and the legacy of abuse associated with the Catholic Church. The economic boom brought to a traditionally staid and fixed society upward mobility, unprecedented wealth, and hand-over-fist materialism. Its collapse left a gaping hole in place of optimism, and a feeling of bitterness for those who had enjoyed riding the wave and those who had been swamped by it.As for the Catholic Church, the revelations of abuse have heightened the already strong discontent at the theocratic aspects of Irish society.Roddy Doyle’s Smile (2017) highlights the sense of desperation in this economic post-lapsarian Ireland, with a special focus on masculinity—how it can be defined and realized in this social context. As Doyle acknowledges in an interview, this novel is a departure from his usual fiction. There are still all the traditional Doylean rewards in crisp dialogue and a story well told, but the ambivalent and fragmentary narrative perspective and psychological complexity set Smile apart.Smile begins with the main character, Victor Forde, searching for a watering hole.He is in his mid-fifties and, apparently, has just separated from his wife and is starting over.We discover that he has moved into a tiny apartment, provided it with the barest of furnishings, and is scouting his old north Dublin neighbourhood for a “local”—a place where he can go out for a pint and read and have the odd conversation. We see that he is a stranger to this type of thing, having been married for some time to a very high-achiever and being thoroughly occupied with domestic and professional affairs. He finds a suitable place, Donnaly’s, and is just getting comfortably settled when he is accosted by a mysterious figure from his past, Edward.Eddie.no, Ed Fitzpatrick.Trouble is, he cannot for the life of him remember Ed.Ed alludes to shared school experiences with the (OMINOUS STRINGS) Christian Brothers, and refers to his sister Síla Fitzpatrick, who, in their youths, had been a real bike—the bike, as Ed puts it.In these opening scenes, then, Doyle sets the tone for the novel. The smooth, almost glib, dialogue keeps drawing the reader towards buried secrets, vague and fearful recollections of the past. The character Ed Fitzpatrick is introduced as a black blob against the light of the doorway. He gradually assumes colour—pink shirt; baggy cargo pants which, on account of their bagginess, are at times too revealing; fat stomach, which he slaps in most unsavoury fashion. And, as the story progresses, each time Victor Forde ventures from his apartment, Ed becomes more and more of an annoying and then menacing presence.Meanwhile, in a series of flashbacks, we are presented with Victor’s brilliant career—his early borderline abusive experiences at school with the Christian Brothers; the death of his father; his early successes as a UCD student, then as an iconoclastic, moving and shaking reviewer, journalist, and radio personality; his surprisingly passionate love affair with and then marriage to Rachel Carey, a high-achieving woman from a well-to- do family.Yet all is not well.He tries unsuccessfully to initiate a relationship with a woman he meets in his new local—no soap.He keeps trying to duck the attentions of the troublesome Ed Fitzpatrick— no soap. Finally he narrates a past radio interview in which he revealed some sordid details about schooling under the Christian Brothers. It is here that one senses the pressures of a psychological whirlpool. The reader is being drawn into something. The typically straightforward dialogue is undercut by narrative lapses. The realism seems to dissolve into a dreamscape.Stories like A Picture of Dorian Gray, Death in Venice, Fight Club come to mind. Some readers find the disjointed narration a bit off-putting, but it greatly adds to the effect of psychodrama (both psychotherapeutic and fictional!).In fact, this is probably the most Hitch- cockian of all of Doyle’s works. The author has always had a fascination with the spoken language, and has a great ability to evoke images and motives from very spare dialogue. And, in a sense we are set up by our own expectations derived from Doyle’s other works. But nothing in our previous reading of Doyle prepares us for the unsettling final chapters of Smile.—Stephen Sheeran There are several books by Roddy Doyle at the Lennoxville Library.Smile is on order.Don’t miss our Earth Day children’s activity this Saturday, or our DVD promotion of films about writers and writing in honour of International Book Day.Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , April 20, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Weather TODAY: FLURRIES HIGH 5 LOW -4 SATURDAY: SUNNY HIGH 7 LOW -6 SUNDAY: SUNNY HIGH 9 LOW -4 MONDAY: SUNNY HIGH 13 LOW 0 TUESDAY: SUNNY HIGH 19 LOW 2 The Record e-edition There for you 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week.Wherever you are.Access the full edition of the Sherbrooke Record as well as special editions and 30 days of archives.Renew or order a new 12- month print subscription and get a 12-month online subscription for an additional $5 or purchase the online edition only for $82.21.Record subscription rates (includes Quebec taxes) 1 year print: $155.91 6 month print: $81.85 3 month print: $41.57 12 month web only: $82.21 1 month web only: $7.46 Web subscribers have access to the daily Record as well as archives and special editions.Subscribing is as easy as 1,2,3: 1.Visit the Record website: www.sherbrookerecord.com 2.Click e-edition.3.Complete