INFORMATION, How to Produce Perfect Combustion with Wood Shavings, Sawdust, Ete., When Firing a Furnace—A New Non-Explo- sive Flash Light.Stokers with shavings are geperally a nuisance to the whole neighborheod, poisoning the atmosphere all around, making the place dirty, unhealthy and disagreca- ble. This is caused by supplying se fire with fresh shavings on top of the burned ones and smoldering it, generating a large amount of smoke but, no heat. The fire and ‘heat are only produced when all the shavings ara.charred.In order to produce perfect combustion with wood shavings, sawdust, ete,, it is necessary to Burn them from the top, and here is given the details of how a correspondent of Pèwer-Steam did it with satisfactory results, \\ Bowen FIG.1L.—FIRING WITH SHAVINGS.Provide a half inch gas pipe long enough to reach to the end of the furnace.Light your shaving fire, and when pearly burned take your half inch pipe and divide the burning shavings through the middle, barking them against the side walls .as shown in Fig.1.Now feed ‘a pile of new shavings into the center on to the clean grate bars and close your furnace doors. The shavings will begin to burn from abeve, lighted from the two side fires, the air will pass through the bars into the shavings, where it will be heated and unite with the gas, making the combustion perfect, generating heat and no smoke and the fire’ will last much longer and require not half the labor in stoking. If shavings are Jeft over, the planer shavings could be compressed and sold for packing many goods.Any one making this trial will be convinced of efficiency."BOER A of cet en FIG.2 —FIRING WITH SHAVINGS.{ The correspondent quoted claims by this plai a gréat saving in fuel with plenty of wer and no complaints from the neigh- ors, as there was no more smoke apparent at the chimney.Ce “ A New Flash Light.© At a regular meeting of the Washington Chemical society, April 11, Dr.Thomas Taylor, of the United States department of agriculture exhibited a new flash light intended to take the place of several kinds which have of late proved highly dangerous in practice.Science tells that Dr.Taylor's new flash light consists largely of chareoal made from the silky down of the milk weed—a form of carbon which he prefers to all others, because of its freedom from ash.A few grains of this new composition placed on tissue paper and lighted by a punk match produced a prompt and linding flash, while it was observed that the paper on which the powder rested was not even scorched. The flash being instantaneous, the heat is not sufficient to ignite the most inflammable material on which the powder may rest.Dr.Taylor demonstrated this by using, with the same paper for a base, an inferior flash light, which set fire to the paper at once. This is owingto the comparatively slow combustion of the chemicals used in the inferior grade.Dr.Taylor said that the powder of his new flash light will not explode either by concussion or friction. To Prevent Metals from Rusting.Melt together a pound of lard and a lump of rosin, the size of an English walnut, using only beat enough to melt the rosin, which will take place soon if it is broken fine.By wrapping the rosin in a piece of stout brown paper and striking it gently with a hammer, smooth stone or other hard substance, the rosin may be readily broken, and by carefully opening the paper, may be added to thelard with ease. When the rosin is completely melted stir the mixture well and set aside to cool, and, as it begins to harden, stir occasionally. When cool keep it covered to exclude the dust.Any article of steel, even delicate machinery, covered with this—moving the article slightly to cause the composition to enter all crevices—no matter How thin the coating, will be completely protected, and, according to The Horological Review, the mixture will prove itself a complete anti- rust.Scientific Brevities. The next half century will undoubtedly witness a remarkable increase in the exten- gion of the railroad systems of the world. An extraordinary invention is claimed to have been made by a Russian officer, in a luminous projectile to Le fired from a gun, which will be extremely useful for discovering the movements of an enemy in a naval contest at night.A good preventive for the inroads of ants is a strip of carbolated petrolatum, about half an inch in width, drawn about the places frequented.Prof.C.I.Brackett, in a recent address, expressed some very pregnant ideas in very simple language. He said: “Sound is not alr; it is air in motion.Electricity is not matter; it ismatter doing something, And we are all trying to find out just what it is doing.” An electric fire engine is reported asa recent invention. It is claimed