that of Malala Yousafzai. As a young girl, Malala defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012, but survived and went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.Malala's Magic Pencil, is the autobiographical tale of how Malala was inspired by her Dad to love education and how the power of learning and words are greater than the power of violence and hate.It is a beautifully illustrated exploration of her story. Her story is scary, but filled with hope because she has survived and gone on to use her experience to make a difference on a global scale in the education of girls and women. My second recommendation is in honour of the women who lost their lives trying to become scientists and engineers in Montreal 29 years ago.The victims of the 1989 massacre were Geneviève Bergeron, 21, Hélène Colgan, 23, Nathalie Croteau, 23, Barbara Daigneault, 22, Anne-Marie Edward, 21, Maud Haviernick, 29, Barbara Klucznik, 31, Maryse Laganière, 25, Maryse Leclair, 23, Anne-Marie Lemay, 22, Sonia Pelletier, 23, Michèle Richard, 21, Anne St-Arneault, 23, and Annie Turcotte, 21.These women may have done amazing things in their careers if they not been tragically cut short.Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty, is a book about how questions and curiosity drive us to become great thinkers and inventers and problem solvers.Another masterful creation of Andrea Beaty who also brought out Rosie Revere, Engineer, is inspired by real life science celebs like Ada Lovelace and Marie Curie.Children learn to persevere and use their curiosity and questions to solve problems in the world and feel inspired to be whatever they dream of being. We cannot erase the tragic events which have taken place in our past.We can help raise children who are inspired to create a beautiful world where all people are welcome and have the opportunity to reach their potential. We must teach our children to love and be kind and to never stop asking questions.-Shanna Bernier Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , December 7, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Weather TODAY: SNOW HIGH -8 LOW -16 SATURDAY: SUNNY HIGH -12 LOW -20 SUNDAY: SUNNY HIGH -9 LOW -10 MONDAY: SUNNY HIGH -5 LOW -16 TUESDAY: SUNNY HIGH -8 LOW -11 The Record e-edition There for you 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week.Wherever you are.Access the full edition of the Sherbrooke Record as well as special editions and 30 days of archives.Renew or order a new 12- month print subscription and get a 12-month online subscription for an additional $5 or purchase the online edition only for $82.21.Record subscription rates (includes Quebec taxes) 1 year print: $178.21 6 month print: $97.73 3 month print: $50.59 12 month web only: $125.00 1 month web only: $11.25 Web subscribers have access to the daily Record as well as archives and special editions.Subscribing is as easy as 1,2,3: 1.Visit the Record website: www.sherbrookerecord.com 2.Click e-edition.3.Complete the form and wait for an email activating your online subscription.GO O D RE A D S Lennoxville library White Ribbon Day CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 the newspaper and gave the students an opportunity to build their own ads to try and sell a Townships staple, Christmas trees. The students then headed to the pagination station where staffers Samantha Young and Emilie Hackett showed them how content is put onto the page. Before the visit, the SES newsies had prepared their own articles about what’s new in Grade 3.The students took turns laying out the page, sizing photos and deciding where the most important news items should be.The following is the news of the day according to Eryou’s Grade 3 class: Christmas Bazaar.Saturday, December 1st, 2018.At the Christmas bazaar, you could have bought toys and games.¬ There were special treats to eat and drink. There was hot chocolate, McDonald’s orange juice and many other things. To eat, there was chicken noodle soup, chilli, bread, popcorn, muffins, cookies and lots more. The amazing S.E.S.choir performed many songs and even Santa came. Our school mascot Sparky the dragon was there too. There was face painting for kids who wanted to have their faces painted. For people who wanted their nails painted, they could have someone do that too! In the middle of the gym, there was a silent auction of things you could bid on.The people who wasted the most of their money would win.The money goes to the school’s P.P.O.and they help us go on cool field trips.Grade 3 Sports Often at small recess, grade three students can go to the big gym to play sports.Sometimes you can play football. You can play Mr.G style dodgeball if you want to.You can play a game called ten catches. Many kids really like playing hockey. Some kids like to play soccer. The teachers tell you what you will be playing when you arrive in the big gym at small recess. Our playground When you get to Grade 3, which is our grade, you can play on the other side of the playground. We like that side of the playground because the play structure is really neat.We can hang from bars and climb on walls that have holes. We have basketball nets in a nice big basketball court. There is this kind of snake thing that bounces you up and down.We have a couple of places where you can play tetherball.Tetherball is a game where a big ball is tied on a string and it hangs from a post.We have painted squares for the four squares game.We have a buddy bench you can sit on if you feel like you don’t have friends to play with. When you sit on the buddy bench alone, someone will see that and come ask you to play with them. There are a lot of neat things you can do on the big kids’ side of the playground at S.E.S.Friday , December 7, 2018 Page 3 Be sure to stop by Provigo Robert Lafond in