the form and wait for an email activating your online subscription.GO O D RE A D S Lennoxville library To ?ght or not to ?ght? And with quill, or with club? Record Staff SHERBROOKE A28-year old Sherbrooke man, Samuel Fabi, was convicted Wednesday of charges related to child pornography in a Sherbrooke court.Samuel Fabi was convicted of producing child pornography between August 23, 2014 and March 5, 2016 and possession of child pornography between July 1, 2014 and August 5, 2016.These convictions will mean Fabi will have to serve time, as the minimum sentence in such cases is set at one year of detention.Transcripts of Skype conversations were entered as evidence to support the charge of producing child pornography. These sexually suggestive communications between Fabi and his victims are considered child pornography.Witness statements were also admitted into evidence, as were Fabi’s own statements to police. In addition, child pornography files were found in Fabi's computer and on a USB key were also submitted as evidence.Fabi admitted that the statement he gave to police came freely and voluntarily and, through his lawyer, offered no defense. Some charges against Fabi were dropped in a deal that saw Fabi drop the threat of a constitutional objection to the admittance of some of the evidence. The Crown had pledged to take a strong stand in cases of computer luring of minors as well as distributing and accessing child pornography when court returned on September 11.Page 4 Friday , April 20, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Sherbrooke man admits to child porn charges Organ and Tissue Donation: CIUSSS says ‘Talk to Your Family’ Record Staff SHERBROOKE The CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS is encouraging the public to discuss the idea of organ and tissue donation with their families before a crisis strikes.Failing to do so can result in potential donations being withheld because loved ones are unaware of the wishes of the deceased.About 90 per cent of Quebecers support organ and tissue donation, but only 4 out of 10 have formalized their decision with the Quebec Health Insurance Board (RAMQ) or the Quebec Chambre des notaires registry. The subject of organ and tissue donation is rarely discussed between potential donors and their families."One of the reasons for a family's refusal to donate organs and tissue from their deceased loved one is that they are unaware of last wishes.Last year, in the Estrie region, 63 per cent of families justified their refusal in this way,” says Organ Donation Resource Nurse Annie Chouinard, who works for the CIUSSS of Estrie – CHUS Benoit Lefebvre, the father of a young donor, confirmed: "We must think about this before the situation arises. When it happens, on the spot, it is much too difficult. We experience so much emotion.” Although a person may decide before dying to donate organs and tissues, care teams still want the consent of the family, as it is they who ultimately have the final word."On our side, we look in the records and on the health insurance card to know the person’s wishes and talk with the family,” Chouinard said.” But sometimes, there is nothing there.People must make a choice if unaware of their loved one’s desires. With all the emotions involved, it's harder for the family, much harder.” When a person has taken a position on organ and tissue donation before death and has discussed their choice with their loved ones, it makes the decision for the family much easier. This was the case for Martine Ouellet, whose 21- year-old son died after his car collided with a truck. The event happened 14 years ago, but the pain is still very much alive.Ouellet remembers the death of her son, taken in the prime of his life: "Hugo was hit hard in the head and had severe head trauma and a lot of bleeding,” she recalled.”We went to the hospital where we met a team that really took good care of us.A few days later, we were told that Hugo was not going to make it, that we were going to lose him.His organs were about to stop working. My partner and I thought that if we loved him, we had to let him go." In the end, Hugo could not donate his organs because he did not meet all the criteria. But he was able to donate tissue, bequeathing his corneas.A few weeks later, Martine had confirmation that the transplants were successful. Thanks to Hugo's gesture, two people found a new quality of life. When thinking of this, his mom is filled with pride for her son.Three ways to signify consent 1.Sign the sticker and affix it to the back of your health insurance card.2.Sign the Consent for Organ and Tissue Donation form from the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).3.Register your consent with the Quebec Registry of Consents for Organ and Tissue Donation.Above all, share your wishes with your loved ones! recognizes the contributions of organizations that have developed innovative strategies and methods to mentor and support volunteers and to promote volunteerism."This award recognizes all the efforts we have made in recent years to promote volunteerism and raise awareness of its importance," explained CAB Chair Michèle Hamelin.Since 1987, the Coaticook MRC’s Volunteer Center has launched some interesting initiatives to highlight the work of volunteers in the region, including the Volunteer Action Campaign that features a community activist every week. This is done publicly through newspaper columns, on radio, on Facebook, and in other social media.During