By Mable Hastings In 1897, eight-year-old Virginia O’Han- lon wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun.Veteran newsman, Francis Pharcellus Church printed a quick response as an unsigned editorial on September 21, 1897 (Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus) and is has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial. In the light of Virginia O’Hanlon and with the childlike sense of belief and pride in my youth, I pen this message hoping that someone who can work magic, much like Francis Phar- cellus Church, might decide to help. Two years ago I was given the position of Executive Director of the Mis- sisquoi North Volunteer Centre (CABMN) in Potton (Mansonville) after working as the Youth Director for the CABMN for close to thirty five years. My one request in taking the job was that I could maintain some involvement in working with youth from Potton and surrounding areas as I had done for so many years. It was agreed. The goal of the youth programs in Potton is to build leaders one youth at a time.We aim to instil in every youth that each of them are dancers, actors, speakers, leaders and we emphasize self- esteem, respect for others and support for community while encouraging a strong sense of pride for the area from which they have been raised.Potton is a small township encompassing 5 towns with Mansonville being the largest and its service center. With some 1800 permanent residents, we are likely not the first stop listed on the itinerary of the famous BUT, I strongly believe that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to visit our community. Not only to meet our youth but to witness the volunteerism and involvement of our citizens who “make things happen here.” I know that when he campaigned, Mr.Trudeau visited the townships but I do not believe that Potton was a stop on his route. The Youth Centre in Mansonville would be proud to host a Prime Minister who professes to be all about empowering youth and recognizing the contribution of each young heart and mind. It’s not what the Prime Minister of Canada can do for Potton but what the youth of Potton can do for our Prime Minister. We have some of the most amazing young people in the country who have been, are being and who will be raised in Potton. We have one of the most beautiful areas to be seen with Lake Memphremagog, the Missisquoi River and Owl’s Head and the other mountains surrounding our villages. We are empowered by the adults who volunteer their time and make the community life happen.Building a youth centre, the Sunshine House for the intellectually and physically challenged, creating a Farmer’s Market, community garden, children’s garden, and a place with so many other projects coming to fruition….Connecting with a small group of youth who are being raised in a rural border town and hearing their words, sharing their stories, receiving their smiles and posing for photos with these beautiful youngsters will bring any human let alone a youth celebrating Prime Minister, the perfect boost to go back to Ottawa with faith that our Country is in good hands for many years to come.Meeting families and individuals who are serving as a model for the youth… So, to someone reading this letter who, like Francis Pharcellus Church, way back when, may be thinking, “hey, I can help make this happen,” get out your wand and get to work on a worthwhile miracle.Justin will thank you in the end, I promise.EDITORIAL Page 6 Monday , July 23 2018 His mishap opened the door wide open for Hamilton, who is 17 points clear of Vettel after trailing by eight beforehand. The British driver was fourth at the time of Vettel's sudden lapse, having started from 14th on the grid because of a hydraulic problem in qualifying.“You've always got to believe,'' said Hamilton, adding defiantly: “For those who don't know me, now you do.'' Bottas started and finished second, with Kimi Raikkonen taking third for Ferrari.Lance Stroll of Montreal did not finish after starting in 17th.Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was fourth for Red Bull, but teammate Daniel Ricciardo retired after rising from last on the grid to seventh.Vettel's incident led to a safety car coming out for several laps, prompting confusion at Mercedes.Hamilton was told to come into the pits, but ignored his mechanic screaming “In, in, in, in!'' at him.“They were all panicking in the pit wall,'' said Hamilton, who started to move into the pit lane before doubling back and landing himself in trouble with stewards.“It was the most confusing thing,'' Hamilton said, recounting his team's orders.“They were shouting 'No, (go) left! No, (go) right!'' When the race resumed, with about 10 laps left, Bottas almost overtook Hamilton.Shortly after, Bottas was firmly told on team radio to “hold position'' and not challenge Hamilton.“Taking positives as a team, perfect result for us,'' said Bottas, who added _ seemingly half-heartedly _ that he “understood'' the call.Ferrari made a call, too, at Raikko- nen's expense. With a little more than 20 of the 67 laps to go, he was leading Vettel, who complained of his tires overheating.Ferrari's senior performance engineer, Jock Clear, told Raikkonen not to hold up Vettel.Raikkonen replied: “I'm sorry but can you be direct? What do you want?'' After another indirect message, Raikkonen added “So you want me to let him (past)? Please.Just tell me.'' He eventually did, ending the Finnish driver's hopes of a first win since the sea- son-opening Australian GP in 2013.Asked about the instructions, Raikko- nen said “it wasn't clear, I had the speed.'' Hamilton's win moved him level with F1 great Michael Schumacher on four German GP wins Vettel had won once before in Germany _ at the Nuerburgring _ but has never won at Hockenheim. He grew