Lennoxville, located at 169 Queen Street, between 10 a.m.and 1 p.m.on Saturday to support the cause.LOCAL NEWS The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Specialist of Chrysler and Dodge trucks for over 40 years.Michel Comeau thanks you for the support that you have shown him for the past year at Magog Concept Chrysler.Always a pleasure to serve you ! By Nick Fonda At a brief ceremony on Monday evening at the Richmond Town Hall, mayor Bertrand Ménard presented Beverly Taber Smith with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. The contribution that volunteers make to our society is not something that goes un-noticed.The Conference Board of Canada estimated that in 2017, the work done by volunteers had an economic value of almost $56 billion, or 2.6 % of Canada’s gross domestic product. The social contribution of Canada’s 12 million volunteers is inestimable. These facts explain why all three levels of government—municipal, provincial, and federal—make a point of publicly acknowledging volunteers, often during Volunteer Week, which usually falls in April. The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, first awarded in 1995 (although under a different name), represents national recognition at the highest level.Recipients of this award are individuals who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment through their dedicated volunteerism. It is awarded after the candidates, whose names have been submitted for consideration, have been reviewed by an advisory committee, a process that can take a year or more to complete.Sometimes the medal is presented at Rideau Hall by the Governor General, although presentation ceremonies are held throughout the year, in communities across Canada.Because of time constraints (the mayor and councilors present for the ceremony had a council meeting to attend) the speeches in Richmond on Monday night were both short and heartfelt.Carol Mooney, of the Sherbrooke and District branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women, initiated the submission of Beverly Taber Smith’s nomination for the Sovereign’s Medal last spring. She spoke of Bev’s long involvement with the CFUW, an organization that for almost 100 years has been working to promote the status of women, human rights, public education, and social justice.Dwane Wilkin thanked Bev for her years of work with the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network, a non-profit, province-wide organization dedicated to preserving the cultural and natural heritage of Quebec and promoting a greater understanding of the history of Quebec’s English speaking communities.Gerald Cutting, president of Town- shippers’ Association, reminded those present that the very successful Town- shippers’ Day held in Danville some two decades ago was chaired by Bev, who continues to be active, now with the Town- shippers’ Research and Cultural Foundation. Finally, Patricia Keenan underlined Bev’s longstanding and ongoing involvement with the Richmond St.Patrick’s Society. While she didn’t speak at the ceremony, Esther Healy, archivist at the Richmond County Historical Society, is similarly recognizant of and grateful to Bev for her energy, enthusiasm, and work ethic.“I have known Bev since childhood when we attended St.Francis High School in Richmond,” said Esther.“In later years, when we both returned to Melbourne from teaching positions elsewhere, we reconnected and I came to value Bev’s rich spirit of generosity and her unending energy and enthusiasm toward volunteering with many community organizations.” “Bev is a valuable volunteer with RCHS,” she continued, “and has served the past dozen years in executive roles. She completed two very successful terms as President, 2012-13 and 2013-14.During those years, she played a leading role in improving the organization’s financial status by supporting and actively participating in several unique and successful fundraising events.Through her enthusiasm and leadership, the coffers of RCHS were enhanced enough to begin the process of selling the former Museum and purchasing another suitable home for the Museum and Archival collections.” “Bev is a very ‘hands-on’ volunteer,” Esther added, “and with the help of others, gets the jobs done, whatever their nature. She stands apart from others doing similar work in that she not only sees the ‘big picture’ of the many organizations in which she gets involved but she actively encourages the teams and commits herself, as well, to the work of getting the jobs done.” Esther finished, “Bev’s contributions to the greater Richmond community through her extraordinary volunteerism have enabled organizations such as the historical society to have a larger role with all citizens including youth and recognition within the English and French- speaking community. Not only does she assist the organization in the celebration the rich history of the greater Richmond area but she helps the community look to the future with creative and meaningful activities.” Beverly Taber Smith recalled her first volunteer experience.