National Volunteer Week, all the texts are presented during the regional recognition dinner. These pieces also demystify volunteerism and encourage others to take part.In addition, in order to stimulate youth succession, the CAB organized the "I really live, I volunteer" contest, illustrating the volunteer activities of a youth group from the MRC in a video. It also introduced an institutional volunteer component for various activities. In this Volunteer Week and this year when Coaticook CAB is celebrating its 30th anniversary, the award honours its 148 active volunteers who have accomplished nearly 12,500 volunteer hours during the year.2017-2018.Marjorie Tyroler, Director General of the Coaticook Volunteer funding of health and social services,” Fortin said “this is a debate that has been going on for more than twenty years and today we are putting an end to it.” Fortin explained that a funding formula put in place 30 years ago that was only ever indexed for inflation and did- n’t take into account population changes over that time left several regions of the province at a financial disadvantage when it came to health and social services. This past March, as a solution to that problem, a sum of $300 million was set aside to improve service and access across these underfunded regions. That overall amount was then divided between regions based on a formula that takes into account population, service needs, and regional characteristics like population age and known health concerns. For Gauthier, the funding comes as very good news in a region that has more seniors, more poverty, and more mental health concerns than the provincial average.“This will allow the stabilization of personnel,” the General Manager said, making reference to the issue of absenteeism that has arisen at local healthcare centres as a result of intense demands on staff.By using the new, recurrent funding to help support staffing needs, Gauthier said that the public can expect to see a more efficient and functional environment in all the facilities of the CIUSSS de L’Estrie – CHUS shortly.“The Estrie is coming out a winner,” Gauthier said. The other areas benefiting from the new funding are the Mauricie-Centre-du- Quebec, Outaouais, Chaudière-Ap- palaches, Laval, Lanaudi?re, Laurentians, and Montérégie regions.Diane Gingras, Vice President of the Board of DIrectors of the CIUSSS de L’Estrie – CHUS with Luc Fortin, MNA Townships healthcare centres Stanstead Township to appeal a court ruling favouring a local property owner By Matthew McCully In a judgment rendered on March 13, Superior Court Judge Sylvain Provencher ruled in favour of real estate development company 9270-5912 QUÉBEC INC (Domaine Memphrémagog sur le lac) in a case against Stanstead Township. The developer took action against the municipality for having refused to authorise the construction of a pathway built on stilts along Lake Memphrema- gog in Fitch Bay.The path, measuring 1870 linear feet, was built before any authorisation had been granted. The municipality is appealing the decision. The property, a 122-acre lot, was purchased by the real estate company in December of 2012.Because access to a portion of the lakefront property flooded at certain times of year and was extremely humid and difficult to walk on, it was determined by the owner that a path on stilts needed to be built to access the lake. The owner then approached the Stanstead Township Municipal inspector to apply for the proper permits for construction of the path, but was told that the project required the approval of the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change (MDDELCC).In February of 2013, the property owner filed the application, but in the months following began construction without having received the proper authorisation. While in hot water with the MD- DELCC, it was discovered in August that based on the type of construction project, the jurisdiction fell under the municipality and not the Ministry of Environment. The property owner,9270-5912 QUÉBEC INC (Domaine Memphrémagog sur le lac), then turned to the town for the proper permits, but was refused.According to the details explained in the judgment, the property owner asserted that the path that was built conformed to the municipality’s regulations.Even if it did not, the owner claimed to have an acquired right to build the path, since previously a walking path was already in the same place. The legal challenge mounted was to oblige Stanstead Township to provide the developer with permits authorising the path that was built, as well as $500,000 in damages and $50,000 in punitive damages. While the civil aspects were not addressed in the recent ruling, the judge declared the path to be inconformity with Stanstead Township’s existing bylaws, and gave the municipality 30 days to provide the property owner with the appropriate certificates of authorisation for the path. The judge included an amendment preventing the municipality from forcing the property owner to remove the path.Stanstead Township Mayor could not discuss the specific details surrounding the case, but confirmed that the municipality intends to appeal the decision.Despite the recent ruling in the legal challenge against Stanstead Township, Domaine Memphrémagog-sur-le-lac real estate company still has to answer to the Ministry of Environment. For contravening section 22 of the Environment Quality Act, the company received fines in February totaling over $65,000 for having carried out work in