lor which the latter are i to pay, anuually, four thousand fur seal skins, or’ the value thereof in money, at the rate of thirty- two shillings cach—say £0,400 sterling, or 30,720 dollars.{in the above named lease, the Russians have, however, reserved to themselves the island of Sitka, or New Archangel ; in which place, you probably are aware, the Russines have a large settlement—the depot and bead quarters of their fur trade with the Fox islands, Alentian islands, and the coutineatal shore westward of Mount St.Elias.All the trading establishments of the Russians lately existing at Tumgass Stickene, and other places within said territory, leased to the Hudson’s Bay Company, have of consequence been broken up.Thus, the Hudson's Bay Company, nat content with monopolizinæ the heretofore profitable trade of the Americans, of supplying the Russian settlements on the northwest coast, have now completely cut them off also from all trade with the most valuable fur regions in the world.Whether the arrangements made between the Russians and English, above alluded to, are confur- States on the one part, and those natious respeu- tively on the other, 1 leave to your better knowledge to determine.Of the doings of the 1Iudson’s Bay Company at Puget’s Sound and the Columbia River, you are doubtless fully informed; those, however, lately commenced by them in California will admit of my saying a few words, At San Francisco they have purchased a large house, aa a trading establishment nud depot for merchandize, and they intend this year to have a place of the same kind at ench of the principal ports in Upper California.Two vessels are building in London, intended fur the same trade—that is, tor the coasting trade ; and after completing their cargoes, to carry them to England.These things, with others, give every indication that it is the purpuse of the Hudson's Bay Compauy to monopolize the whole hide and tallow trade of the coast of Califor- uin—a trade which now employs more than half a million of American capital.At the Sandwich Islands the company have a large trading establishmeut, and have commenced engaging in the commerce of the country, with evident designs to monopolize it, if possible, and to drive off the Americans, who have herotofore been its chief creators and conductors.I have been informed by one of the agents of the Hudson's Bay Compauy, that the agricultural and commercial operations of the English at F ges Sound, Columbia River, California and Sandwich Islands, are carried on, not actually by the Hudson’s Bay Company, but by what may be termed a branch of it—by govtlemen who are the chiel members an stockholders of said company, and who have associated themselves ander the firm of Pelly, Simpson & Co., in London, and with a capital of moro than 15,000,000.Cs * Seeing theso companies, then, marching with iron footstops to the possession of the most valus le po tion of the country in the North Pacific; and Vy sidering too, the immense amount of their capt hy the number, enterprise, and energy of their agen .| and tho polioy pursued by them, great reason is theta to fear that American commerce in that part 0 Le hoped that our Government will soon do something to break up the British settlements in the Oregon Territory, and thereby destroy the aource from which now emanate the most dire evils to American interests in the Western world.In the endeavour to bring about that desirable objest, you have done much ; and every friend to his country, every person interested in the commerce of the Pacifie, must feel grateful for the valuable services rendered them by you.With great respect, Your obedient Servant, ’ .Hexry A.Pierce, Hon.Lewis F.Liv, Senator of the U.S., Washington.Taming Horses.—A successful mode of taming the wildest horses by breathing into their nostrils, has lately been tested by numerous experiments in England.Mr.Catlin in his Manners and Customs of the North American Indians, says he has often tried the experiment so successfully on buffalo calves, in coucurrence with the custom of the country, that they would follow at the heels of his horse as closely and affectionately as if accompanying their dams.The Indians tame the wild horses in the same manner, after having caught them with the laso.Mr.Ellis, of Windsor, England, chanced to read the above facts.He determined to try the experiment.He did so upon a yearling colt, particularly unmanageable, and so successfully as to astonish the owner and grooms who had tried in vain to subdue it.Mr.Ellis is of opinion, that this is the secret of the celebrated Irish horse tamers, who displayed wonderful powers in this way.They pretended to whisper to the animal, and played with its head, and then probably breathed into its nostrils,— This is a valuable discovery, if true, and may be the means of preventing a great many accidents.It is, at any rate, worth trying, and we, therefore, make it publio for the benefit of those iuterested.