that this engine can be started at full speed whenever wanted, is noiseless, makes no smoke nor ashes, is lighter than a steam engine of equal power, costs one-third less, is safer and more economical x American Analyst tells that an English photographer claims to have obtained a photograph in which the natural colors weg reproduced when the POSITION.We bad intended in our issue of yes- “erday to have explained at a little more length than we did the reason for Tur Hzrain’s temporarily reduced size.An accident to the forms while on the press frustrated this intention. We will now therefore content ourselves with saying that Tux HERALD management believed itself to have been imposed upon in a manzer to which other journals had declined to submit. On objecting to this the pistol was practically put to Tux HERALD’s bead at the hour for beginning .work, and the management was told to concede or the men would strike.Having made one or two concessions, and finding that they merely led to further demands, the management of Tee Hrr- ALD declined to submit to this system of dictation, and the compositors therefore declined to resume work, and have set themselves to try and prevent others accepting employment from Tre HERALD.In the public interest as well as in our own we think it about time to meet this matter squarely.= THE CARE OF THE INSANE.It may be taken for granted that tha fire at Longue Pointe Asylum will result in improvements being made in the housing of lunatics wheraver a new asylum is built, caring, or rather not caring, for the afllicted, it is made the interest of contractors to keep pat ents as Jong as possible, to discourage curative efforts, and to be blind to the recovery of an insane person. It places the coatrec- tors in the position of being losers by the discharge of a patient, and there‘ore gainers by retaining all once confi led to them whether sane or insane, It makes it to the interest of the contractors fo provide only the absolute necessaries of life to the unfortunate people, and to do this in the cheapest possible way.So long as the contractors can keep a patient and keep him alive their pecuniary interest is in avoiding those expenditures which increase his comfort, and those measures which may restore him to health.—— Tux reports that have been circulaied concerning the Provincial Government’s intention of appointing some gentleman to the Protestant Board of School Commissioners, in place of the Rev.Dr.McVicar, are entirely without foundation.Mr.Mercier has never been spoken to on the subject, no one has proposed it, and the matter bas not and will not even come under consideration until the regular time for decision srrives. We see in the Star that Lady Smith and Lady Stephen are, inadvertently of course, credited with the intention of ; bolding public receptions at their respective houges during the visit of the Duke of Connaught. It is hardly necessary to gay that this is a mistake as, in both casee, the receptions are wholly confined to personal friends.re The Ontario press is much concerned about the coming elections in that province, but Conservative journals are at variance with the Liberals on several important matters of fact, so that it is difficult at present to say just how large Mr.Mowat’s majority will be.Returns compiled by the Ontario mining com mission show that during the past twenty years the valne of the mineral products exported from Ontario was $17,672,224.and of this no less but no maiter how the problem is decided it is beyond dispute that the Canadian Pacific Railway caters to all so far as gastronomic luxurygis concerned.Added to the luxurious elegance of Sleeping and Housewife two remedies for one who is suflering from neuralgia in the head.Put him ina warm bed.Make a brick very hot and cover it with several thicknesses of flannel.Fold a coarse, thick cloth and place it on the pillow.Lay the brick on this and wey thoroughly with rum.Rest the mc.painful part of the head of gpa Gh The brick and throw a blanket over the patient, covering the head.Keep covered in this way until the pain ceases. When the blanket is removed, wipe the moisture from the head, face and neck, and then bathe in alcohol or rum, to prevent the taking of a cold.Another remedy is to make salt very hot by stirring it over the fire in a frying pan; then pour it into a bag, which should be securely tied.Have the patient lie down and cover him well.Place the bag of hot salt on that part of the head or face where the pain is located. The salt will retain the heat a long time. This method is much easier than the first, but it will not relieve one $0 quickly nor so thoroughly.A Chiropodist on Corns and Bunions. An English chiropodist advances the