a swamp, a marsh, a bog, and on the shoreline of Lake Memphremagog without first obtaining a certificate of authorization from the Ministry of the Environment. DEAR EDITOR; As a volunteer / participant by asking questions and making comments at Council of Commissioners' meetings for the past twenty years, permit me to respond to The Record letter published , on April 18, by school-board businessman Marcus Tabachnick: "School Board Elections - Community Engagement." There is no one in Quebec who is more knowledgeable about the English public education system than Mr.Tabachnick.For several years he was both chairman of the Lester B.Pearson School Board and president of the Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA).Moreover, consider as QESBA's Executive Director, for about three years, when it was announced on April 21, 2017 that he was leaving the Association he founded, he was praised and criticized. He was praised by the QESBA and school board commissioners for leading the way in taking down school board reform Bill 86, which called for the scrapping of school board elections in favour of giving schools greater decision-mak- ing power. He was criticized for refusing, in writing, to divulge the financial records of the QESBA.There is no evidence anywhere that his tenure at the QESBA was of any value to our English-speaking students nor the community.Think about the lack of English textbooks for students writing matriculation exams, and the access to English schools matter.Despite Tabachnick’s focus on school boards, the most urgent issue facing English education today is declining enrollment. It is the school not the school board that is central to the vitality of the community.Mr.Tabachnick is fully justified in writing: "Some of the English school boards have suffered through several years of political unrest, turmoil internally, disruptive squabbles with employees , the public and the media. There seems to be a lack of clear, coherent leadership." Consequently, Tabachnick claims the English school system needs "fresh blood" for the upcoming school board elections. No, it doesn't.The English community needs to consider these facts: Presently, as the QESBA is developing a 'Strategic Plan' to justify its existence, there are three Quebec political parties calling for the ditching / revamping of the anachronistic elected public school system: Conservative, Green and the Coalition Avenir Quebec, led by former Education Minister François Legault. The Quebec Liberal Party, which prides itself on its ethics policy should take a close look at the QESBA, which has no ethics policy. Then, seriously reconsider the future of the elected school board system by adopting something similar to the CAQ education platform or with some tweaking, its original Liberal Bill 86.CHRIS EUSTACE MONTREAL, PQ DEAR EDITOR, Ireceived my Record today, Tuesday, April 17 and as usual settled down to the pleasure of reading it.At first, I admired the thickness of the paper as it has become very thin the past little while. The section on Keeping our community safe slipped out and that became the priority of reading.I read with enjoyment as one fire department after another was mentioned and the work of the first responders and firemen was disclosed. What a tribute to such fine people who work so hard to keep our communities safe.Something just didn’t seem right by the time I closed that section so I went back to the first page and started in again.Looking and wondering what I had missed. The third time through it finally hit me.What about the firemen and first responders in Stanstead County?I saw Stanstead with Fire Chief Goodsell. But where is our Fire Chief Brian Wharry in Stanstead County?Looking back through the section, I believe that you have mentioned every Fire Station in southern Quebec except for Stanstead County.I don’t know who was in charge of submitting information to the Record or who did the research on the Fire Departments but I was very disappointed that the Fire department in Stanstead County did not receive a worthy mention.Having called the Fire Department this winter when my smoke detectors went off around five thirty in the morning, I can tell you first hand that those first re- sponders and firefighters are worthy of every bit respect and value and I for one thank them very much for their service.SINCERELY, ELAINE LARAWAY GEORGEVILLE ,QUE EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , April 20, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record I read with enjoyment as one fire department after another was mentioned and the work of the first responders and firemen was disclosed. What a tribute to such fine people who work so hard to keep our communities safe.DEAR EDITOR; Congrats to The Record for publishing Wednesday’s supplement on firefighters and first responders.Lots of pages filled with new and old stories and photos from around the greater Eastern Townships.I have had the privilege to know almost all of the fire chiefs in the articles.and am old enough to have been able to name the majority of the Lennoxville firefighters from the 1960s.because most of them were still there when I joined the LFD in 1973! I have a feeling that after seeing this, you could probably do another special section to include all of the towns or departments that didn’t submit anything this time! Unfortunately, school boards will be maintained as artificial vessels as the Ministry must have an intermediate administrative layer