—( Phi- | ladelphia Gazette.) the otber half, subject to the payment of interest at 5 per cent, annually.10 be deducted at death, or paid off at convenience, — By this arrangement, it becomes easy for a person of moderate income to secure a provision for nis family; under diferent direaces of the lungs, to give you a statement of the good effects 1 have experienced from the use of the Vegetable Pulmonary Balsam.Having from my youth up been troubled with different complaints of the lungs, sueh as spitting of blood, a dry troublesome cough, frequent hoarseness, with severe fits of coughing, and indeed all the sympioms of consumption, and from time to time I have consulted several eminent physicians, and have taken much medicine, but received litile or no relief, and at last they told me there was no help for me ; that my case was beyond the resch of their medicines.In the spring of 1827, [ was advised by a friend to try the Vegetable Pulmonary Balsam.1 obtained two bottles, and on trial I was surprised to find so sudden and effectual relief which it gave me, and after using it about five weeks, all my complaints were entirely removed, and I was restored to good health, Since that time 1 have kept it constantly by me, in case of the appearance of any of the above complaints.have known a large number of cases where all other medicines having failed of affording any relief, the Balsam was at length resorted to, and spevdily effected a cure, I would, therefore, recommend to every person that has any ofthe above complaints, on their first appearance to take the Vegetable Pulinonary Balsam, which they will find a safe, convenient snd positive cure.Respecttully yours, T.P.ME .New Bedford, Mass,, July 30, 1841.RRIAM COUNTERFEITS.BEWARE O P SITION.Each genuine botile is euclosed in a blue wrapper, ou which is a yellow lubel, signed by WM.JON'N.CUTLER.None other can be genuine of a later date than December, 1859.The signature of SAMPSON REED will be continued for a short time.‘ The great celebritv of the Vegetablo Pulmonary Balsam hasbeen the cause of attempts to introduce spurious articles which by partially assuming the naine of the genuine, are calculated to mislead and deceive the publie.Among these maxtures are ** Carter's Compound Pulmonary Balsam, ** American Pulmonary Balam * « Vegetable Pulmonary Balsamic Syrup,” + Fulmonary Balsam,” and othere.— Purchasers should inquire for the true article by its whole name—THE VEGETABLE PULMONARY BALSA M, and sce that it bas tbe marks and signatures of the genuine, isach bottle and seal is stamped, * Vegetable Pulmonary Balsam,” Co Sole Agent for the above in Quebec, JOHN MUSSON CHEMIST AND DRUGGIsT, Head of Upper Town Hill, 8th June, 1842, LONDON-MADE CABINET, COTTAGE AND PICCOLO PIANO FORTES, IN MAIIOGANY AND ROSEWOOD CASES, Manufactured expressly for this climate.Apoly at 6, D'Auteuil Street, Esplanede.Quebec, 18th May, 1842.4d 21eh=s, ATUITRS MEUT ‘SEUL ‘HIdY U1LE ‘Oagan D, *doyg 1184118 unas aq Awl SIQIET PUB POOL JO STONE —¢) *N “SLIFWLG SIGUVE) UNV NNY Ly JO YZNH09 "AYSINVU NS AVMOIK Busway adv] puv Sazopy ‘Suppo “Suwsundap ‘ALID STME NT (TUSSVANNS FR OL JON #131S Ÿ NI ORLLNIVd TYLN3INVNYO ONV NIVId Jo satgougsq snolizA 673 [ju ut SIBp40 912153X3 0} Apuos ous Saaquosque aml, Supureg 94H 710008 » usig ‘asno CALEDONIA WATER.UST RECEIVED from the justly celebrated eÿ * Caledonia Springs,” a fresh supply of SALINE AND GAS WATER.The great cificacy of these Medicinal Waters needs no comment, farther than to say.were the value of them ig well known in Quebec as they are in Montical, lewla- milies would be without them, ' ‘The Subscriber having been appointed Agent for the Lower Town of Quebec, intends keeping a constant.and fresh supply, and at reduced prices.M.RAY, Sous le For Street.Quebec 11th Ostober, 1841.ns 22, STEAM-ENGINES FOR SALE.- VERY superior Steam-Engine of 60 horse power, high pressure, with Boilers complete, nearly new—having been run only a few months.This Engine, on inspectiun, will be found equal to any in Ca nada, both ns regards construction and’ workmanstip;