up less than 30 minutes away, in Heppen- heim, and may never get a better chance amid doubts over future F1 races. The German GP turned the tables on Ferrari, which also conceded top spot to Mercedes in the constructors' championship.Things started well, though, with Vet- tel getting away cleanly and setting fastest laps Raikkonen was the first of the frontrunners to change tires, on Lap 15, coming out just ahead of Hamilton.Losing speed, Hamilton changed tires on lap 43.When he came back out, the heavy rain started falling.Raikkonen lost position to Bottas, and Vettel lost control of the title race.Vettel needs to bounce back strongly at the Hungarian GP next weekend, or Hamilton will take the momentum into the summer break. He inspired the young students who were fortunate enough to have him as a teacher encouraging curiosity, creativity and simply the pleasure of a good think. He is survived by his sister, Ellen Booth, his niece, Laura Russell, and her family, Andrew Cull, and their three girls, Georgia, Josie, and Bea; his nephew, Alec Frith, and step-nephew, Josiah Frith; his cousin, Mona Longpre, and the rest of the Magog family.Sail away, dear Sandy, with the wind at your back and thank you for all the wonderful stories we have to remember you by.Visitation will take place at the Windsor Funeral Home, 310 St-Georges Street, Windsor, Qc, on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 from 1:00-3:00 pm.WINDSOR FUNERAL HOME PHONE: 819-845-5229 310 St-Georges St., Windsor QC FAX: 819-849-1924 www.coopfuneraireestrie.com EMAIL: info@coopfuneraire.com ASK THE DOCTORS By Eve Glazier, M.D., and Elizabeth Ko, M.D.Dear Doctor: It seems as if people, without fail, say they feel better when the sun is shining, yet the medical community seems to tell people to stay away from the sun.The sun is shining as I ask: Is there some conspiracy here?Dear Reader: We wouldn’t say there’s a conspiracy afoot when it comes to advice regarding the sun and sunshine, but there certainly are plenty of inconsistencies. On one hand, there’s the indisputable link between exposure to the sun’s rays and a range of skin cancers. On the other hand, there are all of the ways that the availability of sunlight is tied not only to mood, but to metabolism as well. When taken together, the various warnings and admonitions about getting too much or too little sunlight and sunshine add up to a snarl of contradictions. On the “less sun” side of the equation are the physical changes that exposure to sunlight can cause to the skin.In the short-term, there’s tanning, which in our culture is associated with health and well-being.However, the physiological changes that cause the skin to get that sun-kissed glow are actually signaling that damage is taking place at a cellular level. Many of the signs of aging, including wrinkles, dark spots, splotches and sagging, are due to sun exposure.Ultraviolet light, a specific spectrum in the sun’s rays, damages fibers in the skin known as elastin. These are a key component in keeping your skin taut, flexible and youthful.Of even greater concern is the fact that sun exposure raises the risk of a variety of skin cancers, some of them aggressive and potentially fatal. But you’re right — sunlight is crucial to our emotional and physical well-being.Our circadian clocks, which oversee functions like sleep-wake cycles, mood, appetite, energy levels and hormone production, rely on the rhythms of the sun to stay in sync.Vitamin D, known as the “sunshine vitamin,” is manufactured by the body through a process that is triggered by sunlight on the skin.We know that you need vitamin D to build bone. But the fact that many of the tissues and organs in the body have vitamin D receptors suggests it’s important to other physiological functions as well.So what’s the sweet spot when it comes to getting enough sun, but not too much?If you’re not getting adequate vitamin D from supplements or fortified food, spend 15 to 30 minutes per day in direct sunlight. And because sunscreen has been found to block 90 percent of vitamin D production, leave your skin unprotected for that time.(But be sure to put on the sunscreen and cover up with long sleeves and a hat once the vitamin D time is over.) When it comes to mental well-being, years of research show that spending time outdoors is good for us.Sunlight plays a role, and so does the length of available daylight. We agree with you that it’s important to take the time each day to get out of the house or workplace and spend some time outside.Eve Glazier, M.D., MBA, is an internist and associate professor of medicine at UCLA unique to me.I am a senior in high school and an extremely modest girl.I have nightmares about being seen or treated by male doctors and nurses. My mother is insisting that I go to see her gynecologist, a young man. What she does not know is that a former boyfriend of hers sexually abused me several years ago.He died in a car wreck shortly after the abuse started, and his death devastated her so much that I decided it would do no good to upset her even more, so I never told her about what happened. Now all I seem to be reading in the news are stories of how a lot of high-profile male doctors and nurses are being charged with all kinds of sexual offenses, making my concerns that much worse. To add to the situation, the mom of one of my best girlfriends is dating a male nurse who works at the local hospital, and he has been telling my best friend’s mom all kinds of horror stories about how several of the male nurses he works with are so sexually perverted that it disturbs him.And he explains that they know how to hide it so no one knows anything is wrong while they get their kicks from examining and giving bed baths to their female patients. Some of the patients even delight in telling others about “how nice and thoughtful” the male nurses are.All of this leads me to ask: Unless they tell us or are caught, how do we know what a man is thinking in such medical settings? And how can I keep my mom from forcing me to do something I think would cause a lifetime of mental pain and torment for me?I don’t think I’m the only female with these feelings. Please try to answer this, as my mom reads your column.