so as to directly control community schools without overtly appearing to do so.However, Anglophone citizens have long recognized that these sham structures do not impact meaningful educational elements but are simply ethereal organizations filled with smoke and mirrors! JON BRADLEY BEACONSFIELD, Let us try to hold these two images together, both the grand and the small, and let us be filled with gratitude.COLUMNIST Friday , April 20, 2018 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com One column, four voices Opening to the Spirit Today's Word: Earth By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) This coming Sunday is Earth Day.We will continue our recent tradition of ringing the church bell, this year 400 times, as both a celebration of the earth and a call to action.I never have a problem getting volunteers to help.Coincidentally on Sunday we will also celebrate the birth of a child in a baptism ceremony.I was holding the little baby last night while visiting the parents to plan the service, and this made me think: What kind of planet are we leaving to our children?I have fond memories of growing up in the country, splashing in brooks, walking barefoot, making tree houses, building a raft for our pond, and spending most of the summer outdoors enjoying nature. My skin got a bit red at first, but then I tanned quickly and never had to worry about sunscreen.I could drink water from the brook behind the house and eat carrots from the garden and strawberries from the field.I certainly never worried if there would a healthy planet for my grandchildren.Yet here in 2018 we face global warming, thousands of people across the land have no drinkable water, oceans are rising and polar ice is melting. Our plastic garbage is filling up landfills and polluting the ocean.“Called by earth and sky, promise of hope held high, this is our sacred living trust, treasure of life sanctified, called by earth and sky”.We will be singing these words in our service on Sunday. The lyrics go on to talk about how precious the earth, water and sky are.We have been given a beautiful earth to live on and care for.Let's all do our part so that every new baby can laugh and play and enjoy our precious plant long into the future.2) Two images come to mind. One is our beautiful blue earth from a distance. The white clouds swirl around the perfect roundness of ocean and land.It is at once majestic and humbling. We are so beautiful from a distance. The second image is a bit of earth in the hand.A clump of dark soil, cool and moist, trickles back to the ground from between my fingers. Both of these are earth.Earth is our home and earth is what gives us life. All of our food comes from the earth.Gardeners know all about the feel of soil in their hands. There is little that comes close to the satisfaction of harvesting food that you have grown – picking a tomato warmed by the sun or gathering lettuce that is wet with rain.Let us try to hold these two images together, both the grand and the small, and let us be filled with gratitude.3) As Earth Day approaches it seems fitting to reflect on our changing attitude to this planet we inhabit. As I was growing up we never questioned the quality of our air or water or how much garbage we generated. It was common practice to drop our candy wrappers, cigarette butts and used gum on the street or out the travelling car window. We embraced wholeheartedly all the convenience of “use once and throw it away” products. It seemed the earth could supply us with an unending quantity of natural resources we could use any way we pleased. The sustainability of our planet was taken for granted. Our ignorance was bliss! Earth itself is teaching us the error of our ways. The same science lauded for showing us how to extract and refine earth’s resources is also telling us we have gone too far.We have crossed the point at which earth can rejuvenate itself at a pace that sustains life as we know it.It's time to make hard choices.Jobs, the economy, our ability to pay for social services we expect are reasons used to keep doing what we've done for so long – produce, sell and consume as much as we possibly can.Economic costs of our current system are not the only factors to consider. How do we evaluate the moral costs to a society so short-sighted it is willing to sacrifice future generations' well-being for the short term convenience of cheap oil, plastic and a new mobile phone every three years? What will our great grandchildren say about us when environmentally induced sterility is commonplace and our rivers and lakes can no longer be enjoyed by swimmers, fishermen or kayakers?Currently no big money interests will benefit from the drastic changes needed to make human life on this planet sustainable, only the voiceless interests of future generations.