“I remember Marjorie Goodfellow and Della Goodsell at my kitchen table in the fall of 1986 asking me if I’d like to chair Townshippers’ Day in Danville.I had recently returned here after living in Montreal, so I didn’t Page 4 Friday , December 7, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , December 7, 2018 Page 5 Submitted by Laurence Morin from CALACS Aggression Estrie Sexual exploitation is the practice of one or many individuals obtaining sexual favours, financial gain, or profit/advancement of any kind by using another person’s sex without regard for their wishes. It is the coercion of a person to submit sexually in exchange for money and such.Is an equitable relationship possible in the context of Prostitution? The nature of prostitution is such that one is at the mercy of the client’s desire and must ensure their satisfaction. In order to do that, a prostitute must usually put aside their own needs. When a person does not wish to perform a sexual act and does, despite their discomfort, it affects their self-respect, body and soul.A sexual experience should ideally be an intimate encounter between two people who respect one another and who engage as equals, consensually, and respectful of each others’ needs, desires, rights and limitations.Consent means the freedom to choose without pressure, which is never the case with prostitution since the person with the money / goods holds the power. Moreover, the demands made by clients are often violent or degrading.Prostitution is not a choice, it is a lack of all other options. The magnitude of this problem in the Easter Townships. It’s difficult to paint a clear picture on this subject because prostitution is often surrounded by criminal activity. The subject remains taboo as long the women being sexually exploited risk being judged or condemned. In order to shed light on the reality of prostitution in the Townships, CALACS issued a number of surveys to the adult population in Estrie.More than 400 people responded to the call.14 % of respondents said that they had endured sexual exploitation in their lives (most were women).Questions from the same survey Do you know women and girls who have experienced sexual exploitation?YES : 39 % How old were they? They end up in different areas of sexual exploitation: •Escort services •Nude dance •Internet prostitution (photos, webcam) •Street prostitution •Erotic massage •Pornography •Prostitution as means of survival These types of sexual exploitation occur in a variety of private and public environments: bars, strip clubs, apartments, hotels, on the internet, in private parties etc.Sexual exploitation is a form of sexual assault.Prostitution is everywhere In which towns do people practice activities related to prostitution? What are the emotional consequences of sexual exploitation? Here are how a few participants responded : •Living in isolation •Experiencing nightmares and flashbacks •Difficulty returning to school •Fear of reprisals •Depression •Fear of Intimacy •Living with guilt and shame •And more Juvenile prostitution exists in the Easter Townships 136 adolescents from the region also responded to the survey 18 % of adolescents know someone who is involved with prostitution.71 % of these people are 18 years or younger.43 % of respondents know an adolescent who has been propositioned sexually in exchange for money, goods, drugs or other services. We were able to see that a huge number of adolescent girls are asked to exchange sex for money, goods or services. These propositions may often come from friends and partners, but also from strangers. Some moving testimonials Approximately 20 women participated in CALACS’ project on sexual exploitation. They were very generous in sharing their experiences, their troubles and their thoughts on the matter.Half of these women were introduced to prostitution when they were minors.Every one of them was younger than 24 years old when they started.Sharing their stories “There are paths in life that lead you there. You don’t decide to do that when you’re 14 because it looks cool.If I go back to the first time it happened, I was 15 years old.I lost my virginity at the age of 12, in a horrific way. Then when I was 15, I ended up at a party Record Staff The vulnerability of young Town- shippers when it comes to mental health and social adaptation is on the rise according to the second edition of the Quebec Survey of High School Youth Health. The survey, whose first edition was published in 2011, dealt with twenty different topics and was filled out by 5,000 respondents a response rate of 92%.The most worrying finding in the Es- trie region is the high level of psychological distress, which sits at 29 per cent among young people, as it has increased significantly since 2010-2011.At that time the level was recorded as being 21 per cent. The increase for girls at this level is even greater, rising to 39 per cent up from 19 per cent.Anxiety, depression, and eating disorders are also on the radar for young people in the area, as up to 20 per cent of young Townshippers have been diagnosed with one of these disorders in recent years. The vast majority of young people feel that they benefit from a high level of social support in the home environment (78 per cent).Young people also recieve social support in their school environment and demonstrate a strong sense of belonging (62 per cent) to their school."In Estrie, we are already actively working with our partners to improve the health of high school students,” said Public Health Director, Dr.Mélissa Généreux.“In the coming weeks, we will be meeting with youth groups in two schools in the Sherbrooke area to hear what they have to say about the results published. We want to better understand how our young Estriens live." By H.Damon Matthews Professor and Concordia University Research Chair in Climate Science and Sustainability, Concordia University, Glen Peters Research Director, Center for International Climate and Environment Research - Oslo, Myles Allen Professor of Geosystem Science, Leader of ECI Climate Research Programme, University of Oxford, Piers Forster Professor of Physical Climate Change; Director of the Priestley International Centre for Climate, University of Leeds The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5?has opened a window to limit global warming to 1.5?above pre-industrial levels, but carbon dioxide emissions are projected to increase in 2018 for the second year in a row.If this trend continues, emissions will drive global temperatures to 1.5?in