— Tormented and Distressed Dear Tormented and Distressed: I am so proud of you for having the courage to write about what happened.Your heart was very much in the right place when you refrained from upsetting your mother with what her boyfriend did to you.But now you have to clear the air — either by telling a therapist or by telling your mom everything that happened. You suffered a trauma with your mom’s boyfriend, so it makes sense that you would be concerned about other patients or even yourself having to endure the same type of ordeal. As for the mom of your friend, whose boyfriend is talking about the completely inappropriate behavior of his co-workers, tell your mom about this so that she can report it.I am so sorry that you had to go through the experience you had with your mom’s boyfriend, but if you can take that hurt and use it as fuel to save future patients from being victims of abuse, you should feel pretty good about yourself.I know you can do it.After hearing your story, I’m almost positive your mother will understand your not wanting a male nurse or doctor to touch you. Many women and girls only feel comfortable with female doctors. That is their choice, and it should be yours.Dear Annie: I am doing graduate work online for professional development in my field. The courses require a lot of reading. My manager approves of my course of study, but our organization’s policies do not allow eating lunch at the desk, because of the possibility of getting food in the computer keyboards.I bring my lunch to work rather than go to a restaurant, not only because of the cost but also because of food allergies.I need to use my lunch hour for reading my textbooks. The lunchroom is the only place where I can eat in the office. At lunch, the rest of the staff gathers in there, gossips and shares pictures and videos (think baby pictures and kitten videos).Because I do not want to seem rude by ignoring the gossip and kitten videos, I have been driving off-site at lunch, to a nearby shopping center parking lot, and eating lunch and studying in my parked car. However, that takes extra time.I would like to just be able to eat and read my textbook while the others are gossiping and sharing their pictures and videos. My co-workers know about my graduate work, and no one has put me down for it, but I am concerned that ignoring their gossip and kitten videos for a textbook in their presence might be construed as rude.So I ask you: Is it rude to study at noon in the office lunchroom?— Bookworm Dear Bookworm: Don’t worry your well-read head.Your co-workers all understand that you’re completing graduate work, and they should be supportive of your study habits. To prevent anyone from taking your focused reading the wrong way, offer a disclaimer, such as: “I promise I’m not trying to be rude by ignoring everyone.I just need to buckle down and get some work done. But please feel free to talk and hang out here as normal.” I would recommend using noise- canceling headphones and white-noise (or binaural beats) apps to help you get in the studying headspace no matter your physical space.Dear Annie: I am overwhelmed by my husband’s sister. We are in our mid-70s, and I have been in the family for 30 years. Not once have I ever been invited to her main home or vacation home (nor have I ever stepped foot in her homes), yet she has been in my home for lavish meals on countless occasions. She has also dined in restaurants with her husband and us at our expense. As children of the South, we were taught that when you accept an invitation in polite society, it is understood you then reciprocate. If you’re not willing to reciprocate, you shouldn’t accept the invitation. She has always been as well-off financially as my husband and I are.I am shocked at her continued feeling of entitlement. My husband thinks the way she treats me is OK.Why?I am very angry with both of them.— Child of the South Dear Child of the South: It sounds as if someone missed her lessons with Emily Post. It’s not just Southern hospitality that encourages people to be welcoming and thoughtful to guests. It is common decency, and your sister-in-law has worn through your hospitality. You should ask your husband what is going on.It makes no sense that all invitations go one way.Until you get to the bottom of it, you should hold off on inviting them back to your house.“Ask Me Anything: A Then, South should have rebid either three clubs (and passed North’s three-no-trump continuation) or quietly raised to three no-trump.Many pairs would treat four clubs as Gerber, asking for aces. The deal was played 15 times at Bridge Base Online.Only one pair reached three no-trump (by South after one diamond - two clubs - two hearts - three clubs - three spades - three no- trump), and West found the disastrous lead of the spade eight.Every other table was in five clubs.Nine made it, usually after West led the spade ace and continued with the spade eight.East won with the queen and thought the king was cashing. However, South ruffed, drew trumps and claimed.Four who went down could have succeeded. At the last table, my wife was West. She led the spade ace.Perhaps I should have played the king, but I actually followed with the four because we use upside-down signals. However, now, very carefully, my wife cashed the diamond ace! Then another spade beat the contract."]