“If we could still claim ignorance of the damage we have done, we could not be held to account. Now that our eyes have been opened, we must all carry the blame for our inaction.” (John 9: 41, paraphrased) We are past the time individual recycling will turn the tide.Only by raising our voices against economic interests that keep us locked into current patterns can we hope to turn this situation around. This coming Sunday consider how you might contribute to being part of the solution.4) A mere decades ago humanity first stepped off the surface to view from space this spinning blue marble we call home. We've only begun to realize we do not live on the earth but within it.At birth we emerged, individual cells in a living organism, as physicist James Lovelock called it, in a body called earth that functions as a whole. We are like fleas, Lovelock said in his 1970s film The Gaia Hyposesis, who jumped off the elephant's back to view it from a new perspective and ask, "Could it be that the elephant is a living, breathing being?" Our notion of earth and the relatedness of everything continues to change.Sallie McFague called the earth God's body."Ground of our being" was Tillich's name for the holy.Only within the context of earth do we experience the divine creative energy that brought forth the universe.Every insect and plant, every rock and mineral, drop of water and breath of air and all living beings is infused with it.Including us, who struggle to admit it and respect each other and the rest of the earth community. We've only begun to see the earth itself as holy, deserving of our infinite gratitude and reverence.Dreamers coming awake now, however slowly, we wake from a deep and beautiful delusion that dates back to the very beginning, when first we began to question our place and purpose. So many origin myths assigned humans a position at the top of the pyramid of beings and claimed for us dominion over all below. Not so, we now know.If we continue to trash the planet, we may ourselves end up at the bottom of the heap. We're beginning to grasp the harm we've done, to the whole earth community and ourselves within its context.Everyday should be Earth Day.The words of a haunting native chant ring through my ears as a prayer: "Every part of the earth be to my people holy." Repeat, repeat, repeat.May it be so! One word, four voices - now it's your turn: What comes to your mind when you hear the word "Earth"?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dil- labough is now Rector of St.Paul's in Brockville ON.She continues to write for this column as a dedicated colleague with the Eastern Townships clergy writing team; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco is Consulting Minister to UU Estrie-Unitarian Universalists in North Hatley.Ottawa and Quebec reach agreements to ease tensions over asylum seekers The Canadian Press Rising tensions between Quebec and the federal government were eased Wednesday night after new agreements were struck aimed at helping the province deal with an ongoing surge in asylum seekers crossing the Canada-U.S.border.Following a meeting in Ottawa of the ad hoc intergovernmental task force on irregular migration, politicians emerged with new measures to address the growing pressures in Quebec.A working group was struck to look at the costs Quebec says it has borne as a result of a spike in irregular migration that began last summer and is expected to surge again this summer.A triage system will also be set up to ask asylum seekers arriving in Quebec where in Canada they ultimately hope to stay.Quebec Immigration Minister David Heurtel said he was pleased to hear Ottawa finally taking some action on the concerns he has been raising and also recognizing that his province has shouldered a significant burden due to irregular migration.Transport Minister Marc Garneau, who chairs the task force, said he was also able to offer Quebec assurances that $74 million has been earmarked to reduce extensive backlogs that now exist for migrants to have their refugee claims processed. Page 8 Friday , April 20, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Governor General calls Southwest Airline pilot a hero for showing nerves of steel By Ross Marowits THE CANADIAN PRESS Gov.Gen.Julie Payette says a Southwest Airlines pilot who landed her plane safely after a mid-air engine mishap is rightfully being called a hero.Payette told aviation officials Thursday that Capt.Tammie Jo Shults showed nerves of steel as she deployed years of training as a U.S.Navy fighter pilot to avoid greater injury. One person was killed and seven others were injured after the twin-engine Boeing 737 blew an engine at 30,000 feet Tuesday and got hit by shrapnel that smashed a window.Media reports following the incident have drawn attention to the fact that Shults is a woman pilot, in an industry still heavily dominated by men.But Payette asked why anyone would be surprised that a woman who is extraordinarily well-trained could excel in the face of danger. Some industry observers say Shults will become a role model for women and prompt more to consider careers in aviation.Alexandre de Juniac, director general of the International Air Transport Association, said at a Montreal luncheon that more needs to be done to address the severe underrepresentation of women in the industry. The airline association is taking a small step in a few weeks with the appointment of its first female board member.IATA says the percentage of female aviation executives lags other industries.Just three per cent of aviation CEOs were women last year, compared with 12 per cent in other sectors.By contrast, about one-third of human resources directors are women, compared with 23 per cent in other industries.Men dominate senior aviation executive roles around the world but women have a larger share of positions _ about 15 per cent _ in Europe and North America.Magog, Orford Music reach collaboration deal Record Staff The City of Magog has entered into a three-year agreement with herself who lifted twice her body weight over her head at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The businesswoman, weightlifting coach and mother of three children will be crowned Olympic champion years later. The women ahead of her stripped of gold and silver months ago for doping violations, the International Olympic Committee has confirmed the medal redistribution of the women's 63-kilogram class and Girard's promotion from bronze to gold.