less than 16 years. The Climate Clock we created shows how quickly we are approaching 1.5?of global warming, given current emissions trends. Here, we present our third annual update of the clock in light of the most recent scientific data, released on Dec.5, 2018.The IPCC special report showed that 1.5?is an important threshold for many climate impacts.Weather extremes such as heat waves and extreme precipitation events are expected to increase with every increment to global temperature. The risk of irreversible ice sheet loss and consequent sea level rise increases sharply between 1.5?and 2?, and nearly all corals could be wiped out at 2?warming.According to the latest data from both the IPCC special report and the Global Carbon Project, we are heading towards 1.5?in a little less than 16 years. The IPCC report itself gave a range of 12-35 years to 1.5?, if warming continues at the current rate.Unlike the IPCC report, the Climate Clock accounts for the fact that emissions are still rising, which will cause warming to accelerate.Tracking the progression of climate mitigation The Climate Clock was launched in 2015 as a way to visualize the timeline over which global warming is occurring, and to provide a measuring stick against which we can track climate mitigation progress. If emissions keep rising, the date we reach 1.5?will move closer. If emissions start to decrease, the date for 1.5?will move further away. Each year we have updated the clock to reflect the latest global CO2 emissions trend and rate of climate warming. In 2016, we saw the third year of stable CO2 emissions. This lack of increase in CO2 emissions extended the timeline to 1.5?by a year. This year, our update of the climate clock also reflects a new estimate of the remaining carbon budget from the IPCC 1.5?report.This budget, which represents the total amount of allowable CO2 emissions between 2018 and the time we reach 1.5?, has been revised upward to 770 billion tonnes of CO2.By itself, this increase in allowable emissions pushes the 1.5?date further away by more than two years.A simple methodology The Climate Clock answers the question: given the current rate of emissions and level of human-induced warming, and assuming the emissions trend over the past five years continues into the future, how long will it be before the remaining allowable emissions for 1.5?are used up?To date, human activities have emitted close to 2,300 billion tonnes of CO2 since 1870 as a result of fossil fuel combustion and deforestation. These and other greenhouse gas emissions have caused global temperatures to increase by 1.06?relative to the 1850-1900 average.Over the past five years, annual CO2 emissions from fossil fuels have increased by an average of 0.4 billion tonnes each year, and in 2018, are expected to reach a record high of 37.1 billion tonnes. In creating the Climate Clock, we assume that this five-year fossil-fuel CO2 emissions trend will continue into the future, and that CO2 emissions from deforestation and land-use change remain constant at the most recent five-year average of 5.3 billion tonnes per year.By using the IPCC carbon budget estimate, we also assume that pollutants other than CO2, such as methane and nitrous oxide, will be responsible for approximately 25 per cent of the warming between now and 1.5?.How confident are we in our time estimate? Our time estimate is sensitive to the uncertainties associated with the climate response to CO2 emissions. Here, we provide a best estimate, which means that there is a 50 per cent chance of reaching 1.5?before the clock’s date, and similarly that there is a 50 per cent chance that the 1.5?date will occur later than shown. To increase the confidence that we have not overestimated the remaining time, we could instead use a smaller estimate of the remaining carbon budget.Setting allowable future emissions to 570 billion tonnes rather than 770 billion tonnes, for example, would move the 1.5?date four years earlier to about the year 2030.This in turn would increase our confidence of not overestimating the time remaining before we reach 1.5?from 50 to 67 per cent. How do we add time to the clock?Perhaps the most important uncertain factor is the question of how hard the world will try to decrease future CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions.Clearly, if fossil fuel CO2 emissions continue to increase, we will continue to lose time between now and when we reach 1.5?.Similarly, if the rate of deforestation or emissions of methane accelerate, this will also move 1.5?closer in time.Current national emissions targets are not sufficient to avoid 1.5?: if all countries meet their 2030 targets, this would delay 1.5?by only half a year.Similarly, holding CO2 emissions constant at today’s level would buy only 14 months of additional time.If we are able to decrease CO2 emissions to zero by the year 2080, we might avoid 2?of global temperature increase, but would pass 1.5?before the year 2040.To actually avoid 1.5?altogether, CO2 emissions from both fossil fuels and deforestation would need to be eliminated by the year 2050.Avoiding the impacts of more than 1.5?of warming will require individuals, businesses and governments to cooperate and prioritize climate action at all levels of decision-making.It is only through bold and ambitious action that we will be able to add enough time to the clock to avoid the most dangerous consequences of continued climate warming. This is a daunting challenge, and we may not succeed. But we will clearly fail if we do not try much harder than we have done so far.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , December 7, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record This year, our update of the climate clock also reflects a new estimate of an event of that magnitude but I said I’d look at the reports of the previous T-Day and see what I could do.” The 1987 Townshippers’ Day in Danville was a great success, in more ways than one.