Montreal weekly witness commercial review and family news paper
Fortement imprégné de sa mission chrétienne et défenseur du libéralisme économique, The Montreal Witness (1845-1938) est demeuré une entreprise familiale durant toute son existence. [...]

The Montreal Witness a connu différentes éditions (hebdomadaire, bihebdomadaire, trihebdomadaire) et plusieurs noms.

Lord Melbourne's time.‘The leaders of an immense crowd pressated themselves at the door of the Home OfBcs with a petition, but Lond Melbourne declined to receive it, and informed them that be would hold them re sponsible for any disorder that might en ane.‘This cool message frightened the leaders, who begged that they might get off by s back door, =o that their followers might not Government should regard it as 8 mistake to drive these people into hostility may be found iu the following facts. The Miri- dites ave à sept vf Catholic Christian subjects of the Porte in Albania. They beloag to the Guegh branch of the Aibanian race, and are on much better terms usually with the Mahometan Gueghs than with their Montenegrin neighbors of the Greek Church, or with the Tusk Albanians of any creed, They are reputed the fiercest and best fighting men among the Christian subjects of the Porte, and it will interest all readers of Fitzgreen Halleck to know that the conflict in which Marco Bowaris lost bia life was a night attack of the Sulivtes, who were Tusk Albanians, upon à camp vf the Miridites in 1523.Mr.Halleck's version of the affair in not abaolutely historical in ita accuracy, and does rather more than justice to the Greeks in con- pection with it.The vanguar) of the army of Mustai Pasha which moved down from Albania in 1923 upon Greece proper was com posed of Catholic Miridites and Mahometan Gueghs under the command of Djelaleddin, Bey of (Ichrids, Marco Bozzaris and bis three huudred and fifty Suliotes surprised their camp and might have routed them utterly had the Greek armatoli of Ætolia and Acarnanis, who lay où the surrounding beights and watched the flashing of the Suliote guns, come down to help those brave partisans. But the Greek jealousy of the Suliotes kept them inactive, and Bozzaris threw his gallant life away practically for nothing, 60 far as the immediate consequences of the sacrifice wore concerned. The Porte, it will be seen, in quite right in regarding any disturbance of the loyalty of the Miriditos as a sad blunder at this moment when their help might be so important against the Russians of the Greek Church and the Monteaegrins, whom they hate with an equal hatred War Hs Bees Dectarep, and the Russian forces, tn the number of one bundred thousand, it in said, have begun the attack. The Czar's Manifesto, which was immed Tuesday, states that Russia Las all along been striving for pence, bat uwing to Turkey's stubborn refusal to make any attempt to execute reforme, has been forced to declare war single banded, and invoking the blessing of God upon Lis valiant armies, the Czar gives them the order to cross the Turkish frontier. It is supposed that Buseo, in Moldavie, will be the Russian hemiquarters after crossing the Pruth, in which respect the strategy of the opening campaign is sail to resemble that of 1853, when the same point was selected.Great changes will be made in order to turn the Rou- manian railway to aocount, this road with its connecting lines establishing direct communication between Odessa, Rischeneff, Jassy and Guergo, an important point on tbe Danube, facing Silistria, whence runs the main rosd to Shumla, one of the keys to Constantinople. With thess railway facilities at command Kussia will be compelled, both on military and political grounds, to avoid the tardy movements made in the late war.The cocupation of Roumania then wae a formidable threat, but new it may be com- sidered but little better than Russian terri tory nominally owing mbmission to the Porte. In June, 1853, the Rumians entered that pro- vinos, aud supposing Turkey would immediately yield, delayed active operations until January, 1854, when they invested Kalafat, which the Turks had seized.Towards the end of March the war began ott a grand scale by the Rasmians crossing the Danube and uccupying the Turkish province of the Dubrodjs, around Trajan's wall.Part of the army besieged Silistris, but it waa compelled to retreat in June, after heavy fght- ing, Mome months later the Russians with: drew from tho Danube, concentrating their foross in the Crimes, where the war was oven: tually decided.Taking warning from these blunders it is very likely that Rossia will puab on operations with tremendous energy, and pos- #ibly the Turk may receive severe punishment at first.jeter, as he dees not take part Lut Mr.Cauchon did not seem to think that election expenditure could be more than shifted from one point to another. It had been remov- el from the constituencies into the courts, aad if checked in the courta would break out somewhere else. The Guvernuent apparently decided to do without the CANANIAN WIMBLENON TZAM this year ; but although opinions are divided, so wary are in fuvor of it that the vote {or the service will again be taken.although for a smaller amount than last ypar. The Premier himself is decidedly in favor of the money being diviled amongst local rite associations, and i pH prising that one of his sympathetio not have a strouger attachinent for an appropris- tion appealing so strongly to sentiment and feeling as that for a Cauadian rifle team at the great rifle match of the British Empire, — in fact, of the world.OTTAWA, April 20.The Pacific Railway explanations were NOT #0 INTEUERTING this year as they were Lust, perbape, hecause there is now less to explain, a great part of the line being decided on and the :articulars in regard to that nut yet lucated being Less interesting because now Letier koown, There having Leen some information given already this session, Le- sides a report of the engineer, saved some statements which would otherwise have been made.Nothing farther has Leen determined upon is connection with the Georgian Bay branch, The engineers «nly came with the remulta of the complete survey since the opening of Parliament, and the reports of their labors are oot