“It feels like it's been so long,” Girard told The Canadian Press on Thursday.“I look at videos and pictures that pop up on my Facebook and it really feels like it was another life.” Girard will receive not only her gold medal from 2012, but also a belated bronze from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, at a ceremony to be organized by the Canadian Olympic Committee at a later date.“Yes, it's overdue, but the message of my medals is now so much stronger,” she said.“I want that moment to be not just for me.I want it for us.It's a huge win for our country and for clean sport.” Girard is Canada's first Olympic champion in weightlifting and the first Canadian to win a pair of medals in the sport.“She is a weightlifting trailblazer in so many ways and we are extremely proud of her,” COC president Tricia Smith said in a statement.“Christine has always lived the values of sport and of competing clean. We are so pleased to see her finally receive the Olympic gold medal which she has so rightfully earned.” Girard, 33, was born in Elliot Lake, Ont., but grew up in Rouyn-Noranda, Que.She and husband Walter Bailey moved to White Rock, B.C., in 2009.They co- founded the Kilophile Weightlifting Club in Surrey, B.C., in 2012.Girard gave birth to their third child _ a son _ in March. The family is moving to Aylmer, Que., in June for Bailey's job in Ottawa with the RCMP.The medals _ when Girard gets them _ will feel like a bridge back to the woman who grimaced with determination as she hoisted 133 kilograms off the mat at the ExCel exhibition centre in London.“It does feel a bit funny to know that Christina that was in another life will actually get the medals too,” Girard said.More than 1,500 samples from Beijing and London were re-tested in 2016.A total of 65 sanctions involving 40 medals were imposed from the Beijing Games, and 45 sanctions impacted 20 medals in London, according to the IOC.Olympic weightlifting medals are determined by the sum of each lifter's best result in the snatch and the clean and jerk, with three attempts allowed in each.Girard's winning total was 236 kilograms.Kazakhstan's Maiya Maneza and Russia's Svetlana Tzarukaeva were disqualified for testing positive for steroids, according to the IOC.Girard was also bumped up to bronze in 2008 when silver medallist Irina Nekrassova of Kazakhstan also failed a re-test.Girard can't help but wonder 'what if?' “My years between 2008 and 2012 were the hardest years of my life,” she said.“I was training in a (garage) that was barely heated.I had so many things getting in the way of my medal and my dream of being on the podium.“If I had come back with a bronze medal in 2008, I think I would have had a lot more support and a lot more financial support that would have definitely changed those four years of my life.“That being said, those four years allowed me to get on the podium and made the person I am now.I have no regrets, but definitely my life would have been different in a lot of ways.” Girard also hopes her gold and bronze will help rehabilitate her sport's image.Bulgaria and Russia were banned from weightlifting at the 2016 Olympic Games for doping offences.“In my sport, there's a lot of clean countries,” Girard said.“I think we know who we are and I had a message from Australia saying 'Hey, you have no idea what this means for us.' “I think it's really meaningful to a lot of countries, not just for ours, within our sport.I hope that will help clean the name of my sport.” Local Sports Are your eyes ‘performance ready’?It’s never too late to have an eye exam.Friday , April 20, solution in sight (pun intended). From a sunset walk along the beach, to having coffee with friends, to getting away for the weekend, there is much in life we take for granted. You end up foregoing it all if you are battling a constant irritation of your eyes. You may learn to cope, however, without regular eye exams which detect the onset of disease, as well as making you aware of the best eye care I’m not sure whether there is any advice you can give me, but here goes.I am a 23-year- old gay man.I have been living with my 56-year-old boyfriend, “Bob,” for the past four years.I love Bob but am no longer in love with him.I would like to move out but don’t make very much money and can’t afford it.I can’t move back with either parent. My brother (who is in a real mess) lives with my mom, and my dad pretty much disowned me when I started seeing Bob.I’ve grown accustomed to the lifestyle I have with Bob.We go out to dinner often and on many exotic cruises and vacations.I’m not ready to give those up.As I said, I love Bob but am not super happy. What should I do?