“With relatively few contacts of my own,” Bev recalled, “I did a lot of asking around to find people with the necessary expertise. What I learned after the event was that I had a number of people on that committee who didn’t normally work together.” “What I like about volunteering,” she continued, “is the interaction with people.I learn about what’s going on, and I enjoy working on projects. It’s better than sitting at home and watching TV.” She traces her interest in community life to her Grandfather Taber.“He was involved in numerous organizations,” she said, “and he was always attending meetings. One of my cousins tells me that I take after him.” After the speeches, the crowd of 50 or so toasted Bev and enjoyed a wine-and-cheese type buffet, an occasion to catch up with old friends and make new ones.Towards the end of the evening, still smiling but momentarily puzzled, Bev looked at her medal and asked, “But, when will I wear it?” As it turns out, there is an established protocol outlined in an official guidebook. In part, it states: “Insignia are worn at all official occasions where it is appropriate, generally as indicated on the invitation.Full-size insignia are worn for all occasions before sundown and sometimes in the evening for certain occasions: Parades and other military ceremonies, change of command, consecration of colours, graduations, military funerals, Remembrance Day, and any other commemorative ceremonies, the speech from the throne, state funerals, New Year’s Levee, and investitures.” If there are relatively few occasions to wear the medal itself, Bev received a small lapel pin, and that she can wear at any time.Nor is Beverly Table Smith sitting on her laurels. On Tuesday evening, the day after receiving her award, she was again sitting with a committee, this one organizing an Irish Festival to take place next March.“No, we weren’t at my kitchen table,” she says with a laugh.“There were too many of us and we had to sit at the dining room table.” Congratulations, Bev! By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) Some days we have a little more spring in our step.Where does this vitality come from?It may be because we have eaten well or because we have had a good sleep the night before, but other times it is just a gift.Yesterday I was dragging my feet and today I feel lifted.Does this happen to you?On good days, when I am full of vitality, I sometimes find myself humming “I can see clearly now, the rain is gone.” There is a vitality that comes from the body and we have more of this when we are young. There is also a vitality that comes from the spirit that is beyond age.Is there much in this world that is more beautiful than an elderly person who is full of vitality? They greet you with bright eyes, enthusiasm, and curiosity. They are always open to something new.No doubt life has brought them the same kinds of disappointments and troubles that we all face, but they have found a way to tap into that deeper vitality. This vitality of the spirit transcends age.It transcends the aches and pains of the body and lifts us to a new place.Jesus tells his followers that he offers the living water. We are encouraged to drink from the well and be renewed in him.Freedom from thirst, vitality, and even eternal life are the things that we are offered when we choose to follow him.It is the path of life.2) Vitality is a spirit-filled, irresistible quality of aliveness.Must it diminish with age, or does it paradoxically become more ever vital than before?Vitality is what charms and overwhelms me in the very young.A week or so ago I was blessed to spend time in the company of a mother and her three small children. While we waited for an appointment, the two not strapped into the stroller seemed suspended in a state of perpetual motion.I was exhausted just watching, and logged at least two days worth of exercise merely turning my head to keep them in sight.Among ageing companions, signs of vitality are inspirational and often move me to awe and admiration. There's a whole group of people with Parkinson's who show up at a local gym two days a week to put their bodies through the most demanding routines, my spouse among them. And they do it all with joy and mutual encouragement.Just being in their spirited presence reminds me to not take my own vitality for granted. Each time I try to match their courage and stamina, keeping active as best I can.Whenever my spirit lags, and the body trails behind, I am inspired by vitality in others. There's a young woman who faithfully appears with shovel in hand at every heavy snowfall. This morning I opened the door to find her laughing as she heaved and scooped, shouting, "Isn't it beautiful?" And suddenly it was! Yes, I'll still have to be careful and watch out for ice at every step, but her joyful energy renewed my whole day's approach from one of dread to gratitude for the fresh beauty of the snowy world.Let us vow to keep our vitality as long as we are alive.Vivre, vivre, vivre l'amour - vivre la compagne! 