startling opinion that corns are hereditary. He doesn’t think that there is as much difference between the size of the American and the English woman’s foot as has been claimed, “but the Americans, you know, have their boots built to fit them much better.” He takes out corns ‘for all sorts of people, from girls of fifteen to young swells and elderly people.Of course glder- ly people form the majority. But thereare four women to each man.” It seems that among the worst disfigurements of the feet are the ingrowing nails, which come from wearing shoes with pointed toes.Bunions, too, arise from the same cause, and these are mostly more costly to get rid of than corns. The Cremation Idea. When a man is bitten by the idea of cremation he becomes very strenuous in letting everybody know.Cremation seems to make people as enthusiastic as a new’ feligion.A jeweler recently made for a customer a cinerary urn which the customer was going to use as an ornament to his sideboard till it was required for graver purposes. The urn is made of the finest crystal glass, mounted in carved and roblded silver. There are two shields on the silver cover, which is surmounted with a heraldic helmet.Theurn itself will hold about as much ashes as will go into an ordinary sized round felt hat, that being the approximate quantity yielded by a cremated man.One Thing and Another. The sunpiest among the rooms should be selected for habitual habitation, especially of children, Direct sunlight should not be excluded to a greater extent than necessary for the safety of the eyes. The continued use of antipyretics is pronounced by an eminent foreign authority to have an injurious effect, securing repose at the expense of vital force. To make white eyebrows a better color wet them frequently with strong black tea and let it dry on, says a writer on toilet matters.——0#——— Smoke Eand-Made Cigar, Nectar, 5 Cents SOCIAL ETIQUETTE.A Fashionable Man’s Comments on Trifles of Importance Among Socicty People.Mr.Ward McAllister, prominent among New York’s ‘four hundred,” notes in The ‘World some trifling social blunders which often give serious offense, because they are largely the result of thoughtlessness and frequently do not admit of satisfactory explanation: “It is no unusual thing, for example, to find a man or woman sending a note to an acquaintance or friend and addressing the envelope Mr.John Smith, instead of John Smith, Esq.“It would be difficult to tell, perhaps, why it is so, but Mr.John Smith is felt to be a mean and derogatory way of subscribing the envelope, and it is a fashion never used by careful people.John Smith, Esq., is the accepted formula, and unless the envelope is addressed to a tradesman or a man in a distinctively inferior walk of life it is the formula which must be used.It is not even permissible to use Mr.Smith when the first name of the gentleman for whom the letter is intended is unknown. The proper formula in such a case is this: — Smith, Esq.“I state the practice in this matter as I would in any other matter, and do not pretend to explain or justify it.“It is no unusual thing for writers to address correspondents as Dear Madam or Dear Sir even when their feelings are of the kindliest. This is not allowable under any circumstances, If you have any acquaintance with Mr.Smith at all you are bound to address him as My Dear Mr, Smith or simply Dear Mr.Smith.If you are really intimate with him, Dear Smith or My Dear Smith is permissible.“The only case where the beginning of a note with Sir or Dear Sir is not indicative of a fecling of superiority on the part of the writer, and his desire to keep the correspondent at a social distance, is where the note is hostile in its character.“I need scarcely say,” continued Mr, Mc- Allister, “that when a person is writing to somebody whom he does not know at all end has not known the only way to get around the difficulty continually presented in such cases is to put the letter in the third person and present the compliments of the writer to the correspondent and inclose the personal card. This also is a favorite mode for men and women to address people with whom they have business ggjations and no social relations whatever, *Yours Truly is the most formal and perfunctory way of introducing the signature.Yours Sincerely is coming into use in England to a certain extent, and of course will be taken up here, Faithfully Yours is also a formula which is securing some English indorsement, and that in the long run means an American indorsement. The old form of Your Qbedient Servant, ete, has gone out altogether.Yours Respectfully is only used when addressing a man in an official position on a matter of first importance.um >< Smoke Hand-Made Cigar, Nectar, 5