— Spoiled Dear Spoiled: It’s not fair to continue using this man as a meal ticket (and plane ticket and cruise ticket).Everyone deserves to be with someone who really wants to be with him, and you’re denying Bob that opportunity.Breakups are rarely convenient, but people find ways to survive.See whether you can stay with a friend for a few weeks while you set aside enough money for renting your own room. You’re 23 years old; you should be working toward financial independence, not setting yourself up for a lifetime of relying on others.Show respect for yourself, for Bob and for the good times you shared by ending things, pronto.Dear Annie: I disagree with your advice to “Stuck in Santa Fe.” You said she and her boyfriend should put their plans on hold while they await news of an uncertain job transfer, which may come many months down the road. The best advice anyone ever gave me as a young man was to assume that nothing will ever change. This is not to say you should ignore the future or never plan for change. It simply means you should not put your life on hold waiting for things that may never happen. That Santa Fe couple should live in the present, look for that better apartment and continue planning their life together now.But at the same time, they should keep looking for that next opportunity and be prepared to manage that change when it actually arrives. If they follow my advice and the boyfriend gets the job of his dreams, they may have to lose one month’s worth of rent. But even if that happens, they will at least have been in a better apartment and building their lives. And who knows? An even better opportunity may yet take them in another direction. So my advice: Always have plans for the future and work toward them, but live your life in the present.— Fatherly Advice Dear Fatherly Advice: I hear you. When patience becomes indolence, it’s no longer a virtue. To plan for the future but live in the present is excellent advice, so I’m glad to be printing your letter.Dear Annie: I am writing to you looking for help with substance abuse.I would like to find a natural way of releasing myself totally from this disease, as well as from crushing grief I’m experiencing from loss.I recently lost my kids’ father.I have taken it really hard, to the point that I lost myself.A part of me has so many regrets from all the wrong I did in my relationship because of my substance abuse. He thought I was against him, and I completely wasn’t.I was stuck in an addiction.I spoke negatively of him to some mutual friends, but that was because of my addiction, my selfishness and my need for instant gratification and validation.I regret that.Since he passed away, I’ve truly lost the ability to look forward most days.My heart is so heavy with the pain I caused him with my substance abuse, lies and unfaithfulness.I would really appreciate it if you could refer me to someone for help in dealing with grief and finding a way to mend the past and accept that he’s dead and in a better place so I can move on and hopefully have a future.I don’t want to see myself sitting in this same place next year.I want to see myself reaching up and building my self-esteem, self-confidence, self- worth.I want to actually believe that I am somebody and deserve to find a better place in society and, more importantly, a better place within myself.— Lost Dear Lost: Hitting rock bottom is painful. But it’s also powerful. As cliched as it sounds, it’s true: There’s nowhere to go but up.I strongly encourage you to see a therapist. If that’s not feasible for you at this point, please consider attending a 12-step program, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, where you might find peace in surrender and strength in solidarity. You can also call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s 24/7 National Helpline, at 800-662-4357, for referral to resources and treatment available in your state.I’m so sorry for your loss.Dear Annie: You didn’t give any specifics to “Crowded Canal,” the woman who wasn’t sure how to get friends to stop using her house essentially like a free vacation rental.I totally understand “Crowded Canal’s” difficulty with saying a simple “no.” Perhaps she could tell her self-inviters: “We are worn-out from having so much company lately. It seems everyone is asking to visit, and I’m having trouble keeping up with all the cooking and cleaning.I’d be happy to meet you out for dinner if you come to town, because I would love to see you and could use a meal out for a change.” Maybe they’d get the hint and see themselves in the mirror.— Robin Dear Robin: In an ideal world, one shouldn’t feel compelled to provide explanations for having boundaries. There’s really nothing wrong with simply saying “no.” But we don’t live in an ideal world, and the line you suggested is a good compromise.Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com.Page 20 Friday , April 20, 2018 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Used to the lifestyle Dear In today’s deal, South should be happy with nine tricks. What ought he to do after West leads the heart nine? Not many pairs would end in three no-trump, but five of either minor ought to fail.In this auction, South ignored his diamond suit. Then, when North showed that suit, South temporized with three hearts, suggesting that he needed some help in that suit for no- trump.North, with good hearts and the spade void, bid three no-trump; and South was happy to pass.Declarer began with six top tricks: two spades, three hearts and one club. There were four more winners available in clubs, but communications were iffy.If South had immediately played the club ace and another club, West would have taken that trick and led another heart to strand declarer in the dummy and leave him with only eight tricks. So, South carefully cashed the spade ace first, getting his ninth trick in the bank. Then he played the ace and another club. But if he had greedily cashed both top spades, he would have lost one club, two diamonds and three spades.