3) Should I begin by apologizing? With the word vitality, my mind flashed to all those health commercials, geared to senior citizens, selling some new pill or product that promises increased vitality - if you spend lots of money. That is not what I want to say about vitality. In my ministry I have served in many churches that were full of vitality. This exuberance was not based on the large number of people in the pews or the size of their bank accounts.Instead, a common thread was compassion and joy. They contained people who truly cared about God, and others, and lived life to the full. There was courageous dialogue about faith and openness to the divine spirit. Some of my smallest congregations have shown the most vitality. The denomination I am in is going through some major changes. Many of our communities struggle to survive and wonder what the future holds.Churches are closing, and others must make difficult choices. Many wonder if modern technology, a new program, or a different approach might help them return to a past when there were more people.I see things differently. We are communities of faith, not trend followers. When we live simply, have honest conversations, care deeply about our communities, and open ourselves to see the divine in others, our vitality will be evident for the world to see.4) Sometimes my vitality seems high and my to-do list grows accordingly.Bright ideas abound for home improvement projects and new church programs.Other days I sleep in late and drag myself around all day.My vitality has a lot to do with how well I treat my body.If I overeat, under sleep, work so much I have no time to play my system becomes unbalanced and uncooperative. But the temptation to overdo in any one of these areas has a lot to do with not stopping to check-in with how we are feeling and not valuing our lives for the fragile and impermanent gifts that they are.The envelope that is our bodies requires tender loving care. Our vitality is dependent on how well we respect that fact. One word, four voices - now it's your turn to chime in: What does vitality look like in your life?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dillabough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She Opening to the Spirit Today’s word: Vitality Volunteer If you don’t already know country singer Gary Darling, it is time for you to discover the hugely talented musician. He is a very quiet person, maybe a little shy, but don’t let that fool you.The singer is very passionate about his music and he is a perfectionist as well in everything he does.Darling was born in Cowansville on Oct 24.The year doesn’t matter, since he barely looks a day older than 49.He was raised in a family where music was very important and very present. His mom Nellie and dad Durward worked for years as the duo Deo & Melody Ranch Boys.Darling was heavily but pleasantly exposed to traditional country music.“I am one of three children and we all play music, for that was what was in our home.I started playing with my father when I was 13 years old,” remembered Darling. His beginning in music was kind of peculiar but it turned out well.“A bass player walked out in the middle of a wedding, so I learnt to play bass on stage with the help of Ross Roach (steel guitar player).” That moment could have been traumatic for a young man, but he had this music in his soul.Darling never took lessons, he simply plays by hear and with all his heart. His main influence was his dad who loved classic country, so he got to hear plenty of Ray Price and Faron Young as he grew up.He went on to play with his parents for a while before he started playing with other bands.“I did not sing until I was 20 years old and my first song was Buck Owen’s ‘A 11’.I sang at Gilmore corner in Cowans- ville. But understand I do not consider myself a musician.I sing and if I had my way, I would sing harmony,” said the humble gentleman.By definition, the word musician defines a person who plays an instrument. In Darling’s case his vocal chords are his instrument, therefore, he needs to be referred to as a musician. His voice is pure country and it conveys all the emotions intended. After his father retired from playing music, Gary Darling went on to play with many other groups, such as with Arnold Whiton at the Prince of Wales Hotel and with the late Steve Powers in the band Hobo Junction, just to name a few.He finally got with the band 747, with his brother Duffy on bass, Maurice Singfield on guitar and Russell Tryhorn on the drums.“We recorded a 45rpm, including a song my dad wrote titled ‘Long Long Road to Nashville’ and a song written by Maurice, ‘Eastern Townships Land’ with which he won third prize in a song contest across Canada,” Darling explained.Electrician by trade, musician by night, he has been playing for over 25 years in the area with many different musicians such as the late Steve Powers, Allen Baily, Earl Matin and many others.“I am grateful for the time I have had with all the great musicians, I played with, because you learn something every night you are on stage” stressed the entertainer about his career in music.“I have played in so many places such as the Royal Canadian Legion in Waterloo, the Richmond Fair, the Brome Fair, the Maples Hotel, the Four Corners Hotel and the Brome Hotel,” he said.Of course like many other singers, he has entertained a lot of people in a lot of places and he is well respected by his peers.“They were a good family. We dedicated one of the recording studios to the Darling family, here at Knowlton’s radio station CIDI with the Dad’s words ‘Long, Long Road to Nashville,’” said Dewey Derrell.Gary Darling even had the pleasure to play in St-Tite for their big annual festival. He has also been a favourite at the Wish Foundation Music Fest held on the Ayer’s Cliff Fairgrounds every year. Now like many others have been forced to do, due to a lack of places where full bands can set up and perform, he plays gigs solo, with his computer. He also shares his passion with elderly people and is very generous with his time.He plays for the seniors’ homes such as Courville‘s nursing home in Waterloo and the nursing home in Knowlton.Whether it is for a wedding or the Mother’s Day breakfast for the Children’s Wish held on Mother’s Day at the Royal Canadian Legion in Waterloo or a family reunion, Darling is always willing to sing and entertain people.