ready, mo that there may not be any more definite information ia to that part of the line this session than there is now.The exact terminus on the French river and some crossings have not yet been located, lat there in no inimediate necessity for the line, which was gone about in too much of a hurry at het, to the discomtiture of those responsible for the policy. The Premier's speech was a purely business one, although he threw out a hint that his reply to Dr.Tupper might be somewhat dif ferent, only, itis to be supposed, io case vf provocation. In British Columbia the state of matters is that the Bute and Dean Inlet routes have been completely surveyed, ani that the Fraser Valley route will be this summer before the line is finally located. The extreme ne routes are the shortest and as easy aa, if not the easiest, of any; but thelanow is ve deep.some times avetasing twenty-seven feet, though whether this applies to Dean lulet or nut does not seem very clear. The GRADES ARE EASIRE an the Fraser Valley route, the line is shorter and the hartor is better than by Bute Inlet ; but the route although shorter, would be more expensive and for the last one hundred miles the line would run parallel totand not very far from the United States frontier, ‘The harbor of Bute Inlet is very bad, Lut still it is probable that that routs will le finally selected notwith- standips this difficulty, a uit serious ome.The British naval officers were applied to for opinions in reference to the harbors on the mainland const, and they were unfavorable to Bute Tulet for several reasons. It seems probable, frm some remarks of De.Tupper, that the opposition attack on the British Columbia end of the line will be, «mn its being located before there is à line surveyed through the Peace River country, as if it were found convenient to take the road that way, thers seems to be but little doubt that it would, for at least twn hundred and fifty miles, ran through a very FERTILE COUNTRY instead of by the more southern route already Incated to Fort George, which ie practical desert.Any decisi the I'eace River fine bef wre Incati throngh British Columbia woul of tw yearn, y 4, although this has been sonre exchange of views, amd the Pre.le Peace River route was not adopted mier and the Grand Trunk authorities under.afterwards.Jobn Macdonald was much stand each other pretty thorouchly.Jt may be, more mulerate in his remarks alwut the Peace than Dr, Tupper, only asking for of & survey, not so much for railway pre apparently as for general information, but if Lor, ‘8 upper is determined to take a strong stand on this point he will ao daubt have wuth- cient weight to make it the of the Oppo tion, The l’remive did not give any indication that he would assent to this farther delay for exploration, although it would, na doubt, be deasin.to many of his followers, whe would nat © SOITY bo see the MAILWAY POsTTONED for a long time to come, Uf the road west of Thunder Bay.wiles is now under contract for & 60,0, an average of 824,021 per mile, about one half of the average cont of the Intercolonial. With the exception of the brid- cen, the road bed will be as givnl as that of the ntercolunial, but it is not stated that the country as dithcult a that through which {| Intercolonia! Railway passes. In regard further contracts “it appears that the isementa in British papers and the profits of as much cf the line aacould be nbtained which were sent to London have not led tn much result ao far, Some few contractors have heen paving » little attention to the matter, but new railway ventures in America are KOT FAVORABLY REGARDED in Diritain at present, The plan for the future in to ft all the information ready and bave it well brought to notice in Britain in time for tenders to be sent in before next session of Parliament.Dir, Tupper wanted the question of route of the Fraser Valley with the linc near the American frontier, if that was [avored hy the Government, to be left sa open questionfuntil next session ; but the Premier would aot give any promise.latter, al though fully alive to all the advantages to be .ed from a vigorous prosecution of the Pacific fail.way comstruction, exp » very decided opinion in reference to RUNNING WILDLY INTO DEDT for the sake of it, and he evidently considered himself fully bound by the principles often sffirmed in connection with this work from its very inception the last time, only lsat semsiom, that there should Le no increase of tazation because of the expenditure onit.Mr.Roscoe, who has been supporting the Goverument, can hardly be expected to do wo in future from the tone of his remarka last night, which were very bitter against their policy, chiefly it seemed because of the delay for anotbee summer in te have the Fraser Valley surveyed, Mr.Delos mos had cheered Dr, Tupper's remarks in refee- ence to the Peace liver country, at which the Premier expressed his pleasire, as it indicated a willingness to wait another year for anrveys. The member for Victoria, however, repudiated this construction of hin cheers, and in hisapsech managed to tranagrems the proper freedom of debate by insinuating that the l’remier Nan INFLURNCED the Imperial Secretary of State in some mysten ons way a Ra to necure bis approval of hie course.Bnch a strain from him, however, Is ot to be wondered at.His remarks were principally addremed to showing the mivantage of the Bute Inlet ronte and the impracticability of the Fraser Valley route.Once he waxed itd Bri other emphatic about” the great wealth of Ca umbia, more than that ) vos province, and wa d wi on.amused ironical cheers, fi.diel wot make all of his speck, reserving part of it for the fight over Dr, expect: of any per's nen-confidence motion, which ie to-morrow, and will no doubt be forthcoming if Dr, Tupper is well enough, for there may be some doubt about that, His reaclution fa very general, so THAT ANY OXB OPPOSED to the Government Pacific Rail i vote for it whether they are ia fave pd ore vigor or of more caution, Thi will wot binder « different tent from being applied, aa nome clever Miniterialists ma come and with amendment em ng the Government policy, which the could sot well vole pe wm Me, Rom.of Middlesex, did lent year.
