The Montreal Witness: Weekly Review and Family Newspaper voit le jour le 5 janvier 1846 à la suite d'un numéro prospectus paru le 15 décembre 1845. Le Witness, comme on se plaît à le nommer, est l'oeuvre du propriétaire, éditeur et fondateur John Dougall, né en 1808. Écossais d'origine, il émigre au Canada en 1826 et se marie en 1840 avec Élizabeth, fille aînée de la célèbre famille Redpath. Ce mariage lui permet sans doute de s'associer financièrement à cette famille et de tisser des liens avec la haute bourgeoisie anglophone de Montréal.

Le parcours littéraire et journalistique de John Dougall est étroitement lié aux mouvements évangéliques puisqu'il a été membre fondateur de la French Canadian Missionary Society, « organisme opposé aux catholiques et voué à évangéliser et convertir les Canadiens français au protestantisme » (DbC).

La fougue religieuse de l'éditeur a provoqué une réplique de la communauté anglophone catholique. C'est ce qui explique la naissance du journal True Witness and Catholic Chronicle en 1850. Le Witness suscite tellement de réactions que Mgr Ignace Bourget en interdira la lecture aux catholiques en 1875.

The Montreal Witness est demeuré tout au long de son existence une entreprise familiale. John Dougall, propriétaire et éditeur depuis 1845, cède l'entreprise à son fils aîné John Redpath Dougall en 1870 qui, à son tour, passe le flambeau à Frederick E. Dougall en 1934. Ce dernier sera propriétaire et éditeur jusqu'à la disparition du journal en 1938.

The Montreal Witness a connu différentes éditions (hebdomadaire, bihebdomadaire, trihebdomadaire) et plusieurs noms. Outre son appellation initiale, il paraît sous Montreal Weekly Witness: Commercial Review and Family Newspaper, Montreal Weekly Witness, Montreal Weekly Witness and Canadian Homestead, Montreal Witness and Canadian Homestead, Witness and Canadian Homestead ainsi que Witness.

En 1938, à la veille de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, les conditions économiques sont désastreuses et le nombre des abonnements diminue constamment. Malgré de vibrants appels aux lecteurs pour soutenir le journal, celui-ci doit cesser de paraître par manque de financement. Le dernier numéro, paru en mai 1938, comporte de nombreuses lettres d'appui et de remerciements. Ainsi se termine une aventure journalistique qui aura duré 93 années.