“I try hard to be as professional as I can be.I am a guy who loves old country music.I don’t like to talk about myself but I hope my voice will tell,” said Darling, about his performing at Burroughs Falls. He will be performing at the next Country Music Appreciation Jam, the Christmas edition on Dec.15, at The Bur- rough’s Falls Dance Hall. The show will start at 1:00 p.m.with Bobbi Dee and the house band The Honky Tonk Rebels, followed by singer Marie-Claude Proulx who will open the show for the main feature, Gary Darling.Do not miss the show, as you get to Record Staff From Dec.9 until Jan 20, the Beaulne Museum in Coaticook will host an exhibition of wax representations of the baby Jesus.A material used by sculptors since Antiquity, wax has several advantages: it is malleable, economical and it does not require sophisticated instruments. It also offers characteristics that are closer to flesh by its color, transparency and a certain luminosity that perfectly matches the appearance of the baby Jesus. The making of wax Jesus dolls dates as far back as the devotion shown to Jesus the infant. It was the work of several religious congregations in France and was established in Quebec with the Ursulines. For practicing Catholics, the installation of the nativity scene at the foot of the Christmas tree is customary as the holiday season approaches. It is therefore a great opportunity to present a brief history of the tradition. The exhibition shows a typological diversity of Jesus made of wax by different religious congregations. This collection was part of a vast one owned by Mrs.Lina Côté, a resident of the Coaticook area. For more information, call 819-849-6560.December 7 - With the holiday season upon us, our commitment to working out can be negatively affected by so many holiday temptations.Think for a moment of the formidable challenges that lurk quietly, feigning innocence at almost every turn you make. It’s true, fresh baked shortbread cookies don’t grow wings and fly down your throat. They can’t shout out, “We’re delicious! Your diet can wait!” No, they just sit there quietly, their intoxicating aroma taking over the room until you cave.Yet you must resist.Going back to your previous strong willed self will not be easy. The chocolates are equally sinister. They lie in wait, almost daring someone to walk past but once the eyes are fixed, its game over and the chocolates win again.“I’ll take a box of those, please.Better make it two.” The challenge is making the time to exercise despite the busy days of shopping, putting up decorations, work and family commitments.Simply put, your workout routine has taken the back seat for this month.Instead of lacing up your shoes for a stress reducing run, you’re preparing for war at the mall as you go to battle for gifts and holiday favourites.Even when your focus is on the target gift just 20 paces or so up ahead, the chocolates could appear and stop you in your tracks.Have I mentioned eggnog?Nobody has ever gone undefeated against eggnog, which can add inches to your waistline and should be handled with extreme caution. Now is the time to remember all the sublime effort that you’ve invested in your self.If you gained an extra kilogram or two in one week, it will take two weeks of hard work to lose it.Consider this.If you quit your athletic program after working hard for six months to lose weight, whatever you lost will be back where it was in just three months unless extraordinary changes were made to your diet.Remember why you started working out.Along with your fitness goal in writing under the fridge magnet, these fitness tips this will keep you on track to a healthy mind and body during this festive season.1.Plan ahead and write down your workout dates and times. This will help you to stick to your workouts which will provide the energy you’ll need for last minute shopping and other commitments.Tip: running early mornings may be the best option to make sure you have the necessary time to get everything done.2.Change frequency of your runs - if there is less time to work out then either cut down on the days or length of your runs. This way you are still working out and at least maintaining your fitness.3.Stress reliever - remember exercising helps you to de-stress and increases your energy level.Making time to exercise will enable you to focus on the task at hand.Walking instead of running is better than nothing. The key is to stay fit as much as you can during this busy time of year.4.Social - going for a group run or with a friend will keep you committed.Try a new route that has Christmas lights to keep it fun.5.Incorporate cross training or try a new activity to stay motivated with your program.Try out something new like Pilates.Eating healthy, keeping track of your food intake, getting enough sleep and drinking plenty of water will keep you hydrated and energized for working out and that other huge challenge, shopping.Enjoy that chocolate at the party but be careful or they’ll get you.www.runwithit.ca Twitter: @christineruns Instagram: runwithit_christineblanchette YouTube channel: Run With It Local Sports The challenge is making the time to exercise despite the busy days of shopping, putting up decorations, work and family commitments.Friday , December 7, 2018 Page 17 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind Five ?tness tips to keep you motivated through the holiday season Canada not the only country expected to have CHLers at world junior championship By Kyle Cicerella THE CANADIAN PRESS Maxim Cajkovic didn't know a thing about the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League when he left Europe for the 2018-19 season, never mind how the world junior championship is embraced in Canada. The annual tournament isn't viewed quite the same back home in Slovakia.``I hear people in Canada watch it more than the actual men's championship,'' said Cajkovic, a Saint John Sea Dogs forward from Bratislava.``I talked to my billet family and they told me they watch it every year, every game. And I see all the commercials here so I guess it's really, really big.'' Canada has invited 29 Canadian Hockey League skaters to selection camp next week, but it isn't the only country with CHL players at the event. The 17-year-old Cajkovic is one of many CHL import players that will be leaving his team and heading to camp in an effort to crack his national team's roster for the tournament that begins Boxing Day in Vancouver and Victoria, B.C.``It would mean almost everything to me,'' said Cajkovic, who went No.1 to Saint John in the 2018 CHL Import Draft.`The Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves will be losing a big part of their early-season success with Finnish goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen heading to the tournament for the second year in a row.He was Finland's starter in the 2018 edition in Buffalo and is looking for some redemption after his country was bounced in the quarterfinals by the Czech Republic and placed sixth.``Last year was a hard year for us but there's a lot of things to learn from,'' said the 19-year-old, who was taken No.3 in the CHL import draft.``There's no easy team in the tournament. You have to be ready for everyone.'' Luukkonen plans to have his parents and girlfriend make the flight over from Finland for the tournament, which is a big deal back home.``A couple real good years and hosting in Finland, it's a big thing,'' said Luukko- nen.``Of course it's hard for a lot to watch the games when we are in Vancouver but as hockey it's a big thing.'' Cajkovic has never played for Slovakia's under-20 squad but was dominant at the past U18s, where he finished second in tournament scoring behind American and top NHL prospect Jack Hughes, who's expected to be one of the stars at the world juniors.Cajkovic, a five-foot-11, 179-pound right-handed winger, has had a long road to the CHL, and is closing in on fulfilling his dream of playing in the world juniors after years of travelling around the world looking for the best competition. He moved away from home with his mom when he was 12 to the Czech Republic to pursue hockey at a higher level, and went on to play two years in Sweden prior to joining the Sea Dogs.He has spent the majority of his young career playing with players much older than him.``I always played with older kids, only season with my age group was the first year in Sweden.'' Players like Luukkonen have used the international spotlight in the past to gain the attention of NHL teams, leading to the Finnish netminder being taken 54th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 2017.Cajkovic is hoping to do something similar in 2019.``You see the rankings and people talking about it .it's pretty tough for my head to think about all that stuff.I try to stop and just focus on what I do with Saint John,'' said Cajkovic.``A lot of pressure, most pressure I've ever had on me.It's unbelievable how much pressure there is.'' The main reason he came to the CHL was because he was told it would help his chances of making it to the NHL.``I didn't know much, just that it was the junior NHL, best junior league in the world and I would compete with the best players for this age. That was pretty much it.I didn't know any teams,'' said Cajkovic.Just like Canada, which finds an extra gear when it plays the rival Americans, Cajkovic says that representing Slovakia is always extra special when he lines up across from the Czech Republic.``Czechs are really good and they think they are better than us and not nice to us, so we just want to beat them,'' said Cajkovic.?`Basically a rivalry.I don't think we have anyone else like that.'' Slovakia opens its tournament Dec.26 against the U.S.in Victoria, where all Group B games are being held.Canada starts against Denmark in Vancouver, the site of all Group A games.CHL players who are attending national team camps and could be participating in the world junior hockey championship include: Czech Republic: Goalie Jiri Patera (Brandon); Defencemen Filip Kral (Spokane), Radim Salda (Rimouski), Daniel Bukac (Niagara); Forwards Petr Cjaka (Erie), Jakub Lauko (Rouyn-No- randa), Matej Pekar (Barrie), Ostap Safin (Halifax), Krystof Hrabik (Tri-City).Denmark: Goalie Mads Sogaard (Medicine Hat); Forward Philip Schultz (Victoria).Finland: Goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukko- nen (Sudbury); Defencmen Anttalainen Aleksi (Blainville-Boisbriand), Thomson Lassi (Kelowna).Russia: Defenceman Dmitry Samorukov (Guelph), Alexander Alexeyev (Red Deer), Alexander Khovanov (Monc- ton); Forward Ivan Chekhovich (Baie- Comeau).Slovakia: North American skaters won't be confirmed until Dec.15.Sweden: Defenceman Adam Boqvist (London); Forwards Hugo Leufvenius (Sar- nia), Rickard Hugg (Kitchener).Switzerland: Defencemen Nico Gross (Oshawa), Simon Le Coultre (Moncton); Forwards Valentin Nussbaumer (Shawinigan), Nando Eggenberger (Oshawa), Philipp Kurashev (Quebec), Kyen Sopa (Niagara).USA: Goalie Kyle Keyser (Oshawa); De- fenceman Joey Keane (Barrie); Forwards Sasha Chmelevski (Ottawa), Cole Coskey (Saginaw), Jason Robertson (Niagara).(Americans are not considered import players in the CHL). Please remind your readers to take the time to become organ donors so that others might have the chance for a better life and your loved one, in a beautiful way, could live on.— Barry Dear Barry: I am so sorry for the loss of your son.It sounds as if he was a generous and kind person.Thank you for your perspective.A single organ donor may save the lives of up to eight people and improve the lives of up to 50, according to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
